Her face and body were really her strong points....she wasn't as strong on the runway like Linda, Christy, and Naomi, but she killed it commercially with tv & print ads, cosmetic campaigns, she was the most successful of them all.

Big companies used her to sell products! She married a guy ( Rande Gerber) who did nightspots in California! Her marriage to Richard Gere was short. Two kids with Rande Gerber!
I was just thinking this same thing. She looked kind of bland on the runway but she was so beautiful and photographed so well and so it made her a successful model commercially.

I remember Supermodels and even tho i was and still am not into fashion the top supermodels were like everywhere. You'd see them around, all over even if your not into that world(father figure song with George Michael. Commercials, etc). You've heard and knew of them regardless.

However, I would say still, if you can afford it, buy all organic anyway because I think only a few items may be fake organic, but if the rest of your diet IS organic then whatever you are eating that is good for you can help your immune system which will in turn help to fight off the chemicals that you consumed from the "Fake organic" food.

To be fair, I don't think that runway was her thing, and most of the shows that are shown here are American designers, she wasn't European high fashion. I don't mean that as a put down, I just want to remind all the people that are criticizing her that she was a very successful model, she had an accessible beauty that the other super models didn't necessarily have and she was everywhere in the 90's - ads, cosmetics, magazines, TV host, even a movie. I'm gay and Linda E was my favourite model in the 90s - on the other hand, my straight cousins could barely identify any of the other supermodels yet they all knew who Cindy was! Many of the other super models may have been at the pinnacle of high fashion but we forget, Cindy had a much broader appeal and she was a household name.

Cindy Linda Claudia Christy and Karen were light years ahead of Naomi the "queen" of the Catwalk in (Coin) for sure. It's sad folk don't realize the money and instant branding was off the Catwalk and when Cindy realized her Brand could be so much more her focus obviously went elsewhere too. She also became a role model for Models with personal banding. Ive heard Tyra banks for example, reference Cindy early as a role model for personal branding off the runway.

I absolutely concur. She was definitely not suited for runway and dare I say it, a different body shape than the others (nothing wrong just it's there). She is so gorgeous and so suited for print and film. I LOVE her workouts. Linda has always been my fave as well. She's just "it". That's so true about Cindy...all the boys at school were in love with her. They turned up their noses to the photos in Vogue or Bazaar. Yes, she was definitely accessible...still is :)

Balmain, Hermes, and Escada used her for their ad campaigns. So yes, she was considered high fashion and in-demand in Europe.
Linda was the chameleon and Cindy was the most diversified. Cindy was one of the few fashion models who were successful at both prestige work and commercial/mainstream campaigns. She worked for top designers and was also the spokesperson for Revlon, Pepsi, and Omega,. She hosted her fashion-themed show on MTV. She sold her own exercise videos. She was in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue. She even posed for Playboy (which helped her career, though she was warned not to do it by the fashion industry). She expanded what top models could achieve and other models copied her. Claudia later did exercise videos. Christy was a fashion correspondent for Entertainment Tonight. Stephanie Seymour and Elle Macpherson later posed for Playboy.
At the height of her career, it was mentioned several times by industry people that she had a broad appeal because she was a brunette who was ethnically ambiguous (a popular trend of the time). In photos, with the right styling and makeup, she could look Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Middle Eastern, South American, etc. Therefore, she seemed relatable to many different people. I was a teenager during Cindy's prime and paid close attention to 90s fashion and models. Unlike some of the opinions I've read here, I'm not basing mine solely on impressions and assumptions of the past.
She is more popular because she was a commercial model and also because she is american. Being more famous does not mean being better.

She could do all the moves required of 90s models - the smooth turns, the little kick of the foot at the end of a turn, the confident stance and expression, etc. She had a relaxed way of moving, as Sorek already wrote here.. She just wasn't dramatic on the runway like Naomi or Yasmeen. And she was a hundred times better than the childish stomping by today's nepotism/instagram "models".
You want to see bad walks from Cindy's time? Look at Claudia Schiffer's amateur walk at the beginning of her career. Look at Kristen McMenamy's awkward, graceless movement.

Well she was walking like a normal woman. Everyone loved her and still do today because well she was just natural. The hair the make up. She is one of those rare people on earth like Elizabeth Taylor that were born stunningly beautiful. Like a pearl or a diamond a lotus flower. I adore her. Cindy was wonderful, love her. She sparkled and looked alive, not like a zombie. She had a wonderful presence, gave life to the garments but didn't overshadow them. Her walk was more natural, less dramatic for the taste of some, but she drew attention to the couture, everyone took notice of what she was wearing, which is the purpose of runway shows. Great attitude off the runway too, never a diva.
Her catwalk wasn't marvelous but her face and charisma were everything... 1:25 that is an iconic look of her...

If you´re used to Yasmeen Ghauri and Naomi Campbell, Cindy´s walk seems lacklustre in comparison. However, her aura makes up for it. It´s SO refreshing to see how healthy slim the models were back then. You can see clear muscle tone. It´s so beautiful! I remember watching "A day with Alessandra Ambrosio" here on UA-cam and without extensions and all that prep, her hair looked brittle and sparse. People seem to forget, that when you´re underweight, the first 2 things to go is your healthy skin and hair! They cover all that in the fashion industry, but even with makeup, the models don´t have that healthy glow and "power" that these models from back in the day used to have. Of course, imagine being constantly sick and hungry...how are you going to bounce around and glow with health? I feel like the fashion industry absolutely hates women or has a problem with the way a healthy woman is. They like the androgynous look that´s neither here nor there. I miss the days when a woman could be a WOMAN on the catwalk. What would they do if we started liking ourselves the way we are? They´d go out of business, LOL!
Cindy Crawford will continue to be the standard by which all models ( pass, current, and future) are held too. Major worldwide brand names seek contracts with her because they wanted the BEST. Besides being drop dead stunningly beautiful, she was the first model to proof that models could be smart, have a 4.0 GPA, started college on a full scholarship, be the most professional in conduct and how she spoke in representing herself and their clothes / products.
While I love a great catwalk walker, Cindy didn't need an over exaggerated walk to be noticed or get booked. Designers loved that she is wearing the clothes and she lets them be the "star".
I was lucky enough to meet Cindy in person and can say this, videos and pictures will never do her justice. Seeing her in person will literally take your breathe away, you can't look away!!

You do know that walking is just one of many categories a super model has to be good at? Yes, her walk seems a bit boring compared to other legendary super models BUT she absolutely excelled in photos, body shape, stunningly beautiful face, interviews, comercials, hosting, intellect and general positive public appearance. God! I'm in love with her figure. She is naturally broad-framed, it can clearly be seen from the width of her shoulders, her wrist and everything and that is exactly what is lovable. Inspite of not falling into the typical model frame and having a very average walk, she reached the pinnacle. It wasnt due to nepotism, but her charisma, her glamour, her relatable looks. She had a very universal look, someone who could be moulded to appear different through lighting and make up, not many people have that appeal. But her daughter has not inherited that broad frame.

During the 1990s, there was more variety in models. They were not cookie-cutter. None of the top 20 or so models looked like clones. There was clear individuality and ethnic diversity. A number of them had mixed ancestry. It was the same with body shapes. Cindy was athletic. Linda was slim. Claudia was busty. Christy had hips. Naomi had beautiful toned thighs. Until Kate Moss and the waif trend was promoted (the fashion industry's strategy to end the power of the glamazon supermodel phenomenon), models didn't look like teenagers.
I feel the comments here need some clarification: yes, many models were slim when they start out at 15 or 16-years-old, but as they develop natural womanly attributes going into their 20s, they are encouraged by the industry to minimize them by starving or overexercising (which eliminate healthy levels of subcutaneious fat) so they can fit into sample size 0-2 clothes. The industry wants today's models to look like lanky adolescent girls, not grown women. But who are the ones who can afford to buy designer clothes? Grown women.
This idea by some commenters that they are ALL naturally thin is false. Many retired top models have talked about eating very little or taking up smoking (an appetite suppressant) to stay very thin and thus, get work. Coco Rocha, who is naturally slim already, once said that her employers pressured her to get the current look of the season: anorexic. It's a twisted industry.

@In Dreams Her walk is kinda rough and not so elegant or graceful. I was surprised by that because she was such a huge supermodel. Usually supermodels offer the "full package" in terms of ad campaigns, runway, etc.

Once a model gets a thumbs up by a leading member of the industry, other people hire her. In some early photos, she was styled to look like Gia.
The same thing happened with Claudia Schiffer, whose career was greatly helped by her superficial resemblance to Brigitte Bardot. I'm glad Cindy has acknowledged that looking like Gia helped her get her start.

In 1986, Gia was dead and Cindy was entering the big leagues by leaving Chicago and moving to New York City. Cindy had the same dark sultry looks as Gia and the fashion industry wanted more of that. It was a nice contrast to all the blue-eyed blondes dominating the field during the 70s and 80s. She was smart enough to avoid the pitfalls of fame (partying too much, drinking, and drugging). But then, Cindy was emotionally healthy compared to Gia when she entered her cutthroat profession. Fame and wealth can easily intensify the weaknesses you already had when you were anonymous.
Cindy was a true professional: always on time, reliable, pleasant to work with, no diva antics. It's no surprise why she had longevity.
