I don’t know what your military life was like as far as rotations, and stations, etc. However, I would argue that my personality drew me to the military for the variety, and the exposure to other places and people. The moves, and adapting to new people and places reinforced that desire, because I had good experiences. Having had that lifestyle reinforced as a good thing in my mind, it may have forever put me on that path toward being a perpetual Rover. The happiest I’ve ever been, is when I could pack up in four hours and go anywhere in the world, and it’s been always in the back of my mind. I feel unnatural being in one place for too long. My time between the military and retirement has been like being in a waiting room at the Dentist. Not too bad, but not where I want to be.
I lived in Pattaya but preferred to live up north, but there were times I felt isolated & lonely, also meeting genuine friends is difficult, I like the concept of moving around to different places
This is a mistake many guys make. Allowing your location to be dictated by the location of a woman. You then end up in a province with no one to speak to, and nothing to do with limited facilities. Sounds like you didn’t mind that . But living in small places also invalidates your location when the relationship doesn’t work out. In my opinion, the best strategy is to find a city that has everything you want in terms of facilities, proximity to a beach or whatever. Then find a girl in that location. If it doesn’t work out you can find another girl in the same city. I heard Chiang Mai isn’t good due to the 3 month crop burning with terrible air quality so better avoid it at least in that period. If you want to move around the world, maybe just consider a rental girl in each place with a monthly fee then no breakups to consider. I considered the Philippines but apart from language I think it has so many negatives that it would drive me crazy. But it’s an experience if you like moving around. With Colombia I heard there are organized gangs behind some of the attractive girls especially on line. They suck you in and extort money from you, whereas at least in Thailand and the Philippines is just scammers without violence. And you are only scammed if foolish enough to pay up. My first adventure will be Bangkok which I have been to several times. Lots of facilities and easy to get to beach locations, and lots of women to choose from and XPATS and good medical facilities, dentists and so on. And not that expensive either for a one bed condo with pool and gym. Like you said, no reason to leave unless something happens. But in a large city no need to move due to relationship problems. Enjoy your adventure in the Philippines. Some guys have got tired of DUMA and moved to BACOLOD and I was considering moving there but opted for BANGKOK in the end as I already feel comfortable there and don’t want to exit the U.K. for a completely strange place. I need a period of adjustment at least.
My Bro is Columbia, he just got in a situation with a lady where he was "kidnapped" and force to pay around 1500 usd to get his phone and get the f out of there.
@ Yes unfortunately it does have this gangster feel about it and I would be on edge the whole time. It’s a pity as the girls are very attractive. Some Mexican resorts have been ruined by gangs too, like Acapulco.
Other than English, I think Thailand beats Ph comfortably on every level. The food, safety, and cleanliness are the factors for me. (I've been to Thailand 8 times and Ph 4 times). Each to their own.
The 'challenges' with developing countries is eventually you get tired of a particular countries ways and rules, or lack of. So it plays to move around, just for your own sanity.
I feel its time to try another place to live rather than here in the Philippines. The problem is I’m a husband and a father now so I’m not willing to leave them obviously as any good husband or father. I had moved from Thailand prior to coming here. My wife wants to try moving to Vietnam with our boys so maybe my desire to move may materialize after all. My question for you is would you or could you take your GF with you? That, in my opinion, would be a win win. A Filipina GF in Thailand. I’m not so sure how the Philippines passport would hold up in terms of visa free or 30 or 60 day stays etc…. Always an interesting video…. Take care
The trouble with bringing Ellen to Thailand longer term would be her visa status, basically she would need to work. Short term for a holiday is not a problem (30 days on arrival) but longer term would be an issue. She is too young for a retirement visa which is what I would get, we're not married so she can't de my dependant on my retirement visa (at least that's the way I understand it) So she would need employment to get a work visa, that's why I want her to consider teaching English, if she took a teaching job it would solve any visa issues. The other option would be an eductaion visa, if she enrolled with a language school to learn Thai etc However, Thailand is alo easier in terms of long stay options than Vietnam is, so you may have some issues moving there but vest of luck with whatever you decide 👍
Curious where you lived in Phetchbun. Was it "Ban Pak Duk" in the city area? I can't find a Ban Pak Phu. There's also a Ban Pak Pong which is extremely small. EDIT: you gave more information! You're reading my mind. 500/night. Looks like a great deal. Never been to that area but I want to visit one day.
You won't find it on Google Maps I'm afraid not in English, it's too small. But if you Google Homelands resort, Phetchabun, on the opposite side of the highway is Rural Road 2015 I used to live a couple of clicks along there 👍

I'm new to this channel so bare with me. Probably already mentioned somewhere but, the Philippines wins hands down if you want your UK state pension to increase by at least 2.5% each year. Do the sums on a spreadsheet. You'll be shocked how much you lose over the years if your pension increase is frozen in Thailand
I would like to visit more Islands here even in the US only half dozen states I spent much time in and liked all of them but NC where I grew up was always home
Chiang Mai is toast in my opinion. There's lots to like there but it's totally overrun and quality of life has been going down for years due to traffic congestion and tourists totally dominating certain areas. Lots of goodies in the city but getting to them is painful. The local northern culture has been mostly stomped out too not only because of tourists but Thais from other regions like Bangkok moving there. I moved up to the mountains and only come down when I want to now which is much better. Id say explore any number of other small cities in the north before you consider CM.
Several topics to unpack here. Latin America is the one place I want to visit. However how many Americans and 51st staters (Sorry Canadians) make the arduous trek to SE Asia when they can just hop down to Latin America? Brent from Oklahoma knows the scene in Mexico yet he’s flying back to PH. Next the subject of Steak….omg….in 3 weeks in PH do you think I could find a steak? You need to be in the know and luckily for you Ray knows the lay of the land up there in Cebu. I stayed in IT park round the corner but I didn’t know.
Sorry to hear about your steak issues and a little surprised to be honest. We only had steak the one night but we did see steak options on a few of the menus we looked at while were in Cebu. Maybe the steak situation has improved since you were there 🤔 But if you're there again I can highly recommend the steak at Atmosphere 👍
I think the moment a guy moves to his girlfriends village or town the relationship is doomed. Sooner or later you will get sick of the province lifestyle. Living in an expat place is the best for your life. Don't be soft and live where your girlfriend is most comfortable. She has to compromise too.
Having your wife's/girlfriend's family up backside every 5 minutes is enough to drive a grown man insane. Rookie mistake. So many men who build house there end up breaking up and moving away leaving the house behind.
Place is just a place. You have a lovely gf there, and you'd consider dumping her to move on? It looks like you hit paydirt with her, if I were you I'd include her in your future plans. BTW I'm 66 and leaving this place because of the health care.... and I'm bored with beaches, tropical weather and not being able to build stuff (with Lowes and Home Depot) and repair vehicles (NAPA Auto Parts and Auto Zone) and have long road trips around North America. Been here done this. Love your channel - give us your Shepard's Pie recipe sometime huh?
I heard that Thailand has the equivalent of a Home depot? Got any clue about that? Home Depot is defiantly something that will be missed if you are crafty.
You are obviously staying in the Philippines because of your girlfriend. If you do leave and go somewhere else she might be happy to go with you but you say she has a good job there and family so it might end up being a choice between her and living somewhere else. Another good interesting video
For the record I said from day 1, I would stay in the Philippines for a minimum of 2 years, regardless of how good or bad it was. If I hated a place I would move to another island. I was clear on the point in my first youtube video with Mark Thornton and it's never changed. So, if I'm still here after September this year it might be fair comment to say "obviously' I'm staying here for Ellen because after that point it would be the case but I tell you now, if Ellen and I split up tomorrow I would still stay in the Philippines until September. Anyway, thanks for watching, it's much appreciated. Be lucky 👍
