      Yes - in 2021, having not seen more than a handful of Strictly dances on UA-cam since I emigrated just before the start of the 2014 series! Tonight I've watched all their dances, in order (what's happened to the BBC's recordings of Week 3??) and now all the dances in the final. What a partnership these two had...
      Three more showdances and then the final pair to watch - and even though I know the result, it's captivating just like series 1 through to 2013 were :)

    I completely understand what everyone's saying about this not being a show dance and I agree but when I think about it I wouldn't have wanted him to do anything other than this, it was nostalgic and made me cry, not to mention he didn't put a foot wrong!

    • @ecampbell2711

      totally agree- anyway, last year Caroline flack did an understated showdance and got 40...2012, Louis smith did a rumba-esque showdance and got 40. Jay is the first winner since 2012 never to have been in a dance off, and the first winner since 2008 not to have got a 40 in the final. He was the best over the course of the series and so deserved this victory- and as for this dance, it was stunning, cool and perfect for him.

      +Rhiannon Charles completely right, no foot wrong and on the plus side he did not just chuck her about like the usual show dances he actually showed his ability which generally we don't see in the male dancers, I feel this was just perfect for him and the only down side was it wasn't long enough!! I am always left wanting more :) lol

    Delighted that Jay won. He was the most consistent dancer throughout the 13 weeks of the series and was never in the bottom two. Maybe he wasn't the best 'showman' as he hasn't had acting experience, but his ability with his hands and feet more than made up for that. However the best thing about this young man is that he had no ego; he gave all the credit for winning each week and last night to Aliona.When he made a mistake he said sorry to her and was mortified that he'd let her down. A breath of fresh air in a media-driven world where inflated ego's and one's self-belief in how fabulous you are seems to be the norm. I hope Jay carves a successful post-Strictly career from this. TV needs people like him around.

    People say "it wasn't showy enough" but I loved it, and it's just Jay to a tea! yeah he could of done something more over the top, but I think that ultimately he wouldnt of liked it as much. he said the other day about this showdance, that if people didn't like it then he was okay with that, because it means a lot to him, and Ali! and I think thats great! throughout this series he's stayed true to himself, not getting his chest out, not getting tanned, or outfits that have been bejeweled to death. he's just done it his way, and I think thats actually why a lot of people connected with him!

    • @olivialeonard899
      @olivialeonard899 8 років тому +26

      +Sophie Louise In total agreement with everything you've stated. He has remained true to himself which has made him an incredibly relatable person to those that are prone to feeling anxious. He has danced with an understated and sophisticated style, that failed to duly noted by the judges who tend to lean towards to garish and over the top. He maintained a sensitive and emotional presence throughout all of his dances and was actually a complete breathe of fresh air for the show. On a personal note it was nice watching someone who also gets completely spaced out, gets nervous and is lacking of confidence. A REAL HUMAN! The dance was perfect for the pairing. It had identity! Perhaps on the next series the judges (bar Darcy) will be less critical of contestants that don't feel comfortable being put in a box and that won't achieve things in a way in which they feel comfortable.

    • @sophlouise27

    • @BluebirdintheSky

      +Sophie Louise When you have that level of technical ability, you do not need what Anton, Giovanni and Kevin had to add to Katie, Kellie and Georgia's performances in order to mask technical shortfalls. However, if Jay and Aliona had been full of more gymnastics than all of Anita and Gleb's performances put together, the judges would have criticised it for being too showy because they have an agenda. The agenda worked last year and then failed miserably twice. First with Caroline Flack walking out of the job the BBC already had lined up for her before the start of the series and (as it now turns out, very wrongly) taking The X Factor job instead. Second with Caroline Flack returning as champion and dancing at a standard that wouldn't get most contestants past week one.

    I loved this routine. Show dances on strictly often end up being gymnastic routines with who can throw their partner around the most or be thrown around. But this kept it being a dance competition. And it suited them so well.

      pepsiforever 346xr5 Aliona took the same approach she did all season with Jay -- and kept routines stripped right back to perfectly executed footwork, etc. -- without the unnecessary distractions of various gimmicks, etc. Clearly it paid off -- and the public recognized & appreciated that. What is a showdance ? The definition on SCD is that you can do what you want. So they did.
    Aliona did turn his world around (said Max on ITT). Jay is in his element now and on the dancefloor.
    Loved the opening because of that. Totally get it.
    I don't understand that the judges couldn't grasp the concept and went only for a "spiderman" entrance ??
    There was more to it than just that. Really put me off them.
    Stepping on the dancefloor (in white) followed by everything Strictly is supposed to be about (10 dancing). Lovely mix of latin and ballroom danced to perfection. Technically difficult, changes in tempo, lovely transitions. Beautiful !!
    It showed his improvement during this series. Massive !!
    Imho rather stupid to think the dance should've been closed by something simular or pitched the other way around.
    He is to stay on the dancefloor. Found his mojo back and his love of dance. I don't care what "the industry" expects but I know I've watched a lot of modern dance that uses this sort of storytelling.....Open end

    I ADORED Jay and Aliona's show dance, for me it really showcased how much he has learnt throughout the series and how much of a performer he has become. Different styles and techniques, nothing gimmicky and just like them as a dancing partnership, modern, full of chemistry, contemporary and full of class!

      Agree, Catherine. I thought the dance was cool, deceptively simple and very beautiful. A very different, unshowy showdance and all the better for that. It suited Jay's laidback style and I found it rather touching. His and Aliona's connection and empathy is clear.

    am delighted he won! the judges tried to make comments for kellie to win, but I'm glad voters saw through that- am annoyed that Craig said "the best dancer doesn't necessarily win" on the red button feature with zoe. I loved ALL of jays dances from this final- such a worthy winner xxx

    • @dajtoad1
      @dajtoad1 8 років тому +4

      +Emma Campbell It's very true that the best dancer doesn't necessarily win. However, this time the best dancer DID win. Kellie had a better showdance (and TBH an easier ride of it having her Tango as judge's choice, as there wasn't much wrong with it in the first place whereas Jay's QS was a disaster and therefore also very psychologically intimidating). Fortunately, people vote not just on dances on the final night but on the series as a whole. Jay's waltz, jive, salsa, tango, rumba and charleston all better than the others.

      +Emma Campbell Well, week 2 anyway. I wasn't impressed with his Cha cha but it was very difficult to tell at that point, what with the hideous shirt, sticky out pockets and Jay shaking like a leaf. From Waltz onwards, though, he consistently impressed me.

    How lucky this couple were to be selected as partners on Strictly. Aliona is simply superb, and Jay, with no ballroom dancing experience took on everything that she taught him. The result was week after week of dances that were executed with style and a lot of class. I am ecstatic that they won in the final, but so sad that Aliona retired after the win. I am STILL in complete awe at the level at which they BOTH performed.

    This suited Jay to a T! I loved that he said he was okay with the judges not being a fan of it as it meant so much to him and Aliona and tbh that's what the show dance should be about (in my opinion) 😊 I feel as though if Jay did something really over the top he wouldn't have enjoyed it as much.

    I loved this dance. So okay it didn't have bells, whistles, ribbons and bows but sometimes doing a simplistic routine is incredibly brave because the dance relies on the couple showcasing technique rather than HEY LOOK AT THIS CRAZY LIFT INTO A RUNNING PROMENADE AS FIREWORKS FLY EVERYWHERE.
    The focus was on Jay's technique and personality. I guess the music could have been a bit better, perhaps that wasn't as exciting as required.

    I don’t think this needed to big as big and showy as was said at the time. It’s kind of a ‘Greatest Hits’ dance of all their best dancing bits together - the Charleston, jive, salsa, waltz, rumba.....it’s a lovely, deeply personal way for a dancing couple to say “thank you for this time together”. In a way, I think that had more impact than an especially showy “look at all these crazy lifts we can fit into 5 seconds” showdance.

    I personally loved this dance but I thought the judges were very unfair on Jay. Regardless as to whether or not they liked the choreography, they should have scored Jay on his dancing, not on the choreography. He deserved 9/10s for this performance but they undermarked him over things out of his control.

  • @mikebenn945

    Gerry Benn.I have a theory, don't laugh but I think Jay frightened the producers of the show after his superb waltz in week 2 followed by THAT JIVE in week three. He was so good that it must have seemed that he was likely to be on top of the leader board every week, that there would be no contest and the other contestants might as well go home.What a relief when he had a bit of a trip the next week which the judges jumped on to criticise and mark down. Craig's criticism of Jay's facial expressions was very harsh and sometimes unnecessary but it gave him a reason for lowering his mark.I was so glad to see that Darcy felt the same after the viennese waltz.The show dance above was pure class compared to K's and K's lindy hop.
    But thankfully the good old public failed to be taken in by the crazy 40;s awarded in the final and the glitter ball was duly awarded to the right contestants

      +Mike Benn Mike (alias Mike's wife). I think you have summed up the order of events perfectly. I suspect like many, I was delighted with the result and dismayed by the judges antics in the final. May put off other young men with charisma and personality signing up for Strictly if they get treated as Jay (and Aliona) did. UA-cam views prove the quality of the showdance. Jan.

    this is what it was supposed to be - a SHOWdance that SHOWcased all their dances over the series. this was a far more brave strategy as more could have gone wrong given all the styles involved in quick succession rather than one style only packed with public appeally gimics, plus a sob story thrown in for good measure. this was pure class vs brash and tacky, class will always SHOW.

    Here I am, a year later, with Strictly back on tv, still watching Jay and Aliona because they were simply fabulous. I'm loving Danny Mac and Louise Redknapp, and I have a soft spot for Greg Rutherford, but none of this year's contestants' performances so far have even come close to Jay's.

    Very well done to all dancers. You were all brilliant! However, if the show is to be taken even slightly seriously as a dance competition it either has to be decided purely by the judges, or the public need to see the entire dancers (feet to heads) throughout the entire dance. The repeated camera zoom in / zoom out has to end. The judges regularly point out errors which the cameras have completely missed! And, public voting cannot be taken seriously until the mechanics of the voting system are revealed and independently audited.

      +Ivan Sanders Totaly agree with you on this Ivan. I hate the way the producers think we are getting a "better view" if they keep cutting shots and dancing around with the cameras. I never see Len and the rest of the judges running after the dancers like the cameras do. Perhaps a fixed point of view as to what the judges are seeing...

    Whereas I would have liked something with a bit more wow! in it,I can see what Aliona was trying to do here. It was a showcase dance rather than a show dance.I almost think that not ever having been in a dance off worked against Jay/Aliona in this final.Being in the dance off clearly invigorated Kellie/Kevin both physically and mentally, and to a lesser extent Georgia/Giovanni.I like that the public decide who wins in the final.The programme belongs to them, not the judges. They've paid for it after all.The dance was well performed but,the start notwithstanding,virtually risk free.

      +jasmine543210 To be honest, the judges scores don't really mean that much in the final. It doesn't even mean that much throughout the competition; a lot of contestants ended up staying in the show longer than they perhaps would have if they had been judged purely by their scores. But I thought Jay was a worthy winner, and you could see he didn't expect to win.

      +jasmine543210 Jasmine, just because they're employed as judges doesn't mean they are always right! Some of the dances that Len, in particular, has raved about and described as perfect, are actually far from it. Watched in slow mo, some of Kellie and Georgia's dances are full of mistakes, but these were overlooked due to favouritism. Jay is exquisite, and deserves every bit of his success.

      +Kim Pringle Calling it a 'stomp fest' is definitely belittling Kevin's choreography... It's a type of dance that they decided to perform and succeeded in... I know people are disappointed the couple they wanted to win, didn't. But we should not begrudge the one who did win. Comments with such negative undertones only undermine the winners ability to enjoy his win, which isn't our right to do. It only makes us look judgmental. He worked hard and deserved his win. I'd like to think it had more to do with his hard work and his kind, caring personality than it did being in a band that took a break over a year ago. Through this entire experience he never said anything but positive encouraging words to his co-competetors. We should all learn by his example, way to go Jay's mum.

      +pennylane36 Totally agree - Maybe he wasn't 'best on the night' in everyone's eyes, but he was the best dancer over the thirteen week series and he'd never been in the bottom two. At the end, it is always a popularity contest as most people have made their mind up who they want to win before the final show starts. Even if Jay had fallen over, I would still have voted for him because his previous dances have been wonderful, and, in my opinion, routinely under-marked. He is an excellent example of a young man with good manners, no ego, polite etc., a breath of fresh air. I hope he gets a good career out of this show.

    Yes I think Aliona let him down. But Jay danced her choreography to perfection. Had it been the first time we saw those moves, it would have been better received. The music isn't exactly upbeat. But, like most sequels it's never as good second time around. I can't help the feeling that the judges are also being harder on Jay than some of the other contestants. They clearly have their favourites.

      +yvonnetkd They always seemed to give him really nice comments and then score him much lower than their comments would indicate, then 5 dances later you'd notice every other contestant got much harsher comments - but also higher scores.
      I don't think Jay was a worthy winner, although Aliona is my fave pro and I'm glad she's the 1st to claim the glitter ball twice. Georgia should have won, her Show Dance was alright, her Charleston was amazing and putting Kellie's Charleston side-by-side with it didn't do Kellie any favours. Plus Kellie was over marked, her Tango had already been overshadowed by other Tangos in this series and to see it get a perfect score was ridiculous.

      Whilst you are welcome to your opinion, so is the nation, and the nation voted him champion. Jay said in his interview after that the only reason they are champions is because of the voting public. He acknowledges that they didn't dance the best on the night.
      However, while the other two were better on the night, through the competition as a whole,e all three were worthy and the final could have gone to anyone. I'm glad it went Jay's way.
      Strictly has always been part ability part popularity, otherwise Katie would never have made it to the final, and others wouldn't have gotten as far as they did.
      Everyone had their 'journey' to the final, and Jay's journey captured the hearts of the British Public.
      To be honest, I had never heard of Jay McGuiness until Strictly, but he has been the only reason I continued watching strictly this year. His lines, his humble outlook, and those arms have been a pleasure to enjoy. For an introverted member of a boyband who, in his early life, left dance school because he was bullied (yes I've since done my research as it was a case of - who the hell is this guy) I am ecstatic he won - regardless of his performances on the night. He didn't turn on the tears. He got on with his job - nervous legs and all.
      You compare his charleston with Georgia's or Kelly's - It was just as good. Like you, I thought other Tango's were better than Kelly's, and just because she could pull funny faces while dancing, she got inflated marks. Georgia has one hell of a career ahead of her, and I am pleased for her.
      However, no one but Jay could have done a Jive like that in week 3. And that isn't even going into detail over his salsa or paso. For me his Waltz was my fav in week 2.
      Regardless of anything else you post here, which I will not reply to as I have no intention of getting into a war of words - The nation spoke and JAY WON. End of Story. So whether you approve of the result or not, it isn't going to change.
      JAY MCGUINESS 2015 STRICTLY CHAMPION - a worthy one.

    • @goawayleavemealone2880
      @goawayleavemealone2880 8 років тому +1

      yvonnetkd "However, no one but Jay could have done a Jive like that in week 3." Katie and Georgia both did damn good Jives in week 1.
      "And that isn't even going into detail over his salsa or paso." Jay's Salsa wasn't great, his upper body was far too tight and lets not kid ourselves Anita was Goddess of the Dance, when it came to the Paso.
      "JAY MCGUINESS 2015 STRICTLY CHAMPION - a worthy one." I believe you mean an over-rated one, I knew Jay was going to win the second he become last man standing - doesn't mean it was a well deserved win. Especially when in a dull as dish water final all the most entertaining moments came from Georgia, Katie and Kellie.

    • @jasmine543210
      @jasmine543210 8 років тому +1

      Kevin's choreo was flash because it was a show dance - throughout the series, he has produced the most wonderful, lyrical, and expressive dances, in a league above most of the other professionals (in terms of storytelling). I think Jay and Georgia were fab too, but on the night Kellie was the clear winner. I would've been happy if Georgia had won, but Jay still hasn't got the entire package - his storytelling isn't up to the standard of his technique.

    • @claire_stapley
      @claire_stapley 8 років тому +1

      +jasmine543210 You make a lot of good points. As I have stated on here before this was just a clip show of Jay and Aliona's greatest hits. It was danced well, but was boring, it wasn't a showdance as the title would suggest. I've been a fan of Jay (still am) since he did that Waltz in week 2, but they both let me down in the final. Jay didn't have the fight in him like Kellie or Georgia, in fact, I somewhat get the impression that the reason for this lame showdance and the absence of the Classic Jive was too 'go easy' on him in a sense. So if he is such a fantastic dancer (which I'm not denying for one moment) he SHOULD be able to perform that Jive again and again. You can't just back out because you're scared of failing. Even if the Jive wasn't as flawless as it was the first time round, it still should have made an appearance. If it had been performed, I would be more convinced as to believing the right couple won the show.

    Well, after hearing the result I'm thoroughly disappointed. Yes yes, you may hate me but I don't feel like Jay was the worthy winner of this series. It's so sad that they make the final nothing more than a glorified popularity competition, because otherwise I think results that don't SUCK. In my opinion (and yes before you leave a WHOLE load of hate comments I completely understand if you liked any, if not ALL of these winners) Tom Chambers, Louis Smith, Abbey Clancy and now Jay Mcguiness all shouldn't have been winners. Again, if you like any of those people, that's okay, but I just feel that making the final audience only is a bit dumb. But still, kudos to you Jay for all the absolutely amazing dances you HAVE done, but to me, you shouldn't be the winner of Strictly Come Dancing 2015.

      +Scd123 Agree, Scd. My pick was Georgia, and if people were bored by her showdance, then on the night, it should've been Kellie. Jay IS a very strong technical dancer and was arguably underscored tonight, but his performances bore me. How many female ringers in the UK and the U.S. end up as shock eliminations or in the dance-off partly because they are boring performers? Yet it never stopped him. Sigh.

    • @jeremybiggleton3186
      @jeremybiggleton3186 8 років тому +8

      Well, Jay had been the best technical dancer this series. The thing that annoys me is that if he had danced any of the other show dances he would have done it better, and none of the three finalists could have done this better. It was technically better than the other three, technically more difficult, technically more intricate, and technically more polished. If Jay had had some contemporary rhumba number, or an upbeat fred and gingery style dance, or even a lindy hop like Kellie, the judges would say WOW regardless, Georgia stumbled and was out of time in her Charleston and they gave her a 40. You can't blame him for the choreography, they under marked him based on choreo but his dance was the best performed, and most difficult. Also he was nice, and he endeared himself to the public, and he was the best dancer.

    • @joanr6915
      @joanr6915 8 років тому +3

      +Scd123 I respect your opinion. I voted for Jay because to me he was consistently a great dancer throughout the series and also because I'm not a lover of gimmicks. His showdance was 'dancing' - not being thrown in the air or falling backwards from a platform. He weaved one dance into another, latin into ballroom, ballroom into latin, which is very difficult. Okay it didn't look 'spectacular', but the difficulty-factor was far superior to the other three. His other two dances were lovely and his final dance definitely deserved a 40, not 39. That, I am sure, attracted more votes as he was cheated out of getting a perfect score, which happened several times during the series. Anyway, I still respect your opinion - my mum would definitely have voted for Katie if she'd still been alive (my mum that is) !!
