After living on this planet and in the UK for 28 years, there have been times when it's really felt like the essence of Monty Python is literally in our blood. I've been on youth trips to the countryside, where on 3-5 mile walks there's been several choruses of 'Bright Side of Life'. Then a couple of years ago on a trip Scotland, walking around an island just off Oban me and my sisters out of nowhere did a performance of several pieces from the soundtrack of 'Holy Grail'😄Definitely in the blood! Though that island was also giving off the right vibes haha. Thinking about it now ... we weren't all that far away from where they filmed some of that. 'Meaning of Life' is certainly worth watching, which includes my favourite musical sketch from them. Outside of Python, Michael Palin's travel docs that he's been making from the 80's to the present, are really interesting! His collected diaries can also be pretty fascinating, which cover the 'Python Years' and beyond🙌
Same here, including Python-as-campfire-songs, and I live in Kentucky, where we can recite the dead parrot sketch with the best of 'em. Python are truly universal. I hear that Elvis Presley used to entertain his wife at home by imitating the Pepperpot Ladies, which would be something to hear!
There's a Film/Movie reactors never seem to touch (Pythonwise) AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. It's a compilation of their classic sketches, but reshot, added to etc. It's very funny and literally perfect as something to react to/get into Python. :)
It's an absolute piece of crap, you should absolute NEVER watch that piece of crap, not over the TV series. The sketches are all fifty times better in their TV counterparts, in front of a live audience, as opposed to mutilating them for a movie, I can't believe this guy is recommending such a piece of crap that Python themselves hated. Either watch the TV show, or don't, but DON'T watch this piece of crap. Unbelievable. The absolute WORSE way to watch Python is to watch that piece of crap.
The actress that plays Judith, Sue Jones-Davis apart from her acting became a politician. She was a Councillor, for the Plaid Cymru party in Aberystwyth, Wales and was respected and regarded well enough to become Mayor of Aberystwyth in 2008.
This film was financed by rock and pop stars, primarily George Harrison of the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, the flying circus was their weekly 30min tv comedy sketch show, there is a film of them performing some of the sketches, "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl". Many places banned the screening of Life of Brian, one of those places was a town in Wales called Aberystwyth, years later the actress who played Judith became Mayor of Aberystwyth and the ban was lifted. Incidentally, there's a film that's considered a sequel to "A Fish Called Wanda", same cast, different storyline. Check out "Fierce Creatures".
I think you would enjoy reviewing Airheads, a personal favorite. Also, ~Time Bandits~ and The Rocketeer are some , can't think of many more. I love your reactions and the laughs. Monty Python stuff is so good. 🤩
Oddly enough, the woman who played Judith was elected the mayor of a town in Wales at some point in the last few years. Her first act as mayor was to cancel the ban preventing theaters in town from showing The Life of Brian. The ban had been imposed shortly after the movie was released.
In case you weren't already aware, Terry Gilliam, the sole American member of Monty Python and the man responsible for all of the animated sequences, has had a pretty long and interesting career as a film diector. If you haven't seen them, you might want to check out Brazil, Time Bandits, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Fisher King, and/or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. All cult classics.
Time Bandits has been one of my favourite movies since it came out on VHS. I lived in the middle of nowhere and there was no theatre so you had to wait for movies to come out on video.
When Holy Grail came out there wasn't really an alternative to seeing it in theaters. Cassette movie rentals didn't heat up until after 1980 so so no video stores, no streaming, no nothing. And they certainly weren't going to air it on broadcast TV.
Edit: Ok, you looked up the cast at the end. :) But check out Fawlty Towers. :) Yes, the guy who plays Brian is Graham Chapman. You got Michael Palin Eric Idle is the guy who calls Palin "Big Nose", Terry Jones is "Mandy", Brians mum. John Cleese you'll recognise. Terry Gilliam does the animations and appears in The Holy Grail. If you want to see more of John Cleese, you might want to check out "Fawlty Towers", a sit com starring Cleese , Connie Booth, Prunella Scales, and Andrew Sachs. 2 seasons, 12 episodes. Highly recommend it.
Fantastic reaction! You included (and laughed at) one of my fave jokes which most reactors cut out or ever laugh at: When the ex leper complains about the amount of money Brian gives him, he says "There's no pleasing some people" and the ex-leper says "That's just what Jesus said, sir!" 🤣 Their TV show, "Holy Grail" and "Life Of Brian" are the essential Pythons. There's only one other movie worth watching (The Meaning Of Life) which is good, but the GREATEST is their TV show. On or off the channel, don't miss the TV show, it's totally classic, totally hilarious!!!!
One of the few films I can practically recite from memory I've watched (and listened to the soundtrack) so many times. For me their best film. Would suggest watching Time Bandits if you haven't already.
There used to be a cultish, old school flea pit cinema in Kings Cross (London) called the Scala. It used to do themed all nighters. Zombie movies, or cultish psychedelic movies from the 60's, old 50's B movies etc. One Easter Sunday I went there with friends for an Easter weekend all nighter. Greatest Story Ever Told, followed by, The Last Temptation of Christ, finishing up with, yep, you've guessed it, Life Of Brian. Scala was great, but Stanley Kubrick had it closed down. He sued them after they showed, Clockwork Orange. A film Kubrick himself had banned from being shown in the UK, due to it's effect on the violence subculture (skinheads particularly) in Britain in the early 70's. So he banned it being shown in Britain and when he found out about the Scala showing it in some of it's 'all nighters' he sued. The settlement caused The Scala to go bankrupt and close. The ban on Clockwork Orange in the UK remained until after Kubrick's death.
Graham Chapman was King Arthur in Monty Python And The Holy Grail. Monty Python's Flying Circus was a TV show - it was a series of skits (with animations by Terry Gilliam)
I'd suggest watching "And Now for Something Completely Different", which is a compilation of some of their best bits from the television series that was put together for the theater.
I am working on becoming a UA-camr and I just subscribed to your channel and I was wondering where did you get that microphone that you have in the video for RoboCop 2?
Brian was played by the monty Python member "Graham Chapman". He is absolutely brilliant and hilarious in another monty python classic "yellow beard" I highly recommend it.
If you want to check out some of Monty Python's best sketches, give these a try... The Dead Parrot/ Lumberjack Song (sort of a 2 parter if you watch the right version) Argument Clinic The Spanish Inquisition (find the longer version) The Funniest Joke in the World The Ministry of Silly Walks Dirty Hungarian Phrasebook There are loads more great ones but that's some of my favourites
Meaning of Life is my favorite, check out Jabberwocky (1977) as well, it's not a Monty Python movie but is directed by Terry Gilliam and stars Michael Palin.
If you're interested in seeing more Monty Pythonish movies, I suggest checking out "Time Bandits", created by Monty Python member and director, Terry Gilliam, and it does have several of the Monty Python members including Michael Palin and John Cleese. Time Bandits is a hidden gem of a movie that was fairly well done given it's time and budget.
It did ruffle feathers. Here's a British talk show interview right after it came out in 1979, in which Cleese and Palin debate an archbishop, and Cleese gets visibly angry. ua-cam.com/video/ZYMpObbt2rs/v-deo.html
From the original TV show the following two clips are worth checking out. 1. Ministry of Silly Walks and 2. Dead Parrot. There's plenty more but those are a good start.
Welcome back, Angel (saw you came back with Boogie Nights. Did you like Marky Mark's fake long wang? ;P XD Just kidding, just kidding ;) There is Monty Python's Meaning of Life and also a compilation movie of their sketches called And Now For Something Completely Different. Highly recommend all of them =) Well you know John Cleese and Michael Palin, the others are Graham Chapman (passed away in 1989), Eric Idle, Terry Jones (passed away 2-3 years ago) and Terry Gilliam (the only American in the group and he mostly did their iconic, funny animations. He later became a director doing movies like Brazil and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas).
"Time Bandits" (1981) is like half a Monty Python film. It has both John Cleese and Michael Palin in it, and it was directed by Terry Gilliam. I highly recommend watching it. 😉👍
I hope you'll react to Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983) at some point in your journey. It's not the most well-known or most popular movie in their catalogue, but it is my personal favorite and has some prime "bits".
Terry Gilliam, the only American Python, is their animator, and an award winning director in his own right. Brazil and The Fisher King are just two of his many astonishing and visionary films.
Clockwise 1986 John Cleese will have you in stitches and the debate between the church of england and John and Michael is on UA-cam John and Michael absolutely own the church with a solid argument
You could watch The Magic Christian. It's a pre-Python movie, but some of the people who ended up in Monty Python helped writing and are in it. It also co-stars Ringo Star for some reason.
Great channel but you are missing some important movies.. Please add them to your list 1. Jaws 1975 2. Airplane 1980 3. Batchelor Party 1984 4. The Terminator 1984 5. Marathon Man 1976
I've been hoping that you'd react to a movie I like because you're fun to watch. Actually, some of what you've reacted to lately, I do like but have just seen too many times. If you like John Cleese, you should be aware of his later show "Fawlty Towers" about an incompetent hotel in rural England - actually more of a holiday town than rural. It's one of the greatest comedies that ever appeared on television. I hope that everything else is going well for you.
Hello I'm loving your takes and it's so cool. I have something for you to stand out from every body else. You should watch " A man called Otto " it stars Tom Hanks and is one of his best movies and NOBODY is doing it. And another love comedy is called Defending your life and it stars Meryl Streep and it's SO wonderful but no one is doing it because it's from the 80's. We'll tyvm
Giving Holy Grail a rewatch is a great way to familiarize yourself with the Pythons faces and voices - Graham Chapman (RIP) plays Arthur, John Cleese is Lancelot, Eric Idle is Sir Robin, Michael Palin is Galahad, Terry Jones (RIP) is Sir Bedevere, and Terry Gilliam is Patsy. Gilliam and Jones co-direct the Python movies - Meaning of Life being the last. Gilliam goes off to be an incredible director, and the rest go off onto their own projects, with or without other Pythons. The 'Python-adjacent' movies, with 2 or more of the crew, are also great. Some of the underrated ones are Erik The Viking (Jones & Cleese - avoid the 'directors cut'), Splitting Heirs (Idle & Cleese), Fierce Creatures (same cast as Fish Called Wanda) and Yellowbeard (Chapman, Cleese & Idle)
There was the pirate spoof movie called yellow beard from 1983. It was a collaboration between monty python and cheech and chong. And if you want to watch any cheech and chong movies i'd recamend the corsican brothers movie. Very funny movie.
This film satirizes UK polotics - at the time liberal parties were fighting for purity of ideas while the conservative party consolidated power. It also pokes fun at ALL organized religion using the Judeo-Christian model.
I think it was more of a joke about the Marxist groups in the UK rather than the liberal parties. There were a lot of tiny little Marxist sects with small memberships that seemed to spend more time fighting amongst themselves than taking on the establishment.
@@asterix7842 I was going to say just that. And I bet Terry Gilliam was indulging his VFX chops a bit after seeing what Dykstra did on Star Wars, given his interest in technical moviemaking.
From Life of Brian to Fiddler on the Roof! What a gear change. Of course both movies have singing, and both movies are waiting for the Messiah. One good way of learning who's who in the Python troupe is to watch some of the original TV series, which was Monty Python's Flying Circus. They would play different characters the same way, but seeing as it was lower budget TV it's easier to see who's doing what. The troupe were all writer/comedians coming out of other shows. John Cleese and Graham Chapman were college buddies who were part of At Last The 1948 Show, in which you can see the roots of Python. Michael Palin and Terry Jones were writers on a more kid-oriented history comedy show. They got Terry Gilliam to do animations, the idea being they could use cartoons to link sketches without always having to have a traditional punchline. This kept things moving fast, which is about the only meaning "flying circus" had. Carol Cleveland was an unofficial member of the troupe. She was the go-to performer when they needed a real woman and couldn't get away with just putting a dress on Terry Jones. In Holy Grail, she was Zoot, the lady of Castle Anthrax who tried to seduce Sir Gawain (Michael Palin).
I still see Monty Python's Flying Circus as the predecessor to SNL. I grew up in that era, but was often not allowed to stay up late enough to watch them, so I relied upon sleep overs. On PBS here, Monty Python was late '70's, which is pretty much where SNL started, although Monty Python was actually much earlier, the license contracts delayed its airing.
"Apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system, and public health ... what have the Romans ever done for us?" This has got to be the funniest line any resistance cell have ever uttered 😂
This is great movie my favorite is Holy Grail tho! Wonderful reaction Angel, you are very entertaining!! I love your reactions and your amazing hair! Best wishes and much love always!! 🙂❤
Jolly good show Angel 😇 ,There is another loverly Tv series with John Cleese called " Fawlty Towers " its 1970s i guarantee that you will laugh an awfully lot ,
The HMS Sheffield was heavily damaged by an Exocet anti-ship missile during the Falklands war in the early 1980's. The crew had abandoned ship and a junior officer led the men in a rendition of "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life."
I love that he accidentally started a religion and within 2 minutes it had already split into two factions, the followers of the shoe and the followers of the gourd
For a decent sampling of their show, try "And Now For Something Completely Different". It's basically a best of collection of clips from the show, although some were re-done for the movie, in order to improve the flow between skits.
If you like a fish called Wanda, you need to watch “fierce creatures”. It’s the same exact cast as a fish called Wanda, completely different movie. But totally fun. I liked it better than fish called Wanda.
I don't know how to say this without being a prat, but there are so many key moments cut out of this reaction that I found it not all that engaging to watch. Your own reactions were good. May I suggest that in any future reactions for shows that you leave the key moments in place so the viewers can enjoy them?
The song at the end is one of the favourite songs at British funerals. This was voted one of the greatest comedy of all time.
Graham Chapman plays Brian Cohen and Biggus Dikkus
John Cleese plays the Head Priest at the Stoning, the Head Centurion and Reg, the Leader of the PFJ
Michael Palin plays Mr. Big Nose, the ex-leper beggar, Pontius Pilate, the boring preacher, and the guy hanging in the prison cell
Eric Idle plays the obnoxious guy at the Sermon, Stan/Loretta, and the beard salesman. He also wrote and sang "Always Look on The Bright Side of Life"
Terry Jones plays Brian's mother (Mandy) and the mystic with the juniper bushes
Terry Gilliam plays the fire and brimstone preacher and the deaf guard
Sue Jones-Davies plays Judith Iscariot
You have to look quick to see him, but George Harrison plays Mr Papadopoulos, a member of the People's Front of Judea.
“You haven’t given us time to hide!”
Meaning of Life is the best of their movies.
SO many unforgettable moments! I swap around but I always come back to Meaning of Life. I think it helped me be a more rebellious questioning youth 😅
Our lovely and sweet hearted Angel returns👼🥰
Angel, the look on your face during the alien abduction scene was priceless. lol!
It's pretty funny that your stomach growled as the Wolf Nipple Chips were being served, LOL

Yeah it seems to get forgotten about for no reason, it litterally has the worlds funniest joke
Honestly, it's my least favorite of their three movies. I don't really like it. For their sketches, I prefer the original show.
It's an absolute piece of crap, you should absolute NEVER watch that piece of crap, not over the TV series. @@DavidEllis94 i understand that, its a bunch of mostly unrelated sketches, not really a movie

John Cleese once said in an interview about divorces... "one of my ex wives died and it was kinda sad... because it was the wrong one!"

"Consider the lily!" Probably my favourite piece of dialogue 😅😂
Your face when the spaceship scooped up Brian was so adorable.🤣 Perfect reaction to that scene.♥
Yeah, the alien abduction scene out of nowhere... let's just say that "ancient astronaut" theory was alive and well at the time this movie was made.
This was just a couple years after the success of Star Wars, and sci-fi was suddenly all the rage.
@@asterix7842 I was going to say just that. And I bet Terry Gilliam was indulging his VFX chops a bit after seeing what Dykstra did on Star Wars, given his interest in technical moviemaking.
The star the wise men follow at the beginning is moving, so I always assume they were actually following a spaceship in orbit.
Where you cut out Loretta?
Everybody gets one.
If you want some more top tier work from John Cleese check out the Fawlty Towers series.
Ocaptain my captain
the film is Not poking fun at jesus but about the groups around him
King Arthur and Brian were Graham Chapman. Sadly he died young because of AIDS.
This is great movie my favorite is Holy Grail tho! Wonderful reaction Angel, you are very entertaining!! I love your reactions and your amazing hair! Best wishes and much love always!! 🙂❤
Jolly good show Angel 😇 ,There is another loverly Tv series with John Cleese called " Fawlty Towers " its 1970s i guarantee that you will laugh an awfully lot ,
Guess you didn't catch George Harrison cameo during your editing.
Hi Angel!
As you can clearly see, Graham Chapman (Brian) is not at all Jewish :)
she looks like Dakota Fanning
The HMS Sheffield was heavily damaged by an Exocet anti-ship missile during the Falklands war in the early 1980's. The crew had abandoned ship and a junior officer led the men in a rendition of "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life."
Hello Angel 😇 you are a Beautiful Soul 💗
I love that he accidentally started a religion and within 2 minutes it had already split into two factions, the followers of the shoe and the followers of the gourd
Wow you skipped the whole Loretta scene. 🤦🏻♂️ so applicable today. I quit watching at that point.
Male actors, pretending to be Women dressed as Men with fake beards... just genius!
If you like the opening credits you should check out Terry Gilliam's other movies. He did all the animations for Monty Python.
Thumbs down to anyone so woke as yo edit out the "I want to be a man" skit
For a decent sampling of their show, try "And Now For Something Completely Different". It's basically a best of collection of clips from the show, although some were re-done for the movie, in order to improve the flow between skits.
You really have to watch 'The Meaning Of Life' brilliant stuff
Throwing down a vote for the 1999 horror/dark comedy “Ravenous”
Avoid any trailers haha. Go in blind.
Do HOLY GRAIL!
Do THE MEANING OF LIFE!
Do LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL!
This movie is more than criminally funny. I'm not sure my devout Catholic parents ever forgave me for taking them to see it. Romans go home!!!
Angel, have you ever seen "This is Spinal Tap"?
( Good to see you posting again ).
