It took me hours to learn the animations and when to dodge. It’s a classic fromsoft kind of fight. Seems impossible when you first encounter them. Then it’s easy after you learn it.
@@Nerevar5me The Fringefolk Heros Grave fight is mostly hard because of the insanely cramped arena, when I found another of the same boss in a much wider space I beat him in a couple tries.
I think summons on the whole are a good idea/new mechanic but I think it also has enabled FromSoft to double down on some of their worst tendencies for boss design in certain cases because "Just use a good summon" is a universal answer
I think you're right Malenia is the epitome of that. She has an attack that to the day of this comment I don't know how you're supposed to deal with it. It takes a huge AOE, tracks a bunch, multiple hits that takes a TON of life and if you shield through it she gets full life. With a Mimic Tear tho you can interrupt her. I only beat her because every time she used this attack she aimed at the Mimic and I could stop her by using knifes or other ranged stuff like Ash of War / L2.
@@crybirb There's a way to partially dodge it, and completely dodge it To partially dodge it, wait until the first burst and dodge, you WILL GET HIT, but not enough to kill (admittedly, i have 55 Vigor, but it didn't damage me for more than 30%), then you wait like a split second, and dodge TOWARDS her, then she will raise a little bit, you dodge AGAIN towards her, and then spam dodge AWAY from her. This guarantees you will not get damaged besides the first initial burst. The ONLY WAY to dodge every single burst is to be far away, that's it. If you're meleeing her or close by, and she chooses to do Spiral Cloud Passage, you are taking damage guaranteed. This is after numerous attempts, and several co-op forays. I have no idea how to dodge the first burst without just being far away or having a thick shield.
I hate the this critique because you can't summon on a good amount of bosses/encounters/dungeons which means its NOT a universal answer. Its really good but far from the worst thing people say it to be. These same people saying its busted are still also dying in the hundreds lol
It isn’t a universal answer. You’re forgetting people can go the whole game without using them or getting any “good ones.” The devs saw the DS3 JoJo Stand randomizer mod. Thought it was cool. And like any good dev team, they put a cool fan-inspired thing in their next major release. Why would a company this good want to double down on bad design for their magnum opus?
What I hate about the raisins is that they don't SHOW you how much health Torrent gets back with each one, while sipping a flask shows me right away while riding him
The horse healthbar should really show up above the player hp It's so odd how they pushed so hard having a horse in the game, yet it's such an undercooked feature. There's no customization, progression, barely any bosses worth using Torrent for, can't even pet the boy.
You know instead of having the health bar show up very briefly above Torrent which can very easily be missed in the confusion of battle, why not have his health bar on the HUD the SAME EXACT WAY THEY DO FOR YOUR ASH SUMMONS
I’m 70 hours in. Have 3 great runes. I still don’t know who the main players are behind the scenes and I’m certain I’ve missed npcs and failed npc quest lines.
My favorite glitch kill I've gotten was against a Grafted Scion. After getting smacked for a few seconds I decided to runaway and climb up a nearby ladder, the Scion teleported to the top of the ladder but had just gained height and didn't move onto land, so it instantly fell to its death. The most consistent I've found is the big bears, when they do the bear hug if you mash out they drop through the world

It's considered their most difficult for a reason now as she's a massive wall for 95% of players. You'll always have the "git gud, she's not hard bro" assholes but truly she is, she is hard and so much so that I ended up speccing into erdtree shield projectile spam to kill her and even then it took me probably 10 tries.
INCOMING WALL OF TEXT *On the 'X is broken' discussion: TLDR: Health and Dragon incantations are lacking at high level, everything else is broke AF. As someone who took the time to farm up to max level (713 as a Wretch) (thank you for your service, Caelid cliff bolder and vagrant legion), I can say with confidence, almost everything is indeed super busted. The only things I would say aren't as busted as you think are health and dragon incantations. In both cases, the problem only shows at the top end of the stats range. 1) Dragon incantations are just too slow with high/max dexterity in comparison to most sorceries and incantations. However, they're still stupid fun. 2) Health's problem isn't inherent to the stat, there appears to be a damage floor (as a % of your max HP) that bosses and enemies can deal to you based on which attack they use. I've noticed this by correlating my own tests with the comments of others for specific bosses. For example, the Bell Bearing Hunter at the Dragonbarrow merchant shack has a huge number of people complaining that he 3-shots them at various soul levels. I can testify that even with my 2100 HP in full crucible set, he still 3-shots you. So just be aware, there is a point beyond which pumping health does basically nothing. Every other stat is godlike at max level with an appropriate setup, so just go with what you like and have fun with, no matter what you can make it work. *On Moonveil: It's heavy weapon art variant is crazy busted. The amount of stagger and poise break combined with the damage output is insane; it also hits 2x if you hit with both the sword blade and the dimension slash.
The thing is Dragon Incantations don't have their own stat their a part of the larger Incantation pool it's like saying "Meteor Sorceries are bad" they're only one part of sorceries as a whole, Now something like High Health being bad is a bigger deal since it's a stat level ups are spent on.
It seems like those erdtree dragons are liable to breaking. Did the same thing to the one in the party dungeon located in radahns zone, where after it finished it winding lunge grab I got a freeze status off on it and it sat in the corner like it was on timeout.
I beat the Tree spirit the same way, got a riposte and the boss just stood there and took the rest of my swings. It's probably in something that could be replicated for speed running
on the summon talk, I fought Margit with the imps and it seems like his AI just does not know how to deal with them and in turn the imps would just keep on stacking bleed.
I shit you not, I am 65 hours into the game and still cant cure poison. I have just been using the healing over time effect from the Flask of Wonderous Physik.
That happened to me too with the Tree Spirit except the AOE never went off. It’s definitely a bug that has to do with stunning it when it’s in the middle of the AOE animation.
Here's my personal tip for low health for most game, use the talisman that ups your defence at full health, the heaviest armour gives around 6 defence so if your defense is at 20 from level ups, then it would be 26 point something, that talisman ups your defense to 50, hp regen talisman is another good combo to go with it because hp regen is great in this game and you can survive one hit kills
Funny to hear that someone else got an Ulcerated Tree Spirit to stop moving. I had one in an entire other cave just stop moving entirely when I was right behind it, not even after an interruption or anything. Something's just fucked with them and their AI breaks sometimes.
Hey guess what. After 13 years of development, Fromsoft actually made the game that would rival an Elder Scrolls that they were tasked to make back in 2008 for Demon's Souls.
"Dragon spells are fucking stupid powerful" I spent hours lvling up my guy to get arcane 15 to use the dragon breath incantation. Try it out, does less than half dmg to enemies I can 2 shot. Decide to never touch it again.
The area, range and speed of the attack makes it very useful, but it's not a replacement for attacking. Also Rot Breath is great if you're having trouble wearing a boss down.
I had a hard time committing to a build in this game. So much so that I got my Arcane to 20 for the dragon moves, then everything else is 30 or higher. Been trying sorcery, incantations of all kinds. I'm not giving up my dual-wield collosal hammers though. Takes invaders and bosses apart.
Jump R2 WILL NOT carry you through this whole game; no matter how big your DEX/STR stats. Jump R2 combined with some form of status ailment or magic might carry you through most of it from what i've seen. I'm currently doing my first run starting as a wretch and have put ZERO POINTS into any stats besides VIGOR, ENDURANCE DEX and STR. I regret it so good.
A good way to tell if you've cleared a cave/catacomb is to try to fast travel from inside of it. If you can fast travel, then it's clear and if you can't fast travel then it's not.
It is the only NPC questline in Souls history that adds a checkmark on your map...what the fuck. Are you forgetting that this is the only game in Souls history to have a map. It is not a very good gauge, when there is no precedent set.

*Just wanted to confirm something for you guys. Much like Dark Souls 3, Greatshields are criminally underrated in this game. Poise has returned to it's strongest state ever, Dark Souls 1 poise, and there are weapon arts (ashes) and spells that can make your shield completely invincible. There are shields that can block and attack at the same time and do substantial damage. STR builds are the end all builds for PVE & PVP. I won't say exactly what equipment, but you can, if you want, just block and club your way through everything.*

You know woolie is a DS2 fan when he worries about durability that thing I forgot was in DS lol
Ulcerated Tree Spirit is a true pain in the ass. I only beat him through the blessing of lady luck and blindly rolling as he bounced around the way too small room.
Lady luck smiled upon me as well, on the run I beat him I got grabbed by his bite and was going to die if not for the timely message rating restoring my health
@@ElecTrishian924 Damn, that's like, extra super luck. I was just lucky on his jank ass hit box not clipping me.
I've started using Rot Breath on *everything* I can, and it makes that boss in particular a cakewalk.
@@crybirb There's a way to partially dodge it, and completely dodge it
To partially dodge it, wait until the first burst and dodge, you WILL GET HIT, but not enough to kill (admittedly, i have 55 Vigor, but it didn't damage me for more than 30%), then you wait like a split second, and dodge TOWARDS her, then she will raise a little bit, you dodge AGAIN towards her, and then spam dodge AWAY from her.
@@crybirb Roll dodge it.
I hate the this critique because you can't summon on a good amount of bosses/encounters/dungeons which means its NOT a universal answer. Its really good but far from the worst thing people say it to be. These same people saying its busted are still also dying in the hundreds lol
It isn’t a universal answer. You’re forgetting people can go the whole game without using them or getting any “good ones.”
The devs saw the DS3 JoJo Stand randomizer mod. Thought it was cool. And like any good dev team, they put a cool fan-inspired thing in their next major release.
Why would a company this good want to double down on bad design for their magnum opus?
Woolie! You find resin at the base of erdtrees wayyy down to their roots…at the end of catacomb micro dungeon battles.
What I hate about the raisins is that they don't SHOW you how much health Torrent gets back with each one, while sipping a flask shows me right away while riding him
thats not true the raisins absolutely show how much health you get back its just inconsistent because of how the health bars disappear
The horse healthbar should really show up above the player hp
It's so odd how they pushed so hard having a horse in the game, yet it's such an undercooked feature. There's no customization, progression, barely any bosses worth using Torrent for, can't even pet the boy.
@@vaan_ healthbar shows up above the horse dude, its pretty hard to miss.
You know instead of having the health bar show up very briefly above Torrent which can very easily be missed in the confusion of battle, why not have his health bar on the HUD the SAME EXACT WAY THEY DO FOR YOUR ASH SUMMONS
@@inimata_irl I'm talking about a permanent visual indicator in the UI, not a half second display when you get hit.
The most consistent I've found is the big bears, when they do the bear hug if you mash out they drop through the world
It feels so weird looking at the older videos and seeing how much their living and hair situations have changed
You can coat 2 2-handed weapons for powerstancing. You can coat the right hand one normally, then 2hand the left hand weapon, and then u can coat that also.
I like to call this summons the tarkus system
Internally it's referred to as the Buddy System. Don't forget your Buddies.
I can't wait for Pat to get to Malenia, his "bosses are a joke with rot and freeze/bleed" will get quickly dissolved haha
He uses Mimic Tear so he's still not going to struggle, unless Melania decides to do Spiral Cloud Passage (the jump attack) on him.
This isn't a dis, I myself *had* to use Mimic Tear, Melania Vs. STR Build is basically impossible. I don't have the patience.
@@TheMrTangamandapio Of course she's gonna use it, in my experience she spams the shit out of it.
I have never been more terrified than when she used it twice in a row during one of my runs.
@@thegoodtypeofrealism9254 I've co-op with hosts who have been cursed with double jump attacks, and yes, it's basically a death sentence. If she chooses to end the fight, there's nothing you can do.
I beat melania with dual wielded ultra greatsword and blood step, no mimic. Took fucking forever and had to use jump attacks only.
Pat is gonna die a lot.
@@TheMrTangamandapio Mimic tear is a double edged sword, as a mimic gives malenia a constant supply of health to regen as mimics are bad at dodging
I bet Pat struggles hard unless he gets exceptional RNG and can DPS her down before she does a flurry
I mean hell, I respeced into bleed at 125 and couldn't kill her after 30 attempts because I would just keep drawing her attention away from my mimic at the wrong times right when she was doing her insta kill.. I dodged and lived through it maybe a handful of times but by the time you hit phase two you're lucky if your mimic has half health left and now you have rot and even more near insta kill moves under her belt, plus the fact that her blossum she does right at the start means your mimic rushes in and nearly dies in the next 5 seconds
I don't know, it's a brutal, brutal and unfair boss fight.
INCOMING WALL OF TEXT
*On the 'X is broken' discussion:
TLDR: Health and Dragon incantations are lacking at high level, everything else is broke AF.
*On Moonveil:
It's heavy weapon art variant is crazy busted.
I’m level 70 and the moonveil katana helped me bust general radahn down in 2 minutes if you can get under him. No shame. I love it.
can not wait til they find the mimic
Why is it always silent intro??
No intro ahead, therefore, try scrubbing
No hidden passage
Therefore praise the message!
It seems like those erdtree dragons are liable to breaking. Did the same thing to the one in the party dungeon located in radahns zone, where after it finished it winding lunge grab I got a freeze status off on it and it sat in the corner like it was on timeout.
Well don’t feel bad plagues walkthrough is going to be legendarily long as all hell and it’s going to be great
I beat the Tree spirit the same way, got a riposte and the boss just stood there and took the rest of my swings. It's probably in something that could be replicated for speed running
28:30 Warmaster shack run around the area there's a few root resins fast travel back pick them up again should get 3 every fast travel
on the summon talk, I fought Margit with the imps and it seems like his AI just does not know how to deal with them and in turn the imps would just keep on stacking bleed.
Here's my personal tip for low health for most game, use the talisman that ups your defence at full health, the heaviest armour gives around 6 defence so if your defense is at 20 from level ups, then it would be 26 point something, that talisman ups your defense to 50, hp regen talisman is another good combo to go with it because hp regen is great in this game and you can survive one hit kills
that very same boss broke for me too! it had half its health left and stood there as i wailed on it for a free win
Got the same bug as woolie and went Hell yeah.
Funny to hear that someone else got an Ulcerated Tree Spirit to stop moving. I had one in an entire other cave just stop moving entirely when I was right behind it, not even after an interruption or anything. Something's just fucked with them and their AI breaks sometimes.
Man I wish the full podcast was on UA-cam
I don't like how some of the more recent clips just cut out.
I had the exact same thing happen with that Boss as woolie. Something happened, I riposted and the boss bugged the fuck out and couldn't move anymore.
Hey guess what. After 13 years of development, Fromsoft actually made the game that would rival an Elder Scrolls that they were tasked to make back in 2008 for Demon's Souls.
The very same AI break happened to me against the final boss and made the victory very bitter-sweet.
same, but for me i was so overjoyed and satisfied that he died without doing nothing :D
"Dragon spells are fucking stupid powerful"
I spent hours lvling up my guy to get arcane 15 to use the dragon breath incantation. Try it out, does less than half dmg to enemies I can 2 shot. Decide to never touch it again.
hold the button, empty your fp bar. It can clear a crowd of normal guys in a fair area in front of you.
@@sileopatronus yeah it's worth it on the overworld when you are fighting a big crowd.
Fun fact, if you make Godrick cross his phase 2 HP thresh hold with a bleed proc he never enters his second phase.
You feed torrent because when you get kicked off of him you get put into a state that takes damage more.
I also had the same tree spirit bug.
It is the only NPC questline in Souls history that adds a checkmark on your map...what the fuck. Are you forgetting that this is the only game in Souls history to have a map. It is not a very good gauge, when there is no precedent set.
i actually found the big enemy you can hit. gonna try and use this on a second character, get a headstart
Summons are so good I stopped using them unless I was fighting more than one boss at a time.
ive actually seen ulcerated tree spirits ai break alot, i think its just something with that boss
mimic summon is insane
I only just discovered the ring in ds1 that slows weapon degradation, oh my idk if I’m ready for this one yet
The boss glitched for me too on my 4th attempt
I did that boss before I even left the cave
Hey woolz, for podcast videos like these that are longer and usually have a decent amount of content from the podcast, have you considered having these as premiered videos? That way you can re-create the podcast vibe for watching it live throughout the week, as well as get more active engagement for something like this that's over an hour long.
Love the content, now to watch the rest of the video :)

Where my Sword of Night and Fire Bois at?
I ALSO broke the ulcerated tree spirit. My wolves were attacking it during it's AOE and I used a charged attack on its back and it still blew the fire everywhere but also got stunned at the same time. He got up and didn't move but I still say I deserve my win because that was my 6th time going at it my first try I got pixel to pixel and he got me and then on top of that I killed him again first try a little bit later on in the game in a specific basement with a face lol.

Well no shit, it's the first game that has a map, so of course it's the first one.
I won't say exactly what equipment, but you can, if you want, just block and club your way through everything.*
there's a well-hidden shield that if you fully upgrade it to +25, and stack it with the guard boost talisman, you get literally 100 guard boost. as in, blocking DOESNT REDUCE STAMINA AT ALL. being a coward has never been more OP in this game
