My older Thompson's had a really nice cowhide. My daughter recently received one, it is leather but feels like cheap bonded leather.

Agreed. The newer ones just don't have that same leathery feel.

If they bought them from CBD they are printed in China with cheap leather. Now kirkbride have been bought by Zondervan and perhaps there will he uniform high quality.

@@deaconjohn7875 my daughter's bible came from Kirkbride ( gift from local Sunday school).
So far the bibles purchased from CBP we have been pleased with.
      They are :
WM Turquoise with an ironed calfskin cover.
      Thompson's In the portfolio case.

@@samvogel2368 they say "kirkbride"but CBD's TCR are from China. The text block seemed the same and the box was the same.. .it was just an inferior cover. Kirkbride contracted with a Chinese company and CBD and were selling much cheaper. I bought one and called kirkbride about it. It had genuine leather that seemed like bonded leather. I ended up giving it away. I am glad to hear that CBD have other quality bibles because their prices are very good.

@@deaconjohn7875 I believe that. My CBP paper isn't as tough though easy to write on. The THC my wife bought me when I first started preaching. As previously stated, this edition has an awesome quality cowhide cover and the paper is tough and durable. The chain reference system is irreplaceable for any Christian and often still use it for study/sermon prep. The reasons I moved away from it as my mine bible were these:
No room for notes/paper is too thin for notes.
The font on my current bible is much larger, thus easier to preach from.
Appreciate the conversation, very informative. Torn between a Schuyler WM or Allan Brevier WM for next purchase.

My cover is bonded leather and I’ve had it for 3 or so years. But with daily use, I can see it’s starting to wear and there’s a scuff where my thumb lays when I hold it. I wish I could just get it rebound, but I don’t wanna sent it out through the mail.

I have a 1983 edition NIV Thompson which I understand is quite rare. It's a Zondervan publication with Genuine Leather that is quite nice. I would say, based upon the criteria mentioned in your video, it is probably better quality than any of the later versions shown. It has held up amazingly well over the years, but unfortunately is a bit hard to read these days due to the smaller print size.

the best TCR bible is the 4th edition printed in the 1964, I have 2 of them and wouldn't swap for a new one,

@@AFrischPerspective it is a shame it isn't as the TCR bible is my main bible and a lot of people are missing out on it, due to the quality of the text and ghosting.

The new TCR are outsourced to China, whereas the older ones were made in the U.S. I think the quality in paper is also poorer now. I have a 3rd edition from the 30s and the stitching was fantastic (and still is). CBP and the kjv store are the only places I wouls buy one. I hope Kirkbride can start producing a better product and hopefully come out with a 6th edition. Thank you for the review!

Actually that is not true...Rumor is they did outsource for a short period around 20 years ago or so but brought them back.
Kirkbride bibles are printed and bound in the U.S .A
As for quality their new Genuine leather is stiffer but softens up with use . The paper has always been premium India bible paper but it has changed some over the years in opacity and feel.
Their NKJV and ESV are printed on a higher density paper which is slightly more white and reflective. Recently I purchased a Churchbiblepublisher.com KJV edition and was very happy to see Kirkbride is printing the Kjv darker plus thickened the paper. The ghosting compared to my 2015-16 edition is much better my wife was happy with it esp the red letter.
The problem with Kirkbride is advancement and consistency . I've seen excellent bibles and bad ones through the years esp with printing the red letter is just BAD ...but , like I said our newest edition is much better.
I recommend anyone who buys one to get a CBP Kjv bound edition if they like the KJV. If you like the ESV the Kirkbride produced genuine leather has the best printing and layout ive seen from kirkbride so far. The esv has line matching which eliminates the ghosting effect substantially.
I love Thompson Chain bibles they have been a long loved bible in my wife's family and our own . I pray they get better and are able to advance their products quality, I'd hate to see them disappear .😇

@@Airik1111bibles Yes - I've spoken to the folks at Kirkbride since I live in the Indianapolis area, and they gave me the scoop on their BIbles. Their Bibles are definitely printed and bound in the USA. If you buy from CBD, however, they are printed and bound in China.
I bought a couple from CBD and Kirkbride just to compare the two, and I honestly didn't find many differences. The stitching is a bit different (wider stitching in the Kirkbride), but other than that they are very much the same.
Also, the lady from Kirkbride told me the Leather standard KJV should be out before the end of this year. The new ESVs should be out the first of next year. The new 2020 NASBs will be at least a year (which I assume is because they are waiting on the updated translation).

Are the illustrations still like a comic book? Have they improved those? I loved my Thompson Chain in the 80’s, but the illustrations looked so cheap to me it prevented me from getting another one 😏.

Do a comparison between the three Bibles on the index for the scripture maps. I refer to the recent printings as abridged Thompson Chain Bibles. Something is missing.

I have a Kirkbride TCR, 4th Edition, from 1982. There is a world of difference in the quality of the 1982 edition and the newer ones, with older being much. MUCH better. My TCR has a cowhide cover that is as tough as nails. The text block is far better as well. My only criticism: the red letter text back then was just as bad as it is now.

    • @AFrischPerspective
      @AFrischPerspective  5 років тому

Totally agree. The quality is not as good now, and the red letter hasn't changed.

Regarding the NKJV and the leather, over the years there have been several leather types that they've used. When the NKJV edition came out they had one type of genuine leather which was quite smooth. They then offered a deluxe genuine leather which had more grain to it and was quite soft. Later they started offering genuine leather with two types of named grains. One was called Levant and it was similar to what Cambridge bibles offers as calfsplit. It has a nice pebbly look and feel. It was softer than Cambridge's calfsplit. The other grain was the Capri which is what you show in your video. Originally it looked just like the KJV in your video and was soft. This is the only grain they offer currently and as you point out, it's rather stiff.
Also, the paper quality has varied over the years with the NKJV. The best I've seen has been in the 2017/2018 printings. It appears, sadly, that the latest that you have has gone the other direction.

Thanks for the info! I wish the paper quality was as good as the last printing. Hopefully they will make some improvements in future editions.
