It's crazy to think that over 60-70 years konoha had 4 Hokage (Hashirama, Tobirama, hiruzen and Minato) but has also had another 4 in a third of the time (Tsunade, Kakashi, Naruto and Shikamaru)
I don't think anyone would succeed as the hokage at this point. There is too many factors against him that are unavoidable. Anyone in his position would fail.

I doubt it'll be addressed but the writers could explain why Shikamaru was appointed. His proximity to the previous Hokage and his in-law relationship to the Kazekage is probably a strategic advantage that are additional perks to his incredible intelligence in all manners relevant to the Hokage position. It's possible that the behavior of Sarada and the actions of Sasuke might have caused aspersions to be cast upon Sakura that disqualified her for the role of Hokage and Kakashi could have turned the role down. I don't really care if it's explained or not. The focus of the story isn't on any of the kages but I think if the writers want to play around with the idea of someone like Danzo being a Hokage for a decent tenure then I think Shikamaru is the best vehicle to flesh out that idea. I think a dynamic of Shikamaru being a more Danzo-oriented Hokage with Konohamaru being his Hiruzen/Naruto-oriented assistant could be a nice inversion for them to play around with.
First, Great insight there in Konohamaru being the aid and filling the role of Naruto/Hiruzen/Hashirama. ^^ Also, me too. I would like to think there are greater political ramifications at play as to why Shikamaru had to be the next Hokage. Realistically speaking, that has to be a massive benefit to the Hidden Sand Village given that the wife of the Hogake is also the sister of the Kazekage. Yet, it has to be in Konoha's benefit, too. If Konoha has a weak Hokage and is also weak with the loss of Naruto, then it makes sense to have an immediate powerful ally in Gaara. Also, I'd imagine Gaara would, deep down anyway, be taking Naruto's "death" quite personally.

I've read a lot of comment of people commenting whether or not he was a good choice to fill the Hokage positon and literally never was Suna mention, which I think is stupid. I mean, Shikamaru IS one of the reasons why Konoha's alliance with Suna is so strong. Naruto too of course, but the fact is, Shikamaru literally married into the Kazekage's family, his wife is the ambassador between Suna and Konoha, hell in Gaara's book it was even mention that Shikadai could actually have a claim to the Kazakage position if he wanted it. I mean politicaly speaking, their family has to be one of the most influent in the the five countries alliance. We probably won't know why he was the one to be appointed, but I really think he was one of the best choices. In terms of strengh he probably isn't as strong as the other Kage but in terms of leadership, strategizing and politics, he is one of the best. Plus, Shikamaru potentially being a good fit for the Hokage role was mentioned on multiple occasions in Naruto. I think that's also important. Also I don't think strengh should even matter at that point. Literally the only people that could actually fight their enemies right now are Boruto and well, literally their allies/ennemies. Even Naruto and Sasuke couldn't do much and they are the strongest.

That's something in the Naruto series that the elders of all the villages were vehemently against. I admit, I could be wrong, but now that I think about it, I get the feeling Kishimoto didn't put a lot of forethought into the likely ramifications of such a pivotal narrative change. For sure, would be excellent to learn how Shikamaru actually became Hokage as opposed to, for example, having Kakashi step back in. Heck, in retrospect we might have a Hokage trinity in terms of "personality roles" where Shikamaru is like a sensible Danzo, Konohamaru is like Hiruzen/Hashirama and Kakashi is like Jiraiya. Up until now, we've always seen the Fire Shadow and the Shadow of the Fire Shadow (the Hokage and the Shadow Hokage). Although Shikamaru isn't the most powerful guy around in terms of physical and fighting abilities, as you pointed out, his leadership qualities and decision making skills are off the charts. This is also proven in how he married one of the most powerful kunoichi, Temari, and knows to stay on her good side. Wise man, indeed! And who knows! Maybe Shikamaru has been training with Kakashi to make up for his weaknesses.

I will even admit when it comes to him I'm a little biased however I'm not biased to the point where I can't make an argument. As much as I always defend him, especially right now with everyone pretty much saying he sucks, even I can't agreee with everything he did. On the other hand I strongly believe there is nothing more important to him than his family and the protection of the village. I personally don't like comparing him to Danzo because honestly, to me Danzo was one of those characters who convinced himself he was doing everything for Konoha while in reality it was only for himself. There is a huge difference between them, Shikamaru would never sacrifice anyone for his own benefit. I like the idea of Shikamaru having his own "Shadow Hokage", I guess Kakashi could be it. Didn't one of the authors say that he would get a bigger role (as in finally an appearence in the manga 😅) ? Maybe he could be investigating on what truly happened to Naruto and Hinata on Shikamaru's account. It's literally mentionned that they don't know what happened and if they didn't entirely forget how to write Shikamaru I really don't think he would satisfy himself with no answers considering the death of one of his closest friends. About the whole thing with Suna, I honestly think the authors forgot or just didn't bother with the issue. Which is too bad since it could potentially be one of the most important and interesting thing if they forcused on it. You're right, in Gaara's book, the reason the elders wanted him to get married was precisely because they were afraid of Shikatema's kid possible influence in their country. In the anime it is also mention that Shikamaru is not very appreciated there because they pretty much don't think he deserves Temari because he's not prestigious enough. I think they made him the Hokage because they needed someone who has proven he can fully detach from other characters and make the logical choice. They wanted someone who would put the full might of the village against Boruto. The needed brain washed villain who has proven he was willing to kill Kiwake (now Boruto) in the past. Everyone has already been fine hating Shikamaru for it, but nobody is ready to see Sakura or Kakashi as the villain.

yeah, they probably chose Shikamaru as Hokage because he has shown the ability to detach and make logical choices. They needed someone who could go against Boruto if necessary. Plus, Shikamaru has already faced backlash for his past actions, whereas Sakura and Kakashi might not be seen as suitable villains.
He loses to part 1 kakashi and Orochimaru. Loses to every jinchuriki, loses to every Akatsuki, loses to a lot of people in the village like Lee Kakashi and Sakura. He would lose vs every kage including old hiruzen. IMO he would still lose to chunin exam gaara and that’s crazy.
Ino Shika Cho is basically the only thing that can lead the village strong enough at this point on its own, and having the strategist member calling the shots for the entire village as well as who does the actual Hokage duties behind the scenes makes the most sense. The hokage has sort of had the expectation to be the ultimate defense, but countless times they fall short or “fail” just for another member (and in some cases a Genin) of the village to succeed. Give the dude a break, he’s likely the best candidate

That’s only happened with tsunade and Naruto. Hashirama handled business. Tobirama died and handed the title to the next strongest. Hiruzen handled business and died. Minato handled business and died. They just die is the problem

Shikamaru is the only guy that can immobilize Eida since his jutsu doesnt harm her, so there is a strong strategy point towards Shikamaru, even tho he was captivated by charm he can still use it to immobilize her for some time, but yeah he is the weakest of all hokage i agree with that
Codes claw marks aren’t deadly it’s just like the FTG seals. But somehow when he tried to use them on daemon they were still reflected. Could be bad writing but could also mean daemon can reflect anything not just lethal attacks
It’s funny you say “captivated by charm” because I truly wonder how much Shikamaru is unaware, or better said, aware. Remember when everyone was put under genjutsu during the chunin exams and Kakashi asks Sakura to release him and he had just been faking it the whole time. Just my own personal head canon/theory.
He doesn’t need to be hokage to do that and even if he did it wouldn’t work. There’s other non lethal jutsu. Thats like saying Genjutsu should work since it isn’t really a physical attack. You could just genjutsu paralyze her or deamon since it isn’t actually meant to hurt them.
I think it’s unfair to assume Shikamaru has gotten weaker or stayed exactly the same during the time skip. It’s entirely possible that Shikamaru, knowing the precedent of the role he was having to step into, underwent some kind of highly specialized training to prepare himself to step up to the plate. It’s highly unlikely this kind of training would make him relevant to the Naruto or the otsosuki but him becoming as strong as the other Kage or even like Tsunade level is possible. As a huge fan of the character I hope this is the direction that is taken

I have a number of issues with Shikamaru being Hokage: 1. We've been told upteen times that strength is not enough to be a Jonin/Hokage in itself. Yet Shikamaru (and the Naras in general) are apparently able to advance largely based off of (1) squad chemistry with the same trio and (2) overall intelligence. In fact, this trope has already been done in Boruto with Shikadai being the first one promoted. At some point there needs to be a minimum expectation that one's actual combat prowess should be able to keep up with the minimum level of knowledge required and that an individual should be able to function outside of the same 3 clan squad (there's no guarantee that an Akimicha and Yamanaka will be available every time Shikamaru is in a combat situation). Do we see any real attempt by Shikamaru to learn a more diverse array of jutsu or otherwise become more well-rounded in combat? Not really (or at least we have no evidence of this so far). 2. Shikamaru was already in the perfect role as Hokage's aide, and one can argue that his role as aide is honestly harder to fill. On a side note, Naruto 100 percent needs to pull a "you're in my chair" once he comes back.
But why do you think he can only work in this trio? With the shadow shackle he literally only needs to land, then anyone could literally walk to the enemy and cutting their throats or shit with a kunai- which was doomed useless on this channel as well lol
I solemly think that Kakaashi was going to be Hokage again maybe even Sakura but because both of them are so closely linked to Sasuke that role was'nt given to any of the 2 ,Sasuke going rouge again made everything worse

This is exactly what they are missing. The dude have the most access in tech. Shikamaru took down temari with kunai jacket and a dugged whole, took down hidan with some plan digged whole and paper bombs. Imagine giving the guy access to all jutsu what unlimited plans he can pull off.

Shikamaru is the best choice for 2 reasons. 1. It all goes back to what his dad said during the retrieval arc. “Your friends will still go on missions, what if they don’t come back because you’re not there.” 2. Asuma’s last words. “Protect the king” With those words forever ringing in his head and how he crafted his life. He will always be the perfect person to protect the village.

People forget how wide the mental gap is between a genius and other smart people. He's the kind of guy that shows up when the pressure is on, too. This story will be the story of how the guy who wasn't the strongest overcame all of his obstacles and proved those that doubted him wrong to save his village if not the world. The power levels are becoming so ridiculous that very few people by themselves have the ability to be relevant, battle-wise. That's exactly why the winning strategy here is not and never will be "go Baryon mode and beat the shit out of someone until they're dead" or "blast them with powerful jutsu until they disintegrate." It's very clear that strategy is going to be needed. Beyond strategy, nuanced analysis is going to play a huge role. He is literally their best hope.
I would've liked to see Konohamaru as Hokage. Him stepping into Naruto's role really would've made everything come full circle. And he would have shika there to help still, and ideally as Hokage he would've undergone some training to be at the correct power level. Like the "we have Naruto at home" guy
I would rather see konohamaru as someone who is like hiruzen or asuma fighting style combined with naruto's influence. No sage or anything fancy like that but some insane ninja skills plus ninja tech. He has already showed that. So imagine him with increased skills.
i think the best way for Shikamaru to shine combat wise is to have Ino and Chouji as his bodyguards. i feel so bad for him, because as you've mentioned, he doesn't have a lot battle avaliable techniques that dont require some sort of set up. While I refuse to read Boruto, here's hoping that he has some of level up to at least make his promotion worth it
While it’s not a direct connection Shikamaru’s sensei was Asuma Sarutobi who was the son of the 3rd Hokage. The Sarutobi’s are somewhat of a big name in Konoha so he at least has a connection to the previous Hokage’s even if it’s the loosest of strings
And him inheriting the will of fire from asuma and therefore all the others in that line…hiruzen, tobirama, hashirama, Asura, Hagoromo, etc is actually keeping with certain themes.
The thing I doin't understand is that being a Kage is mainly an administrative job. Why would people need to be strong to be a good leader/administrator? It is cool when the Kage is really strong, but does he needs to be?

Himawari hasn't broke out of omnipotence. She is just her father's daughter and has a kind heart. To her Boruto is Naruto's adoptive son, it's just that since there is no body, she thinks there is more to the story. But Kawaki is still the one she tried to knock out the day Naruto became Hokage.
I would think that Kakashi would've replaced Naruto like Hiruzen replaced Minato but i guess Kakashi is not willing to bear that burden anymore. However, given the circumstances Shikamaru would be a good choice since he knows the current issues Konoha is facing and his strength actually lies in his intelligence where he has shown to be able to out strategize those who are stronger than him.
Being deserving of the role and being capable are different. The kind of person Shikamaru is does make him deserving for sure. His power level being really low now and even fairly low for his entire life though… kinda makes him a bad candidate for Hokage hypothetically. That said, you’ve talk repeatedly about how Hokage don’t do as much because they’re busy pushing papers and making deals which is something he excels at which his shadow Hokage and fellow Konoha shinobi can do the actual footwork.
Sakura being Hokage would be a nice touch considering this would mean that Sarada's rebellion would be pointed at her own mother. She would be torn between her parents - Sasuke who was never there but trusted her when it counts, and Sakura, the one who was always there but refuse to see your point of view when you really need them the most. That would be much much more interesting to watch develop.
Orochimaru would’ve been my choice for hokage ik it’s impossible because of what he’s done but when it comes to power and knowledge, he’s perfect for the current situation, him and Amado could maybe come up with something, they’re both scientists

Shikamaru was born for this role. It's too bad the village is lacking manpower, if they had their big damn heroes the leaf would be untouchable. Sadly, I reckon the 8th hokage will inevitably be killed off as a martyr to pave the way for Narutos return as the 7th.
I don't have issues with Shikamaru being Hokage. The more pressure Shikamaru is put under, the stronger he becomes- that's his character; like his WHOLE character. I also think the destruction of Konoha is classic Kishimoto misdirection. Also, this leaves Gaara and Darui as the strongest Kage barring Shikamaru getting a timeskip based glow-up to his capabilities- which are both the Kage most likely to be reasonable with, or even defend him. While I do think Shikamaru gets overhyped, I don't think it's a bad choice for him to be the village's leader.
In reality, Shikamaru being at the helm makes the most sense so the strongest shinobi in the village are not bogged down by diplomatic duties like naruto always was. People are just miffed because Naruto-verse already set a president of Hokage being the strongest of the Kage in almost all era. In a practical point of view, it makes absolute sense for him to be the Hokage. I'll put down binding kages and threatening to kill as poor writing as someone diplomatic with 200+ IQ would not do that. That's something a typical hothead will do and completely out of character for Shikamaru. I can even see adult Sauske threatening as he's just as cold as Shikamaru and has blood on his hands, he has the will to make hard choices and ultimately cares about results. It made absolutely no sense for a 200+ IQ tactician like Shikamaru to do this and Naruto made to apologize for his actions as if Shikamarua kid who doesn't know any better. Frankly, I feel that was disrespectful to his character.
Maybe Orochimaru, it would be fun to have him in the story again, hes a sannin, functionally immortal and has immense scientific resources, he also recieved a full pardon after the war, and i think he'd bring an interesting dynamic. Only thing is he hasn't been involved in the plot since the Mitsuki arc and probably doesn't know a lot about whats recently taken place.
tbh Orochimaru is a better option than Shikamaru but I highly doubt that the elders and especially the daimyo would approve of it since he had a questionable will of fire when he joined akatsuki
Nick, Shikamaru does kinda line up with how a hokage is elected since his sensei Asuma is the son of the 3rd hokage and the 3rd hokage was trained by the first and second hokage plus he comes from one of the prestigious clans of konoha. He might not be related to any of the hokage but he was trained by the son of the hokage which puts him in the same category as Minato and Kakashi.
He is asuma's disciple and naruto's adviser. He's a hard nose ninja that has the will of fire just as much as the second hokage. Him being hokage is like having a war general becoming president.

Jiraiya turned down the Hokage post multiple times. Tsunade was not the first choice after Hiruzen or Minato. Yet, she became Hokage because it was needed. I see a similar case in Shikamaru. He’s needed and probably the only one willing to take up the post in Naruto’s absence. Lastly, this is a Kowaki influenced Konoha, so do the normal rules even apply here?
I don't think them choosing Tsunade was a matter of "settling" it's just that Jiraiya was more accessible at the time. They are a three way deadlock implying that they are about equal, Snake > Toad > Slug > Snake etc.

Tsunade had simply retired and disappeared and become a notorious gambler, definitely a second choice lol. If they got to her a few days later she’d have betrayed the Leaf, and for all we know could end up in the Akatsuki or something
I was disappointed it’s not Konahamaru the 8th hokage. Since episode 2 in OG Naruto there was links that Konahamaru would be the hokage after Naruto and his progress was amazing. I’m really not taking Boruto as serious tbf and to me everything finished with Naruto becoming Hokage.
Well technically Shikamaru is related to the Hokage line because he was trained by Asuma who is from the Guardian Shinobi 12 and son of the Former 3rd Hokage Hiruzen. So now that I think about it his pedigree is there and it makes sense combined with what he did in the 4th Great Ninja War, I can see why he was elected.

@@philiphockenbury6563Ohnoki is a menace but to say he carried against Madara is a bit of a stretch, without Tsuande healing them constantly, Ohnoki and the rest of the Kage would’ve fell much sooner to Madara, Madara even says that once he kills Tsuna, it’s over for them. Ohnoki’s particle style is useless against Madara too. Tsuande definitely carried, Ohnoki is a close second though.
With Shikamaru as hokage, Konoha could be a strong by group village than strong by individuous. Like chess, the King isn't the strongest, but its power comes by coordenating the power of those stronger tham him. This strategyc role fits, in my mind, in an hokage like Shikamaru.
I thought it was going to be Kakashi again, too, or Sakura. But I think for political reasons, namely their connections to Sasuke, it couldn't be them. So by process of elimination I guess Shikamaru is the best choice. So the only part I feel I really could add anything to is his strength. If we take his realization with the tree, and combine it with the idea that naruto was killed. I feel like it would be enough of a catalyst to have shikamaru decide he can't be that weak anymore. Especially if he has any inkling he could be up next for hokage. He's lazy, yes. But a genius. Surely, he'd realize that he needs to step up his strengths in light of what's happened. I don't think it would make his the strongest current kage. I still believe that Shikamaru deserves to be the 8th hokage. I understand that strength is needed to save the entire konoha, but with his intelligence, he was able to win battles. Mind is more powerful than strength. Shikamaru thinks hundred times ahead before the enemy can give a final blow. He just needs people to help him execute his tactics. We don’t know yet with that three years he secretly has discovered a power that made him a deserving hokage. It’s time to see someone outside the Godly predecessors to take the mantle of a hokage. 😊

I didn't realize it until last week that with Kawaki saying what he said in the beginning flashforward that it can now be Shikamaru who is gone and not just Naruto. Oh nos.
Couldn't Shikamaru have struggled to snap the tree because he's exhausted from holding 5 kage in place against their will? Even holding 2 against their will has got to be draining, and we see Shikamaru's chakra drains quickly when controlling more people or stronger ones. I think that could explain why he failed to pull off such a simple feat shortly afterwards
Shikamaru plans. strategizes and makes decisions while everyone else effectively turns into soldiers. This is the case for empires in the real world as well. That’s why he’s the best candidate as someone like Kakashi are more useful on the battlefield as some sort of general or commander. Having Shikamaru killed in war against the Osutzuki isn’t utilizing his skill properly, his brain is a valuable asset not his combat capabilities.
I want to know what happened or how it all happened. I want to know who were nominated and how the voting turned out. Shikamaru is one of my favorite characters earlier in naruto but after the hidan/kakuzu arc, my interest on his character kinda gets lower and lower as the story progressed.
Shikamaru is the best option for 8th hokage for one simple reason, the strength of a kage isent relevant anymore. Before a kage needed to be one of, if not the strongest person in the village and a good leader, But by the ending of Shippuden both Naruto and Sasuke 17yr old kids became so strong they could wipe out all kage and villages with the flick of their wrists, and now in Boruto it's even worse cuz ninjutsu dosent even work against their enemies so they need to fully depend on the kids with their own alien powers to do all the fighting, so now a kage has zero to do with fighting strength, or the acknowledgment of the ppl, it's 100% based on who's the smartest to to deal with these situations, more like a war general than a kage.

his last major decision before becoming hokage was to tell sarada & sumire not to befriend the god child in thier village even if theyre literally the only 2 girls she could ever befriend...... He valued the chance at killing Eida above her being a legitimate true citizen, ally, & asset to the village. He made one of the worst decisions in the history of naruto...He cant be a great hokage cause he has already fucked it up royally & is paying for it every day that passes.

Naruto's approach to Kawaki is another great example. They never could be because of Sasuke. Shippuden did a shit job of adapting it but the Naruto manga made it very clear that Kakashi tied all of his reputation, Political power and good will into allowing Sasuke to be free. The novels double down on this and makes it very clear Kakashi will be blamed if Sasuke takes a step out of line. Sasuke is now rogue and blamed for helping murder Naruto the symbol of peace across the world. Same for Sakura, she is Sasukes wife, they won't allow her to be Hokage due to her love and connection to Sasuke.

I think shikamaru is a great choice for hokaga. We could get to see a strategist as a hokaga rather then a overpowered person, but the way shikamaru is presented does rub me in a wrong way. The smartest guy in the village not being able to realize that his memories have been tampered with. And also the fact that people where doubtful about kawaki being naruto's son but overtime accepted it. Tech can even overpower Naruto's hard work. Just look at Sasuke with his constantly low chakra. If he had the kote well problem solved, he could store all his battle jutsu while keeping his escape jutsu handy with his own reserves. He might have a bit of a learning curve since his one hand is frequently occupied with a sword, but ya he could spam indra arrows if he wanted.
i feel like its better that shikamaru is the better choice for hokage cuz otherwise who ever strong person take the position might become weaker with time in the office and its better to keep the stronger shinobi on active duty for them to grow stronger or at the very least not get weaker just like what you said happend to shikamaru in the novel

NarutoExplained brought a good point about kakashi and sakura not being even close to being considered for hokage because of their relation to sasuke who is now rogue, especially kakashi who was the one who pardoned sasuke's crimes during his tenure as hokage.
I think in this situation Shikamaru may be secretly the best choice at the moment. If you think about how insanely intelligent he is, he can organize and strategically use the stronger ninja far more effectively. If the strongest ninja was the hokage, they would be too overworked and stressed to fully utilize their power in a fight or emergency situation. Think about playing chess, would you want the queen running the show or rather have her on the board at full strength and ready to strike?

I doubt it'll be addressed but the writers could explain why Shikamaru was appointed. His proximity to the previous Hokage and his in-law relationship to the Kazekage is probably a strategic advantage that are additional perks to his incredible intelligence in all manners relevant to the Hokage position. It's possible that the behavior of Sarada and the actions of Sasuke might have caused aspersions to be cast upon Sakura that disqualified her for the role of Hokage and Kakashi could have turned the role down. I don't really care if it's explained or not. The focus of the story isn't on any of the kages but I think if the writers want to play around with the idea of someone like Danzo being a Hokage for a decent tenure then I think Shikamaru is the best vehicle to flesh out that idea. I think a dynamic of Shikamaru being a more Danzo-oriented Hokage with Konohamaru being his Hiruzen/Naruto-oriented assistant could be a nice inversion for them to play around with.

Also, me too. I would like to think there are greater political ramifications at play as to why Shikamaru had to be the next Hokage. Realistically speaking, that has to be a massive benefit to the Hidden Sand Village given that the wife of the Hogake is also the sister of the Kazekage. Yet, it has to be in Konoha's benefit, too. If Konoha has a weak Hokage and is also weak with the loss of Naruto, then it makes sense to have an immediate powerful ally in Gaara. Also, I'd imagine Gaara would, deep down anyway, be taking Naruto's "death" quite personally.

I've read a lot of comment of people commenting whether or not he was a good choice to fill the Hokage positon and literally never was Suna mention, which I think is stupid. I mean, Shikamaru IS one of the reasons why Konoha's alliance with Suna is so strong. Naruto too of course, but the fact is, Shikamaru literally married into the Kazekage's family, his wife is the ambassador between Suna and Konoha, hell in Gaara's book it was even mention that Shikadai could actually have a claim to the Kazakage position if he wanted it. I mean politicaly speaking, their family has to be one of the most influent in the the five countries alliance.
We probably won't know why he was the one to be appointed, but I really think he was one of the best choices.
In terms of strengh he probably isn't as strong as the other Kage but in terms of leadership, strategizing and politics, he is one of the best. Plus, Shikamaru potentially being a good fit for the Hokage role was mentioned on multiple occasions in Naruto. I think that's also important.
Also I don't think strengh should even matter at that point. Literally the only people that could actually fight their enemies right now are Boruto and well, literally their allies/ennemies. Even Naruto and Sasuke couldn't do much and they are the strongest.

Yes, it's crazy to think that Konoha has foreigners who have been naturalized as citizens, and it's even more wild to think that Shikadai has a claim to the position of Kazekage. That'd mean one of Konoha's family-held jutsus, Nara clan shadow binding, could also become a legacy in a foreign village. That's something in the Naruto series that the elders of all the villages were vehemently against. I admit, I could be wrong, but now that I think about it, I get the feeling Kishimoto didn't put a lot of forethought into the likely ramifications of such a pivotal narrative change.
For sure, would be excellent to learn how Shikamaru actually became Hokage as opposed to, for example, having Kakashi step back in. Heck, in retrospect we might have a Hokage trinity in terms of "personality roles" where Shikamaru is like a sensible Danzo, Konohamaru is like Hiruzen/Hashirama and Kakashi is like Jiraiya. Up until now, we've always seen the Fire Shadow and the Shadow of the Fire Shadow (the Hokage and the Shadow Hokage).
Although Shikamaru isn't the most powerful guy around in terms of physical and fighting abilities, as you pointed out, his leadership qualities and decision making skills are off the charts. This is also proven in how he married one of the most powerful kunoichi, Temari, and knows to stay on her good side. Wise man, indeed!

I understand the fanboying, I'm a "crazy" fangirl myself 🤣 especially when it comes to Shikamru. I will even admit when it comes to him I'm a little biased however I'm not biased to the point where I can't make an argument. As much as I always defend him, especially right now with everyone pretty much saying he sucks, even I can't agreee with everything he did. On the other hand I strongly believe there is nothing more important to him than his family and the protection of the village. I personally don't like comparing him to Danzo because honestly, to me Danzo was one of those characters who convinced himself he was doing everything for Konoha while in reality it was only for himself. There is a huge difference between them, Shikamaru would never sacrifice anyone for his own benefit.
I like the idea of Shikamaru having his own "Shadow Hokage", I guess Kakashi could be it. Didn't one of the authors say that he would get a bigger role (as in finally an appearence in the manga 😅) ? Maybe he could be investigating on what truly happened to Naruto and Hinata on Shikamaru's account. It's literally mentionned that they don't know what happened and if they didn't entirely forget how to write Shikamaru I really don't think he would satisfy himself with no answers considering the death of one of his closest friends.
About the whole thing with Suna, I honestly think the authors forgot or just didn't bother with the issue. Which is too bad since it could potentially be one of the most important and interesting thing if they forcused on it. You're right, in Gaara's book, the reason the elders wanted him to get married was precisely because they were afraid of Shikatema's kid possible influence in their country. In the anime it is also mention that Shikamaru is not very appreciated there because they pretty much don't think he deserves Temari because he's not prestigious enough. Honestly with Shikamaru as Hokage and his relations to Gaara and Temari I think there would be so much to do !!! Konoha is in need of strong allies now more then ever in my opinion so I really think if they focused a tiny bit on the political side of the manga it could add more to the story wich in my point a view lacks a lot. Unfortunatly I don't believe the authors will do anything with it, and I'm actually afraid Shikamaru will just end up being used as the one who willl be blame for everything. Call me crazy but the Nara-Sand family is one of the most interesting thing to me, there's literally so much that could be done with them. Shikamaru and Temari didn't exactly have it easy when they decided to get married, it would be cool to know more about that. Also I would love more interactions between them, I'm sorry but I still can't get over the fact that Temari didn't even make an appearance when Shikadai was threatedned with a freaking bomb around his neck to get to Shikamaru !!! I mean, I know the authors don't care much about the adult female characters but come on, she's his mother !!! How come she wasn't with him ?! Also, let's be real, if any kid in Boruto is going to have influence it'll be Shikadai. I think they made him the Hokage because they needed someone who has proven he can fully detach from other characters and make the logical choice. They wanted someone who would put the full might of the village against Boruto. The needed brain washed villain who has proven he was willing to kill Kiwake (now Boruto) in the past. Everyone has already been fine hating Shikamaru for it, but nobody is ready to see Sakura or Kakashi as the villain.

Ino Shika Cho is basically the only thing that can lead the village strong enough at this point on its own, and having the strategist member calling the shots for the entire village as well as who does the actual Hokage duties behind the scenes makes the most sense. The hokage has sort of had the expectation to be the ultimate defense, but countless times they fall short or “fail” just for another member (and in some cases a Genin) of the village to succeed. Give the dude a break, he’s likely the best candidate

Shikamaru is the only guy that can immobilize Eida since his jutsu doesnt harm her, so there is a strong strategy point towards Shikamaru, even tho he was captivated by charm he can still use it to immobilize her for some time, but yeah he is the weakest of all hokage i agree with that
Codes claw marks aren’t deadly it’s just like the FTG seals. But somehow when he tried to use them on daemon they were still reflected. Could be bad writing but could also mean daemon can reflect anything not just lethal attacks
It’s funny you say “captivated by charm” because I truly wonder how much Shikamaru is unaware, or better said, aware. Remember when everyone was put under genjutsu during the chunin exams and Kakashi asks Sakura to release him and he had just been faking it the whole time.

He doesn’t need to be hokage to do that and even if he did it wouldn’t work. There’s other non lethal jutsu. Thats like saying Genjutsu should work since it isn’t really a physical attack. You could just genjutsu paralyze her or deamon since it isn’t actually meant to hurt them.

I think it’s unfair to assume Shikamaru has gotten weaker or stayed exactly the same during the time skip. It’s entirely possible that Shikamaru, knowing the precedent of the role he was having to step into, underwent some kind of highly specialized training to prepare himself to step up to the plate. It’s highly unlikely this kind of training would make him relevant to the Naruto or the otsosuki but him becoming as strong as the other Kage or even like Tsunade level is possible. As a huge fan of the character I hope this is the direction that is taken

I have a number of issues with Shikamaru being Hokage:
1. We've been told upteen times that strength is not enough to be a Jonin/Hokage in itself. Yet Shikamaru (and the Naras in general) are apparently able to advance largely based off of (1) squad chemistry with the same trio and (2) overall intelligence. In fact, this trope has already been done in Boruto with Shikadai being the first one promoted. At some point there needs to be a minimum expectation that one's actual combat prowess should be able to keep up with the minimum level of knowledge required and that an individual should be able to function outside of the same 3 clan squad (there's no guarantee that an Akimicha and Yamanaka will be available every time Shikamaru is in a combat situation). Do we see any real attempt by Shikamaru to learn a more diverse array of jutsu or otherwise become more well-rounded in combat? Not really (or at least we have no evidence of this so far).

Shikamaru is the best choice for 2 reasons.
1. It all goes back to what his dad said during the retrieval arc. “Your friends will still go on missions, what if they don’t come back because you’re not there.”
2. Asuma’s last words. “Protect the king”

The power levels are becoming so ridiculous that very few people by themselves have the ability to be relevant, battle-wise. That's exactly why the winning strategy here is not and never will be "go Baryon mode and beat the shit out of someone until they're dead" or "blast them with powerful jutsu until they disintegrate." It's very clear that strategy is going to be needed. Beyond strategy, nuanced analysis is going to play a huge role. He is literally their best hope.

i think the best way for Shikamaru to shine combat wise is to have Ino and Chouji as his bodyguards. i feel so bad for him, because as you've mentioned, he doesn't have a lot battle avaliable techniques that dont require some sort of set up. While it’s not a direct connection Shikamaru’s sensei was Asuma Sarutobi who was the son of the 3rd Hokage. The Sarutobi’s are somewhat of a big name in Konoha so he at least has a connection to the previous Hokage’s even if it’s the loosest of strings

Asuma also said in his deathbed (at least in the anime) that Shikamaru had what it took to become hokage, though he wouldn’t want the job lol

I would think that Kakashi would've replaced Naruto like Hiruzen replaced Minato but i guess Kakashi is not willing to bear that burden anymore. However, given the circumstances Shikamaru would be a good choice since he knows the current issues Konoha is facing and his strength actually lies in his intelligence where he has shown to be able to out strategize those who are stronger than him.

Being deserving of the role and being capable are different. The kind of person Shikamaru is does make him deserving for sure. His power level being really low now and even fairly low for his entire life though… kinda makes him a bad candidate for Hokage hypothetically. That said, you’ve talk repeatedly about how Hokage don’t do as much because they’re busy pushing papers and making deals which is something he excels at which his shadow Hokage and fellow Konoha shinobi can do the actual footwork.
Sakura being Hokage would be a nice touch considering this would mean that Sarada's rebellion would be pointed at her own mother. She would be torn between her parents - Sasuke who was never there but trusted her when it counts, and Sakura, the one who was always there but refuse to see your point of view when you really need them the most. That would be much much more interesting to watch develop.

I don't have issues with Shikamaru being Hokage. The more pressure Shikamaru is put under, the stronger he becomes- that's his character; like his WHOLE character. I also think the destruction of Konoha is classic Kishimoto misdirection. Also, this leaves Gaara and Darui as the strongest Kage barring Shikamaru getting a timeskip based glow-up to his capabilities- which are both the Kage most likely to be reasonable with, or even defend him. While I do think Shikamaru gets overhyped, I don't think it's a bad choice for him to be the village's leader.
In reality, Shikamaru being at the helm makes the most sense so the strongest shinobi in the village are not bogged down by diplomatic duties like naruto always was. People are just miffed because Naruto-verse already set a president of Hokage being the strongest of the Kage in almost all era. In a practical point of view, it makes absolute sense for him to be the Hokage. I'll put down binding kages and threatening to kill as poor writing as someone diplomatic with 200+ IQ would not do that. That's something a typical hothead will do and completely out of character for Shikamaru. I can even see adult Sauske threatening as he's just as cold as Shikamaru and has blood on his hands, he has the will to make hard choices and ultimately cares about results. It made absolutely no sense for a 200+ IQ tactician like Shikamaru to do this and Naruto made to apologize for his actions as if Shikamarua kid who doesn't know any better. Frankly, I feel that was disrespectful to his character.
Maybe Orochimaru, it would be fun to have him in the story again, hes a sannin, functionally immortal and has immense scientific resources, he also recieved a full pardon after the war, and i think he'd bring an interesting dynamic. Only thing is he hasn't been involved in the plot since the Mitsuki arc and probably doesn't know a lot about whats recently taken place.

Nick, Shikamaru does kinda line up with how a hokage is elected since his sensei Asuma is the son of the 3rd hokage and the 3rd hokage was trained by the first and second hokage plus he comes from one of the prestigious clans of konoha. He might not be related to any of the hokage but he was trained by the son of the hokage which puts him in the same category as Minato and Kakashi.
He is asuma's disciple and naruto's adviser. He's a hard nose ninja that has the will of fire just as much as the second hokage. Him being hokage is like having a war general becoming president.

Jiraiya turned down the Hokage post multiple times. Tsunade was not the first choice after Hiruzen or Minato.

I don't think them choosing Tsunade was a matter of "settling" it's just that Jiraiya was more accessible at the time. They are a three way deadlock implying that they are about equal, Snake > Toad > Slug > Snake etc.

I was disappointed it’s not Konahamaru the 8th hokage. Since episode 2 in OG Naruto there was links that Konahamaru would be the hokage after Naruto and his progress was amazing. I’m really not taking Boruto as serious tbf and to me everything finished with Naruto becoming Hokage.
Well technically Shikamaru is related to the Hokage line because he was trained by Asuma who is from the Guardian Shinobi 12 and son of the Former 3rd Hokage Hiruzen. So now that I think about it his pedigree is there and it makes sense combined with what he did in the 4th Great Ninja War, I can see why he was elected.

Ōnoki lived through the 1st, 2nd and 4th kage reign. He is quite litterly built different.
Ōnoki is about 100 years old and practically carried the 5 Kage vs Madera.

With Shikamaru as hokage, Konoha could be a strong by group village than strong by individuous. Like chess, the King isn't the strongest, but its power comes by coordenating the power of those stronger tham him.

I still believe that Shikamaru deserves to be the 8th hokage. I understand that strength is needed to save the entire konoha, but with his intelligence, he was able to win battles. Mind is more powerful than strength. Shikamaru thinks hundred times ahead before the enemy can give a final blow. He just needs people to help him execute his tactics. We don’t know yet with that three years he secretly has discovered a power that made him a deserving hokage. It’s time to see someone outside the Godly predecessors to take the mantle of a hokage. 😊

Couldn't Shikamaru have struggled to snap the tree because he's exhausted from holding 5 kage in place against their will? Even holding 2 against their will has got to be draining, and we see Shikamaru's chakra drains quickly when controlling more people or stronger ones. I think that could explain why he failed to pull off such a simple feat shortly afterwards
Shikamaru plans. strategizes and makes decisions while everyone else effectively turns into soldiers. This is the case for empires in the real world as well. That’s why he’s the best candidate as someone like Kakashi are more useful on the battlefield as some sort of general or commander. Having Shikamaru killed in war against the Osutzuki isn’t utilizing his skill properly, his brain is a valuable asset not his combat capabilities.

Shikamaru is one of my favorite characters earlier in naruto but after the hidan/kakuzu arc, my interest on his character kinda gets lower and lower as the story progressed.

I get why they did it, but they literally could have pulled a Hiruzen and went backwards and have Kakashi be Hokage again.
They never could be because of Sasuke.
Shippuden did a shit job of adapting it but the Naruto manga made it very clear that Kakashi tied all of his reputation, Political power and good will into allowing Sasuke to be free.
The novels double down on this and makes it very clear Kakashi will be blamed if Sasuke takes a step out of line.
Sasuke is now rogue and blamed for helping murder Naruto the symbol of peace across the world.
Same for Sakura, she is Sasukes wife, they won't allow her to be Hokage due to her love and connection to Sasuke.

I think shikamaru is a great choice for hokaga. We could get to see a strategist as a hokaga rather then a overpowered person, but the way shikamaru is presented does rub me in a wrong way. The smartest guy in the village not being able to realize that his memories have been tampered with. And also the fact that people where doubtful about kawaki being naruto's son but overtime accepted it. So considering how smart shikamaru is he should have figured is out in pre-timeskip but now he is portrait as more of an obstacle than an allie

Tech can even overpower Naruto's hard work. Just look at Sasuke with his constantly low chakra. If he had the kote well problem solved, he could store all his battle jutsu while keeping his escape jutsu handy with his own reserves. He might have a bit of a learning curve since his one hand is frequently occupied with a sword, but ya he could spam indra arrows if he wanted.

If you think about how insanely intelligent he is, he can organize and strategically use the stronger ninja far more effectively.
