  • Hey Guys! We’re back! Sorry we went MIA again. Tons of new things going on. We can do a life update video soon to catch you guys up and keep you in the loop of what we’ve been up to. Mainly my video editor, aka my wife, aka Andrea, lol, living back home with her parents for 6 weeks but now back and ready to get on our weekly posting schedule. Head on to Instagram where we are the most active to stay up to date and where we share more info and tips 🙂

    In today’s video I show you 2 of my all time favorite wheelchair hacks. This is for when there’s either no elevator or ramp at all, or longer, harder to access.. or simply like me sometimes who wants to be somewhere quicker and faster and not wait. Not going to lie, the stairs hack comes in handy when places like The Mall of America gets packed and takes forever to get the elevator. Out of both of these hacks I end up using the curb cut one the most! This is especially useful when we travel! Definitely a good skill to practice if you’re able because it does come in handy.

    I feel like I have to say this disclaimer for this video: In no shape or form am I suggesting for you to do these things. I’m just sharing with you 2 things I do often at least on a weekly basis that have helped me reach some more independence and discover new abilities. Try at your own risk and PLEASE SAFETY FIRST! I’m showing you things that I’ve been doing since I was in middle school and already sitting in a wheelchair. It has taken me some time to be able to do both of these skills with all the strength and confidence you see me doing them in this video. I am an advocate for everyone to trying new things that will help them gain more independence and discover new abilities. But again, safety first.
    .
    Have any of you wheelchair users tried any of these before? Or any other hacks out there I should look into? :P

    We’re Kasey & Andrea. A Minnesotan and Salvadorian husband and wife living and loving life in Minnesota, USA. We live an adaptive lifestyle that allows us to be active, independent, and live life to the fullest. We’ve been together a total of 8 years and going into our 4th year of marriage. Through all of these years together (and with Kasey’s 28 years of living with Spina Bifida) we have learned A LOT about adaptive equipment and products, and multiple ways on how to modify things around our homes and lives. We have traveled to different parts of North and Latin America so far and planning to adventure a lot more in the near future. We created this blog to share with others our personal experience with living an active and independent adapted life. We’ll be sharing adaptive product and equipment reviews of what we have used in the past; posts of some of the most fun places we’ve been able to visit during our travels. Last but not least, we’ll also share content regarding Kasey’s weight loss journey and adaptive fitness and exercise ideas. We’re extremely excited to be able to reach out AND also learn from others who are living an adaptive life to the fullest! Here’s to some amazing Adapted Adventures!

    WOAH. Never really dreamed of going up or down an escalator. Ive only ever gone down stairs and off curbs. This was really helpful, thanks for making this video. I loved the looks on peoples faces when they saw you use the escalator. XD

    Would using the escalator work for your chair if you have anti tippers?

    • @AdaptedAdventures
      @AdaptedAdventures  5 років тому +1

      Greg, hey thanks for the question! It probably won't because I think they will hit the escalator stair as you go up, but i do know that a lot of anti tip bars flip up so if this is a skill you wanted to try but aren't quite ready to get rid of your anti tippers yet you could try that. Either way when I first learned how to do this I did it with someone spotting me from behind. Keep an eye out for a video coming in the future where Im gonna talk about about how I learned to eventually graduate from having tip bars on my chair! Have a great weekend!

      @@AdaptedAdventures thanks may have to try it at MOA one of these days. We always just used the freight elevators by the doors that people don't normally use. But sometimes it would be nice to just hit up the escalators without having to make a detour to the elevators. I havent graduated from my tippers and been in my chair for like 16 years now lol. Howd you get over that fear of tipping back for it's happened to me a few times. But I guess when I am ready for escalators I can always tip them up. Have a great weekend as well.

      @@gregher4621 this is gonna sound kinda weird but for me its just getting comfortable WITH falling over... i've been in a chair all my life and i still tip over backwards occasionally but its has become instinct for me to catch myself with my hand and/or pull my head up and tuck my chin so i land on my shoulders not my head... that and just being super confident with handling my wheelchair

    Discovered your incredible channel. So good since my 11 year old grandson has SB so it's like a warning perhaps seeing ahead positively. Can I ask please I got polio as a child and use leg braces zHsv e you Casey ever tried them ?

    • @AdaptedAdventures
      @AdaptedAdventures  3 роки тому

      I had a walking brace when I was younger like grade school, but at a certain point the size of the brace needed to support my body, came to a point that it wasn't worth it anymore

    Do you have any tips for getting off the escalator when going up? I find going down fine but when I tried to go up an escalator the front wheels of my chair got stuck on the lip at the top. Do you find that you have to lean back or do a wheelie or anything to get off?

    • @AdaptedAdventures
      @AdaptedAdventures  5 років тому +1

      @paralife thank you for the question! I've actually dealt with this before too! For me its kind of a two step process, first I don't let go completely of the hand rail I usually keep my right hand on the moving hand rail and then I put my left hand on my left wheel, and I don't do a full on wheelie and my front wheels may not even come off the ground all that much but I kinda like push just enough and lean back so that my front wheels float over that lip and I hand out the hand rail so that keeps me moving forward! Hope that kinda helps :/ .... let me know if you have other questions!

      Thanks for the tips, I will give that a go next time I see an escalator 🙂 Hopefully won't make a fool of myself by getting stuck again 😂
