I’ve been watching home run highlights today. I’m convinced this is the hardest hit ball in the history of the game. The swing, the sound, just amazing.
I was born in 88 and grew up absolutely loving this guy. I was mesmerized by his stance/swing. Nobody my age even knows who this dude is :( so underrated
That was a football stadium. Any baseball stadium today and that ball was into the parking lot. And at sea level in thick humidity, give a guy some credit. Sheesh.
I don't know that I've ever seen a ball explode off the bat quite like this home run from the Big Cat. The sound, the swing, the trajectory. Truly one of the all-time home runs.
I agree Joe. MLB originally had the distance at 585 feet. it was changed the following day to 529. Part of me believes MLB doesn't want to see Mantles reported 565 record broken
THE BIG CAT!! One of my favorite childhood players on the Expos and later Rockies. Always a great hitter, could have easily won an MVP award between '96 and '98 with the insane numbers he put up.
He had ahead of him those guys who were juicing like McGwyre, Sosa, Palmero, Gambia, A-Rod. But even then his 1998 season with 47 HR, 150 RBIs, .318 BA was MVP material
Article I read says a baseball travels 9% farther at 5280 ft vs sea level. So if this were at Coors Field it would've been like 600 ft and completely out of the stadium
I've been a Rockies fan since their inception in 1993 and this is by far one of my all time favorite Rockies moments. Galarraga absolutely went beast mode on that baseball. And the fact that he smashed that ball in Florida makes it even better. Had he launched that baseball in Colorado, it would have easily been the farthest homerun in history.... hell, it would probably still be flying!
Awesome to see this great moment again! Big Cat was one of my favorite all-time players and I remember coming absolutely unglued when I saw this the first time. Arguments aside over the actual projected length, he crushed that ball probably harder than I've ever seen another ball hit in almost 40 years of watching baseball! And given the situation, bases loaded off a very tough Kevin Brown who had only given up 1 HR in 70 IP prior, this is without a doubt, one of the most epic blasts in MLB history (and not even hit in Colorado lol)!
Whatever they say, this is the longest home run in MLB history, the wind is not an excuse, in an American football stadium, almost above the entire second floor, without steroids, pure power. The Bug Cat from Venezuela
I was glad I was able to find this. The distance was originally announced as being 573 feet and then was revised to be 529 (probably after realizing that would be further than Mickey Mantle's longest homer). I'd love to see Statcast on this. I also think Kevin Brown had buzzed Galarraga in an earlier at bat, so I believe there was some payback involved.
The official longest home run is apparently a 575-footer Ruth hit in 1921. I've heard all my life that Mantle and Jim Rice had hit 600-footers, but apparently (and sadly) not.
I have read that baseballs travel about 8-9 % further in Coors Field. If he had hit this ball at home, it would've traveled... 529 feet by 1.08 = 571 feet. I came here because last night Trevor Story hit a 505 ft HR in Coors Field, the longest ever hit there. That's really impressive, but this Galarraga's HR is out of this world.
More payback the other way. They didn't like his bat flip and how he admired that moonshot, Dennis Cook dared the Cat to charge the mound by beaning him and Galarraga obliged.
I was at this game and couldn't believe where this ball landed. I had never seen anyone hit the ball into the 2nd deck let alone halfway up the section.
I remember watching this game. Initially this shot was measured at like 582. But then they changed it to 479 or something. The announcers even commented that that was bunk. Saying I guess someone decided no one could hit a ball farther than Mickey Mantle so they changed the distance. I still think that's the hardest hit ball I've seen!
I remember watching this highlight on Sportcenter when I was kid and 24 years later it’s still one of the most impressive in game home runs I’ve ever seen.
Look, anyone that knows/follows baseball should easily recognize this as one of (if not THE) longest blasts in MLB history. Direct from the Rockies site/media, it was originally measures at 579 then reduced to 529. There are a lot of conspiracy theories as to why that reduction, but it probably does have something to do with baseball wanting to keep Mantle in the record books with the longest HR. MLB is VERY political and if people don't think that other factors are at play here, they are sadly mistaken. If you need further proof, just look at the joke of 468 ft that ESPN's HR Tracker calculated this mammoth shot at in 2011. 468 feet? What do they think we are, idiots? Most likely that technology is ok for today's games that have 20 camera angles of HD quality video, but clearly they have insufficient data to correctly calc this HR's distance. As an example of proof, look at some of the HR's Judge hit in the HR hitting contest in 2017 AS Game in Miami. Granted, different stadium, but LF dimensions were similar between the 2 parks. Judge hit several bombs over 500 feet, but Galarraga's blast certainly appeared to be going well further than any of them. They probably had it right the first time at 579, but clearly, Big Cat hit this thing at least 550!
The ball coming in by Brown was probably in the mid 90's unlike a home run contest. Galarraga's stepped into his swing with all his force. Nelson Cruz and Manny Machado have gone to this open stance. I think it's effective because pitchers don't know where to pitch you.
Agreed! In my opinion, I think it was closer to 600. The camera caught it only after it started rolling back not where it landed. It looked like 10-12 rows from the top. That was beyond mammoth!!...even the sound was different! It’s a beautiful thing!
They projected Mcgwires upper deck shots in this stadium as 500 feet. His were a couple of rows back. Big cat hit this one ³/⁴ of the way up. 550 ft easy
You’re 100 percent correct but not just any football stadium....that Miami stadium is HUGE! The top deck is way up high and he hit to the upper third part of it....damn near out of the stadium.....for my money it’s the farthest ball ever hit by anyone other than Bo Jackson.....because he’s hit some unmeasurables too lol
I’m almost 50 and used to watch the Expos play in the 80s and 90s. I was sad to see the Big Cat go play for someone else, but man, he was a beauty. I was happy when his career took an upward trajectory, despite the few health setbacks he suffered. As for this home run, he hit that ball like it owed him money. 😳
I played mens softball in the 90's and I paterned my swing off of Andres. His open stance allows for BOTH eyes to be facing the pitcher and his recoiling then exploding thru the pitch deveolps all the power you can develop from your body. He recoils back then goes forward with his hips, then his hands. Its perfect for slow pitch but this guy was so good he did it in fast pitch like a boss. Once I perfected this stance I was driving the ball way further than a typical stance.
Kevin Brown was nasty in 97 as well too. Being born in Miami in the 80s I became a huge fan . This was one of the only moments being young and appreciating the other team... That Ball landed somewhere never thought possible (Dan Uggla hit a game trying one there off Kevin Gregg of the Cubs a game I was I at I couldn't believe it). The Big Cat became someone to watch for me. This was such a great moment
when he was on the Giants, Galarraga hit one completely over the left field bleachers and almost hit the big glove, at 500 ft. hopefully they post the video of that one.
I was at this game back in the day. I looked this up, as I was reading about something and it reminded me of this highlight. Glad to see it was posted on UA-cam in 2021. That was a titanic blast.
I have read that baseballs travel about 8-9 % further in Coors Field. If he had hit this ball at home, it would've traveled... 529 feet by 1.08 = 571 feet. I saw the original Colorado Rockies play a couple of times, and before Coors field was built in Denver. They used to play at the old mile high stadium, and I was at a doubleheader with Colorado and San Diego. Big cat went up to the plate, and when he swung that bat you heard it through the entire stadium, it was incredibly powerful when he played.
Not only was I at this game but I was also at the first game of the 97 world series and my seats were right up against the back of the wall in left field in the same section that ball was hit and let me tell you for one thing when you are that high up you cant even see left field only center field and right field. That's high up this ball definitely traveled well over 500'
Their final measurement was bunk! That's the longest homerun I've seen in my life. I remember watching it live and telling my grandmother "that's gotta be the longest HR ever"! It was 424ft to the right of the old scoreboard in the power alley in left field, at field level! This ball was not that far from being hit out of a freaking football stadium! Still amazing!
There's a lot of good discussion on distances here, just consider one thing: I watched hundreds of Marlins games at this stadium and can only remember a few other players even reaching the 3rd deck (Miguel Cabrera, Dan Uggla, maybe Pujols?). And those HRs barely reached...maybe the first 3 rows or so. Galarraga's went like 20 rows deep and was by FAR the deepest HR I've ever seen in that stadium...no one before or after ever came even remotely close to his. Also, it was Dennis Cook who beaned him later in the game!
I remember that homer Galarraga hit at the Pro Player was officially measured somewhere around 475 ft, but critics, including Rockies Manager Don Baylor argued that ball may have been a 500-plus footer. Galarraga was a beast when in the best of shape. Great homer, great memory.
I was at that game with my grandfather. I was a 15 year old Miami kid. My grandfather has passed. I’ll never remember watching that homerun live. It was a very hot and humid day.
As Skip Carey would say" That ball was ticketed". Open stance, stepped into it, timing perfect, huge dude(maybe on roids), hanging 90mph slider from Brown(definitely on roids). All the factors which made this era of baseball interesting to say the least.
I remember that game, pro player stadium, I was on the top left, that was a massive and potent hume run directly to the top of the seats over the left field. Andres Galarraga the big cat, a great player, on those days and with "no steroids..."
That open stance adds a lot of power. My dad had me model my stance after Andres'. It helped take me from a lead off batter to hitting cleanup. I always the loved the look on a pitchers face when my short self took them yard.
+Jefferson Johnson This has got to be one of the longest homeruns ever hit. Period. Yes, we see long shots these days but I would not say "routinely" as long as this one. This is an uncommon homerun.
Mid -ay of the upper deck in that stadium? Not a baseball stadium which would be curved towards the infield. That area was so far away they just put a tarp on it. I had heard at the time they called it at 561.
The ball landed in the 20th row of the upper deck in LF at Pro Player, a spot which was 404 feet horizontally from home plate and 82 feet above field level, 13 degrees inside the LF line. The time of flight was 4.97 seconds, and the weather was 87 degrees, with a 13 mph wind blowing roughly right to left. Using these inputs, Hit Tracker determines that the Big Cat's famous homer came off the bat at 117.9 mph, and would have covered 461 feet if it had made it all the way back to field level.
The distance of this home run was first announced as 573 feet, then changed to 529. Almost 20 years later, ESPN’s Home Run Tracker stated that the ball traveled "only" 468 feet. That's downright ridiculous! How could the first estimation be wrong by 105 feet? 105 feet! And the second one by 61 feet? The ball landed on the 20th row of the upper deck. Watch this video in slow motion, stop it when you can see clearly the wall of the left field, and calc the distance from the wall (behind Marlins' left fielder) to the 20th row of the 2nd deck (at the left of the highest of the "Jackie Robinson 50 Years" paint). If, for instance, that point of the wall was at “only” 365 feet from home plate, would you believe that the ball landed only 103 feet further? The first deck had some 15 rows, and that's about 50 feet. Now add 65 feet to the 20th row of the upper deck, and another 15-20 feet between the wall and the first deck. I'm talking about 500 feet, and these are conservative numbers! And clearly, Trevor Story’s 505-feet homer at Coors Field was shorter than this. If this was a 468 feet HR, it's actually IMPOSSIBLE that Ruth or Mantle had hit 560 feet home runs.
When I was a kid and I went to that stadium my step dad told me and showed me where Galarraga hit that ball....I honestly didn't believe it. If you went to that stadium and saw how far it was to hit it there....you would not believe it. Until you see this video.
I think it’s crazy he hit this off a slider, sinker. Meaning he didn’t have the added velocity of a fb coming in. He had to supply all the power. Amazing.
First Rockies game I ever went to was at the old Mile High Stadium. He hit a rocket just like this at Mile High like I haven't seen anyone else do ever since then
I’ve been watching home run highlights today. I’m convinced this is the hardest hit ball in the history of the game. The swing, the sound, just amazing.
I agree. Never seen one more perfectly crushed. Watched it live on TV and was amazed.
This and glenallen hill for me. 😅
Keep in mind, that was a FOOTBALL stadium!! The ball landed 6 or 7 rows from the top! Had to be over 600ft! It had to be!
Either this or that bomb that Bonds hit against the Cardinals that went into the hazy night and you can't even see it.
I don’t understand why this homerun isn’t more well-known. This is one of the longest Homerun severe hit. Jesus Christ. That ball was pulverized.
Cursing..not necessary😞
I was born in 88 and grew up absolutely loving this guy. I was mesmerized by his stance/swing. Nobody my age even knows who this dude is :( so underrated
Me too bro
Depends where you're from
Born in 1990 and I know About him
The cat!
hahaha totally agree.
That was a football stadium. Any baseball stadium today and that ball was into the parking lot. And at sea level in thick humidity, give a guy some credit. Sheesh.
patton303 nah, this steroid head was nothing special. There were better, like McGwire.
Nah, McGwire did have some bombs, but I think this is the furthest ball I've ever seen hit.
Nah
Yeah. Mos Def
Nah Homie G. It ain't even like that.
I didn't realize he hit this off Kevin Brown! Even more impressive!
Facts me too
Terrible hanger lol
I think he hit another grand slam off of Brown in the playoffs In tbe late 90’s when Brown was with the padres and galleraga was with the Braves
Kevin Brown was coming off a year where his ERA was under 2
Absolutely. This was during Brown’s prime too!
I don't know that I've ever seen a ball explode off the bat quite like this home run from the Big Cat. The sound, the swing, the trajectory. Truly one of the all-time home runs.
Andrés Galarraga, my childhood idol. I still have newspaper clippings of his accomplishments in the major leagues. Now, that was power.
This is the most obscene destruction of a baseball I've ever seen. lol
How far was it measured?!?!
+tristen539 actually 529
Tim Thompsonk
I agree. I've seen a lot of videos and I still think this is the furthest ball ever hit.
I agree Joe. MLB originally had the distance at 585 feet. it was changed the following day to 529. Part of me believes MLB doesn't want to see Mantles reported 565 record broken
In 1987, I saw him launch 12 straight BP fastballs on to Waveland Ave in Chicago. He was a strong dude
But even then his 1998 season with 47 HR, 150 RBIs, .318 BA was MVP material

tinton3w true, out to left there’s just bleachers at Coors, out to right there are three decks.
It would have landed in Aspen or Boulder lol...
Out of the stadium my left eye. It would have left the state.
My favorite homerun.....ever
Guy almost hit it out of a football stadium
Me too, I was watching it live on fox Saturday baseball getting ready to go to my park n rec game
THATS WHAT IM SAYING!!!!
Crazy how the camera didn't even pan high enough to catch where it landed initially. That was easily hit three quarters of the way up the upper deck
Most impressive home run of my lifetime, I mean its a football stadium and he still almost hit it out of the stadium
When people say longest HR, my first thought is this one by Galarraga . It looked like an aspirin when it landed
I've been a Rockies fan since their inception in 1993 and this is by far one of my all time favorite Rockies moments. Galarraga absolutely went beast mode on that baseball. Love Kevin Brown's reaction. Galarraga hit that ball so far that KB had to check and make sure he still had both of his...
Glad so many people were there to see it.
🤣underrated comment

That bat flip tho 😭
I've watched a lot of HR's and I think this may be the furthest. He stepped into the ball and hit it dead on.
Most impressive game homerun I've ever seen. I was 17 at the time so I was amazed.
More amazed than the first time you heard dark side of the moon?
They need to upload his epic homerun in San Francisco back in 2001 that hit the large glove deep in the left field bleachers!
856 feet
minimum
856 miles*
857
That is one of the top 3 longest home runs in Baseball history. They didn't measure it correctly. Galarraga "The Big Cat" is definitely a legend.
This home run just is so amazing to watch. An absolute bomb and every person in the ballpark knew it when the bat hit the ball.
Grande Andres !!
I saw this game on TV back in the day - glad someone captured it. The Big Cat was a beast.

That’s the longest homerun ever.

I've never seen a homerun trot with so much swag lol
That follow through. The skip and the bat flip are as epic as the shot itself
Absolutely!
One of the greatest Home Runs I ever saw👍🏿
The longest home run in MLB History.
That ball needed its own flight attendant!
And the MLB never took out the measuring tape, and never will..... this is for sure, the longest homer in history
This was projected at 529 feet. For reference, McGuire and Canseco have the longest projected home runs at 545 and 540 feet, respectively.
That Rockies team was so much fun to watch and that lineup was loaded!!
I remember turning on TSN everynight during this time and always seeing the big cat and larry walker highlights lol
Eric Young, Ellis Burks, Dante Bichete, Larry Walker, Andres Galaraga, and Vinny Castilla. Probably one of the best 1-6 lineups ever.
probably the longest homerun I ever saw... amazing
630 feet
journalist americans =529 .....
@Indrid Cold yea, it hit 490 feet away and was still that high up
when he was on the Giants, Galarraga hit one completely over the left field bleachers and almost hit the big glove, at 500 ft. hopefully they post the video of that one.
i saw that game in TV and i always remember that one...it was impressive as well. I´m still waiting for the replay too XD

I LOVED watching this guy smash the ball. As a Braves' fan, we got him on the tail end of his career, but he was a force!
Juiced or not, man, that was a beautiful thing!! Wow!!
Let's talk about thin air in Colorado now. Oh wait, this was in Florida! Well, if he had hit it at home it would have come down in Kansas.
Wyoming. Coors Field is pointed North/Northwest.
Technically it would have gone towards Utah
@@JABoyle3875 You're right!
I mean, this has to be the longest HR caught on video. God bless that ball was obliterated
I always enjoyed watching Galarraga at bat. He was a great hitter.
That's easily one of the longest home runs I've ever seen. Up there with Kingman (1979, at Wrigley), McGwire (1989 - Kingdome) and Glenallen Hill (2000-Wrigley, on the roof.)
I was hoping you were gonna say glenallen shot.... Man oh man...
Hill and Kingman were both mis measured both over 560 feet
McGwire was 1997 before being traded to St Louis, off Randy Johnson

It was 424ft to the right of the old scoreboard in the power alley in left field, at field level! This ball was not that far from being hit out of a freaking football stadium! Still amazing!
That ball was the furthest I’ve seen hit. It looked like the size of an aspirin when it lands
Furthest ball ever hit absolutely
434
what a beautiful sound!
Andres Gallaraga .. the Big CAT!
#CRUSHED!
that BAT FLIP tho!
I remember watching this as a kid, back when baseball was fun
Yep. It's so pitching dominant since the roids stopped.
Thats gotta be one of the longest homeruns I've ever seen, especially conaidering thats at sea level.
Saw it live and my jaw fell open. Man.
You were in the stadium?
@@EddieDuranLLC Naw, it was on TV.
I was at that game with my grandfather. I was a 15 year old Miami kid. My grandfather has passed. I’ll never remember watching that homerun live. It was a very hot and humid day.
I've watched his swing 50 times trying to figure out how the fuck this is possible. 530 ft on a humid day in Miami. Some things just defy reason.
Ki699 yep
Low hands
Steroids, that's how
As Skip Carey would say" That ball was ticketed". Open stance, stepped into it, timing perfect, huge dude(maybe on roids), hanging 90mph slider from Brown(definitely on roids). All the factors which made this era of baseball interesting to say the least.
Without a doubt this is the longest HR ever hit especially with a wooden bat.
I remember that game, pro player stadium, I was on the top left, that was a massive and potent hume run directly to the top of the seats over the left field. Andres Galarraga the big cat, a great player, on those days and with "no steroids..."
The Big Cat from Caracas Venezuela and the Baseball Club Loenes del Caracas
That open stance adds a lot of power. My dad had me model my stance after Andres'. It helped take me from a lead off batter to hitting cleanup. I always the loved the look on a pitchers face when my short self took them yard.
i use to bat like him and chipper
You just don't see home runs like this these days
HabsFanMTL88 Giancarlo hits dingers just as far as this routinely, and Joc is beginning to. You totally do see home runs like this nowadays.
You don't see people using roids as much either.
routinely? I think you need a dictionary.
Always loved his stance.
lo de Galarraga no era cuento. Pura fuerza natural...
We all know this is the longest homerun ever hit
I was at the game. I never heard a ball hit that hard
El gran gato de Venezuela, Andrés Galarraga.!! 🇻🇪
That's as far as I've ever seen a baseball hit there. Nearly out of the stadium.
Amongst all home runs ever, def in the top 3. It’s perfect.
The big cat andres galaraga absolute bomb I’ll never forget this homer being a marlins fan
I was there!!! I remember this hot day!!!
Clobbers the fuck out of that ball and pimps the fuck out of it. What a legend
Lmaoooo I laughed way harder than I should have
El Gato…that was crushed! Only guy in MLB history to lead the league in hits AND strikeouts in the same year (1988).
Can't hit it if you don't swing.
0:05 that sound is all you need to hear to guess how far that went.
I think it’s crazy he hit this off a slider, sinker. Meaning he didn’t have the added velocity of a fb coming in. He had to supply all the power. Amazing.
First Rockies game I ever went to was at the old Mile High Stadium. He hit a rocket just like this at Mile High like I haven't seen anyone else do ever since then
I remember channel surfing as a kid and literally stopped on this at bat
Next swing was an absolute bomb
CRUSHED!!!!!
I will debate with anyone that this was the furthest hit baseball in MLB history....
He straight killed it. A bomb. What a shot. Great video
Man!!! He got ALL of that!!!
The first mesure was over 600ft but for some unknown reason they took it down to 529. FAIL
i think they just didn't want him to break Micky Mantle's record for longest homerun.
This guy deserves to be in the HOF. Missed 1999 fighting cancer, hit 28 HR's his first year back.
I remember watching this as a 15 year old (the game was on national TV) and couldn’t believe my eyes.
I watched this as it happened
Chase Knighton In the ballpark, or on TV?
+John Noonan tv.. i was 10 yrs old.. idk how i remember ..
Longest Homer in MLB history
