- When the woodworker Geppetto (Christian Rub) sees a falling star, he wishes that the puppet he just finished, Pinocchio (Dickie Jones), could become a real boy. In the night, the Blue Fairy (Evelyn Venable) grants Geppetto's wish and asks Jiminy Cricket (Cliff Edwards) to serve as the wooden boy's conscience. But the naive and trusting Pinocchio falls into the clutches of the wicked Honest John (Walter Catlett), who leads him astray to the sinful Pleasure Island.

When you think about it, Pinocchio and Lampwick transforming last is because they had more sense of good in them.
Pinocchio was obviously just innocently naive, while Lampwick had a sense of friendship to an obviously wooden boy of all people despite his delinquency
That’s indeed why they transformed last. ( I read up on it) The least bad kids turned into donkeys last. I’m thinking the boys in ( donkey 🫏 form) that could still talk, might not have been as bad as the boys who completely turned into donkeys and couldn’t talk. If you looked at Alexander ( early on) he was well dressed and seemed truly frightened. I bet some of those boys probably thought “ Oh! I’m gonna ride rides, eat some hot dogs 🌭 and candy and popcorn 🍿 and then go home!” Not all of them were truly bad

The look on Pinocchio's face when he see's Lampwich grow donkey ears and a tail, the look on his face as he pushes the beer and throws away the cigar he looks like he's thinking-"What the hell is in this stuff?"
Pinocchio would have done the same pushing away yet another of the things that caused the donkey transformation (even though it’s not in the scene) - the junk food (one of two things given to the boys by that clown barker). The other thing the clown barker gave the boys, that caused the donkey transformation, was the vandalism, in the ‘model home open for destruction’. The fifth thing that caused the donkey transformation was the statue that looked and sounded like Popeye, in the Rough House (given that that’s where the boys were allowed to fight).
The beer definitely would have caused the donkey transformation, as would have those Cuban cigars (I bet the ones Pinocchio and Lampwick were seen smoking, in the pool hall, were the same ones thrown by those wooden Native American statues, in the Tobacco Row), as both are age restricted products (even if Cuban cigars aren’t as bad as cigarettes). Basically anything that was *bad* to do is what caused the donkey transformation. Everyone knows that junk food (again, one of the two things the clown barker gave the boys) is food that one shouldn’t *make a habit* of eating, hence was one of the five things that caused the donkey transformation.

Which is why this was aimed at kids so that they only see this as funny and not tragic like an adult's view. Brothers Grimm, what dark tales.
This scene traumatized me as a kid.
Apparently Disney planned an extended chase scene after Pleasure Island where the Coachman would chase Pinocchio back to land and Honest John and Gideon would try to misdirect him so they could catch him themselves and claim a reward, and then they'd all run smack into the police.
It would have been nice to see some villains get punished, but that scene would have made the final face-off with Monstro feel a lot less powerful.
I think walt disney has been underestimated as the guy who only brings happy ending fairy tales.
This scene in pinnochio is something I would not even wish on my worst enemies!

Pleasure island is the ultimate example of a gold plated /Sugar coated place that may seem fun and highly Irresistable but later proves to really be a horrible trap and highly dangerous place.
The fact that the only way Pinocchio and Jiminy could deal with this situation by escaping tells me that Pleasure Island has been cursed with evil magic too dangerous to even describe. It really doesn't help that although the magic stops when off the island, any change it causes is irreversible; like a freaking scar that will never go away
I really can't help but wonder how the Island got cursed in first place, and if there are other places in the world of Pinocchio like it :/
Lampwick learned a valuable lesson way too late and that's when you land on Pleasure Island and you misbehave and you drink and smoke then you turn into an ass!
It might've been the drinks or food that turned em into donkeys but who knows

You're right. Pleasure island is cursed with evil black magic. And the coachman is behind everything. He finds bad disobedient boys who hate following rules and play hooky from school and takes them to a place where they can eat and do and smoke whatever they please. And when they're all worn out from making Jackasses of themselves that's when the evil spell kicks in. Turning those boys into Donkeys and sold into labor or the circus. So which is why Pleasure island is banned and or off limits. And if you look real close at the coachman in the movie at the Red lobster Inn scene you'll see he has 4 fingers while Honest John and Gideon and everyone else in the movie has 5 fingers.

I remember watching this on VHS as a kid, but it never freaked me out when this scene occurred bc I knew that bad karma was gonna be knocking here. Plus, I had to put up with a few kids at school who behaved like jack-asses, so watching this reminded me that it's best not to make an ass out of yourself or bad karma will follow me too.

The goons chase after the duo and Lampwick becomes a full donkey
Coachman: You lot, take him to the ship! I’ll get the other boy!
Coachman chases Pinocchio up a cliff. Pinocchio reaches the edge and is trapped
Coachman: I got you now! You are coming with me boy! Don’t you know bad little boys always make a jackass of themselves in the end?
Jiminy: I’ll distract him!
Jiminy hops into the Coachman’s clothes
causing the latter to dance around in fright
Jiminy: Pinocchio jump!
Pinocchio does so and Jiminy hops away
Coachman: NO! YOU WON’T ESCAPE!
Coachman gives chase but falls to his death

It could have been like this! :) When Pinocchio is trapped in the edge of the cliff Buzz Lightyear along with Sox show up out of nowhere during of (one) of their failed attempts to finnish the mission. Upon seeing that the boy is in danger he along with Sox attack the Coachman. Pinocchio manages to escape, the Coachman is arrested and at last the donkeys turn into boys again.
it was kinda like the way you described it in the remake, but without Lampwick escaping. However, the coachman and the vapor creatures did chase Pinocchio and Jiminy at the end of the island, and the coachman did not die.

What about something along these lines regarding how Pinocchio escaping Stromboli should have ended like? He seemed just as evil as the Coachman.
The best part I can't stand when pinocchio and lampwick turns into a donkey. It's terrifying.

In the original fairy tale version of Pinocchio (The Adventures of Pinocchio) both Pinocchio and Lampwick (Named Candlewick in the original fairy tale) both fully transform into donkeys (Since Jiminy Cricket a.k.a the talking cricket in the original fairy tale is not there is stop Pinocchio's donkey transformation due to the cricket being killed by Pinocchio with a mallet in the first chapter of The Adventures of Pinocchio.) and Lampick is sold by the Coachman to a farm while Pinocchio is sold by the Coachman to a circus where the ringmaster forces Pinocchio to perform good tricks in his circus shows threatening to throw him in the ocean to drown and be feed to the fish if he refuses and when Pinocchio does a poor job performing tricks in the ringmaster's circuses, the ringmaster throws Pinocchio into the ocean to drown and be eaten by the fish like he threatened but Pinocchio instead returns to his puppet form after the fish eat off all his donkey skin making him a puppet again and Pinocchio then gets eaten by Monstro (Called the Terrible Dogfish in the original fairy tale.) and finds Geppato and the two swim back to shore due to the dogfish sleeping with his mouth open in the ocean's surface zone and once Pinocchio and Geppato get home, Pinocchio becomes a real human boy thanks to the Blue Fairy's magic for his good deed. In the 1940 Disney version, Pinocchio does not fully transform into a donkey while Lampick does but just gets a donkey tail and donkey ears due to his transformation being halted by the intervention of Jiminy and Pinocchio and Jiminy both escape Pleasure Island (Called the Land of Toys in the original fairy tale.) and swim back to mainland Italy and the entire sequence above from the original fairy tale never happened in the 1940 Disney version and Pinocchio keeps his donkey parts until he is revived and turned into a real human boy by the Blue Fairy (Who also makes his donkey parts he got from Pleasure Island disappear.) after scarificing himself to save Geppato in the final battle against Monstro while Lampick's fate after turning into a donkey was never revealed. They should have included the sequence from the original fairy tale (Along with the Field of Miracles/Catchfools with Pinocchio, Honest John and Gideon the Cat.) in the Disney version but with Jimny tagging along when Pinocchio fully turns into a donkey and gets sold to the circus and keep the climax with the main characters escaping Monstro, Pinocchio dying and getting revived by the Blue Fairy as a real human boy. They also should have kept that sequence (Along with Catchfools and the Field of Miracles from the original fairy tale with Honest John, Gideon the Cat and Pinocchio.) in the 2022 live-action remake of Pinocchio (1940) in order to make it still have the charm the 1940 film had and to prevent it from getting negative reviews. I would honestly make that change if I made the 2022 live-action remake of Pinocchio (1940) besides extending the roles of Honest John and Gideon the Cat plus the Blue Fairy, keep "Give a Little Whistle" and have the part from the 1940 film where Pinocchio dies at the end but is revived by the Blue Fairy and turned into a real human boy.

My guess is they didn’t eat as much food as the others. I mean, Pinocchio only got the ears and tail, while Lampwick fully transformed, so it could have something to do with the amount of exposure and indulgence. But that’s just my opinion
One of the Coachman’s henchmen probably found Lampwick (fully transformed as a donkey) in the snooker hall and put him into a crate to be sold to either the salt mines or the circus. We don’t get to see the aftermath of Lampwick’s trauma and what he was like (as a donkey), once he had calmed down.
I was pretty scared of the Donkey transformation scene of Pinocchio.

This scene does remind me of from one of those Hitchcock films according to one of the Disney Historians.
What's hilarious is I tried to describe this scene in my last comment, and Google's algorithms deleted it, because apparently saying the j-word and putting words like 'kids' and 'smoking' together is too offensive XD. We tend to think of people back then as being prudes, but Pleasure Island was way more hardcore than anything you'd see in a kid's movie today!

My own personal Disney theories
Pinocchio - I imagines Lampwick’s mother name to be Mirabella and her job is a seamstress explaining why he has better clothes compared to most other boys. She is motherly, religious, moral, strict, protective, concerned, hard-working, tough as nails, worrisome and wise. She was also bit of a rebel/flirt when she was a girl. Her likes are her son, Christianity, good behavior, being connected to the dead and honoring her country. Her dislikes are bad behavior, her son being missing, wars, criminals, people who don’t learn from their mistakes, gambling and her past girlhood’s mistakes.
Tiger Lilly - What if Captain Hook and his crew secretly killed Tiger Lilly’s mother who protected baby Tiger Lilly in hiding her in berries bushes and created a distraction by running away where her daughter was? The pirates arranged it to look like an animal attacked her which explained why Tiger Lilly’s dad and the rest of the Indians didn’t seek revenged when they went looking for them. The truth remains secret to this very day.
Aurora’s family - Yet I know it's true that visions are seldom all they seem But if I know you, I know what you'll do you'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream - Do you think Aurora is like Cassandra or Joseph King of Dreams? Her dream with her mystery man Philip did comes true. Also, do you think that Stefan and Leah pray to God or turned to some magical users for a miracle child?
Philip’s mother - Do you think that Maleficent or some kind of evil magical user killed Philip’s mom when he was a young kid? It could explains partly on why Philip is brutal to Maleficent. He doesn’t hates magic considering that he trusts the good fairies but that doesn’t mean he going to turn a blind eye to magical users who abused others with their magic. I imagines she was a sweet plumb jolly woman who similar to Hubert enjoyed fun but knew when to be serious when it was needed.
Belle’s sister - What if Belle really did had a younger sister named Clarice but she died young like their mother?
Moana’s brothers - What if Moana really did had several brothers who secretly went on a quest when she was very young but everybody assumes that they died which explain even more why Tui is paranoid about anybody going into the water (besides his childhood friend’s death).

@@mcpeanutful Maybe Tiger's Lily's tribe is native to the world so they're different? Or maybe they traveled to this place while they are adults (like Hook and his crew did) but the kids are still able to grow up slowly because they are more mature and surrounded by adults who guide them. That makes the Indian kids different from the lost boys because they ran away from their families and refuses to grow up so they are in the same childlike mindset that they always had. What do you think?

1. Captain Hook and his crew don't like children who refuse to turn into adults (I have read somewhere that Captain Hook symbolizes being an adult).
2. If there are adults in Never Land, that might be to give one a clue that Never Land is not a real place-that this was all a dream.
@@mcpeanutful Well actually if you takes the second Peter Pan film as canon it is actually not a dream because an adult Wendy is able to see Peter and Tinker Bell in the end of the film.
It is worth mentioning that the Indian adults do seem more laid back compared to Hook and his crew since they're not only involved with a mock war with the lost boys but actually enjoyed it as well. The chief himself also proves to be quite reasonable. He takes his daughter and tribe's safety seriously but you can also tell that he enjoys the heck out of the relationship that his tribe have with Peter and the lost boys and once the misunderstanding was cleared up he wastes no time inviting his guests to a huge party. The Indians seem to be symbolizes for adults who are responsible but still have a child heart deep down. They don't try to takes in and changes the boys but they are still there if they need them.
Are we sure that adult Wendy isn't imagining Peter and Tinker Bell when they appear together at the end of the movie, like in the TV series Arthur, when we see D.W.'s imaginary friend Nadine?

Pinocchios jump from the cliff into the water Somewhat reminds me of Pocahontas's jump from the cliff into the deep pool below,as they Both dive in the same position and enter the water with barely a splash and disappear instantly under the water but don't drown.

No, it's real beer.
It was root beer in the 2022 live action remake.
It's beer, in the 2022 remake they dummied it down to root beer because it's "For the KiDs" but it makes more sense to have actual beer since the point of pleasure island is to indulge in naughty stuff

Jiminy wouldn’t have had *time* to get all the boys (including Lampwick) off the island (especially without the Coachman seeing what he was doing). This would especially have led to Pinocchio transforming further, from *how long* he’d been on the island.
