You know, I know I lot of people dont like watching Legend play Vampire Counts, but I really do. He REALLY understands this faction very well, even though they are old school and have so little of what Legend normally considers to be good units. He doesn't like cavalry in Warhammer 2 but he still knows perfectly well how to use them when he needs to. He doesnt like infantry, but he knows perfectly well what to do with them against superior infantry. Watching him play Vampires is just a crash course into Warhammer 2's specific playstyles. He uses Magic, he uses vanguard deployment, he uses heroes.
It's just good viewing. It's so educational. Vampire Counts play exactly like they are supposed to and he totally understands them. Loads of chaff that are expendable and worthless. A couple of gems you micro. Watching him play them is just exactly what it should be.
This is one of my favorite distaster saves. I love the vampire counts, especially when you can pull off wins from nothing.
You can pull off wins with the most OP spell in the game.

Most of the time you just have to blob the enemy into a line and use wind of death, Dwarves don't flank so this is even easier to do to them. Still very impressive win.
I once took out a full army of mainly Hammerers with basically just 6 Varghulfs hit and running. Ghorst helped but it was mainly the big boys. 2 for 1 this disaster battle. Love it.

dwarf "doomstacks" are probably the easiest but also most boring to beat with very little in the late game, just need some monsters and a lot of magic, waste ammo with lord and run around the map for a couple of hours, take out single units and retreat and heal up, rinse and repeat. Choppers are the only real danger.
Hammerers are one of the worst infantry units in the game as well.
@@vemaniks Hammerers are bad against missiles. They're one of the top 5 infantry in the game if they manage to get to melee without being shot at. Which is every time when you play VC.
@@TheYannir Top 5 infantry according to who exactly? With the added splash attacks they have now and how janky it works it arguably nerfed them even more.
Ah yes, the primary use for cavalry: chasing down routing units.

1 Thing I do instead of cinematic mode for better spellcast selection is press space bar. Then the enemy units light up red while yours yellow. Helps me a lot to find the best spot for Wind and Vortex spells. Whereas my aiming for Vortex spells isn't as good of yours, the trick does help a lot to close the "skill/experience" gap
theres a menu on the right side that makes it permanent without pressing space

Depending on the amount of ranged units on the battlefield I do make ranges permanently visible tho.

As a side note, in the same way you aim a Wind spell you can dictate the first movement of a vortex spell with a flick of the mouse in the direction you want it to go in. Helps a lot with the consistency of them.

Haven't even had time to watch, but Legend's definitely going in the book for this one.
thanks for helping me out Legend. I got stuck on that battle because I was playing with out controlling large army to deny them reinforcements. I withdrew a single skeleton to get Manny into the battle. I didn't consider vangarding Vlads entire army and boxing in the enemy reinforcements for wind of death.
Also i'm curious if you think I should have gone after the dwarfs before the invasion. I focused on the Empire and Bretonnia most of the campaign. Dwarfs were minding their own business so I left them alone because I didn't want to fight a war on 4 fronts (North: Chaos), (West: Empire, Bretonnia), (East/South: Dwarfs)
The counts have a really long win condition, you basically need to conquer the old world just for their short campaign win condition.
The problem with the dwarfs is that the border with them is right next to your main settlement ... so a surprise attack might leave you weeping. The territory of the Empire is soooo big that you need many turns to get from one end to the other ... which is why getting the "+150% line of sight" Bloodline trait makes sense. There are enough heroes to have 1-3 standing around in regions which enemies might attack you from ... let them "not move" ... and at the end of the round you flip through the "hero not moved" notifications to check for any armies that are suspiciously creeping up on your territory. The dwarfs even have the underway, so they can come from unexpected places.
I had a lot of trouble the last time I played Vamps as Vlad. I have never save scummed and rolled back so much early on as any other race. I ended up doing the opposite as you: unwillingly went after the Dwarves instead of Empire because Karak Hirn were basically scripted to declare war no matter what I did, which also dragged in Belegar AND Thorgrim. They were a pain to deal with and left me with a bunch of yellow territory that underperformed.
The entire campaign money was tight and my armies felt weak. I felt forced to skelly spam and it wasn't very fun. I tried some higher tier armies which were ok, but still lacking. I didn't start making money until I stopped spending money on settlements (how does that make sense???).
This was all a stark contrast to my last Dwarf campaign. The entire game I had loads of money and could easily field more, better, and funner armies. Maybe I'm just a bad Vamp player? I'm honestly not sure what I could have done differently.
I try so hard to play other races but in the end my VC addiction wins, thanks a lot.

It's funny, I have trouble getting into most of the "evil" factions but always get drawn back to high elves empire and wood elves. It's cool to me that different people are drawn to different races and playstyles

tbh I'm surprised the dwarves are even alive, ever since the orc update I haven't seen the dwarves survive past turn 50.
It depends on if any of the surrounding order factions help them
@@blanck7457 well its a number of things, the lack of order factions in the area compared to the amount of destruction factions is a big thing after the faction reworks, the orcs being able to waaagh a turn after a successful waaagh doesn't help, AI build priorities could also be a large problem but I don't have evidence to prove/disprove it, scrap upgrades also tip things in favor of the orcs depending on what they choose to upgrade. It's nice that the orcs got such love but the balance of power in the region is basically nonexistent, orcs bulldoze the area and the surrounding areas, by turn 70 Grimgor has generally taken karaz-a-karak, destroyed imrik and eshin while also pushing up to kislev (sometimes he confeds azhag, sometimes azhag is dead)
@@NightWhisper8462 Yeah another thing too is the greenskins are way overvalued in terms of autoresolve or just basic balance of power but in an actual fight they underperform. Of course AI vs AI you would expect it to be more balanced but regardless, units like orc and savage orc boar boy bigginz, snotling wagons and stone trolls seem to get too much performance cred.
Also, dwarfs grow slower than greenskins and others, and on top of that black crag has a special building that reduces recruitment time for black orcs by 1 turn.
The early game skaven/greenskins is basically too much for the dwarfs to handle, especially if you add a waghh on top of that.
In my games, the dwarves build massive empires, but yeah occasionally the Orcs will win. Also Ironbrow has no hard opponents so he grows big regardless
Dwarves are a powerhouse in my Clan Pestilens campaign. They wiped out grimgor surprisingly
One thing for everyone and hopefully legend too. To get your single entity/cav/monsters easier way, use guard mode, they will try to get out no matter what.
This is why dwarfs are up there with orc’s on my “Eliminate at all costs” in my campaigns

Yeah quarrelers will kick a surprising number of asses. Those axes are small but they'll swing them until they're dead
Recently in almost all my campaigns the dwarves loose to the greenskins
Otherway around for me, greenskins always crumble, never seen them be huge
In my current Beastmen campaign the greenskins got domed and now as I turn towards the empire, even half of their territory belongs to the dwarfs. But I am rolling them up nicely from the south.
Greenskins snowball fast, so Grimgor seems to either gain massive power and crush the dwarves entirely by turn 70, or the dwarves manage to hold on, get their high-tier units, and just flatten the greenskins. Either way you end up having to square off against one faction ruling half the Old World.

Does the AI know it has melee bonuses? It always seems to prefer melee based armies even with Dwarfs for example
Ironically if the player had such an advantage it would probably still be optimal to just use missile units and trust the bonuses to protect them if necessary

The VC garrison at those forts (at level 4, at least) is pretty damn solid, I had Grimgor slam his stupid face into it (with his Waaagh) when only the garrison was available to defend it, holding the walls and the gate worked nicely.

I as a Dawi enjoyer was very upset by the AI's decision making and formations. THE DAWI SHALL RECORD THIS TRANSGRESSION IN THE DAMAZ KRON AND WE WILL HAVE BLOOD.

I'll have to eventually deal with this in my current Barrow Legion game. While i've been busy conquering Ulthaan and burning Athel Loren, the dwarves have grown very powerful and allied with a decently powerful Empire.
I only let the Dwarfs get too strong once...8 doomstacks of elite units. GG.

Dwarves can be hard with the vampire counts. You either have to use build that are more expensive or have highly leveled spellcaster Lords.
Idk about you guys but I always have a Military Alliance with the dwarves when playing as Vlad. How you may ask? Turn 1 diplomacy you can get a NAP with some actions done. Discover both skaven cities using your heroes. request nap with one of the empire, probably averland. request Nap from dwarves , join war against bloody spear. This should net you a High chance. I always profit by requesting 300 gold as well, more won't work.
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but I've never casted a Wind of Death that wipes out so many units in one hit. It seems to just bounce off the enemy, no matter which race I'm fighting. Foot of Gork however... I just finished an Orc vs Empire battle where my shaman got 900 kills with that spell alone and basically won the battle by himself. Very satisfying seeing it hit home.

I like to use crown of command on summoned zombies. With unbreakable they are really good at tanking valuable ammunition. Like explosives.

Can someone explain to me why every time I attack the army that is besieging my settlement, with or without walls, the garrison shows up as reinforcements? It’s ridiculous. This is happening in my Thorek Ironbrow campaign right now on Legendary and normal battle difficulty. I have put a cumulative over 1000hrs into total war games and don’t remember this being a prominent issue before?
@@hohenzollern6025 if the the army that has you under siege breaks the siege and then you fight, sure that makes sense. But we are taking about a group of people that are surrounded in the same settlement together, going out to fight those that have them surrounded. It’s so stupid treating it as an organized field battle that even calling it a siege or settlement defense feels stupid at that point. Also I’ve been dealing with the AI rushing me every-time in this scenario even when I corner camp and leave them alone, which has been an atypical experience for me.

Definitely agree that strong late game dwarves are scary. But in the current SP meta, it seems like GS usually kill them by the mid-game anyway.

for the comment on master necromancers. I always assumed it was useless to recruit knowledgable lords unless you could recruit them at level 20 due to the fact that without immortality once you disband or lose them in battle their trait no longer applies.
Nah, Lords that are disbanded stay in the recruitment pool and mapwide effects keep going (Traits like knowledgeable and certain skills like the Skaven Warlord skill that boosts all settlement building income). It's only heroes that vanish if they aren't immortal. So you can recruit one as soon as they're available and disband them for the benefits without screwing with your supply lines. That's why any faction that can recruit knowledgeable Lords can have insane winds of magic pools

How the dawi get this strong ? In the last few campaigns i played Grimgore destroys the dwarfs before turn 50.Since the beastman update Malagor ally with the greenskins 9/10 times and they just destroy everything down there
It's like 70/30 in mine. GS tends to win but dwarves have a good shot at times.
Mainly depends on if the empire, or skaven get a piece of the greenskins in my experience. If the dwarves manage to survive largely intact up to turn 70 or so, they start winning against the orcs.

@@udozocklein6023 Abandon is usually to leave something behind, usually with very negative connotations (Like abandon your friends, you left them behind negatively).
"With wild abandon" is a phrase that basically means you abandoned any shame, as an example if you "dance with wild abandon" it means you're dancing like crazy, you've abandoned (left behind) any concerns about it.
And in this case, it means he'll be playing great and cheesing without a care in the world.

@@udozocklein6023 Not a problem at all, it's an unusual phrase when translated literally! And you were pretty close, though cancel is more for something intangible like canceling plans, abandon is often for something physical (like abandoning a castle).
But skelettons are his favorite undead unit!

Vampire counts are called vampire counts because only the vampires count...
Dwarf is no match against VC, because VC is master anti-infantry, and dwarf units are (almost) all infantry. They don't have any magic which is the biggest threat of skelly spam.
VC is like the easiest matchup for the dawi both in MP and SP. Walking into Dawi Artillery is the last thing you wanna be doing and with VC you have no ranged and no other option. The only time VC wins easily against dawi is when you play VC Campaign as Vlad and just vangard the whole army into their face. But to be fair that counters all AI Factions, the AI isn´t smart enough to deal with mass vanguard + vortex/wind.

always be friends with dwarfs, once you conquer the empire having someone to trade with is very good for your economy.
Take border princes (the eastern province), then chainsack the nearest greenskin settlement
Gronti mignol (a port town) is also good for that
+300 military actions against greenskins will make even the grumpiest of longbeards smile and agree to trade wood and pots for iron and gems.
Then the knight of Lyoness declare war on you and the dawi simps will follow regardless of standings
lol I left them alone the entire campaign. I just took out emprie and bretonnia and was preparing for Chaos invasion on legendary. Then they upped and declared war on me while I was fighting Chaos. Sneaking beardmen
@@fabiosordo5313 defensive alliance means it's the knights that are in trouble, it also boosts your relation from having treaties which allieviates great power + intolerance penalties
@@cathulionetharn5139 I am speaking from experience, I had a campaign where I was in a military alliance with the dawi and they were nr 1 power then betrayed me with 500+ relationship (I was knight if Caledor).

The last three playthroughs I have done with three seperate races, the dwarfs have always been wiped out by Grimgor and or the rats. Grimgor usually kills the rats too, his masive herpa derp armies roll over everyone until he starts on the Empire who have their own massive herpa derp zillion stacks.

They should definitely get a huge buff, thats for sure. They perform like a tier 3 unit and dont even have armor piercing...
Dude even early game dwarfs are super powerful yah my tier one infantry are gonna beat miners with blasting charges and 80 armor dwarf warriors

Totally not relevant but….are they doing the lord duels in warhammer 3 like they did in three kingdoms? Model changes would be nice depending on gear as well. Hate seeing my lord wielding a sword when they have a hammer etc. Not a deal breaker but looses the immersion for me :/

@@rohdri Taking him out doesn't create a devastating morale loss in the army? That's the rule in other TW games
@@fartz3808 Difficulty matters here. With the bonus that the ai gets on very hard battle difficulty, the -7 leadership penalty just puts the dwarves back on their basic leadership. It fades after a while to even less.
Dwarves have high leadership values, to the point that they'll often fight to the death before routing anyway.

I have one army with the majority of my Vampires. A dread incarnate Doomstack led by Isabella. She solo'd the entire Legendary Chaos invasion.
the rest of my heroes I have as free agents running around. I think Heroes are stupidly op on campaign map.
@@Scorpion122178 Depends on the hero, some heroes, like wight kings, will accomplish more on the campaign map, while most others are better off in armies. Even Banshees should chill in armies most of the time for that movement boost. I normally only keep necromancers on the map when I'm trying to safely power level them into immortality and get a healthy stockpile of stolen tech.
i wonder if 3 will be as dlc heavy as 1 and 2, hope not because if they got rid of that model and the super units it would be worth buying

I will never understand why people try to get units to move faster by constantly reissuing move orders, especially when those units aren't engaging anything.
Magic definitely seems to be a bit too powerful in warhammer 2. Hopefully it'll be a bit more balanced in warhammer 3.
I know everyone hates using MP as a balance metric, but magic is pretty tame (still often the deciding factor) when the enemy isn't stacking their whole army in a small front. Magic is balanced around the assumption that you hit around 1-3 units with a single cast, not the entire enemy army. Once again, the over-effectiveness of certain tactics in SP is a result of the AI not being programmed to avoid abusable situations.
@@ramped_shadowz6310 You can't really balance anything around MP since they're basically two completely methods of playing, as MP doesn't at all include AI. Anyone that has played even a little bit will know you shouldn't ball up against another player. Which isn't a thing in SP, since all you fight is AI and I think most of what people play is SP/Coop. I personally just wish there was a way to solve this issue in SP/Coop, I certainly don't know how one would go about it.
If anything should get nerfed, ranged should get it first. Magic should feel powerful.
