When guitar players think of blues chord progressions inevitably they often default to thinking about the typical 12-bar blues progression, however, there are a ton of other blues progressions that don’t get talked about as much. Today I want to share with you one of those progressions in this “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” guitar lesson.
“Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” follows an 8-bar blues chord progression and has quite a different chord progression than just the typical I, IV, and V chord blues.
In this lesson, I’ll break down the chords, and different ways of strumming, fingerpicking, and even soloing over this blues classic. So get tuned up and let’s go!
Who Wrote Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out?
"Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" has become a blues standard over the years but it was originally written by pianist Jimmie Cox in 1923. It was first performed in a Vaudeville-blues style. The song's lyrics tell of a wealthy person who lost their money and the friends that came with it. The first recording of this song was done by Bessie Smith in 1929.
Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out Chords
As mentioned above “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” does not follow a typical 12-bar blues progression. Instead, it is an 8-bar blues chord progression and to play it you’ll need to know 8 chords. Those 8 chords are C, E7, A7, Dm, F, F#dim, D7/F#, and G7.

Hi Jon, this is one great lesson. You show all the nuances that really make it sound like the original by Clapton. Man, I've got most of it pretty good, and even put in a little of my own flavor in it. Its a cool tune, bcuz you can slow it down some and it still sounds good too. Thanks for the super effort on your part.
Finally someone who explains it well. Thank you.
Thank you!
Beautiful sounding and you make it look so easy! I hope some day to get to that level. For now I'm content to use a pick, slowly work up to adding the harder stuff and then take on the finger picking method. Love your tutorials, Jon.
Certainly a great lesson. Over My head for now but I will be back to learn this.
Jon , awesome , thanks so much for the best down and out lesson on you tube . Rock on brother. You make it look easy....

Great lesson, thanks.
Nicely laid out and straight to the point. New subscriber. And thank you. Love the comment about the A7 and Dm, “If it’s good enough for Clapton it’s good enough for me.”
Thanks and welcome aboard. Those two chord shapes have a signature Clapton style guitar sound. Keep up the great work!

@@jonmaclennan Will do :D thanks
Hi John,
What's the guitar you're playing? Very nice.
thanks!
Hi Jon, the breakdown of the chord progressions is really good. However, i think your explanation and breakdown of the picking fingers can be better explained. Other videos/lessons you post, you explain it all in great detail but I think more detailed explanation of what your picking hand is needed in this lesson.
Love this lesson, nicely broken down and explained. Looking forward to digging into more, maybe Layla next :)
Awesome glad to help: ua-cam.com/video/BGTjO4tRKAU/v-deo.html
Clapton got that low E hammer on G string from Scrapper Johnson's version of this song.
Great lesson . Thank you so much very easy to follow. Subscribed.
Don't understand the thumbs down. Why . If they can put up a better lesson . Why be nasty ???
I love Bessie Smith's
Listen to Duane Allman's great solo on Gregg doing this tune from the 60's.
Jon, could you give a step by step lesson for this song? Like the strings to pluck with each chord, I’m really struggling here, if would be be good if you could give ya buddy a helping hand here :) Thanks!
I find it easier to play the F, then Adim7 (or a D7), C and A7 again. Much simpler and smoother IMO.
thanks
Thank you!
A D7 is a Clapton blues chord? Anyway. Nicely played. Thank you.
You're welcome and yup that D7/F# is totally one of Clapton's go to chord shapes. He loves that one, I think he got it from listening to Robert Johnson, he would do that all the time.
Hey what's in the pill bottle on the keyboard?
Nice lesson
It's fast fret: rb.gy/pi6f0z
Hi Jon, is that a Maton you’re playing there?
Yes sir! It's an EBG808 Artist. Here is a video about it: ua-cam.com/video/x3FPKAIKaH0/v-deo.html
@@jonmaclennan nice to se them outside Australia. I have an EM325, they don’t make them anymore but I love the tone and playability. Enjoying your content. Cheers!
can you add the end send of chords please that he finishes the song on please?
He goes from the D7/f# at the end to an F for 2 bars then back to D7/f# and two hits on G7 “when your down and out” then plays a blues lick to a B9 C9 ✌️🎸
Great tutorial. For the record, this song was written in 1923 by Jimmy Cox and popularized by Bessie Smith in her 1929 recording through the 30's. SHE wrote all of those voicings and licks, but EC as awesome as he is, doesn't give credit to the writer, an American Black Woman.
Hi Where is the backing track you mentioned?

Isn't your A7 not a A6??

@@jonmaclennan A7 :X02020 (?)
@@treblekinggretsch They are both A7 chords
I really like this tutorial, but wow that picking. Too much time is devoted to chord progression and not enough on strumming/picking style. It's just brushed over at the end. I still like the rest of the video and all, but I do feel like I'm teaching myself the picking at the end. Otherwise keep up the good work Jon.
Thanks for watching. You can actually get a detailed TAB of the picking here: www.jonmaclennan.com/freebook
Geez dude, great video but cut down those ads man.
Your guitar is that a Maton.
