- A short video contrasting liberal and realist approaches to international relations.
Check out the other videos in my Theories of International Relations playlist at • Mainstream Theories of... .
Let me tell you sir, this really helps a lot with my study. As someone who's not into this kind of subject, it is kinda hard for me to digest all the information and theories but this is so well made and clear. Thank you sir! :)
I agree. I was overwhelmed with all these new theories and I often didn't grasp the difference but Noah Zerbe keeps it simple, precise and easy to understand. It's actually fun to watch his videos to learn.
Noah buddy this got me through my end of year exams, you the homie and deserve a reward!!
Glad to hear it was helpful! Good luck in your studies.
The best comparison in youtube that I could find. Thank you!!
I like the idea that you can explain state decisions pertaining to economics with Realism and state decisions pertaining to maintaining partnerships with Liberalism. I’ve head a lot of talk about Constructivism being somewhere in between and more representative of the future of IR. Would be interested in hearing anyone’s thoughts on that!
This was a great explanation. I have a seminar on this tomorrow and this truly helped, thank you so much!😃
Glad it was helpful! I hope your exam went well.
I don't study poletics but i had the thought to search about this randomly even though i had no previous ideal !
Precise, concise and Very elaborate. Thank you very much
You have made me find interest in IR.
Your videos are beautiful and well summarized.
Warm Greetings all the way from Ghana.
@@NoahZerbe Thank you.
best summary so far reallyyyyyyyyy helpful thanks.
To answer your question in the end of the video:
From what I've learned so far and witnessed on the news, I think Liberalism tends to describe a system of democratic states better whereas Realism describes a situation with many/powerful autocratic states involved better:
Democratic states tend to have less interest in war (democratic peace) and seem to collaborate more, build institutions and see humans as "good". They believe in peace. Autocratic states have egoists (selfish) leaders who want to spread and increase their power. I doubt they are interested in peace, but security and if possible, war to further increase their power. The individual has little to say and is oppressed. Therefore, the state is key actor.
You have a more utopian view of International system just like the the statesmen of interwar period in Europe, You actually got wrong with the rationality of states.
@@xixi1x34 ?
@@jannickharambe8550 Brother there is a difference between a state of war and a state of conflict, according to me you actually got wrong at that point. Also you ignored "the great power game" but actually nvm.
@@xixi1x34 you sound like a typical "know it better than everyone else" type of student. God you must be lonely, get well soon
Very informative ❤😮
Happy to hear it. Thanks for watching!
Please upload approaches and transition from Classical to Behaviorism approach.

Constructivism vs Positivist
thank you sir.
dear professor, I entered very important exam in Turkey and in the exam
The question was "which term is not used by realists by defining world politics?"
a) Cooperation b) Balance of Power c) Geopolitics d) Realpolitik e) Security
The answer is A. I assumed that the term "cooperation" used to define world politics and they say that cooperation is not possible. Can we say that they didn't use this term to define world politics? And, I chose the other wrong answer which was the geopolitics. What are your thoughts about that THANK YOU!
Thanks for the question. I think you chose the best answer. Realists are generally suspicious about the ability to achieve cooperation in global politics. So while the question could have been worded better, you got the correct answer. Well done!

Sir ,could you please make a video on theoretical approach of national security
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see what I can do. In the meantime, you might find this a useful starting point: ua-cam.com/video/SSZYt0MpPtA/v-deo.html
Waooo....amazing...Love you brother.....
This is more helpful than college...... But don't tell this to my teacher😂
very simplified and comprehensible
Thank you for making such an out-standing video and making it easier for us to better understand these two theories' differences. I wonder whether these theories are to explain the way IR works or how it should work? Do politician see themselves as a believer in X-theory and decide to make policies or pursue policies accordingly? Thank you in advance for your reply.
Thank you,teacher
Thanks for watching!
Which school of thought best explain current international system?
I'm not sure I can answer that question. As I explain in the theory introduction lecture, each theoretical approach has its strengths and weaknesses. Each is better at explaining some elements of the international system and not as good at explaining others. So I wouldn't say that one is the best at explaining global politics, but that each has its strengths and weaknesses.
@@NoahZerbe Thanks
Thank you so much! Now, during Russian-Ukraine wartime that is very important to undestant the reasons.
Thanks a lot for your contribution! Often watch your videos!)
Thank you so much SIR🌼
Thank you very much sir
Thanks for watching!
Dear professor, I was wondering if you have any references for the video. I am currently writing a big paper for my studies and would like to use what you said in these videos but cannot find certain information in academic references. Thank you!
You can cite UA-cam sources

Teacher, are there any commen sides between liberalism and realism?
Classical liberalism and classical realism are both explanations rooted in human nature (good vs. bad), and they both emphasize the importance of history. But neoliberalism and neorealism have much more in common than classical liberalism and classical realism. Good luck in your studies!
I go with liberalism
Does realist believe that war is rooted in human nature?
For classical realists, yes, war is a function of human nature. For structural realists, no, war is a function of the anarchic nature of the international system. So it depends on which realist school of thought you're considering. Thanks for watching, and good luck in your studies!
sir who are structural realists? Are they neorealists?
@@samirahussain6317 i think yes

I don’t fully agree
Thanks sir
Just wanted to know the idea
Personally I believe Islamic law is the best cuz I’m also a Muslim and second of all I agree to its logical laws
Please check it out too
It’s so diverse, sharia aka islamic law
sharia law is the worst law to live under by far, hence way even Muslims flee from sharia states to non-sharia states, and even to non-islamic countries just to get away from sharia law.
Theirs a very good reason way Islamic State is the most disgusting group of people since the Communists, Fascists and Nazis, and its not just because their a terrorist organization.
Religious law itself is the worst kind of law, religious fundamentalism and "logic" do not go together, which is why religious laws do not have "logical laws", and the notion that sharia law has any "logical laws" is laughable at best.
"As a legal system, the Sharia law is exceptionally broad. While other legal codes regulate public behaviour, Sharia regulates public behaviour, private behaviour, and even private beliefs. Compared to other legal codes, the Sharia law also prioritizes punishment over rehabilitation and favours corporal and capital punishments over incarceration. Of all legal systems in the world today, the Sharia law is the most intrusive and restrictive, especially against women."
www.billionbibles.org/sharia/sharia-law.html
If their was a competition between sharia law and common law to see which one is more superior and more moral... sharia law would be demonstrably defeated by common law.
i think liberalism is better
@@NoahZerbe honestly im new student in international relation , and im sure that my knowledge is not as good as you. well all the theory has deficiency and advantages, but if i compare both of those, why liberalism more accurate? cause it more humane. will you explain me what are you prefer of those thought? its my honour to talk to you my proffesor
@@suniyyahpuspitasari2497 "why liberalism more accurate? cause it more humane."
What?
How on earth is liberalism being "more humane", more of an accurate description of global politics than Realism?
Just because something is more humane, doesn't in any way possible on that bases make that thing an accurate description of anything that you apply it to, if reality itself is anything to go by.
Is you're presupposition that, ether human nature is naturally humane, or that, reality itself is naturally humane?
Non of them seem to to ring true...
so why do you believe that because liberalism is some how more humane, that then means that liberalism is more of an accurate description of global politics?
what, do believe that global politics is some how marked by compassion, sympathy, or consideration for humans or animals, or, showing kindness, care, and sympathy towards others, especially those who are suffering?
If you just take even a quick glans though history, you'll find that "humane" doesn't even come close to being an accurate description of global politics... their have been times ware "humane" is less way off, however, those times have been few and far between and have been and still are, the exception not the norm... that's less "humane" but nonetheless its very much true, if history is anything to go by.
Realism is always been the part of everyone's life because of their self interest and national interest
