I love your crash tests, except for the fire resistance. I don't really see a point to it because i usually avoid riding on the surface of the sun, or through fireballs. Maybe there is a better way to test heat resistance? Idk
hmmmm I have seen motorcycles burst into flames on impact. I think the point of it is to see if the gear is going to resist long enough for someone to come pull you out of the flames.
F13SC I could see that. but a motorcycle bursting in to flames will not burn as hot as a torch, and typically if you stick with a bike that impacts hard enough to burst into flames, heat resistance I'd the least of your worries imo. I get what you are saying though
Helmets are not built to be Flame proof. Flame is not heat resistance. That would be fire resistance. You can get very high heats with out flame and you can have low heats with flame. With a flame though you are adding a fuel to the mix and changes the situation entirely. Specially from a torch. As far as getting stuck under a flaming motorcycle after an accident, it is very very slim. You would have a better chance of getting stuck under the flaming car that hit you.
hymn1337 Not to mention the abrasion test, who cares if your helmet can survive 20 seconds or 35 seconds against a belt sander? Even a highway-speed slide wouldn't last longer than 5-10 seconds
Eliot Metherell yes but the grinder spinned with 19kph (about 11 mph). If you crash on the highway (i dont know what the speed limits are) with about 60-100 mph and you slide on your helmet its much ruffer than any sandpaper grinder. So indeed i think this test was very useful to show what impact the helmets can take.
Maybe you guys could rig up a sledgehammer (or similar) to swing freely from a set height for the chin bar test. That would give you the same force each time.
maybe have a better release system for when you drop the helmets to keep the drop height consistent as well as make sure your not adding any force down on the helmets that increase its falling speed
As ever a well put together video but I would be more interested in seeing some destructive testing for bike security items. Helmets have to comply to strict standards where bike locks and alarms dont.
Hey Ryan, ever think of doing a motorcycle vs non-motorcycle head to head? For example comparing an Icon Overlord to a basic denim/leather non-motorcycle jacket, or a CSA workboot vs a motorcycle boot? The idea being to highlight how much of a difference basic motorcycle gear can make when compared to regular clothes or work gear.
So the Shoei is 2dbs better at sound proofing, is fire resistant and the visor can withstand 2 more airsoft bullets...yet the Icon Variant did better in abrasion resistance and chin bar strength... yet the Shoei won the better build quality, yet has very minut beneficial traits compared to the Icon....where as the Icon helmet is actually better though for protecting your chin and sliding (abrasion) ... So the helmet that can take more actual practical abuse (Sorry but your helmet is never going to burst into flames or be shot at) lost. Lmfao.
Pebbles in the road hitting the visor. Motorcycling catching fire in an accident. They aren't just tests for fun, they have a logical real life counterpart. Obviously exaggerated, but so are all the tests.
The shot bit is to represent how it will handle against rocks. Land against one or just one that flew off the road. Cracked my old car winshield once by a random rock flying on the road
Yea but I don’t think you’ll have more than one pebble hit the exact same spot more than once and the pellet gun is design to puncture and is going over 500 km (you’d never measure a bullet or pellet or bb's speed using km but rather fps)
@@trapperb6412 True, but a pellet has no weight behind it, whereas launching face-first into a sharp rock, branch, metal pipe, etcetera might have slightly more oomph to compensate for the lack of speed.
...I have to say that love these tests - I laughed during the Sea World water test... I do hope you are NOT breathing any of the burning fumes - very toxic... Nicely Done!
Love this guys product reviews .. no agenda , no store to plug, not a sales pitch, good ol honest independent view... big Australian fan of this kanuk.. always sending links to the numbats around me who have not subscribed.. but ask questions.. Please , please, please do a 2021 shoe/boot review .. would love to see the diffrences between Road , casual vs touring vs race .. Oh how about a retro bike Xsr900, kawasaki z900rs, Royal Enfield, Trump etc
Having owned the Hornet X2 and now ride the Variant, allow me to retort. Yes, both helmets are very good... and maybe the Hornet X2 is a little "Better". However I found that I quickly hated the Hornet, for two reasons. 1, it felt like I was wearing a Top Hat... The helmet has in firearms terms, a lot of Height Over Bore. It just felt gigantic. 2. While the helmet had a great fit and felt good while wearing it... It felt like it was ripping my ears off my skull when I took it off. In fact, it caused me a great deal of pain. And it actually did cause some soft tissue damage to my left ear, that took almost a month to heal. This is the only helmet that's ever done that to me. So I sold it. I now ride the Variant Battlescar, which I think looks better, is just as comfortable - and actually fits my headshape better. And it doesn't rip my ears off... Even with a SENA 20S installed, it's still comfortable. Sure, it's less money, but it's a great helmet.
Why Ryan, I'd love to see the HJC CL17. It is the cheapest SNELL rated helmet we can buy out there for around $130 if you find the right deal. Great job with he videos! Smart move letting gravity make the tests more even compared to the baseball bat :)
Love Helmet vs Helmet idea. I recently got the Hornet X2 in all Black at 50% discount and after trying it out at highway speeds last Sunday I gotta say I'm very pleased with the Fit, Sound, and Comfort and Peripheral visions. Hope to meet up with the F9 crew at your next bike meet whenever-wherever that may be to see how it's faired till then.
I'd love to know how much the wind catches the sun-visors when looking over one's shoulder. Perhaps it's a difficult test to perform, but it's a biggie for me assessing ADV helmets, and hard to anticipate. A friend has an XD-4 and complains about the wind. Up until he said that I thought the XD-4 was the top of the heap. Thanks for producing the engaging content.
AGV AX-Evo 8 Dual Vs Bell MX-9 should be quite an interesting one at around a £240 AGV lid and a £150 bell lid. Both seem to have good features competitively in each side.
I'm not sure how well these tests really matter. But it's damn sure entertaining to watch. And kind makes me realize how theirs not much difference in overpriced helmets compared to your average level one.
perhaps we should test the Vents air flow inside the Gear as well, like a thermometer, a Heat fan; a way to see how well it could dispel heat and understand how Stuffy gear can get. like a warm damp rag and see how quickly it would Cool off with a fan blowing head on. just some ideas i've had @fortnine
Love your videos!! I know your comparing one helmet to another, but why not drop test onto concrete instead of a foam mat? Would make it more to real life.
I'd still go with the Icon at the end of the day. There were some pretty important parts that they did better in, such as the abrasion testing, and that's almost inexcusable for a helmet that costs nearly double the Icon to do worse on.
Interesting point, but if you ever slide with your helmet on the ground for more than 21 seconds let me know......actually if you can manage more than 5 then i'd still like to know
Hey Ryan, so you know I had my heart set on the Shoei as my next purchase. Quite surprised that soundproofing only came in at 2dB less than the icon, from your experience how are the aerodynamics at highway speeds of both, I hear the Hornet is amazing but not sure if it is in fact worth the extra $400.
Hey Adam! Aerodynamics are quite good on both helmets. I would say that the Shoei has better aero, but it's not a *huge* difference. Certainly not twice as good. Your extra $400 mainly goes into build quality and finish. The padding, face shield and vents all feel more "premium" on the Shoei. Some people care about that kind of thing, some don't. ~RyanF9
Ryan how could you destroy my helmet! Just kidding, I was actually interested to see if my helmet would show up on your reviews (Hornet just for clarity), and i'm surprised at the sound test. I wear earplugs for almost every ride and with them in I can comfortably listen to myself hum away on the highway, or listen to the radio on my headset! I ride a Versys 650 with an aftermarket windscreen and even at 100+ I get very little buffeting from the wind, I really like the peak design as it still functions as a regular peak, but without the kite like aerodynamics! Another excellent review!
Simple answer - the Shoei RF-1200 is a better helmet in every way. Quieter, more slippery and *way* lighter. Only reason to choose the Variant is if you like the looks. ~RyanF9
For some reason I only just got the notification on the reply sorry I was riding along a suburban road (On a mint NSR-250 btw) at approx 80km/h and a commodore (large sedan) rapidly pulled out about 10-20m in front of me. Hey Ryan! Great work as always. I d like to ask what about the shell sizes of the Icon Variant Helmet? Never seen one or had the chance to wear. Shell is same size for Small/medium/large etc/etc ? Pls respond :)
You should test fogging for helmets and sweat levels for jackets, idk exactly how you could do that but i think it's relevant, safest x is tbe one you'll actually wear and all

Think you should put the helmets, boots and jackets in their own category as well as all together. Other wise the more equipment you test the more cluster the list will be.
If only they weren't so expensive, I'd probably have a couple Shoeis. Having said that, it seems to me like while the Hornet won, the Icon didn't fare too badly itself. My personal take on this comparison is both are excellent and very safe helmets to have. That's just me.
Wait a minute, is that your old Variant that's in the back of the shot in so many videos? How old is it? In theory the age of the helmet could have skewed some of the impact results due to the foam degrading over time.
I'm Icon all day every day. But, the only thing that worries me is the seal on the faster. I'm getting rid of my last helmet SPECIFICALLY because it wouldn't seat properly and gave constant wind.
Yeah. You can tell it's been winter in Montreal. Although props to you guys for doing not only the crash test stuff, but also continuing to do the "best gear" series ... even AFTER the big Christmas push. Nice to see those continue in what must be a slow period.
Hahaha I guess you could call it that. We were Canada's Motorcycle for 7 years I think, then just changed our name to FortNine recently. Pretty long pilot ;) The thing is that Canada's Motorcycle only ever focused on the e-Commerce side of things. Our new love for video came around after the FortNine switch. Cheers! ~RyanF9
Not many people can afford shoei helmets so i mean the icon did pretty good by my standards. Just my opinion though. Also keep in mind the icon helmet was used so its got a few weak points from being used.
Ouch, just hurts to watch.......but interesting....but hurts to watch........I get all of the tests except the fire test. I would actually call these results pretty close based upon the dollar for dollar comparison as well.
I love your crash tests, except for the fire resistance. I don't really see a point to it because i usually avoid riding on the surface of the sun, or through fireballs. Maybe there is a better way to test heat resistance? Idk

This is an interesting showdown and I'm impressed with how well the Icon Variant stood against the $800 Shoei even though it didn't win.
WTS: 2 Helmets, barely used, dropped on the ground on accident. Just need new shields are good for another 50K miles.
Nope. One drop and any helmet is done.
I very much enjoy watching you do the "Canadian Shuffle" in the Seaworld segment.
Almost as good as the "dueling Ryans" in the drop test portion.
I like the video but I think its worth noting for how much money you could save with Icon it did pretty well.
yes. half the price for 2 fail test. unless you do instant self combustion.
As ever a well put together video but I would be more interested in seeing some destructive testing for bike security items. Helmets have to comply to strict standards where bike locks and alarms dont.

Hey Mathieu - yep! We have a riding jeans vs. regular jeans video coming up in a few weeks. ~RyanF9
But is it worth double?
debrisbit I dislike Icon but would still say no ; Shoei is not worth double.
I agree. I would still buy the variant
That’s what I’m saying. For the cost it’s bots worth it.
i would love to see things like ski helmets tested, as i am a skier and motorcyclist.
keep up the good content!!!!!
Damn even 7 years ago you were pumping out amazing content. No wonder the channel took off
Love this series. You're tests while informative are always hilarious and entertaining.
Always give me SNELL rated helmets
So the Shoei is 2dbs better at sound proofing, is fire resistant and the visor can withstand 2 more airsoft bullets...yet the Icon Variant did better in abrasion resistance and chin bar strength... yet the Shoei won the better build quality, yet has very minut beneficial traits compared to the Icon....where as the Icon helmet is actually better though for protecting your chin and sliding (abrasion) ...

Well, they judge the winner according to their tests. However, we are all free to draw our own conclusions. And in the real world, the Icon wins.

You left out the most important feature of all. Appearance! The Variant stomps the Shoei !!! I'm buying another Variant!
Loved the video.
...I have to say that love these tests - I laughed during the Sea World water test... I do hope you are NOT breathing any of the burning fumes - very toxic... Nicely Done!
Really excellent job with all the editing. A ton of work and it shows in a smooth interesting presentation. Cheers guys.
still going with icon
lawn freak Yep, you can buy two icons or one shoei.
Icon isnt fun. Sucks to ride with. Wind will make you hate it.

Thanks for the test, I just bought a Shoei Hornet X2... The fire test was scary to watch, I sure hope that's never a reality!!!!
Would be an interesting test to compare a Schuberth to a Shoei. Love your channel.
I crashed in a Shoei Hornet X2 and didn't die. The peek was ripped off but that's probably a good thing.... I plan on getting another one soon.

Holy shit, So keen to see the Striker vest video. I'm debating getting one of them cause its so hot here in Australia, but they dont look too safe

I love these tests, they are both entertaining and informative (to some degree :p) keep it up!
how does it feel to destroy your old helmet Ryan?
mist have hurt 😓
will you do a video on your new helmet ? :)
Haha nah... I'm not the sentimental type. Also I have a Klim Krios on my desk to catch my tears. Should feature in plenty 'o videos :) ~RyanF9
I hope you didn't spend Klim Dollars:

Your videos and test are great but, can you improve your lights? I think they will have better quality with more luminosity. Thanks anyway!
Two two only helmets I'm interested in. Nice!

I don't even care who wins, I just like seeing you beat the crap out of things lol
HOW DO YOU ONLY HAVE 85K SUBSCRIBERS
Hey Ryan, so you know I had my heart set on the Shoei as my next purchase. Quite surprised that soundproofing only came in at 2dB less than the icon, from your experience how are the aerodynamics at highway speeds of both, I hear the Hornet is amazing but not sure if it is in fact worth the extra $400.

I ride a Versys 650 with an aftermarket windscreen and even at 100+ I get very little buffeting from the wind, I really like the peak design as it still functions as a regular peak, but without the kite like aerodynamics!
Another excellent review!
Im debating Icon Variant vs Shoei RF1200. Whats the pros and cons to each? Thoughts Ryan? Thanks and keep up the good work.
Simple answer - the Shoei RF-1200 is a better helmet in every way. Quieter, more slippery and *way* lighter. Only reason to choose the Variant is if you like the looks. ~RyanF9
A shoei saved my life. I'm not saying I wouldn't wear anything else, but I have a pretty good reason to trust their products.
James Healy what happened? And what other kind of gear were you wearing it weren't wearing and did it stand up?
For some reason I only just got the notification on the reply sorry
I was riding along a suburban road (On a mint NSR-250 btw) at approx 80km/h and a commodore (large sedan) rapidly pulled out about 10-20m in front of me. I had nowhere to go and not enough time to slow down significantly. I was wearing dainese gloves, a dririder jacket and draggins with alpinestars boots. Apparently I bounced up onto the boot lid and then sorta just slid off onto the road at a standstill, so I had no meaningful skin injury - but probably wouldn't have even if I'd been starkers. I still have the helmet, it has some significant paint damage from the impact and a crack running roughly up the middle above the visor that is hard to see, but you can feel the helmet flex in your hands. Some of the foam inside remains noticeably compressed.
As far as injuries, I broke three metacarpals in my right hand and sustained a complex open book pelvic fracture from, essentially, being "split" by the impact with the tank. Got golden staph in hospital and ended up spending a month in isolation, then another two months in rehab. 14 weeks in hospital and they took the brace off and let me out. I can walk fine (if a little waddly these days) but I still get bad hip pain sometimes. Still ride, albeit not as often as I used to. As I said, I keep the helmet to remind myself that I took a massive head impact and got away without any lasting brain injury, and that life is too short to wear shit protective equipment.
PS if you have testicles I apologise for making you read that, and yes, it was worse than you're imagining. I sometimes tell people that I got punched in the groin by a car doing 70km/h. ;D
I just realized this is your (Ryan) icon variant that you used to use in motovlogs! RIP white variant :(
Hey Ryan! Great work as always. I d like to ask what about the shell sizes of the Icon Variant Helmet? Never seen one or had the chance to wear. Shell is same size for Small/medium/large etc/etc ? Pls respond :)
Love your video reviews, keep it up!
You should test fogging for helmets and sweat levels for jackets, idk exactly how you could do that but i think it's relevant, safest x is tbe one you'll actually wear and all
Can you start testing face shields for fog resistance and scratch resistance. I am a year round rider in B.C. and the riding season is long, but wet. I am currently using HJC cl17 helmet because it doesn't,t fog or ice and is cheap. Thanks for the great helmet tests.
Any chance for a Schuberth modular? Would make me happy to know the slightly ridiculous price adds some safety, not just noise reduction
I'm assuming you are using a dBSPL scale. If that's the case, then the icon is actually not that much louder than the shoei, because the human ear can really only detect a change in volume by 3 dBSPL
Besides very enjoyable to watch, you've provided some pretty valuable information.
+FortNine how about a pressure test from the side in future helmet tests? how much weight until the shell loses integrity?
So I got I. An argument with a friend about the grab on the icon variant I know there will be some but he’s trying to say the visor is going to fly off, I know head checks might be a little tricky, but is there anyway you could SAFELY do a speed test on the visors
I would be really interested in an arai test since the shell is hard which should be awesome at the piercing test but as more research as i have done to be not really good at impact damping
Think you should put the helmets, boots and jackets in their own category as well as all together. Other wise the more equipment you test the more cluster the list will be.
you should check out the Ruroc Atlas sport it is supposed to be really durable with an ece and dot certificatation
You should do the same thing with the carbon fibre icon variant.
If only they weren't so expensive, I'd probably have a couple Shoeis. Having said that, it seems to me like while the Hornet won, the Icon didn't fare too badly itself. My personal take on this comparison is both are excellent and very safe helmets to have. That's just me.
curious to see the "cheap top of the line" RPHA 11 from HJC review and crash test
Love the videos..... keep'em coming !!!
Wait a minute, is that your old Variant that's in the back of the shot in so many videos? How old is it? In theory the age of the helmet could have skewed some of the impact results due to the foam degrading over time.
So Ryan are you sticking with the Icon or going Shoei for your own helmet?
Please test an Arai helmet. I'm looking at a Quantum X to be the best/safest fit for my round head, but $800 is a hard pill to swallow.
The Icon looks amazing!
I'm Icon all day every day.
But, the only thing that worries me is the seal on the faster.
I'm getting rid of my last helmet SPECIFICALLY because it wouldn't seat properly and gave constant wind.
Hey Ryan! can you do a KYT sometimes? They're one of the cheapest "motogp" helmet brand so I'm really curious about the quality.
I liked this series why did you stop?
i like these videos, but i want to see some outdoor scenes too. winter?
Winter. ~RF9
Yeah. You can tell it's been winter in Montreal. Although props to you guys for doing not only the crash test stuff, but also continuing to do the "best gear" series ... even AFTER the big Christmas push. Nice to see those continue in what must be a slow period.
wait why are't on the full list at the how many 9's have each???
They will be! We just didn't show the full leaderboard in this video since it's more of a "versus" theme. ~RyanF9
Ryan, was Canada's motorcycle a pilot of fortnine??
Hahaha I guess you could call it that. We were Canada's Motorcycle for 7 years I think, then just changed our name to FortNine recently. Pretty long pilot ;) The thing is that Canada's Motorcycle only ever focused on the e-Commerce side of things. Our new love for video came around after the FortNine switch. Cheers! ~RyanF9

Not quite fair in the abrasion resistance test, unless you changed the sand paper before testing the icon..
Thats a nice gold swing brother.
I thought anything protruding from the shell (like vents or peak) were intended to break away.
which is the best helmet then 2017
Not many people can afford shoei helmets so i mean the icon did pretty good by my standards. Just my opinion though. Also keep in mind the icon helmet was used so its got a few weak points from being used.
Would love to see what your tests do to a aliexpress sub 100 bucks helmet
That's coming... just waiting for our bargain beauty to arrive from China. ~RyanF9
FortNine would it happen to be a THH brand helmet?
How about the highly popular LS2s
I'd like to see these two vs each other now
Ouch, just hurts to watch.......but interesting....but hurts to watch........I get all of the tests except the fire test. I would actually call these results pretty close based upon the dollar for dollar comparison as well.
Chances of a Bell bullitt getting tested someday?
As much as I'd love to destroy the dreadful Bullitt, I haven't got an un-sellable one kicking around. ~RyanF9
So in what road accident is someone pointing a bunsen burner to my visor for 10 seconds?
I'd sill go with the variant
LOL :) The scientist in you... Who Knew :)
You should test an icon Airflite
chin bar strength and abreasion resistance are more important to me.... but mostly im an icon fanboi cause they just look so fukken cool ;)
Yeah but which one is the best to stick a gopro and a mic to it ? lol
Whats the point of fire resistence when your not driving through fire.
It would be awesome for you guys to do a riding jeans show down on Crash Test!
It shall be. ~RF9
Ryan.....crash test a klim badlands..I know you hate how much it costs...
Mm yeah... that would be satisfying. ~RyanF9
What does he so with all the left over helmets?
What about the weight differences
Hey Ryan can u crash test the gmax gm11d dual sport helmet pls
Will you ever test the shoei gt air?
Can you please do a review on a variant
you where way lower on the club swing for the icon.
FOR SALE: Shoei Hornet X2, open box, customer return
yoooo do more videoooos kind like thiiiis bro. that's good
can you do the helite airbag and test it?
For almost a 400 buck difference I’d just get the icon, the helmets almost scored exactly the same in all the test
ryan for president
Could you do a test on the icon airframe pro please
