  • It was difficult for Crawford to imagine setting aside his lifelong Giants identity and playing for any other franchise. He knows it’s also been difficult for many Giants fans to accept this week’s news of his major-league contract with the Cardinals. So as he settled into his new spring training environs in Florida, he wanted to give those fans an explanation.
In a phone interview with The Athletic, he wanted to make clear that leaving the Giants wasn’t his preference or his decision.
“The bottom line is I was not wanted back by the one person whose (opinion) matters,” said Crawford, referring to Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi. “So I went with a team that gave me a major-league contract. The Cardinals have a long history and tradition. I’ve admired and respected the way the Cardinals have played throughout my career and the way the organization has been run.
“But the bottom line is I wanted to come back to the Giants. That was obviously the ideal situation for me.”

I don't feel too sad about Brandon Crawford leaving the Giants. He played 13 seasons in the big leagues, got drafted by the team that he grew up rooting for, AND won two World Series rings for his favorite childhood team. Not many major league players are that lucky.

I'm a Cardinals fan and I am happy to see him in St. Louis. I think this team needs his leadership role and a part time role anyway. Besides adding him with Lynn, Gibson and Carpenter, how will it hurt the geezer squad anymore?

I think the reason they didn't sign him is because once Luciano goes into a slump (as all rookies inevitably do) fans at Oracle would start chanting for Crawford to replace him. Wouldn't have been fair to Luciano.

Excited to have Crawford on the Cardinals bit its so weird seeing him in a different uniform! Hopefully he can mentor Mason Winn and contribute as a back up!

Him not coming back is sad. Farhan could have still used him as a mentor for Luciano and Schmidt.

Time waits for no one. It was past time to move on. Hopefully he does well but regardless sooner or later it’s time to end it.

Was it just money?(Entirely possible) Or was it a " We want the young guy " conversation? If Crawford had stayed, it would have been awkward with Luciano. And how many fans would want Crawford back after the first bad game the Luciano had? It is actually better for Luciano that Crawford left,(I know I'm in the minority here). Let Crawford be a mentor/bench player/glorified coach elsewhere. When he retires(perhaps he should have, but, can't blame him for wanting to go on), let him come back to be the mentor/coach then

Giants fans don't want Zaidi back.
They won't win any WS rings with him.

Sadly, it was time for B-Craw to step down as the starting shortstop for the San Francisco Giants. But I don't see why he couldn't have stayed around as a backup. Zaidi is such a duplicoius nerd who talks out of both sides of his mouth- saying he needs to pave the way for younger talent, and then signing Nick freaking Ahmed the next day.
Zaidi occasionally pulls off a brilliant baseball move, but the man has no emotional intelligence nor marketing panache. Farhan really should be a. behind the scenes guy, with a move savvy orator and business man above him. You know, a baseball executive who actually sees things from a player and fan's perspective. Some one like Buster Posey. Because Zaidi treats players like tins of soup to be rearranged on a store shelf, I feel the Giants reputation as being a player-friendly "classy" organization is coming into question.

I love how Giants fan pretend like Crawford was a stud of a baseball player. His entire career was inconsistent either he was a Gold Glover or he would lead the league in errors,He was never known for having a consistent bat,It's like when Giant fan pretend Brandon Belt was a quality player when he was one of the worst 1st basemen to play the game, Constantly struck out Atleast 200xs a year and never played a complete season because of injury and could never hit over 30 let alone 20hrs a year...They should have cut Crawford last year..

I am a Giants and Crawford fan. But honestly, injuries and lack of production during the last few years ...well, I thought it was time for him to retire. If he can muster a big year with the Cardinals, good for him. I really, really like the guy. Seems like a class act. But I would like to see the Giants find an everyday shortstop that can play decent defense and provide some offense. Doesn't need to be a 300 hitter or hit 30 HRs. Brandon has really struggled the last couple of years.

It'd be cool if you moved on from the 2 mods who try to run your chats and aren't very knowledgeable about baseball, the team and players. Oh well.

You retire Crawford and bring him back. The Giants make the 5th most money in baseball yet have the 3rd or 4th best roster in their division. Comon man.

    here is the thing
craw wasnt just another giants player
the org used his story of his and his family's connection to the team to market the team
this smacks of what was done with mays
and farhan's claim of what is done with the final roster spot doesnt hold water
the "forever giants" culture that was built over the past 25 years, is now dead

Sports is such a cruel business. The player may want to be loyal but the teams just aren't. Seen it far too many times where the player just gets the boot.
The player at the end of the day has to do what he has to do for him and his family.

I loved both Brandons, now we are Brandon-less. It hurts, but necessary to move on. I like the Chapman add. But it doesn't give much chance for Schmitt to gain a spot unless his bat takes off.

Injury prone Belt should retire already.

Craw was getting a bit injury prone himself. Belt had surgery to correct his issues. Not even playing full time Belt hit 19 HRs with the Jays.@@747heavyboeing3

So sad. I wish he had just retired after last season. He said in an interview with the Cardinals that his children wanted him to continue to play, hence that is why he signed with the Cardinals.
