I think you should provide your source for your contention, as it's generally known (falsely or otherwise) that it was invented in Germany (even us Brits acknowledge that :-) ). A scrap 'taper roller bearing' is best, as the resultant ground pigment can be filtered through a strong magnet. .... Stand Oil is sticky and viscous, preventing the pigment being ground too fine. Lapis Lazuli is a feldspathoid stone similar to granite. ...from which potters clay comes from as granite is ground in rivers in flood. The tiny clay particles are flat and hexagonal, clustering in little clumps. When a potter needs to make a delicate handle for a tea cup, the potter will "Sour his clay" for many months. Lapis Lazuli loses it's rich blue colour if subjected to acid conditions, it reverts to a dull grey granite. So souring must be kept 'alkali' ... Biological washing powder is perfectly adequate. The bacteria dismantle these little clumps of Lapis Crystal. Old clear PEP fizzy drink bottles are ideal for storing the suspended Lapis pigment. By trial and error drain off the Lapis suspension that does not settle after 24 hours or so. This material can be left to settle out over the next few days. ... Then by all means follow the procedure mentioned in "Il Libro Del Arte", by Cennino D'Andrea Cennini. The first 5% yield is a rich blue, and subsequent 5% of 95%, & 5% of 90% & 5% of 85%...etc. will be progressively a much lighter blue. NEVER USE GLASS to grind this precious pigment! ..Place the oil and pigment in a clear thick plastic bag (clipper bags are useful, and use a printer's hand held roller. ...roll back and forth in multiple directions. Then cut the corner of the clipper bag, and squeeze out the pigment needed. Clipper Bags with say ten or twenty shades of blue can be used. Please pass this information on to conservators! ..If you know of any?
