The whole idea behind calling movies made here, in India as "Musicals" is pretty new. To us, this has always been the norm. Infact, way before "Cinema", even the plays that were done around india had songs in them and they still do.
"Item songs" have always involved sexual/seductive dance sequences. It's mostly women too.

I guess item songs are being defined as a female actress cameo performance. SRKs the lead in that movie so it might not count. I would say Deewangi Deewangi is more of an item song in that movie than Dard-E-Disco. Lots of cameos, male and female.

Controversies aside, yes we girls too love item songs. Selling point for us (if nicely done) is the confidence of dancer or actress, costumes and fashion, dance, and overall charm.
idk if you guys read comments or not, but--- item songs, the "item" being the girl, have always been (99.7% of the time) about women dancing for men, in any particular scene, and being the item of their desires. even in the past, men WOULD dance, but weren't ever dancing for just women and being the object of sexual desire for them.
and as you can probably tell, it is a very heteronormative concept.

Edit: I was born in 80s and I don’t remember any point of my life where Hindi film music was not a part of our daily lives. I remember back then before a movie released 2 events were extremely important - movie announcement (muhurat shot/first shot) & music release. Both of these events were attended by huge press (media) and almost the entire industry. The aim was to create a hype among people. Rickshaws with loudspeakers were hired to announce the movie and snippet of its soundtracks were played. Before that in 1950s & 1960s little booklets with lyrics of the songs were sold. So no matter how does the movie performed at the box office the music stayed with the masses. In 2000s the concept of an item song/ promotional song was introduced, most of the times top actress who were not the part of the cast were hired for such songs these item songs had nothing to do with storyline and sometimes it was played as credits rolled out. Again the same aim- you’ll eventually forget the movie but the songs will remain with you and in those days people went back to the theatres just for the songs.

The girls in these numbers were traditionally called items(objects) and hence item songs. Its just degrading to women that they are still called item numbers...
The degradation is in your mind and thinking. Women are lining upto do item songs in Bollywood. Do you think people look down onto Nora or Katrina?

The item songs have always had attractive women. Then a few years ago, somewhere around 2015, this became a hot topic for debate as well that whether there should be item boys too but turned out it was very hard to get an item song with male leads right or that successful. Mostly people enjoyed female leads having an item song even women. I personally think a major reason for that is that female carried item songs are enjoyed by both men and women...I mean I love watching nora dance or any lady being that captivating. I'm just like wow she's awesome whereas guys don't enjoy watching guys dance or them flexing their bodies that much😂Another reason why women too enjoy having female leads, although it could be a stretch, is that most girls here love to dance and we try to copy them whereas it's not that common for guys to like to dance so they don't mind not having anyone to copy... Guys here are either terrible at dancing or professional dancers. There are very few who try to be good at it just as a hobby. Although we do get some item songs with male leads like ranveer singh in tatad tatad but mostly main attraction in these songs are women. And you are right... we have started getting more item songs where both men and women dance . I think it's because it's recently that male actors have also been that good at dancing. There were hardly one or two actors up until like mid 2000s who were good at dancing. Now having such good male dancers are actually encouraging guys to be interested in dance too

imo the item songs are mainly meant to be catchy and commercial. The songs are released way before the movie itself so these item songs help to grab the gp's attention. The visuals/dance aspect of it is mainly targeted towards young male audience, especially in the earlier bollywood years. People watched the film multiple times in theatres just to rewatch the song *Tip Tip Barsa Paani* (the one with the rain and actress in yellow sari).
So yeah, these days its mostly meant to be a catchy pop song that helps popularize the movie for promo. The success of most movies depends greatly on its musical score. You would want people to know your song, the actors and choreo by the time the actors start doing promo stuff.
Also you must realise by now that most of these dance numbers have a trademark/iconic move. You could say *Ek Pal Ka Jeena* and everyone would literally SEE Rhitik Roshan doing his iconic move.
So during promo time the main cast goes around to different TV shows where their movie is introduced and they almost always have to perform a bit of said iconic song to create hype. The audience obvs has at least heard OF the song so they're more interested in watching the movie itself.
Anyway, getting back to the point, its mostly these item songs that hype up the gp. Love songs can and often do achieve the same thing but having an item song is a more guaranteed thing. Once the gp likes the song and it starts playing on radio/tv there is literally no escaping it.
Item songs are a marketing thing - sometimes they're even the main draw for a movie. Also, they're just fun (when there isnt extreme male gaze) and have everyone in the theater dancing. You won't convince me that songs like dhoom machale, shiela ki jawani, and ek do teen weren't as popular with women as they were with men.
Don't let the comments convince you its all misogynistic. It is very possible to make a popular item song that doesnt objectify women and the most popular item songs have actually been very female gaze-y (look up Shiela ki Jawani and Ek Do Teen).

@@EagleOverTheSea do you know what female gaze means? it means there were no zoomed in shots of body parts and it wasn't shot in a way where the woman was objectified. you can be sexy and it can still be female gaze! even the lyrics themselves were more empowering.
Mithun's Disco Dancer could have been added to the list also. And some of the Bappi Lahiri songs of that time..
Let me just correct y'all once and for all. Item songs is a very questionable concept and gravitates a lot towards misogyny. The "items" in item songs are apparently girls hired for entertainment particularly dancing which i think people do in high profile parties and in arabic culture as far as i know. Do look up "Mujra" for further info on this topic.

That's like the 2000's version of being woke. "Don't objectify women! Boooo! Now, excuse me, I am going to watch some porn." Nowadays, we are more and more recognizing that it's a woman's choice to do sex work, whether its legal or illegal. Yes, there are times, when it's not their choice, but I am not talking about that. If we want women to have more independence, then we also have to recognize that they are not children who can't take responsibility for their choices.
Honestly terms such as "item" referring to girls are just uncomfortable and degrading..
But I m not sure how concept "item numbers" have originated .. Because many a times when we showcase a performance or prepare something to present, that is also referred to as an item be it skit, dance or anything of that nature..So it's not used in a degrading way.. If that's how the term item numbers have started then it gives a different perspective..
And about the term "item girls " if it's because of this term that people have started using it as an degrading term to refers girls or it's the other way around .. Anyways it's uncomfortable..

Item songs are catchy good for marketing and it creates hype for the movie. Young beautiful womens with good dance moves, music and fashion sense attracts everyone to come and watch the movie. Its a concept of the indian film industry. Their are many item songs of men also like dhoom, jhalak dikhlaja, dard e disco.
The last one was "kaavaalaa song" starring Tamannah and Rajnikanth sir......watch it it's fantastic

One can divide Indian audience is many segments, one in one the basis of category of cities/town. Like Metro+big town audience and small town audience.
In Metro+big cities can also divide further, like friends+families and one is migrant worker+labour. Small town audience+ migrant worker+labour audience is basically male dominating, more in numbers and prefer low cost multiplex.
And they are the main target audience for item numbers.

You should watch the movie The Dirty Picture it’s actually some of the history of the first Item girl her life& has Emraan Hashmi in it. The songs here are some of the iconic ones that have pretty big stars so there’s a level of respect but especially earlier on the items girls are really just treated like no names or girls who can’t do anything other than the sexy song. A lot of those girls never get a acting role they are just marketed as the item girl. You start to notice big actresses who start doing the items songs in the 2010s and big stars would be paid big bucks to just do an item song for a movie they aren’t in. But in general the items girls are really boxed in to do this sexy image and that’s all they’re good for. Nora is the most recent hit item girl and she gets treated pretty decently maybe cause she’s not Indian and times have changed a bit. Also earlier on guys would literally jump and holler at the theatre watching the item songs and would buy a ticket to just watch it again. In general I think the movie theatre experience is wild but item songs would sell tickets in the earlier days.
Item songs are mostly marketed towards young male audience imo. Much like some shoujo or a love track in a commercial film is marketed towards female audience, in most of the cases. Like item songs, sometimes in some A list actors films, even if there is no need of a love track, you can see them adding it just for the sake of it for the market.
Songs like dilli wali girlfriend or bole chudiyan etc numbers like that are neutral imo. Both female and male audience watch them but I feel like mostly women consume these kinds of stuff as I feel like they are mostly into dancing during weddings or school cultural programmes etc.
Items numbers are given in Indian movies purely to catch attention.. they have catchy beats, beautiful womens, doing provocative or sexy dance moves to make the movie appear a bit more spicier like there's another phenomena in Indian movie industry called 'Masala' which means spice but it entails having the full package our movies are long, and the producers do everything for the attention. The songs are released before the movies and they do a stellar job of selling the movie. In India people are crazy for music but even crazier for dance music. The famous song "Kala chasma" from the movie "Bar bar dekho" is a good example of this. That song I famous all over the world. So having these item songs are not necessary for the movie but having them is playing it safe, traditional and just fun you know one of those Desi things
They are not traditional. Barring the Helen and Madhuri era, they weren't even essential for movies to attract attention in the 20th century. They became the main draw in the 21st century particularly when the movie did not have any other strong song in it.

Male leads were also there as far as I remember since dileep kumar and amitabh bachhan. It's just that they are not included here. Songs like Pag ghunghroo bandh , ude jab jab zulfe teri etc etc had had male dancers. Male and female both have been dancers here.

True. Dabangg was successful and popular but Munni Badnaam was a spectacular worldwide hit whose echoes resonated the globe years on after Dabangg was gone from the cinemas. Good Item songs survive past the movie.

Imo most streamed composer has always been Pritam etc as his work is mostly in Bollywood, unlike ARR.

Item songs were mostly seductive and was not culturally accepted, and we dont have the concept of item boy/men... Its just item girl! These songs really helped us accept modernization in terms of fashion! And helped us keep changing our ideology from primitive towards modernization!
am i the only one dumbfounded at how this compilation video just.. skipped past DECADES of some of the most iconic and beautiful cabaret numbers... Only 2-3 song selected for the 50s and 60s? Asha Bhosle probably had at least 1 iconic sensual number every month lol.

Items songs is a weird concept of indian movie industries.. and mostly done by women in the industry... these women bring glamour and kind of seductiveness through those songs.. and the lyrics are not always some of the nicest (cuz mostly it objectify a women) but the song has that factor to get popular.. in the old bollywood helen (salman khan's step mom) was famous for her item dance and today nora fatehi has taken that title..

Data for men and women movie goers could be inaccurate. One they don't know who is buying from ticket window and for whom which is the majority of tickets sold in single screen theatres in India. In multiplexes with online bookings many housewives will skew the data as they can book weekend or week night show online for entire family but as a movie goer that entire set of tickets will be labelled as women movie goers

It's been released in multiple languages. The original version is in tamil, but all the other versions were also masterd and done absolutely in sync to the music with all the lyrics of different languages, in comparison with few other multilingual movies which doesn't much focus on the dubbing or lyrics too well. So you can listen to any of them or just best pick the tamil version of the song to have that raw feel in synchronised music. Hope you guys will definitely enjoy it. ✌🏻🙌🏻🤘🏻☺🎉

ITEM SONGS are usually always boys. I think the Big B one you saw in the video might be one of the few that was only male. Cuz the item songs was always that "sexy It girl" sex appeal seduction song, which is usually depicted by women.
