Finally someone testing the handling noise on the MKE 400! I bought the MKE 200 a week ago and the handling noise made me think twice about also getting the MKE 400. This is the first review of many that points out this . This was not an issue with the Rode VideoMicro and I did not think about it before I got the MKE 200. Now I will get the MKE 400 as it dont have that issue. THANK YOU!
This video was more confusing than a Fellini flick. Squirrel tails hanging from the top right, purple trees, haunting sound...GENIUS!!! They will start studying you in film school.
There's a cultural difference between Rode and Sennheiser. The clarity of the MKE 400 compliments most languages where the bass bias of Rode seems very targeted at English speakers which sound throaty. Easily accomplished on the Sennheiser by cutting highs in post and boosting low mids a bit, while the reverse of boosting highs on the Rode would also boost preamp noise. Sennheiser is definitely a winner in my opinion, although the lack of handling noise reduction on the MKE 200 is a fail.
I bought the 200. The hand noise is tolerable (but sucks) however the behind camera performance is great for a shotgun - beats that editing mess with that deity
Same. I'm excited to try the 200 out. I also hate the suspension system on mics. Functional, but obnoxious looking. Sennheiser puts theirs in the blimp of the mic.
Saw an article about Ontario issuing stay at home that had a picture of "A pedestrian walks across Wellington Street West in Toronto on Thursday, March 25, 2021." To my disappointment it wasnt a picture of CC crossing the street/near death experience whilst vlogging it.
The MKE 400 for the studio, for sure. But... Amazingly, the Sony X3000 still has the best mics for un-tethered outdoor sound. Puts Sennheiser to shame. (I just went back to one of my own videos to test and.., holy crap it's good! -Doesn't reject background noise, but it's so clear and good at picking up voice at Vlogging distance, it doesn't matter.) Sony made a deal with the devil for that one. -Probably in exchange for promising to never make another good action cam again. If only a princess would kiss Sony and release them from the curse...
The three-hour warning for power is a strong feature in my opinion, partnered with the excellent performance. I appreciate the review and the excellent humor! Going with the 400, let's see how that works out. THANK YOU!
I love both Rode and Sennheiser, I have and use both Rode and Senny, the wireless go 1 and 2, the videomicro, and NT1-A, as well as the MKH 416 and ME66/K6 and they all sound really great... BUT, each one has their strengths and weaknesses. I found the VideoMicro sounded better overall than the MKE200, but the MKE400 sounded noticeably better than the other 2, but still that audio compression that your phone does to it hurts the soul. Video is relatively subjective, you can get away with a lot, but audio isn't, your audio must always be as good as you can possibly get it, you may not feel it's quite as important but your viewers definitely notice, good comparison tho, enjoyed the video.
I'm looking for a new mic so this was good. The Rode was best outdoors. Both Sennheisers had sibilance, i.e. hissy s-sounds. I'd watch out for that because it fatigues your hearing.
Being using the MKE 200 for months. Can't say enough good things about it. I did a comprehensive demonstration about the mke200 against the media mod in a whole bunch of different settings, walking, cycling and in the car.
If it helps, as a sound engineer, I preferred the Rode Videomicro on-camera (outdoors) sound and the Sennheiser 400 in your office. The Comica and Sennheiser lavs were quite similar, quality wise, but the Comica just edged it a bit with a slight top end boost to it. I am SOOOO enjoying your videos dear sir. They are making me chuckle and feel good through these crazy lockdown times in the UK. You're going to have to introduce me to who this "Tony" character is though. Maybe there are several folk called Tony as well?? (you say "Tony 2") sometimes. All a bit blurry without putting a face to the name... ( ;) ) Thanks for all you're doing :)
“Toneh” is Tony Northrup, the UA-cam camera/lens reviewer who seems obsessed with “bokeh”, out of focus blur. He had recently shot a video at f1.2... So Kasey made a video about Tony’s search and need for Toneh. K always parodies and lambasts everyone, and everyone’s values, himself included.
The Comica CVM-VM10 is a Rode Video Micro clone (no battery, small compact microphone) but it's MUCH louder, like it's stuck on +10db... so you can turn down the in camera volume (thus less noise)
Thx for checking the handling noise. I'm sad that MKE200 got that noise. Cause that's the only bad thing about my Movo VXR10 mic. While I switch hands or move camera too much there is this annoying rumbling noise :(.
Thanks for the video. Do you think it's better to set the camera body to -12db and +20 on the MKE400 or the camera body at +0 and the leave the MKE400 in the middle.
I used the EDUTIGE ETM-001 to vlog on the street. I like it because sometimes I interview random people and it picks up with no problem. But the mic is really sensitive. I used with the GoPro 8
Thanks for this test. I like your style, however, you have plenty of great comments that add life to your video, still it requires lost of concentration from the viewer, at least for me. I was a bit lost and at the end, I'm not sure which mic is best for my usage. On a lighter note, I know it's trivial but it seems that the best profile is the right side for you. You are very different depending on the angle you choose (right or left). Fascinating.
Better can be relative sometimes, this was a good video. I wonder how the Senns do indoors without all the noise getting rejected. They did a very good job at handling it for sure.
This new MKE400 seems to be fantastic. I love the way it sounds in most reviews I have seen, including yours. I am somewhat tempted. I have the MKE600, it is a fantastic microphone, but a bit too conspicuous on top of a cellphone :) :) In your video the Rode sounded great as well. The MKE200 sounds like a cheap microphone, which it clearly isn't...
one of the things my planned channel will do is audio lessons and tips and secrets episodes. I could do very detailed episodes on several topics you touched on. I am very impressed that you could run +20dB off the mic without hiss because that's pretty much a no-no in audio. You really never want to do that if possible. the mk400 definitely sounded better in my opinion even though it has the higher low-end roll off of 50Hz (mk200 is 40Hz) the mk400 sounded warmer and better to me. The mk400 also has a higher SPL capability which means you can put it in a louder environment. the low pass filter will not filter out back-ground noise. In your case I would probably never use it. Low pass is maybe if you are doing a VOICE interview in an area where maybe there is a lot of "bass" from music and you want to cut out the bass before it ever gets to the pre-amp (will make your voice pick up cleaner). you also touched on the super-cardioid pattern. That has to do with the "directivity" of the audio pickup. SUPER-CARDIOID means the microphone is just as "directional" direction as a cardioid is facing forward but the difference is that the super cardioid picks up a close range space from the rear. both the 200 and 400 are "super cardioid". if you want something that is "much" more directional, then you want a shot-gun mic because that sucker will pickup what is dead center ahead but not much to the sides (in particular) left or right of center screen on your camera.. I emailed your vegetable police my email starts with "burf". you are more than welcome to ask me audio questions. I love your channel so I will definitely reply. you may know way more about audio than you lead on in this video. if your preamps are hissing then I would not crank up the gain on the camera-- I would TRY not to crank the mics either-- never use low pass. but in post you can add a "gain" plugin on your video editing software and you can boost the signal there. I have some very significant tricks for mixing audio from cameras ALSO--> one thing if you want to master your camera audio, I could take an audio sample from you put it into my studio and I will mix it perfectly to analyze what is needed to get perfect sound from whatever mic it is you are using.. THEN I can send back to you the tweaks I did that way you can make some audio presets for your camera audio tracks that you just cut-n-paste and BAM! you got epic audio every time. that said, in my email I recommended some other sennheiser mics for you.. they are heavier so I can see if you don't like my choice especially for vlogging but if you had to choose between these two, 400 all the way. I could EQ that and give you some compressor settings that really sweaten that up while maintaining natural sound and not sounding like you have an effect on there.
@RAILWAY FILMS You wrote: "Low pass is maybe if you are doing a VOICE interview in an area where maybe there is a lot of bass from music and you want to cut out the bass before it ever gets to the pre-amp (will make your voice pick up cleaner)." NO! That's a high pass filter (or low cut filter). The high pass filter is normally used to reduce wind noise. It may also remove some of your handling noise but proper vibration isolation is better. Vibration isolation will also help against focus noise and zoom noise from the camera. Low pass filters are used for removing high frequency sounds to avoid aliasing. You cannot recover from aliasing in post. Aliasing corrupts your audio signal in the entire frequency range. Your microphone will give some inbuilt low pass filtering but often only -10 dB at 20 kHz. You can always do high pass filtering in post - only limited by your dynamic range.
@@cameraconspiracies Woah, perfect! Thanks Kasey! I tried looking it up but none of them had that vital stylish flash of red, so big thanks for these links!!
Could you not also go the Senni Lav with the DJI Osmo and the wireless kit? I have tried with the Rode Lav and it worked quite well, but I am now super curious about the Senheiser cutting out the BG noise. As at major events where its better to be more incognito with a smaller cam and a 'hidden' mic setup that combo would be awesome.
I'm psyched to get my CC t-shirt. You're my favorite thing on the internet! Sorry to be that guy, but I just wanted to correct you since you said it so many times... it's a 'high-pass' filter, not a 'low-pass' filter, also called a 'low-cut' filter, which I'm sure you meant when you said 'low-pass'. Low-pass cuts the highs.
Hi mate, was wondering if you could clarify whether or not you can record audio EMI-free when you are at home and your camera is plugged into the wall adapter? My Rode VideoMic Pro works perfectly when recording with cameras powered by battery, BUT, when recording when the cameras are powered by their AC wall adapters the audio always picks up an EMI buzz in the BG. Really frustrating! Cheers, mate, for any light shed on this.
I just receive the make 400. On G9, with mic @ +db and camera @ +6db, I can barely get sound. Am I doing something wrong? Problem with mke400? Videomicro works great. NEVERMIND....pilot error....used wrong cable...
Hi, thanks to share your interesting video. I have never used a microphone for my Lumix GH5, also because it has a good mic. incorporated. Please let me understand, this is not a criticism. If you are vloging, to shoot only a few minutes where the microphone is actually useful in a working day, but unfortunately you have to leave it on the camera all the time causing you only some annoyance. My question: how useful do you see it to those who do not do any interviews, etc. etc.? Thanks for your thought.
Nice review. Just a small point for ya - it's a high pass filter or low cut filter. Think about what frequencies are being allowed to 'pass' or are being 'cut'. You're welcome.
Casey, that cheap 3.5 Jack to USB C adapter you're using might seriously impact the audio quality. Did you try other adapters? I'm thinking to buy a Sharkoon Mobile DAC or Sharkoon DAC PD adapter. Could you test those? Lol
I am interested in buying sen 200 Can it capture bird noise from a certain distance, like 15 feet to 50 feet. I mean the noise that I can hear from a distance. Or Rode video micro can? Please help me.
I watched several videos. Røde, Sennheiser, Deity D4 mini. In the end, the Røde Videomicro sounds better than most, is great at eliminating background noise, best price/performance. Only the Sennheiser MKE 400 sounds better and has some extra features. But it costs 3 to 4 times as much. The MKE 200 sounds very thin and sensitive to some handling noise. The Deity D4 mini is good, but it allows more background noise than the Røde and costs almost the same. Too bad, as the form factor of the MKE 200 makes it very portable and discreet. If the MKE 400 price was just twice as the Røde Videomicro, I'd probably upgrade.
Can you Test some edutige Microphones? They have some little tiny ones. I bought one and it works well but it's the only one I've ever had so I have nothing to compare it to
The reason it doesn't work on your phone is because if you connect it via USB c, the audio isn't going into the dac that is in your phone. Signal only goes to the dac through audio jacks. If your phone doesn't have audio jacks, you may need an external dac
I'm thinking of buying a cheap knockoff of the Rode Videomicro Ultracompact, because my a6400 doesn't pick up the sounds of the birds I am shooting. I'm hoping that this way, the depth to which I fall down the rabbit hole would be shallow.
Don't use any mics but purely as a listener here are my ratings: 200: sucks, worse then I thought 400: way better then 200, don't know the price but sounds good Rode: best sounding to my cerumen filled raccoon ears.
Hello from Vorarlberg Austria 😄🇦🇹 Actually no joke I was about to ask you what your best recommendation is for lavalier microphones😅 so you'll clear recommendation is obviously the Sennheiser lavalier microphones🤔 father also any good cheap options or are they all bad😅 Kind regards Leopold 🤗
4 grams that’s a deal breaker for those of us in metric land but if your an imperialist like the good old US of A it’s all about the pounds - it needs to be heavier
I do believe you have to change your default audio setting in the camera app before you can use your TRS to USB-c adapter. Or maybe it just doesn't work regardless of setting on your phone? But that Sennheiser MKE 400 sounds damn fine to my ear holes, definitely better than your current RODE mic. I hope you make the switch. Cheers 🍻.
The MKE 400 is a true winner. The Sound was rich with minimal handling noise. What's funny is both the Rode Micro and MKE 200 sound like the MKE 400 with the low pass filter on. BTW the cell phone audio is dog turd, left in the sun for 3 summers until it turns white. It's glitchy sound, full of hiss as if a 1000 hobos were pissing on an upside down metal trash can lid. As soon as you went to the fuj the sound instantly didn't suck.
With regard to audio, your real underperformer is the Huawei. It sounded as though somebody took a rusty butter knife and hacked a chunk out of the top-end. It was as though someone was speaking from within a full hall closet, that happened to be underwater. Tiny creatures wept, openly.
What kind of mic does Howard Stern use ? His voice is amazingly deep on his show, but he sounds like anybody else on other shows (interviews). That is your assignment for your next video. Well, we'll give to a week for your answer.

The 400 wins, but for 1/3 of the price and 90% of the performance the video micro is clearly the best value hands down.

Hi - great video - do you have a link for the Ulanzi grip/stick?

@@cameraconspiracies Woah, perfect! Thanks Kasey!
I tried looking it up but none of them had that vital stylish flash of red, so big thanks for these links!!
This video confused me so much, I'm going to start using captions instead of recording dialog
Closing my eyes and I’d swear you were Dave Chappelle doing a mic review 😂
Have you ever thought about the SONY ECM-B1M for the A7S III?
And be locked forever with Sony ecosystem? Whoa...
Haha, that joke at the beginning. That's great. 😆
Thank you so much, it
DUDE!
MKE 200 VS MKE 400 VS Rode Videomic go II or Rode videomic NTG ?
I can buy NTG but Im not sure if that is worth it. Help :)
you dropped your thing! 😌
I just receive the make 400. On G9, with mic @ +db and camera @ +6db, I can barely get sound. Am I doing something wrong? Problem with mke400? Videomicro works great.
NEVERMIND....pilot error....used wrong cable...
Did you ever try the Shure VP83 shotgun mic? I have it on my Fuji. Sounds excellent to me.
This guy is the King of sarcasm
Lol
MKE 400 and then the Rode micro but man, the Rode is stupid good for the price. Now if I would just actually remember to use mine, lol.
I am interested in buying sen 200
Can it capture bird noise from a certain distance, like 15 feet to 50 feet.
I mean the noise that I can hear from a distance.
Or
Rode video micro can?
Cardioid means that, if you plot the sensitivity of the mic on a polar graph, the shape of said sensitivity is heart-shaped.
And if it stops working, you have.., Cardiac failure.
Ba-dum Ching!
Can you Test some edutige Microphones?
They have some little tiny ones.
I bought one and it works well but it's the only one I've ever had so I have nothing to compare it to
how about trying the rode video mic ntg and comparing it with these?
The type c to 3.5 cord would work if it had a built in dac.
I'm hunting for a good dongle for the s20 plus and the mate 20 pro.
The reason it doesn't work on your phone is because if you connect it via USB c, the audio isn't going into the dac that is in your phone. Signal only goes to the dac through audio jacks. If your phone doesn't have audio jacks, you may need an external dac
"...because some freaks are shooting video out of the viewfinder." 🤣
Sennheiser MKE-440 works for me. Very rugged, sounds good and batteries last FOREVER.
It's a little bizarrely shaped though.
Overall I preferred the Rode in the end - nicer dynamic range. Just sounds more natural... on the XT4...
That freaking haunting noise of the huawei pre amps....oooouch
I'm thinking of buying a cheap knockoff of the Rode Videomicro Ultracompact, because my a6400 doesn't pick up the sounds of the birds I am shooting. I'm hoping that this way, the depth to which I fall down the rabbit hole would be shallow.
Can you check out the ecm b1m mic for the Sony system?
Sennheiser lav was better by a fair amount. Love the sound from the 200 and 400, ok I’m getting them, or maybe not.
im watching this with Sennheiser IEM , yea fan boy
Another vote for the 400. Night and day difference.
It's a HIGH-PASS filter (Low-cut). We learned nothing. Other than our moms are tinny. But we still love you.
12:43 Hero from the streets 😎😁
Why does the dead cat read Comica when you're testing the Sennheiser Lav mic?
Because it's a Comica dead cat...

WELCOME TO THAT GUY
You’re the butter to my biscuits
Don't use any mics but purely as a listener here are my ratings:
200: sucks, worse then I thought
400: way better then 200, don't know the price but sounds good
Rode: best sounding to my cerumen filled raccoon ears.
A low pass filter is not doing what you think it does. It filters high frequencies.
Hello from Vorarlberg Austria 😄🇦🇹
Actually no joke I was about to ask you what your best recommendation is for lavalier microphones😅 so you'll clear recommendation is obviously the Sennheiser lavalier microphones🤔 father also any good cheap options or are they all bad😅
Kind regards Leopold 🤗
MKE 400!
Clear 🥇🏆 winner !
"That wiggle time is good." That's what she said....
A low pass filter is the same thing as a high cut filter, so of course your voice wouldn't get less "bassy".
This was a great review man. Thanks.
4 grams that’s a deal breaker for those of us in metric land but if your an imperialist like the good old US of A it’s all about the pounds - it needs to be heavier
Finally, after ALL these years you learned to light a scene
