l have passed Rusty Rita and viewed the statue from queuing traffic on the A1 many a time on the journey from Mid Wales to my parents house in the Scottish borders near Berwick. the funniest thing about the Angel of the north is that 25 years ago the city awoke to the statue wearing a replica Newcastle shirt with number 9 Shearer on the back of it

Thanks for visiting the city of my birth, Steve! What a brilliant video. It's so easy to take this great city for granted, but you showed that it really does have a lot to offer, and a nice invitation for your followers to spend a little time in it on the way back from the Amsterdam ferry. The Building behind you as you turn the first corner is Leazes Terrace. I lived in two different parts of it when I was at Newcastle University between 1971 and 1974. The East Stand was built in 1972 and before it went up we could stand on a balcony and watch the game for free. It’s coming up fifty years old now.

I'm delighted to see this (mid-week bonus!). I'm from Whitley Bay on the coast from Newcastle and I now live a few miles south near Durham City. Newcastle is part of my stomping ground and a fabulous place. Not everyone welcomed the Angel of the North when it was built but I am among those who think it is a wonderful thing. When i first returned to the North East over 20 years ago, I'll never forget rounding that corner on the northbound A1 and catching my first glimpse. Amazing.

Another great video. The other day I watched a video walking from Victoria Station past Buckingham Palace and down the length of St. James' park in London. So with that in mind, and being a remedial geography student, I was thinking of a MUCH longer walk. 😀 On our trip to Scotland and the north back in 2000 we came upon The Angel of the North having never heard of it, this giant presence materializing out of the clouds. This was before smartphones and not long after its completion, so it remained a bit of a mystery for a few days.

I think the most handsome pub in Newcastle is the Crown Posada. I’ve not been for a while but the sound system was a Dansette record player on the bar. And you know when you see something and you can’t quite believe so you look again? Middle of the day, a woman…erm…manually assisting a bloke while stood at the bar.

That was a great wee trek Steve, I've been through Newcastle so many times on the train but never got off. Some lovely railway arches and other great buildings well worth seeing. I think you might have got confused with the railway bridges though, the high level one (with cars below) is for the Sunderland and Durham coast line, while the most inland railway bridge, the King Edward VII, is the main line to London. Thanks for letting us see more of this city.

Glad you enjoyed your walk from SJP to the Angel. I've been a resident of Gateshead for thirty years now, but my dad was from Montrose and I remember spending a year in school there between ages 5-6 in 1964-5.
You've been told the building with the clock is the old Town Hall but you also pass the new one when you talk about catching the 61/21 bus back - it's the building in the background. Also when you come off the Tyne Bridge and walk down to the Swing Bridge you pass, half way down, where there used to be an old pub, The Queen's Head. That was were the Councillor's used to meet whilst the other Town Hall was being built before 1868. So your little jaunt took you last the last three 'talking shops' for Gateshead politicians without you knowing and with another pub thrown in for good measure!

So close to me mate, you entered the dark side of the north east as a mackem though ... Enjoyed non the less but if you are ever around here again, I'd advise you visit either further up the coast or Durham, just one more stop on the train from Newcastle (10/15 mins)
That building btw is Gateshead Old Town Hall - think it isn't used as regularly now but it still hosts events etc ... Fun fact - it's the only surviving purpose-built Victorian town hall in Tyne and Wear and is one of only five comparable listed Victorian town halls in the North East.

Cheers Steve, I always think Newcastle’s a proper city (i.e. it has a heart and soul) and there’s some great nightlife too. Mind you, last time I went there I had food poisoning from an Italian restaurant’s seafood linguine - a very long story I won’t bore you with. I’m hoping to get back there this year (probably with Megabus) but suffice to say, I’ll be watching what (and where) I eat!
