Hi Cody, sorry to see the damage! If it's just the weld seam that separated after being hit with the forks, we can send out a plastic welding repair kit that can be used and then returned to us. We'd include instructions on how to prep and repair the seam. Unfortunately, epoxies and glues don't work on this material. If you decide to get a smaller tank just let us know. The pump and plumbing can be swapped out pretty easily.

    Remove paint
    Degrease b 4 (& after sanding)
    Roughen surface texture w/30-40 grit
    Solvent degrease again
De-energize surface potential with flash-flame polish, taking care not to melt.

Propane torch and a metal paint scraper is the best technique I’ve found for welding plastic. I’ve used in on canoes and kayaks with great success. If it’s HDPE it’s even easier. I just cut strips of the same plastic to fit cracks or splits and lay them out and use the torch to heat the scraper and use it for molding. You can even layer in some steel mesh and use the paint scraper to melt it into the surrounding plastic before applying the filler.

According to the qtec website the tank is polypropylene and "copolomer" so I would assume its made from a proprietary 11 herbs and spices secret blend of plastic, and it would appear that without knowing exactly what plastic it is, it would not be safe to guess at what kind of plastic you're welding. Plastic welding absolutley can be done, but if it's life and death I wouldn't risk it as some plastic doesn't mix when welded. Polypropelene is also one of the least tolerable of welded plastics when it comes to mixing. It doesn't have to be a complete waste though. You could use the tank for other non potable non emegency uses. Love the videos, thanks Cody and family, its definitely a bright spot in my day to know someone else is out here giving the good fight doing the best they can, with what they have, where they are at.

As to fix the tank it is easy. Needed items is an ..
    Air compressor w/ blowgun
    Filler material
    Heat source
Tools to mold or press with
Best material to use is old gas can plastic. One its red, two it's hard enough and third it's made to be high temp.
Heat sources can be anything match to a torch. You decide how long you wasnt to be there.
Clean the plastic off with denatured alcohol then warm it to a lite gloss stage. Heat the filler material then to this stage and the reapply the heat to both at the same time and press filler into with the blowgun going pressurizing the tank and cooling off the material. If it cools to fast then reapply heat to gloss stage. This where it just get glassy look. Then you can mold add or take material at this point. If you heat to the liquid point you will make a puddle. Plastic will turn into a gas so do not heat to long.
I use a lighter for small projects and a torch for larger projects like this but being small ad it is a pen torch or lighter will work just fine.

One option to repair that tank would be to go to a marine outlet and get a fiberglass resin compound for boat repairs. Some of the compounds you can get are permanent solution and some are just to get you by until it can be moored for further repair. It is fairly cheap, and for what you are applying it to may be your best bet outside of taking it to a plastics shop for resealing.

I have repaired several plastic rescue boats with a hot air gun and plastic strips. Most ice cream containers are made of a plastic mix which would melt the same as the tank. Try in an area near the top first. And see if you can get it to stick together. If successful then move to the critical area. After all the tank is pretty useless as it is. Get a good melt going and then feed the repair plastic in. Do several layers to build up the strength.

Plastic only needs heat in the correct area to reform it. Likely 180°C to 295°C (°C to °F is °C * 1.8 + 32). Apply the correct amount of heat to the exact area then press it together with preheated steel to force it together and leave it in place until both cool.

In Australia, we can use a liquid rubber sealant. You paint it on & let it dry between coats. We use it to seal water tanks that need sealing or have developed a crack. Great product.
Your other option might be to fibre glass the seem (even overlap the edges a little).

Little tip for keeping heat out of your house, put shades on the outside of your house for the summer heat. Shades on the inside of your house will heat up in the sun bringing radiant heat into your house, great for winter. The grip handle split on one of my expensive 3 gal plastic gas cans. I successfully fixed the leak with that UV activated adhesive but I don't know if it's available in larger quantities. I then reinforced the fix with weld/wrap tape but that only works on small diameter objects where you can wrap around tightly.

well depending on the plastic and if you have a wood clamp that can span the tank in what ever dimension.
there is pvc or cpvc glues that melt the pvc together. mek Methyl Ethyl Ketone for ABS, Polycarbonate, Acrylic. or model glue gel (testors) that contains a chemical, such as Toluene for soft plastics like models.
the Ideal being the same kind of plastic as the tank in 1/8" sheet piece or pieces to cover the hole/holes , apply the glue liberally and clamp the sheet to the tank and the glue will melt/weld the plastics together. you can test the glue/solvent on a sheet that is the same as the tank's to see if it melts it before doing the job.

Cody, If it is the right type of plastic it can be plastic welded. It's basically a soldering iron and small strips of plastic used to fill, patch and join plastics. That seam would be easy to weld if it's the right type of plastic. Best way to find out is order the kit and give it a try. There not expensive at all.

You could always put the fire setup on a small trailer to tow behind the pioneer. This way you wouldn't have to downsize the tank to fit. Keep it on a pallet so you can still transfer to a pickup truck or wherever.

I really enjoy your videos. Your comment about walking a mile for tools everyday. Truggered a memory for me that you might find useful. My grandfather farmed 2000 acres in Missouri from 1910 to the 1980's. At some point in the 50's he started welding a small metal toolbox to each of his tractors where he kept a set of the most frequently used tools and sockets. He also kept small parts like spare cotter pins and a couple of bolts and nuts. Later he started welding a small metal parts box with a locking lid to each of his most used implements/attachments and store spare pins, hose clamps, seals etc. with each attachment. By the time I was old enough to help, he had the system down and rarely had to return to the barn during the day for anything less than a catastrophic failure. Hope it helps or sparks an idea of your own.

It may be repairable depending on the type of polymer (plastic). Some polymers can be repaired with sonic welding. There are ultrasonic welders, too. You could use a two component cure system that is either epoxy or urethane. These may have to be a composite patch similar to fiberglass. Last resort is photo curable polymer.

You should be able to rough that area up and use some fiberglass to seal that up permanently. Don't get the precut/mixed, use fiberglass strips with the resin. Make sure to rough up the areas you are applying it to. Good luck with the new place. Praying for you that everything goes well.

  • @kevinhaley8625

If you can get into the damaged area inside the tank, some fiberglass and resin will seal it and then add a patch outside as well. If done outside the water weight may lift the fiberglass patch leaving you back at square one.

Hey Cody, a plastic welder is going to be your best bet at fixing that problem. It’s important that you know what plastic your tank is made out of. That will allow you to get the correct rod. You might need a few pieces of scrap plastic to practice but it’s not hard to pick up. I used to work in a shop where we did it.

If it is hdpe plastic, (Kayak boat type plastic), I "welded" several seams back together on my 1550 gallon water tank. I cut milk jugs into 1x4 strips torched a large meta; spoon and melted it onto the split seams...1550 gallons of water no leaks in 3 years. You could use laundery detergent bottles that are the same color red. But pratice a bit first. There are Hot iron welders for just this thing.

Remember that applying the product X it in the inside of the tank will be the best option most of the time, since the pressure from the water will help pressure seal it.
A rubbery material might be best as a sealant, so that it is able to flex with the movement and vibration, and not get unglued.
There are many posibilities, but I would start by testing somewhere in the inside (clean and dry) to see how it adheres.
100% silicone normally works great, but some times depending on the material, it will peal off.
Also, a piece of rubber glued with contact sement in the inside could work fantastic.

If you can find out the grade of plastic they used on the fire tank you should be able to get a piece and "melt" it in to repair the damaged weld.
Alternatively, could you flip the tank upside down, blanking off the existing orifices and recreating them on the bottom? That way the damage would be right at the top of the tank instead of the bottom, so you could probably seal it up with silicone as there be no pressure behind it

My dad knows how to do plastic repair. He used to fix a bunch of things for us and he would use a fine steel mesh, plastic fill, and a couple little tools to smooth it. He would heat the old and new plastic and melt the mesh into it for strength. Than would fill the spot with melted plastic.

I would try it! Sorry for the bad English - greetings from Germany 😉
