Learning this game was pitched using the Shawn of the Dead rhythmic beatdown bar scene as a reference was just the cherry on top for me
Two songs I’d kick ass to, Don’t Stop Me Now and Black Betty
Edgar Wright would've loved this game. Cutscenes in rythm with music in straight up "Baby Driver"
True story not apocryphal
@@Kiboune_YT "Edgar Wright would've loved this game." Would've? Something happen to the guy we don't know about?
@@Cross177 Beware of his song about big butts. He beats you up while he plays it!
“All these years away from it, only to go back to QA.”
Woolie, please. We all know you never truly left.
Part of the ship part of the crew
once a QA, always a QA
Woolie qa's for the people
10 years later, I'm still in QA. Life is suffering.

Small world - Titmouse, the studio behind Metalocalypse, did the 2D cutscenes.
Woah, they also did "The Legend of Vox Machina. Those guys are awesome!
@@kjj26kwtf? You guys both just blew my mind back to back.
@@nukeninmgt1504
Yeah, well I just found OP's comment again having forgot it, mind blown, AND I'M already here too?
Mind blown twice in part _by myself._
Crazy.
"You gonna deny the talking cat?" -Reggie, who was there for 13 sentinels
The amount of sheer, infectious, childlike GLEE from Woolie at 9:18... god, this is why I love you guys, man.
I don't know if I've seen a character design that screamed more "To be voiced by Yuri Lowenthal" than Chai.
Is he voiced by him?
@@Rusty_Spy No, actually.
it's Robbie Daymond aka Akechi from Persona 5 and many others
@@taumpytears happy chaos and some of the bugsnax too.
I'm actually surprised Yuri isn't this at all. Especially with all the Persona reps it has so far...okay its just 2 but still enough for a set
Seeing Woolie LP this is about as surprising as water being wet. Knew this would be 1000% your jam.
It is a bit surprising he got to it quickly though
We really need more great AA games like this one.
This game is a Gamecube-era time capsule in so many wonderful ways.
Honestly, I'm dreaming of any of Sony's big devs taking a break from their quadruple A shit and making something smaller on this scale, but that is probably not happening with their current plans and death of Japan studio, maybe with Housemarque only.
At least we have many other teams and indies.
@@spiritusnox405 nah thats woolie playing the game at 720p
This is a AAA game
This is definitely triple A
The real guitar hero
No respect for gitaroo man smh
The “music video/action scene in your head” analogy is so good. Like fuck, playing the game gives me a similar feeling of the character in my head punch-rushing to the beat of the song I’m listening to in the car
My favorite part of this game is how I can feel that everyone who worked on it loved working on it. It has charm, it has soul, and I adore it so.
Watching the livestream of this was extremely painful because all chat ever did was tell woolie to constantly go back. The backseating was REAL.
Go back for what? Secrets?
Drop your shield!
@@Zombiewithabowtie see?
The art-style is certainly different but there's something about the animation style that absolutely reminds me of Titan A.E. Particularly the facial movements.
I was gonna say it reminds me of the Dragon Prince
You know, now that you say that...
They are using a standard dreamworks esk face for chai so yeah...
I thought more like Daria
Y’know I was desperately trying to find exactly what early 00’s animation this reminded me of while I’ve been playing it but yeah, Titan A.E is definitely the most relevant.
When Woolie said "White people!! We got you!!!" I cried laughing!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Same lol.
We got you for the pc you use ;)
I'm glad Woolie got on this game quick, since it seems to be made specifically for him.
The protagonist is literally my friend bryn. The hair / love of music / ipod / dmc / everything is spot on.
Is he a lovable doofus too?
i'm pretty sure the protagonist is every skinny brown haired white boy between the ages of 15 and 30 lmao
Damn, I gotta ask your friend Bryn how to do an aerial rave
It’s funny Chai and the cat are voiced by Akechi and Futuba from Persona 5. But this time the cat doesn’t tell us to go to sleep! Awesome
Technically the cat has more than one voice, so I assume you’re talking about the person who made them.
@@gameb9oy yes. Don't wanna spoil guys here.
Not that funny really all voice actors end up on other games together at some point.
I recommend everyone go look up the Minnmax interview and 8-4 Play podcast with the director John Johannes. They are really interesting and confirm that this guy knows what the hell he is doing.
Yay, I was waiting for this! I wonder how many times Woolie is going to stop to try to understand mechanics and lab...
After every mission
manga reader here: so far every level ended with about 30+ minutes in the lab
Also get ready for mind goblins.
@@vstpnv Alright doc, give it to me straight. How many missions has he gotten through? Cause I wanna see Woolie play the game, not the training mode.
@@Riggs_The_Roadie I watched the last stream and the Lab isn’t the pacing problem. Since the game locks mission select until ng+ Woolies mind goblins has him scraping every surface to not miss anything even though it’s impossible to 100% on a first run
Really fun streams but UA-cam might be the wave
@@javiercortez718 how’s he doing in combat out of curiosity? After Arkham, I’m not going to assume that Woolie will figure out combat
"Everyone creative has had these momments! The game is the music video in your head"...This literally brought a tear to my eye.
I am a British White/Jamaican Zone of the Enders/Gunstar Heroes/Ikaruga/DMC/Bayo/Sin and Punishment/Sonic/Ridge Racer fan who loves Thundercat, Kendrick Lamar, Converge, The Mars Volta, The Fall of Troy, Flying Lotus, Rolo Tomassi and Bjork (I like Hardcore Punk/Jazz/Post Hardcore and whatever the fuck the rest of it is).
I am also an Illustrator who works in Fashion/ Portraiture/Graphic design professionally. A version of this game has been in my head since the age of 16. I am now 37.
I just hope people remember that the guy who directed Vanquish was in the company when we look back on this.
I don't know why, but I can't get over the fact that Chai is 25.
He has had plenty of time to try to learn guitar
It's hard to think how he possibly functioned like this for 25 years. Like learning NOTHING until this mess
He's what now
@@psykomancer4420 4:17 It's one of the 3 things you learn about him.
I only noticed that until I returned to that bit with his application. Before then, I had always thought he was 16. You know when you try to guess someone's age, you usually give them a window, like between 15 and 18, for example? With Chai, to me, he's straight up 16: the way he talks, sounds, looks, thinks... it all just screams 16 to me for some reason. Either he lied about his age, or he's just been like this for years 🤣
damn, this game was not made for 720p and thats really obvious. the very first cutscene is like a different beast in 1080p
kinda sad that woolie got frustrated and left the game in windowed mode
Yep, 720p is garbage.
This game has the most Edgar Wright energy I've ever seen
This is the Wooliest Woolie bait I’ve ever seen. Like it was MADE for him.
The fact that Chai's weapon turns into a real guitar when you attack on beat is really cool.
I had a strong inkling he would make a lp of this game. It just calls to him!
Honestly, when Pat talked about it on the podcast. I thought he would back burner it till next month. It's his normal upload schedule.
It’ll be weird going from this game to it but I hope Woolie checks out No Straight Roads at some point, even as a one off. The music in that game is amazing, the first boss theme is still in my head months later. It doesn’t have the same beat sync mechanics as this game but still good.
This honestly feels like what NSR could have been...
I'm shocked Woolie has never played No Straight Roads
I forget which podcast episode it was but he mentioned he was gonna take a look at NSR and then said he couldn't take the dialogue seriously and was disappointed that the game play itself was not tied to rhythm. Hifi Rush seems like what he expected NSR to be.
No Straight Roads gave me YIIK cringe-level vibes. I can see why he bounced off of it.
@@Ravensgale Nowhere near the cringe level of YiiK. What are you talking about? Are you going off of only a trailer or something?
The 9 tutorials of this game teaching you how to stay on beat is hilarious. Im going to use this to help my bandmates stay on time
[BRING ME TO LIFE] IS THE STRONGEST STAND
I think pissing on the beat might be an all time favorite line from Woolie for me
YEAHHH GAME OF THE YEAR ALREADY. So glad you're playing through this one! :D
Ohhhh i been waiting for Woolie to get onboard with this! I've never played a game, where i've thought "Woolie Needs this!" more than this!
I appreciate the amount of work it took to sync everything on beat alone! This game is freaking cool.
johnny junk-arm was born
Man, I wanted a Zune BAD when I was younger. Shoutouts to the ZuneBois
Zune was FINE. I never understood the hate it got. I had more songs and high definition videos on a pocket device than anyone I knew at the time. (Not saying other options weren't available...)
YES. YES. YES. THIS IS DELICIOUS
I come from the future, Woolie climax on beat.
"stream control" jesus christ woolie lmao
He really broke the schedule to play it. Respect woolie, respect
I think the absolute best image I saw of this game was the cover of this game with an original xbox wallpaper box around it, and I knew I immediately had to get this game.
2:13 It's on Windowed Fullscreen, so you usually can't go higher than 720p, but due to the needs of the capture device... Fullscreen may not be an option.
11:41 - their names are based off of tea and coffee and the healing items are energy drinks...
OH MY GOD, THEY MADE THE THE HEALING ITEMS ENERGY DRINKS!!!
FUCK, THIS GAME IS PERFECT111!!1!1!!!!!!
This game just oozes style. So happy to see it getting the attention it deserves.
Love this game, beat it already and doing a second run. Always fun watching Woolie and Reggie play action games like this.
One thing I wish this had was the DMC combo vocals,
like having a high combo kept the guitar and vocals on even outside fights until you drop the combo rank.
Great Intro
Oh hey, when he puts the mp3 player into the basket he appears to be using two perfectly fine hands before the cutback to the sling. Didnt notice that the first time.
21:21 - crying tears of joy. I can finally have rhythm.
This looks like so much fun, absolutely beastin'.
This game is a mix of crypt of the necrodancer and sunset overdrive in the best ways possible
I can hear the black keys as the intro cutscene is playing, they did an amazing job with the og soundtrack
OMG YES FINALLY IVE BEEN HOPING FOR THIS THANK YOOOOOUUUU!!!!!
I'm excited to follow this one! I had such a great time.
Man as I clutch my old Halo 3 special edition Zune, I am excited!
This year is popping off already with GOTY’s like Pizza Tower, Dead Space now this!? It’s good to start the year off with some game with passion!
SBR probably stands for SABRE, since those robots always seem to use swords. And the GNR stands for GUNNER since they use guns.
Is this Slap Happy Rhythm Busters that game Woolie has been talking about since the SBFP days
Maaaaaan... this game is pure wholesome... just finished it yesterday, and been waiting your pt about it
that title ....... is perfection
Early in, this looks like 4kids presents Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
I kind of love it.
Can't wait till he see's Korsica in her 'cool' uniform 😩...oh man and the second to last boss fight! They are gonna pop off!
It was this or Forspoken, Woolie made the right choice.
That title isn’t even that inaccurate
Rockstar Let's Play Begins
Really hope this gets ported to PS5 at some point, thanks for LPing this in the mean time Woolie!
As much as I'd love that, it's fairly unlikely. Bethesda published this game and they were bought out by Microsoft. There were a few games post buyout that came out on Playstation but they were clearly already being developed for Playstation before hand and there were contracts that had to be adhered to. None of Bethesda's upcoming titles have Playstation ports.
the key to a good rekka voice is macho man randy savage's cadence
8:27 minor nitpick, but I find it odd the the implant the machine intended damaged the gown, but the implanting of the mp3 somehow didn't
Yeah that title pretty much sums it up perfectly
Aaa I'm so exited you're doing it!
I always love hearing Roger Craig Smith in ANYTHING. I don't think I've seen him as a villain, though, except for maybe in Regular Show.
When I first saw the visuals for this game, my mind jumped to a canadian cartoon called Storm Hawks.
FYI I have my Gen 1 iPod running.
oh, that's what I was thinking of!! I forgot the name!!
@@spectacularbear It's been a while since it was on. Though someone has it on their UA-cam channel.
I'd like to note: you *Still* do need combo variety to keep high ranks
In this episode, Woolie gets a… Corb?
I played Elite Beat Agents back in the day and loved it, but I think it impaired my ability to play these kinds of games. EBA goes by noted, and it took bouncing off of Rythm Thief and Necromancer to realize the difference between notes and beats. Hi Fi Rush is making me think I can try Necromancer again.
Kale 'Definitely not a Villain' Vandelay
awww yeah I can feel this is right in you guys alley to have a kickass LP
I love how the basic light combo forms a full measure of 8 beats once beat hits come in. X X X X (rest) X boom boom!
HERE WE FUCKING GO BABY
TOO BIG TO FAIL, TOO BIG TO FAIL!
FoR tHe AlGoRiThM
Incredibly jealous of all the X-Box and PC havers right now.
this is literally what i thought a spiderpunk game should be something like. not like sony's spiderman, but more of a beat-em-up/character action game with combat like nevan and the hunting horn that had built in musical elements. some parkour and webslinging sure, but not even close to the same amount as in a sony's spiderman. maybe something like an expanded sekiro, that'd be the way to do it.
13:11 the hard way becomes the easy way at that age?
1:22 I did not notice this at all
He forgot to somehow add FLCL in the title.
36:51 I love this Bill & Ted reference
The last time I watched thirty seconds of gameplay and knew I had to buy a game, I bought Disco Elysium. I think I might have to give this one a go.
This reminds me of how I used to play tony hawk 1 and 2 back in the day, always skating to the music. Trying to time my Ollie's and landings to the beat
during cutscenes, i can't tell if what i'm looking at is 3d polygons or 2d animation.
Hell yeah! I can't wait for Woolie to preach with a confident, knowing smile about how rhythm and beats are supposed to work, and then proceed to fuck it all up.
It’s really funny watching all this bravado from woolie, and then 2 feet over is pat who is absolutely cracked at this game.
Found an XBOX One the other day for $60 Killer Instinct was the first game I downloaded. But then I found out I can play THIS over the cloud. Outside of a few graphical hiccups the game plays great and it's surprisingly responsive!
That title is so perfect I got a stroke reading it
Reggie saying "at least the apple product dies" took me out lmao
Well this is good timing, I just beat the game last night. Bought it immediately after seeing Pat play like 15 minutes. Can’t believe this was shadowdropped, this game is 10/10
Man, 6 years passes by real fast
Woolie said it's a perfect game on the podcast but I disagree. It lacks blackface.
B-B-B-B-B-B-B-...... BLACKFACE.
Put on black face to the beat
@@tiagomain1409 some would say to "the drums". If you will
This brings me back to the first day I plugged in my original Xbox. Came with this game called "Jet Set Radio Future" and my six year old brain was just like, that sounds dumb as hell. Played that for many hours, still don't quite understand why to this day.
Can't wait to see Woolie go up against the samurai enemies.
Ok, I'm sold. Definitely getting this. I love Rhythm games, and I love Spectacle fighters (I know they are called Character action games, but thats such a stupid name. How many games are there where you play a character in a action game? The description helps nobody, while Spectacle fighter is the perfect name for stylish action games.) Combining the two? Genius!
How to make you like a character under 5 seconds: Chai
Kind of a bummer they just kept one of the sharpest, best looking games I've ever seen at 720p. Really feels like something they should've gone out of their way to fix before starting.
I was a little puzzled by that. I guess it would have been prohibitively annoying to re-work stuff on the capture side, while streaming no less, to at least allow 1080p? It definitely looked incredible when I played at 3840x2160.
The title says it all
