One day a man approached the Buddha and said I want freedom. The Buddha said get rid of the "I " because that is the ego, then get rid of the " want" which is craving then you have freedom. J.P may you be well.
Thanks for the talk, you explain everything so thoughtfully. Everytime im feeling down Buddhist teachings always makes me feel better.
It rings so true to me the statement about how we are strongly guided by habit/and unconcious conditioning I realize it in myself and everyone around me, people dont change easily and i like the metaphor of the inertia it would take to change direction of a heavy ship likened to how hard it is for people to change!.

I have to say, it seems as though you're approaching the topic of free will, a.k.a., freedom of choice, from a very superficial standpoint. Citing examples such as the choice between this cereal or that cereal, job A or job B, etc., doesn't scratch the surface of what is actually an extremely important aspect of human life. What of the ability to choose to treat people with kindness as opposed to treating them like shit? If there is no free will, then karma is a bullshit ideology. Karma is dictated by ones actions, which are a direct reflection of choice. It is through free will that I decide to spend the next 30 minutes meditating as opposed to watching TV, or listening to a Dharma talk as opposed to my favorite music. The very ability to follow Dharma and see reality for what it truly is depends totally on one's ability to choose the path which leads to such realization. The good choices you talk about here, which you claim to be an outcome of free will, actually could be an outcome of positive conditioning you've been through. And your choice to put yourself through such positive conditioning, again is an outcome of a certain experiential truths you've gained, by investing time in the path.

@bigvader. You oversimplify. Noone is questioning or doubting that the life choices we make are important and the decisions we make about partners, religion etc has consequences for example children and various responsibilites, personal, financial etc. Noone denys all such choices are of great practical import to an ordinary person. The point, I believe, is that what is conceived as ‘free will’ is an illusion. For example: you believe have the option to chose your profession, but there are many obstacles before your can realize a dream. If you wish to become an astronaut, you have a desire to be so, but limited if any control over the result. So your freedom of selection is an illusion. Imagine a poor servant girl in a house in Ghana, West Africa. She may want to be a lawyer in Chicago because she watch a TV show, but financial, legal, cultural obstacle will make it almost impossible. The point is that there is a difference between the illusion of ‘free’ will, and the possibility of action that is available to us all. Many people are powerless and have no or little freedom to choose. What ‘free’ will do they have? In practice there is a strict limit to our choices, whatever the position. A prince may wish to marry a servant girl but such an alliance is unacceptable to the king! So even with plenty of financial resources and position, choices are limited. Everyone, in different ways, are limited by our constraints.
The other aspect of freedom you mentioned is ‘seeing reality for what is truly is’. But of course very unrealistic. Truly, ‘reality’ is only an illusion for most of us, and only enlightened bhuddist are free from the illusion of ‘reality’. Most of us will never experience this level of insight.
Finally, karma is a highly complex philosophy and it is very unwise to dismiss it offhandedly (if that is what you proposed), before you study it more deeply.
PS instead of the focus on individual ‘freedom’ of choice, it is better to regard life and choices as a consequence of former choices we have made. We can not be said to have ‘free will’ but our choices determines our own karma and possibilites.

ALLAH KNOWS EVERYTHING, ALLAH IS THE ONE WHO CREATED ALL THE HEAVEN AND EARTH IN SIX TIMES THEN ALLAH DIES ON THE THRONE, ALLAH KNOWS WHATEVER IS IN THE HEAVEN AND EARTH, ALLAH KNOWS WHATEVER COMES DOWN FROM THE SKY, AND ANYTHING WHICH GOES UP TO THE SKY. GOD IS ALWAYS WITH YOU WHEREVER YOU ARE. ALLAH IS ALWAYS WATCHING WHATEVER YOU DO, TO ALLAH BELONGS ALL AUTHORITY IN HEAVEN AND EARTH. ALL MATTERS RETURN TO HIM. IT IS ALLAH WHO FLOWS DAY AND NIGHT, AND FLOWS NIGHT AND DAY. AND ALLAH KNOWS THE CONTENTS OF HUMAN HEARTS.
