Seeing this in Rome with Michelle Slater-Pizza, at St. Peter's Basilica two days before Christmas in 2012, was one of the most powerful moments of my life. It was two days before Christmas, our first day in the city, and as we looked at it she said, "It was worth the entire trip here just to see this." We not only saw much more on that beloved trip but, when we visited Florence 10 years later, saw different versions of the Pieta Michaelangelo had also worked on. This must have been a bucket list moment for anyone viewing it; it likely never leaves the Vatican again in light of misguided art protests around the world.
Wow- so beautiful!! What a moving work of art!! I did not know Michelangelo was only twenty-three when he sculpted it. The background music was wonderful as well!!💝💗
The Pieta was transported to New York City by the Italian Line on their liner the Cristoforo Colombo, a sister ship to the ill-fated Andrea Doria which sank after colliding with another liner off Nantucket in 1956. Great care and precautions were taken in transporting this art treasure. A special container was constructed for the Pieta that would allow it to float and be rescued if the liner ever sank. This container was carried aboard the Cristoforo Colombo in the outside first class swimming pool which had been drained for this voyage.
Michelangelo is one of the greatest artists in history. Although his favorite skill was sculpture, he was also a great painter, you only have to see his incredible frescoes in the Sistine Chapel to realize it, a work that everyone should visit once in their life. La Pieta is found as soon as you enter the wonder that is St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, it is the first of the many dazzling artistic treasures that can be seen inside. Not far from the roman Colosseum, inside the Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli, is Michelangelo's Moses, an extraordinary sculptural work, my favorite by the artist, in which he demonstrates his total mastery of human anatomy. In fact, Michelangelo's sketches have been used for centuries in medical schools around the world to teach anatomy.
I was blessed to see it with my parents late summer - 1964 !!! ❤
Overwhelmingly beautiful. Definitely heaven sent.
Primetime network television, ladies and gentlemen.
If it was only half as good now as it was then. Now, we have a bazillion channels with a lot of garbage on them.
Thanks for sharing this and thanks to Ed Sullivan and his team for helping to expose the American public to this artistic treasure!
Have a great day!
Sullivan educated us, entertained us, and informed us.
The skill of Michelangelo. Beautiful work.

I saw it and it was wonderful
Fascinating. Watching Ed just take it in was moving. I had no idea there was so much detail!
Great piece of work, the detail is amazing
Incredible details! He was beyond amazing! Thank you for this bit of history!☺️
I saw it at the ‘64 World Fair.
Me too. My parents took us to that fair three times. 😊
