Please comment of any new video ideas because I'm all out of "good" ideas. Also FYI this video is just a skim through the most well-known Japanese dialects so please don't use this video as a source even though it's accurate

Im sorry but theres many things that are wrong with this vid
1. We normally say 共通語 kyōtsūgo or 標準語 hyōjyungo instead of 共通弁 kyōtsūben
2. 2:37 You cant just randomly combine the endings with the words on the left and expect them to sound natural. Nobody says かまへんや or あかんやねん, also the っす su ending is not really characteristic of a kansai dialect

A distinction must be made between Uchinaaguchi (the indigenous Okinawan language that thrived in Okinawa before the Japanese annexation) and Uchinaa-Yamatuguchi (Japanese language spoken in Okinawa).
Haisai/Haitai is Uchinaaguchi and it's essentially a Naha expression. "Hajimiti yaa sai" is also Uchinaaguchi.
But the usage of "kaerimashou ne" meaning "I'm leaving" is Uchinaa-Yamatuguchi. It has a substratum of uchinaaguchi due to language contact. In pure Uchinaaguchi, it's "keeyabira" and that's the verb form that corresponds to the Japanese "kaerimashou". However, in Uchinaaguchi, besides meaning "let's leave", it's also used to convey the meaning "I am leaving". Okinawans only projected that meaning in the Japanese language that was being forced upon them by the Japanese government.
My boss is japanese, from Okinawa.
When I asked him if he speaks japanese he'd always answer something like "yes, but not really".
Now I get it.
My wife was born and raised in Tokyo and always complains that her accent is too boring, and that she wants something like a kansai dialect haha, I just take it to be similar to someone with a standard(?) american accent wanting to sound like a posh british person or to want a southern twang.

I can relate. I'm American and I think my English accent is too boring. There are times when I wish it was more urban.

Referring to Okinawan as a "dialect" is probably one of the greatest pieces of propaganda by the Japanese government. Okinawan languages are not at all intelligible to your typical Japanese person, and not even to each other. I don't see the point of it either, like are they so afraid Okinawa could secede and revive their old kingdom or something?
There is an actual Okinawan dialect of Japanese which most young people in Okinawa use, there's also an Okinawan language

Sounds like the situation with Polish and Silesian. Where a lot of Silesians absolutely would want to become independent from Poland and Czechia (or at least have their autonomous regions within each) but of course not all.

I believe you cited the Central Okinawan language, which is not a Japanese dialect, instead of the Japanese dialect that evolved there after Japanese colonization which to be fair, was influenced by the respective Ryukyuan languages. However, I'm not familiar if the Okinawan Japanese dialect uses -sabira endings like Uchinaaguchi (C.Okinawan).

-My sources are from websites and videos about 「~~弁」. In the video I did use the term "Okinawan" to refer 「沖縄弁」which is my bad cuz it could cause some confusion
-Im probably wrong with this (I didn't look it up yet) but sabira is probably like an optional suffix
For others reading this, my videos are edited to be broad as possible so people ranging from fools to nerds could enjoy.
@@maruhigakuenさびら is likely from しはべらむ (する's renyoukei + volitional form of 侍る) which would directly translate to しましょう
The line separating a dialect and a language is not defined. Arguing about it is total semantics. Like yeah I could say Scots is a dialect of english but the people speaking it really wouldn't like hearing that. You have places like north Africa where if you take two countries next to each other, they most likely understand each other but go another country to the right and they suddenly don't, even though the middle country can understand both. Who is to say what is a dialect of Arabic and what is it's own language when mutual intelligibility shifts based on where you are? Same with Japanese.

This probably would be a bit to boring for you to put on your channel, but could you do a video on different genres (or just a single genre) of Japanese literature, and the features peculiar to it (vocab, any funny grammar constructions, etc)? Personally I find the intonation in Osaka to be quite different from a lot of places (for example in かまへん the first mora is high in its intonation)

@05:31 Why would it be cringe to pick a dialect because you like how it sounds? Imagine choosing to learn a language you don't like the sound of! Not only does it help consolidate your knowledge of the standard version of the language by comparing, but it's also a backdoor to understanding regional cultures in a country. There might be nerds fond of etymology, like me who like to understand how the dialect diverges from the standard! People should be encouraged to learn dialects, if only to perpetuate them.
I was thinking speaking a dialect out of place would be weird but to each their own I guess

As a Osaka native, you did sound like the average Japanese from 関東 trying to speak 関西弁, absolutely butchering the pitches and sounding really weird. 💀 But maybe thats part of the magic

There was a recommendation I heard to learn Kagoshima dialect, as they also don't differentiate pitch accent, apparently? It would be cool if you could cover the Kyushuan dialects in that case!

Here is a question that I've never properly received any good answers to: if i am intermediate level reading and vocab while decently advanced level grammar wise, what and where can I get study materials for my level? the vast majority of stuff (both academic and entertainment) is either for full beginners level or full fluent, especially when it comes to reading recommendations. So what do you think is the type of stuff that intermediate people can best use?

I would encourage treating Okinawan languages as fully-fledged languages and sister languages of Japanese instead of dialects!

Those are Accents and not Dialects... Or Japanese dialects must be considered languages... No double standards, no politics, just plain consideration by using the basis of mutual intelligibility as a fact.
There is a table of mutual intelligibility in Wikipedia, which proves this point.

Tokyo-ben. Standard "default" Japanese, it is in all media.
江戸弁、山の手言葉と下町言葉、と標準語
edoben,yamanote kotoba, shitamachi kotoba, and hyoujungo(standard japanese which is the main)
the other ones have influences in various cultural aspects of japanese like you might see them in slang in anime that delinquents use or yakuza use sometimes , also some prostitutes or artistic people used in certain districts. I majored in Japanese and took a couple regional linguistic classes a while back but those names popped up.

1:12 Exactly! Okinawa used to be an independent country, the Ryukyu Kingdom, that was taken and colonised by Japan. Okinawan languages are a whole world on their own. The reason why the call Ryukyuan languages "dialect" is purely political aimed to undermine Ryukyuan culture and identity and strengthen Japan's grasp on the archipelago.
Umm no. Theres a difference between Uchinaaguchi(the actual Okinawan language) and Okinawan dialect. Its nothing political or something used to undermine the local culture. Its just you who dont know the difference between the two.
