1st Gen Honda Pilot - How Reliable Are They Really?

  • We all know of Japanese-designed cars' reputation for reliability. But how do they hold up in the real world? I take a look at a high-mileage 1st gen 2006 Honda Pilot, to see how the quality of the car has held up to constant strain and use as a commercial work vehicle.
Here are the things that Eric, the owner, has replaced and/or repaired on his Pilot that were apart from routine maintenance:
-right front CV axle (temporary repair)
    -starter solenoid
    -alternator
    -muffler leak/corrosion (temporary repair)
    -Faulty ignition system

I have an ‘06 pilot. And i love it to death. It is a workhorse, and I haul so much with it. Mine has been pretty beaten up by the previous owner, and when I received it, the oil was so old that it clogged the VTEC system and left me stranded, but I changed the oil and was good to go. So just regular routine maintenance and this car is a champ!

Man You're gonna be fine. You can easily get another 80 to 100 thousand miles on the clock with regular maintenance. They're awesome. I had 152 thousand miles when I bought it and I was up to 278 thousand miles and still ran smooth before I crashed. That's the only reason I don't have it anymore. Regular maintenance like oil changes, tune ups and belts will keep you on the road. I drove it everywhere everyday at least 80 miles a day because I live In a rural area. Absolutely a great vehicle.

I have a 2007 Honda Pilot EX-L Navigation 4WD in the steel blue, solar green. That bright aqua blue, green color you see on the first gen pilot. Lol. Mine has 204,000 miles and I got it with 196,000 miles. I have owned it for the last 7 to 8 months. My previous owner bought my pilot brand new in California off of the showroom floor brand new and he kept it all this time for 12-13 years and resigned the title of interest of the vehicle on October 23, 2019. And I bought my pilot off of marketplace for 3200$ and I think it was sent to auction but the car was in perfect shape. The engine, transmission, interior and exterior looked very clean, shiny, and pristine. Absolutely no tear in the leather seats, no wear and tear anywhere in that car. My alignment on my pilot is absolutely perfect, steering wheel is straight. Engine idles and runs very smooth and drives nice. My pilot is probably one of the most rarest ones out there. I have a back up camera. 4WD vtm-4. Heated mirrors. Garage home link. Cruise control. Sunroof. Leather steering wheel. Oil life percentage. Outside temperature. Tire pressure monitoring system. Navigation. Premium audio system with subwoofer. Cargo net. 3rd row seating. Heated front seats. Power driver seat. Rear automatic A/C with vents. Front automatic climate control. Voice recognition with voice activated navigation. Which the button is located on the left bottom side steering wheel behind the audio controls. My alighment is straight. Steering wheel is straight. Car drives and points forward. Has 4 brand new aftermarket tires and rims. Had my valves bent back straight and a new engine piston head installed on my engine after I had some little mishap of overrevving the engine in the manual mode (learned my lesson and don’t try that lol) 700$ engine rebuild. Had new brakes installed and put on for free. The tires and rims were 800$ together. And the car was 3200$ and plus my timing belt was just changed and so was the battery right before I bought it too. I love my pilot so much and I take good care of it and I also keep it very clean and very spotless inside and out and that’s coming from a 20 year old owner of it. Lol. I bought my pilot 12-09-2019.

Mines at 208k and has been maintained extremely well and runs like new and feels like it hasn’t lost a single horse power. I was looking for a first gen crv, this had the higher towing capacity and cargo room and to me just looks like a larger Crv. I own 2004 Honda Pilot with 315,000 miles now. No misfiring. Original engine still running strong now on a 4th timing belt and water pump. I love it. No it is not for sale. Changed transmission at 215,000 miles. I still have original alternator and starter in it. I tow a utility 6x12 double axle trailer all the time. Never left me stranded, very reliable. Just don’t be like Eric, fix the obvious. Any leaks or noises come up, fix them right away. Lol. That’s what I do with mine. Power steering leaked replaced the rostering rack $100. Transmission leaked one day, replaced it with a 90,000 mile used one and put all new seals and oil on it.egr passages at intake plugged up, cleaned them. Replaced spark plugs 2 or 3 times. Replaced cv axles twice already too. And also the breaks and tires every few years. Never any electrical issues. Radio works fine. 2004 is definitely better than 2003 models. It is not free to maintain this car but it is cheaper than replacing it! And it still drives like a dream even after those miles. Very impressive!

Besides the normal maintenance, brakes, tires etc, i have only had two unscheduled repairs. One was a fwd axle shaft due to a damaged cv joint caused by a torn boot that was not found untill too late. $100 and a hour of my time and it was fixed. The other problem was the notorious jammed ignition switch. Pulled out the switch and pulled out the damaged lock wafers and put back together. I can buy a newer car if she wants, but she says no everytime i ask.

Honda transmissions have their own filters and drain plugs and require fluid replacement every 30K or so. The EGR cover on the intake can get clogged without a periodic cleaning. Motor mounts and harmonic balancer also tend to be problem areas, but these are wear items. The tensioner pulley arms can crack.
I bought an 07 Pilot in late 2018 and it exhibited all those issues. Thankfully, I was able to do most of the work myself while incurring a minimum amount of shop labor costs. If you can find a clean one, they are worth sinking some money into.

John I would strongly recommend the VCM muzzler. Many earily Gen 1s and 2’s had premature engine wear due to the cylinder deactivation. 3 cylinders are used the majority of the time thus they wear out earily. This is similar to the old Cadillac V8-6-4 system they had in the mid 80’s. Unfortunately, GM used their customer base as Guinea Pigs for this experiment.
