Could? absolutely. Would he though, that's hard to say! I mean, he barely found a mainstream audience in the nineties. But if he started when he did, never killed himself, I'd guess he'd be making relevant music and his following would be even bigger. Maybe his best was yet to come, which is a tragic thought. If hypothetically he started in modern day, maybe he'd adapt with the times and his music would be different, but his style, as it is, I don't think would make it with a major record label in 2020. Just because music gets more success now if it appeals to mass audiences. The musician's musicians still exist, but you have to dig around more for it, Elliott would likely fall into that category. Also, his image was tolerated and seen as cool in the nineties, I think it would be less accessible now, 20 years later. His musical ability though is incredible, unmatched IMO, and so maybe he'd find a different avenue to success based on that alone. So many variables it's a tough question. I know he'd still be one of the greatest musical talents on the planet, in any case!
Why is everybody knocking Brad Mehldau?? He is a god of jazz piano who appreciated Elliot Smith's genius as well. It is a live performance from two very different artists, and they are both making a point. and as far as I see elliott as a god,the only thing I criticize about Brad Mehldau here is that he had to leave the show early to catch a plane, and wanted to see more of two of the greatest minds working together. It is different from the XO version, but still a great clip, thanks for posting
The instrumental mehldau version with chria while on the mandolin is killer, And yeah, mehldau is a god damn legend, Ultimate respect to Elliott by being there just giving accompaniment this conservatively
Didn’t notice the knocking thankfully. Yeah Mehldau is a GOD, and his playing/harmony was massively influenced by ES’s music. A match made in heaven imo and Thee best version of the song I’ve ever heard. Keep coming back to this video for more
When he was on it, he was on it ... but come on, there’s many exceptions. Guy was the embodiment of soul but sometimes he had off nights, to say the least...

he was over-charged from the pure energy of Elliott.... Maybe tryin to take the credit for the song( in his mind?) Nobody Holds a candle to Elliott when it comes down to it!!!
He was knee deep in heroin and other addictions at the time and deeply unwell :( Jon Brion mentioned on the 'Heaven Adores You' documentary how it took multiple takes to get most of the songs because Elliott was taking so many drugs, he just keep messing up the songs. Sad.
I’m sure they say in the heaven adores you documentary that he was under the influence of some drug here and it was “the beginning of the end” or something along those lines

Yeah, if the Claypool Lennon Delerium can exist, Elliott Smith could.
He does. UA-cam recommends me Elliott cover song videos from across the world whenever I hop on.
I’m still not over losing him.
He'll exist as long as there are people who value beautiful, beautiful music.
Play this at my funeral.
what the heck
guess we found the key to eternal life... or the hack... hahahahaha
Hope you don't mind me stealing this idea. Just perfect.
Me too, play it loudly when lowering me in the ground
i love u xoxo

Where do you see "everybody knocking Brad Mehldau"?
The instrumental mehldau version with chria while on the mandolin is killer,
And yeah, mehldau is a god damn legend,
Ultimate respect to Elliott by being there just giving accompaniment this conservatively
Didn’t notice the knocking thankfully. Yeah Mehldau is a GOD, and his playing/harmony was massively influenced by ES’s music. A match made in heaven imo and Thee best version of the song I’ve ever heard. Keep coming back to this video for more
every time I hear this version- my heart weeps a thousand times
yes, it's absolutely beautiful!
I haven't watched this in a while. SO weird seeing Elliott without an instrument.
it’s so weird seeing him without a guitar, not in a bad way though. i love this performance sm
Elliott sings really well live when he's not also trying to nail virtuosic instrumentation simultaneously.
@@NoName-cz3wn He sings really well when he is nailing virtuosic instrumentation simultaneously as well.
A freakishly good live performance
One of the best songwriters, lyricists theres ever been. His work only gets better as time goes on
This is one of the best things I've heard, I always come back to listen, again and again.
This is an angel singing to you.
out fucking standing
this is Heaven
This is so beautiful.
he is so angelic i love elliott
I miss him
I love these people forever.
I never heard about this guy until today. I was looking up covers of Martina McBrides song Independence Day and found this
Never too late!!!
James Lee. Wonderful isn’t he?
@bakshay hey, nice deep cut! Vic is great.
I'm fortunate that I have a local radio station, that lets their DJ's play what they want and one of them plays him.
You were looking for copper, and you found gold!
You only live a day, but it's brilliant anyway
It's written all over his face...
So beautiful…
brilliant..
Damn i used to love this song when i was younger AND somehow i forgo It fook It's been a while 😅😅
Beautiful
wonderful wonderful! thank you!
His performance is great, I didn't realise people were knocking the guy until I came here. Idiots.
Happy 4th.
Amazing song
does anyone recognize the microphone being used for Elliot's voice
Might be a C12, it's the right shape, but it's all gaffed up so its hard to tell.
Totally yesss!!!
He looked pleased with his musicians at the end
Brad is out standing as well' thou
Absolutely.
I'll meet you here tomorrow in Dependence Day
RIP Elliott
His live performances are always better than studio versions. No exceptions.
why compare?
@@tillschulz7522 Not a compare actually, just my humble opinion.
When he was on it, he was on it ... but come on, there’s many exceptions. Guy was the embodiment of soul but sometimes he had off nights, to say the least...
He would have completely disagreed.
Go watch sunset junction....
A future butterfly, gonna spend the day
Higher than high
You'll be a beautiful confusion, ooh
Once I was you
Ah, ah
I saw you caught between all the people out
Making a scene
In a bright, ideal tomorrow, ooh
Don't go too far, stay who you are
Ah, ah
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
You only live a day
But it's brilliant anyway
I saw you out
A perfect place
It's gonna happen soon
But not today
So go to sleep
Amid the change
I'll meet you here tomorrow
Independence day
Independence day
Independence day
Get the lyrics right if you're going to post them.
Great
Oh man
WOW
❤️
AH 😭
mehldau is great.
The thumbnail looks like Paul Merson having a bad day at the betting shop!
right! isnt E.S great, i do like the recorded version, though
he was over-charged from the pure energy of Elliott.... Maybe tryin to take the credit for the song( in his mind?) Nobody Holds a candle to Elliott when it comes down to it!!!
I don't know, I LOL'd pretty hard at your comment.
this great song resists even this version
elliott looks so depressed /:
He was knee deep in heroin and other addictions at the time and deeply unwell :( Jon Brion mentioned on the 'Heaven Adores You' documentary how it took multiple takes to get most of the songs because Elliott was taking so many drugs, he just keep messing up the songs. Sad.
sorrowful
He does not look happy about all this nonsense.
He looks so depressed here :(
Right? I thought so too. Maybe he misses his guitar :p
@@JunkBondTrader Well, he was depressed a lot, so. But yeah, in hind sight I just like to thank he misses his guitar!
I’m sure they say in the heaven adores you documentary that he was under the influence of some drug here and it was “the beginning of the end” or something along those lines
@@SM-tj6qp no. Not even close to the first. But he was definitely high here.
High & Wounded like an awful lot of people these days
jus no pleasin some peopel
He's just too high. That's not an Elliott I recognize or remember.
What?
"Gonna spend the day higher than high..." 💔
This is beautiful.
