Your valve compressor idea is one I toyed with. My hesitation on making it was because of how it complicated the device. Its simplicity is why it's so awesome! :) Plus there's already a simple valve spring compressor made for removing valve springs with the engine still in the car. It's a slow, multi-step, cumbersome tool to work with which only adds to the complexity of trying not to drop a valve while removing valve springs while a head is still bolted to the block. I settled on being satisfied with what a cool, fast, simple, bench tool that it is. Go on Amazon and buy yourself a big kitchen cutting board. Use that for a VSC base. ;)
Jafro watching my vids now? I must be friggin hollywood now :) But yeah, it works damn awesome. Personally I like to do any major work in the off season, in which case I'll have the head on the bench where it's easier to work on, better lighting and I think you have the same issue as me, being over 6' tall make it horrendous to work bent over on one of these cars in the bay. I actually used a piece of Lexan I had left over for the base but maybe for authenticity reasons, I should switch it over to a kitchen cutting board :)
I watched the whole video. I enjoyed every technical difficulty you experienced in making this because you now know firsthand how difficult it is to execute fine motor skills while you think both in the present and future, talk, clean, organize parts, manipulate tools, and perform extensive error-checking routines on all of your processes simultaneously while filming yourself AND also trying to keep it all in the shot. People don't realize how difficult it is to do all those things simultaneously and with any degree of efficiency. It's work! I'm just glad you got to experience that satisfying *POP* when the retainers easily separate under the weight of your own hand. It makes you feel mighty.
I really have to commend UA-camrs who put out content on a regular basis on their effort, it is a lot of work. Trying to mix that in with a full time job, family and getting anything accomplished is a chore. I can see why voice overs help a lot, trying to explain while doing, unscripted, is not an easy task. I'm also using my DSLR which has a limit of 20 minutes of continuous recording time, I have to keep that in the back of my mind at all times and then at the end of the day(s), have to find time to process all this data. I spent many hours picking through this footage, trying to keep all the pertinent info and trimming some of lesser importance in an effort to not make it excessively long. As you said, it's work, and the pay is pretty minimal! You have to like doing it or it just becomes a chore. I won't lie, that POP is what makes the whole thing worth it lol
What boost and power were you able to run on the evo 8 springs? How much do you think they're good for? Thanks for taking the time to make these videos!
Thanks for the video just been refreshing my evolution 3 head its never been touched that i know of and after i re seated my valves with past which didn't require much to tidy up i put the valve in and seat and retainer with locks to get measurements so i know what install height is and i got 1.539 and now im thinking shit i need to use shims to get the kiggly streets install height of 1.475. Whats your thoughts ? I was told should just be drop in replacement as my heads never been off from oem
Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to post this video. I have read a few writeups on how to do this as I am thinking I will do GSC S2 cams, springs, and retainers when my Evo hits 60k miles (currently at 47k), but a full video was very helpful. Quick question, have you ever done this with the head installed on the vehicle? I understand the risks of dropping the valves and/or keepers into the engine. I am thinking I will use an air compressor to fill the cylinder I am working on so that I don't drop a valve. I understand doing this with the head off the vehicle is ideal but it's my DD and I just really don't want to yank the head just yet.
hello, im going to do my drivers license soon. and as a first car i want to get an eclipse gs (dont worry i wont rice it) and i wanted to know from someone that knows eclipses and cars what is a good amount of money to spend on a non turbo (gs) and what to look out for. any tipps what you would have wanted to know before you bought an eclipse, things you usually realise after buying.
If you just want a daily driver and GS or RS is fine, if you want it for anything more, then it's a GST or GSX you want. The 420A non-turbo platform is very limited performance wise and it will just leave you disappointed if you want anything more than 150hp.
Raffa 1337 don't pay anymore than 1200 and that a super clean 420a, but if you ever try to mod it you will be disappointed they don't make a lot of power. A guy that leaves by me has one that is pushing 20 Psi and its built and my gst and gsx beat him and he has over 10,000 in the car. But it's your choice
Jason Drew yep i get what youre saying but i already have to pay 200€ in insurance for the non turbo model so that is already like a crappy apartment :D cant go turbo at the moment until im a little bit older. i want to pay like 4000€ for one are there any parts to watch out for that often break and is that enough for an eclipse?
Raffa 1337 I've seen a couple and even bought one with the clutch very bad and a rattle in the transmission something happen to the flywheel I'm not to sure but if you hear and rattle no good and if the clutch is bad no good and make sure the oil is not topped off or any additives in the oil to quiet tickings or knocking there's a lot man would have to take some one with you that knows a lot about cars

I haven't done it but I know plenty of people who have successfully done it.
good video ,keep em coming bro

Jayleen Cruz alright thx
may i know...how many pressure spring on stock 4g63?
It's around 68lbs when new, mind you the are old now with lots of miles, I'm sure the pressure has reduced.
what valve springs did u use?
Kiggly Steel streets
Is the same as the 4g64?
Not quite, the 64 is usually a SOHC head and not DOHC like the 63.
can you upload a full engine rebuild process? lol thats what im doing and trying to save the 1k price for labor
