7 year ownership on C5 convertible, originally 63,000 miles and now has 140,000, it’s well loved and definitely not a garage queen, while I have spent on 2 major repairs I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Not even for another C5 corvette I’m a firm believer cars have souls

I joined the Vette team and I wonder what were the two major things you talked about? I need to know what to expect at worse. From what I read so far, nothing, all pleasure from a lot of sources but what do u say?

@@LC-nh8ig keep in mind these cars are old and with them sitting around not being driven a lot you may need to replace the plastics like coolant reservoir, old hoses, spark plugs, My first repair was an oil leak (intake manifold gasket) that would have been 4,000$ because half the transmission needed to come out but I knew a guy who did it for 1,200$ and the second since it’s a convertible someone ripped the roof with a knife and was was on top of the roof and caved in the roof because the thief was heavy which needed to be all replaced which was 5,000$ insurance didn’t want to cover it. Not the cars fault but I would say look at the CARFAX and consider replacing the original plastics since mine was all original. Other then that the car has been great I’ve even driven it in Chicago winter and during the polar vortex when it was -50 degrees

Have 2004 C5 corvette, brought it in 2021. Had 86,000 miles on it, now has 96,112 miles on it. Some things I’ve done have been preventative maintenance, but certainly had some issues. The car is ultimately a money pit and that’s fine because I love my car!

I've got an '05 C6 that I've had for nearly 4 years, and I can say repair costs have been zero. It did strand me in a Lowes parking lot when the starter was turning, but not engaging... Triple A'd it back home only to find out that it wasn't a bad starter, just guessing whoever replaced that one didn't torque down the bolts and they backed out just enough to prevent engagement... no cost, just some time & frustration.
As far as maintenance, the 9-year-old dry rotted tires needed replaced as soon as it came home... that was an ouch, but it was known ahead of time. Other than that, been fluid changes and no other issues whatsoever... now I'm knocking on wood. Only thing I'm currently dreading is hearing the torque tube start to grind.
As far as upgrades, it pretty much had everything already done that most 'Vette owners would do, minus the engine work. It already had an intake/exhaust, I just took it the next step with cam & heads, and did the harmonic balancer as a "while you're in there" item.

1999 C5 here, 10 year ownership. Was stranded at grocery store with broken shifter cable on the automatic transmission. Recently replaced oil pressure sensor, gauge was stuck on 80 psi. Don’t drive much. Waiting for dreaded balancer and ABS sensor to break but so far so good. Bought with 83K, now has 90K miles.

Sorry to hear about your shifter cable, had that happen to me (luckily I was home) my mechanic, who specializes in Corvettes suggest it should really be changed every 3 years no matter what. Apparently this is a problem on all versions of the Corvette.

Here’s my story ! Bought a C5 2004 with 7600 miles on it . Before it hit 8000 miles my repair cost was already $ 2200.00 dollars . The primary fuel pump quit 200 miles from home. That was in 2012. It’s now 2024 and I’m going to sell it. I’m afraid of another pump plus the harmonic balancer plus possible torque tube issues. I think I’ll go back to an older car for fun. I can work on them. The C5 drive train is a joke along with no access to the fuel pump without removing the entire rear suspension to remove the fuel tank to access the pump. It’s a nice car with some of the dumbest engineering GM has ever done !!! The car has never been abused !

Hi there...I own a 1999 C5...I've owned mine for 3 years now and I drive mine from around April until Oct. Like you...I live in a cold climate. I live in the mid-west. So....with that said. This is not my daily except for 6 months out of the year. The only real major issue I've had so far is that the idiots who owned it before me added roll bars and the kind that are more for looks than anything and drilled them into both gas tanks. So, I had to buy two new gas tanks and have them put in. That's it so far. Next year I might need to fix the actuator for the air conditioner on the driver's side...which I hear is costly so I'm not looking forward to that. I love her. I've added fun things to her but I don't consider that a part of repair costs. I have put around 10,000 miles on and she's sitting at around 90,000 miles.

Rebuilt headlight motors, new serpentine belt, brakes, shocks, rotors tires, fluids, 2 air conditioning actuators (the doorman unit failed in a year), replaced DRL lenses, air filters, replaced windshield wiper motor, water pump, shifter cable and replaced the two rear seals where the tranny connects to the rear differential. For a 31 year old car that I maintain with the intention to occasionally daily .... indefinitely .... this isn't much, IMO.

Drivers side mirror spring snapped very expensive estimate for repairs. DIY with JB plastic weld. Starter went bad. Clutch Master Cylinder bad. Tailpipe fell off. Had it welded. A/C cold except drivers vent. Repair was expensive. New battery AGM. Emergency brake doesn’t hold. Waiting to do rear brakes. Terrible design making this fix $without doing great brakes. Both seats move forward when harder than normal braking. I am not a mechanic so most work out. R U thinking I hate her. Absolutely not. She’s mint. Love it but they have Gremlins!!

Got my 125k mile 01 C5 Z for 13.5K and am 27k deep all parts no labor 😂. At 144k miles now and basically runs like a brand new car with all that bread put into it. Only 3k - 3.5 ish of that was mods, rest all maintenance more or less. Ive basically rebuilt the whole car besides trans, full top end engine rebuild, cooling system, ignition system, fuel system, mounts, full clutch system upgrade, and tons I’ve forgotten. What’s funny is I don’t regret a dollar though. I’ve learned not only so much about cars in general from doing all the work myself but I learned how to rebuild an engine in my driveway, I’d say that’s priceless stuff for a 20 yr old kid like me now 21 since the rebuild. I’ve bumped the number up to 32k though, got some go fast goodies that’ll bump it to around 500 hp n/a and get me even more tickets woohoo. Handles like a beast too, left some noob in the dust driving a ‘19 gt3rs in the canyons, driver mod is real haha.

Forgot to mention the reason for the hefty bills is im a terrible owner. The poor ls6 screams to 6500 rpm couple dozen times a week for the past two years with no breaks and sees almost 80 miles of aggressive mountain roads a week now, so I’d say it’s held up to my abuse pretty damn well considering I turn it’s oil black in a thousand miles. anytime I think it’s a unreliable money pit, I remind myself some German trash from the same era wouldn’t last 4 days in my hands without totaling itself, so I go back to happily fixing it whenever something happens 😁
