Valverde's diligence is also worth mentioning as he kept moving up and down the right channel in 3 positions (RW, RM, RB) - many times to the right-back position to cover Liverpool's attack on the left flank when their 3 forwards were positioned narrow. I recall Captain America when he used to take punches and went down. But everytime he gets up and says "I can do this all day".
It's exactly how Real Madrid dealt with Liverpool today. They soaked up the pressure throughout the game and when they got the chance they buried Liverpool.
This is nothing but mentality this club has. I know as a student even if you are not in a good position but you have a fighter's mentality you can do miracles. But it is easier said than done. You start questioning yourself, you think you have lost a lot of time now. Being in a mindset itself is not an easy thing. Once someone develops that characteristic he is bound to be a champion in his life.
Hats off to real madrid. We should learn the importance of mindset and mental character from Real Madrid and try to bring this in our personal lives. We would become unbeatable for sure.

People who says Real Madrid are lucky doesn't watch them or understand them.
Their gameplan for big games are always to soak up the pressure until a slight chance opens up, with how clinical Vini and Benz are this season it's bound to work a good amount of times.
Besides, it's not like defending a lot of the time are easy, especially against Liverpool. This happened as well against City, Chelsea, PSG. It's not easy getting dominated most of the game and biding your chance but they can afford to do that with Courtois and their experienced players.
All they need is just one chance and then boom it's a goal, it's what they do, it's what they train to do.
This strategy has also backfired a number of times, it's not like it's perfect sometimes they rely too much on counter attack, but today is not one of those days.

I mean if you had followed Liverpool, the team was completely knackered for the past two months or so. They were still grinding out results but were nowhere near the high tempo and clinical finishing they displayed at the start of the season when they were scoring goals for fun and wrapping up matches in the first 30 minutes. Playing every match available to them this season and competing for every trophy available really took a toll on the team both physically and mentally. So in UCL final when Liverpool did not score in the first 30 minutes it was always going to be difficult for them to win from that point.

Real is a very smart team. Yes they defended deep, but Liverpool never had any clear chances. All of their chances were forced. There would always be a defender on top of the attacker. Thus, making it so much easier for courtois to make saves. What I really noticed they did so well was tire out the opponent. This is something that I would only see teams like Spain in 09 -12/ FC Barcelona 09/ 12 do to the opposition. However, this Madrid team has become masters at this. You wait for the opening once the opposition is tired and you punish them. Always in control of the game and managing the timing ⏱. Liverpool failed to understand this and just presses on all game. Eventually they tired out and got caught precisely when they were playing their best. I’m not sure how Klopp did not prepare for this. Every time Liverpool took control of the ball they rush forward just to quickly loose the ball again. Had they took their time moved the ball around. They would have forced Madrid to come up and press, thus making Madrid get tired themselves. At this rate this Madrid team can easily win another 3 champions in the next 5 years. So far the only team I’ve seen understand the fact that Madrid is waiting to tire out the opponent has been Barcelona in the second leg at Bernabeu. Who gave Madrid a taste of their own medicine by pressing up high and waiting for Madrid to throw that long ball. Since Vinicius and Benz are not that tallest strikers you can usually take the ball back through the air, but instead of attacking right away. You wait and pass the ball around to tire them
Out and force them to come forward were you can easily punish Alaba and militao with a long ball if you have pacey player. Overall amazing job by Madrid and a poor job by klopp who failed to understand that timing and endurance play a huge role in these type of matches. Chapo Madrid.

Their idea of football is to press indefinitely thinking that the athleticism of their players is the end all be all of the match. Players are still human and they tire and when they're tired they make mistakes. Real Madrid is a traditional and strict team, they play to control the timing and tempo and they play to possess the ball and look for 'smart' plays not just any play. Constant presses work wonderfully against other teams that play similar as well as teams that are simply not that full of talent, but when confronted by a highly disciplined and skillful possession team, they fall short.

Hi, for me the goal came about by the astute swap of positions by Modric and Carvajal, with Fabinho failing to provide the pressure that was needed to make the gegenpressing effective. So Modric found Carvajal. And Henderson failed to press Casemiro, who received from Carvajal and next had a free pass line to Valverde. Carvajal moreover outpaced Robertson to create an overlap, which made it difficult for Van Dijck to decide whether to take out the center pass or to cover for the overlap. TAA should probably by then have left Benzema to Konaté and switch his gegenpress position for a defensive wingback position againts Vinicius, but clearly things went too fast for him to do so. TAA's mistake is the obvious one but it all starts with Fabinho, provoked by the astute position swap by Modric and Carvajal.

Another great analysis from our FMS guru. It’s obvious even before this video that not only are you smart, but very nice. However you are TOO nice to Trent. After the Vinicius goal, I immediately texted my son “Want evidence why Trent is not first choice right back for England? You just saw it.” His activity during this play was a youth soccer level mistake, ball watching while Junior drifted unopposed to the 6 yard box for the easy tap in. Normally, Liverpool might have shrugged that off, but Courtois was playing out of his mind and thus Liverpool’s fate was sealed. Congrats to Real, but here’s the thing: if RM were in the Premier League, they would be challenged to finish in a Champions League place. Probably they would, because they have a great coach and first rate attacking talent, but it would not be a given and you can imagine them struggling.

You guys missed the critical details why Liverpools attack failed to beat Courtois. To beat Courtois, you have to draw him to either side of the goal. To do This, you have to overload either side with short passes in tight spaces because RMA had Compressed the space from 18 yards in. To attack tight spaces, LFC needed the deft touches of Firmino rather than the long range passing of Thiago. KLopp realized his mistake too late!

Terribly biased analysis. You only described what liverpool did, not what Real did to counter their high pressure and you had the gals to claim that liverpool outplayed Real. Real was happy to soak up all the high pressure from liverpool players. In fact, Real created more danger in the 2 actions (one wrongly disallowed goal and the goal) and then they went back to defending the result, while Liverpool players inflated the xG stats with forced long distance shoots that were done at the border of the penalty area, or crosses to Salah that went directly to Courtois (and Courtois was in top form and didn't mess up). There wasn't a single moment that Real felt threatened by the reds compared to their games against City, PSG or Chelsea

As a coach, i saw most of what you describe here, Mane dropping to feed the other 2( Salah, Diaz). After the goal, Salah slid in to let more space for TAA and Henderson etc.. Also Kroos and Modric positioning. I agree in possession Modric pushed in that space between Fabihno and Robertson to receive. I do not agree with the "out of possession" shape of Madrid, there were in 4-5-1, with 9 players behind the ball, and Modric only move forward when he was sure Vinicius & Valverde were already in position. At any given time Madrid has 8 players behind the ball. This is where Klopp failed. Thiago should never start this match, he was injured just a few days before, not 100%, and Keita is better at dribbling therefore could have created more chance centrally or in the half-space. Also, Konate against this Madrid, was not good in possession, even though he handle Vinicius in 1-on-1(Matip could have done it too), but in possession, Matip could have outnumbered Madrid with his ball control and qualities controlling forward, as sometimes he does in the premier league.
As soon as I saw the lineup, I knew Real Madrid has better chances to win if they score first. Really what cost Liverpool the CL is the pursuit of City. Not even rest for players, Salah totally crammed and out of confidence, not even enough time to study the weakness(es) of Madrid. The men of the match were Valverde et Courtois, Fabinho & Mane on the Liverpool side. Special mention for Konate who play in the first CL final & Diaz,(who was also tired, he never stopped playing since January). Rotation is the greatest weakness of Klopp and costs always at the end of the season. My question why does he never trust his bench players? Minamino is not good enough to make the difference? Did Oxlade forget how to play? Firmino lost his qualities?

I just love the fact, that when other teams do this counter-attack based it’s anti-football, but when real madrid does it, all of the sudden it’s just a genius tacitc. Meanwhile Real having players that are capable of playing good football, and it’s not really a Real Madrid identity to park the bus or defend this deep in any way. The reason why Liverpool has only 2,19 Xg’s from like 10 shots on goal is beacuse Real Madrid defended so deeply, liverpool couldn’t get a shot at goal much closer than 16 meters. And Courtois was really good. But they’ve already won the title, so congratulations to Real Madrid.

@@bhupendrayt I never said it was a a 5-5-0. Benzema and Vinicius were always forward. I just said that the basic concept was defending and counter attacking, much more than they usually do. And the only thing I said is that it’s not something Ancelotti invented for this final and it’s not really brilliant.. Actually atletico does not defend with 10 players in most matches like they did against City.

The relative share of possession was almost 50% so Madrid cannot be accused of "parking the bus". It was very smart tactics from Ancelotti and the dropping of Kroos deep and the discipline of Vinicius to come back and help against Salah deserves a hell of a lot of credit. Casimero, Carvahal and the quiet Alaba especially were excellent. The overloads on the flanks (leaving the centre a little open) was really good thinking from Ancelotti. However, Real came up against a very, very tired Liverpool team, carrying injuries to two of their most important players! Overall, it was not a very impressive game from Madrid and for a super elite club to concede 3 serious chances like that in a final, when you have had essentially one week's more rest than the opponents is relatively poor. Liverpool defended very well all night and restricted Madrid to very few opportunities. Irrespective of what any of us think or what style of football we prefer, the modelling suggests that the scientific score was 2-1 to Liverpool.

I think everything changed when both Kroos ans Casimero sat deep in own half and Modric infront of them as free player mainly on the right to overwhelm Robertson with Valverde and Carvajal knowing that thiago don't have the legs to cover, Kroos sitting deep with his passing quality made nullified liverpool press and that ball need to Modric was available and it's naturally on the right hand side, I think Liverpool and Klopp did all their calculations and coverings on Vini Jr, his link with Benzema and on their right handside and forgot about a possible danger from both Valverde and Carvajal, Real need one moment of brilliance and it came from the left and got finished on Liverpool righ, so in other words Liverpool weakness were both Trent and Robertson, players that played well were Konate and Salah th elatter did everything offensively but Curtois was a monster

In such tipe of games when one of the teams dominant's with the ball (most of the time) and creating chances always being close to score a goal, only prevented by the goalkeeper (Liverpool) 😔⚽
This final was another case of a spicific scenario when one of the teams knows that their opponent will press high and attack more, so the defending team will try to cross or get around thre press and try to counter and score a goal even if their chances weren't too many ⚽🎯
Congratulations to Real Madrid for their 14 european cup! 🏆👏
They weren't the better team maybe, but they scored and won the trophy! 🤝

You missed a vital move in an otherwise good analysis. When the ball was being played to Valverde by Casemiro for the pass or shot (we don't know which) that resulted in the goal, Carvajal had already overtaken Valverde and was speeding down the touchline. In the absence of Robertson this left Van Dyke either having to either block a Carvajal cross or a Valverde cross. He did neither and the speed of the ball did the rest.
