In this easy Illustrator tutorial for beginners we look at how to take your vector artwork and export it as a PNG file with whatever resolution you like.
We will also learn about the difference between PNG files for web, why they should not be used for print, and how to use the transparent background feature.

I really hope this helps you out. It's not always easy to understand the best options for export in Illustrator, and with so many choices and boxes to select, sometimes it can be overwhelming.

@designwithdale I tried this with png 600 instead of 300 and, no matter what I do, the following error box pops up. “The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error. [!now]”
      Any suggestions? 😭😭😭

Thank you. This is quite helpful. I always export the file with the ‘export as’ function for uploading on social media and the result is not that satisfying. I might change it to ‘export for web next time. Is my understanding correct? ❤

can u help? In a tshirt site, i need to make a file with 4600px with, 4300px PNG, in 300dpi. But in the export, i dont see the sizes format that i can change. As I export in illustrator as a Export>Save as Screen, then i can setup the formats. Why can't i not do that as normal Export>Save As (option). Then i can not chose the format, just the DPI as in your video. In this video I leaned from you how to export it, thanks, but I like to know how I can set it up so I can enter the format size. Can you make a video for this so I can learn it from you, or explain how i need to setup it. Thank you for help!

Any way to keep a high quality while keeping the format of the canvas?

    • @designwithdale

Set dimensions and 300 beforehand - if you set up as 72 then export as 300 you're adding more pixels per inch to the final file.

Thanks for this. Question: Is there a way to export a high-resolution PNG but keep the dimensions fixed. Like, if my original Illustrator file is 600-px wide, can I spec it so the PNG is 600 px wide and 300 ppi. I swear I was able to do this last week but am unable to reproduce it. Am I mistaken?

so, i found a solution, which is not perfect, but it will do, what you're aiming for. illustrator is not userfriendly in this regard.
the program won't change the resolution, if you chose 72 dpi (or ppi - dots, points - it's the same). if you chose 300dpi, it will multiply your images size with 72. you will get more pixels, but you will also get more inches, which is absolutely bonkers!
so the solution will be to trick the program.
you will divide the imagesize you want by the resolution and multiply that with 72.
      (ImgSize / dpi * 72)
say you want a png, which is a 3600 px square at 300 dpi.
      3600 / 300 = 12
      12 * 72 = 864
You will have to start your project with 864 x 864 pixels.
when you export it at 300 dpi, it will be upscaled to 3600 x 3600 pixels, but it will have 300dpi.
it is not the best solution, because you wont have always round numbers (like if you divide 1920 by 300 times 72 it will be 460.8), but it is so far the best solution i found.
it is a shame that illustrator has this major issue and i can't explain to myself, why they failed so hard at this crucial point, but it is what it is.
      hope it helps you out.
i'm done for today with this. it's been hours!
