Yui-metal fell off this stage the day before during Headbanger, so you can see railings around the stage which were put up for the second day! always full power!

The crowd interaction is the same all over the world. Fans treat the music videos as training videos so they know what to do and when to do it, fans all over the world have even learnt to respond in Japanese. It really is something to see.

    Great reaction, thanks!
"Catch me if you can" is about playing some kind of hide and seek or tag game... but with an "oni", a sort of Japanese mythological creature similar to an ogre. Which certainly, it's more interesting... and dangerous haha...
This is definitely on their heavier side musically but it also has some cute vocals and choreo, including my favorite move: the infamous "Moa slide". It was my very first BABYMETAL song (exactly this version) and it got me hooked from the first moment.
The whole idea was from Kei Kobayashi aka Kobametal, their producer and the person responsible for all of their music, having the first and the last words while they have a team of songwriters. Choreography is by Mikiko Mizuno, a very relevant Japanese choreographer (ASH, Perfume, Elevenplay, Sakura Gakuin, etc.).
Their background... it's difficult. 😁 They started in 2010, being 12 and 11 years old, as a sub-unit of a J-pop school themed idol group called Sakura Gakuin. Kobayashi was producing it and he managed to create the "heavy music club" (Jūonbu) making real his crazy idea to mix metal with J-pop elements. He chose specifically Suzuka Nakamoto because of her surprisingly powerful vocals and stage presence and completed the trio picking two smaller girls: Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi as the twin factor.
I suggest you to watch CrypticMisery's in-depth guide for more information.
They are currently touring in the US and Canada and will be back in Europe in November-December this year.
    Until next time!

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。Are you going to see BABYMETAL show at 013 Poppodium in Tilburg on Dec. 3 ?
Speaking of solo plays by each instrumentalist, Western (American) Kami Band is doing it in the newest song "Metali" in every recent show before the girls show up on stage. In BABYMETAL concerts, performers need a lot of energy and they require it to the audience, too. In actual venues my smart watch indicated more than 600Kcal consumption after the shows this year. BM works well as workout. 🤣

Nice one! Here’s how I think this song is created:
Fox God: …okay, now mix in a dash of “cute” and a dash of “heavy”.
    Babymetal: Yes
Fox God: No wait, you’re putting in too much of both!!
    Babymetal: Yes, Yes yes.
Also, as a middle aged man, if you were to tell me a while ago that I will be jamming out to a couple of teenagers singing about hide and seek, I woulda laughed.
But then….Babymetal came along and schooled me in the error of my ways. I absolutely crank this tune all the time now. This is the power of Babymetal!

Good reaction. The Kami Band do get their time in the spotlight every now and then with their instrumental intros to some songs.
In this concert they were Takayoshi Ohmura and Leda Cygnus on guitars, BOH with his 6 string bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums.
'Catch Me If You Can' is the best metal song about playing a game that's a sort of cross between tag, blind man's bluff and hide & seek I've ever heard. It is the perfect mix of the two extremes with the brutal instrumentals and the sweet vocals - and the game they are playing, they're playing with an Oni 👹(a sort of Japanese ogre popular in regional festivals and used specifically to frighten children ... which amuses me probably more than it should😁).
The growling vocals (they are on a backing track) are the Oni👹 asking things like "Are you ready?" and the best response has to be "Maada da yo" (No, not yet) while doing a running away from an Oni dance.🏃‍♀🏃‍♀🏃‍♀👹
You asked how they got together - no they were not familiar with metal (they were aged 12 and 11 and listened to JPop ... I was older than them when I started listening to metal. I only had records my brother or friends played to listen to, BABYMETAL were already performing at metal concerts and festivals in their early teens, watching and meeting all the bands).
There was no set formula, no guarantee of success, not even an identified audience for them. This is a passion project that blew up beyond any and all expectations and it is based entirely on their talents.
They started as a sub-unit of a school themed J-Pop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin which was set up by the Amuse talent agency as a way to coach and train about a dozen of the most talented girls on their books in all aspects of entertainment (singing, dancing, acting, modelling, writing, stage management, TV presenting etc) with a view to their choosing how they would like to continue their career when they were at school leaving age (15 in Japan).
The sub-units were like after school clubs and would have their own themed songs and dances, so there was a cooking club, tennis club, science club, baton twirling club and more - BABYMETAL was the Heavy Music club.
BABYMETAL was the pet project of one metalhead producer who was inspired to experiment with this fusion of Metal with JPop aesthetics after seeing Su-metal (the lead singer) singing with her previous JPop trio and being very impressed with her no holds barred singing style and stage presence - she was only 10 or 11 at that time. He pictured her fronting a metal band and got his chance to work with her when her previous group ended and she joined Sakura Gakuin - she was 12.
He wanted to breath fresh life into the metal and rock scenes in Japan which were stagnant and becoming less popular as they got less and less air time and as their audiences aged and drifted away and he wanted to attract a new and younger audience to metal, people who might have never been exposed to it before.
He also thought it would be interesting to add an element of choreographed dance as that was really not a thing in metal, so he chose Su's two talented young friends Yui and Moa to support her.
They have been touring the world since 2014 - they toured Europe this summer as special guests of Sabaton, they are currently in the US co-headlining with Dethklok, they will be back in Europe this autumn headlining their own tour again.
Obviously their Japanese crowds are best as they know all the moves and shouts, but don't underestimate their SE Asian, American, Australian and European fans, they can be just as animated and responsive and will join in even though most of it is in Japanese.
BABYMETAL are the most successful Japanese band internationally of all time, they were the first Japanese band to headline Wembley Arena as long ago as 2016, their 3rd album was the first by any Asian (not just Japanese) band to reach number 1 in the US Billboard Hard Rock charts.

    Thanks for this reaction.
You might think Babymetal would not be a good fit for a metal festival or would not perform in the Netherlands, but the video you watched was from 2014. That was the show to promote the first album release. At this show it was announced Babymetal would have their first world tour, lead singer Su-metal was 16 and the other 2 would turn 15 and they would celebrate it on the first 2 shows of that tour. Those were in Paris and Cologne (Keulen), Germany. After that was their first metal festival outside of Japan, which was in the UK, mainstage second of the day at the Sonisphere festival, around noon. They got a big crowd, lots of people were curious. Some came to see them have a disaster. In 2015 they had an other world tour, in 2016 an other, they had a show in the UK for the release of the second album and later that tour they performed at Fortarock in the Netherlands, they were mostly well received, some people will always complain "they are not metal". Babymetal did not really tour in Europe in 2017. In 2018 they came back to the Netherlands they had 2 sold out shows in Tivoli Vredenburg in Utrecht. In 2020 they came back for a (if I remember correctly) sold out show in Poppodium 013 in Tilburg (days before the lock down in the Netherlands) and they had an other Tilvoli Vredenburg in Utrecht planned for 2020 later that year, but was cancelled because of the pandemic (I don't remember if it sold out, my guess is: yes). In 2023 Babymetal came back to open for Sabaton in Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam and they are coming back later this year for their own show in 013, Tilburg in December. On average everywhere Babymetal performs they sell out.

Sugoi! Enjoyed your reaction. When I initially stumbled upon BABYMETAL (5-ish years ago), what surprised me was how much this totally unique concept rejuvenated and broadened my love of pop, rock, and metal music. One significant difference I noticed in BABYMETAL's themes were the lack of sex, drugs, angst, and general "bad behavior" of my era, and similar type themes in rap and hip-hop, and also in several of the more popular K-Pop, J-Pop, and other 'Idol' groups. Because BABYMETAL formed when the girls were just 11 and 12 years old, the use of such themes would have been highly inappropriate. In fact, over BABYMETAL's 13-year history, they have deliberately not used suggestive or sexual imagery, lyrics, or choreography in their music or performances.
Instead, BABYMETAL's themes are of unity, rebellion against the unjust, resolve to forge ahead despite struggle, and to give and accept help along the way. Ultimately, I find this very refreshing.

Right on! I drifted away from heavy metal for the same reason BABYMETAL brought me back in = the messaging. I was suffering (for more than half a year) from a severe pet loss of an 18 year old dog. BABYMETAL cured me in one day. Akatsuki was the one that really cured me. "Love for someone (dog) is yours and for you to cherish until your body ceases to exist". Now I can see movies of my dog with a huge smile, thanking her for the rich times she gave us.

As far as BABYMETAL goes, they have been consistent in their positive messaging and attitude, and not just musically. The girls and the entire BABYMETAL production team have earned rave reviews within the industry for the professionalism, courtesy, respect, and gratitude they show towards everyone they work with.

Babymetal had a unique origin, Su, the lead singer (in the ponytail), was performing in a girls group call Karen Girl's. A music producer saw them, and thought Su was limited by the pop music and arrangements, and that she had exceptional stage presence. The producer came up with the concept of Su performing metal with a pair of twins. A couple of years later he found himself working with Su, and got permission to do a song as a one off, and he recruited Yui and Moa. And it just took off unexpectedly. It started as a way to give Su's unique skills a way to shine,

they are in the middle of a north american tour, and will be heading to europe afterward. most of the songs in the set list are more current ones, but they do throw in a couple of older songs like "headbanger" and "megitsune". "road of resistance" from the first album usually closes the show. the concerts have been running just over an hour with 11 or 12 songs. it would seem they are trying to show a more mature side now that they are in their 20s,but the cuteness is still there.

Babymetal just toured Europe and going back in December and I believe it's completely sold out. Their venues away from Japan range from 3k to 20k seaters ....I'm going to see them in Los Angeles and that's a 18k seater both nights sold out.
