Released in 1967 “The Dirty Dozen” is not only your everyday war movie but one that got stuck with audiences until today. Featuring an all-star cast including Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Telly Savallas, George Kennedy and many, many more, this movie is (with exception of the war-factor) pure fun to watch. Why? Because you don’t see actors having so much fun by doing their parts that often!
To round it up, the beloved Frank De Vol provided a fun score for this fun movie. Known from various Doris Day movies (with their distinct De Vol music) or “Flight Of The Phoenix” the composer’s music is always moving, quoting several known tunes and being Looney Tune’esque here and there. Not only did the actors had their fun, obviously composer De Vol as well, who, besides his music career served as an actor and a comedian as well, which was a rather unique way of living for the 60’s. So now, let’s enjoy his funny score!

Frank DeVol was the composer of choice for director Robert Aldrich, and their work together resulted in some terrific soundtracks - including his famous silky lullaby theme for HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE - but my favorite DeVol score is his atypical, powerful orchestral music for ULZANA'S RAID, which was finally released on a superb CD from Intrada.

Can never say in the style like actor, Donald Sutherland said playing as a "fake general" in reviewing an army camp's troops: " Never heard of it." The looks from Lee Marvin from that remark is...beautiful.
Yes, this 1967 movie score is enjoyable with the scenes. The right composer for a somewhat fun script that saw several of the "Dozen" wiped out by the German Nazis at the big mansion. How many of the "Dozen" including the commanders and Lee Marvin are around? Maybe a few, though Marvin died, I think, in the 1980's.
I have a pre-recorded cassette of the complete score I bought in the 1980's. The tape is jittery near the end and I have yet to replace the plastic housing with one of my many recycled tapes which, I know how to do that.

I'm looking for the March the band starts to play several times but stops because the so-called "general" is not really arriving yet.
