The red colour on the dough effigy represent blood. This ritual is adopted from the Native religion of Tibet called Bon. Since Buddhism represent non violence colour dye red is added by to represent blood. Ko-nga is a vegetable dye which gives a reddish colour when immersed in water.
Gary you missed the place which know as the true heaven in Ladakh with lesser number of urbanization and crowds which is Zanskar valley which situated southern part of Ladakh. I hope we will meet again with zanskar valley videos.
