This reactionalysis (along with all of my Eurovision 2024 ones) were shot mid March - This one in particular around the 13th of March. At the time of filming this and all the rest, Croatia was No.1 in the odds - I do understand that Switzerland is now the favourite to win. What are your thoughts?

you should maybe search for the video Baby Lasagna Rim Tim Tagi Dim Slovenia (he performed there today) he improved his vocals so much, he is working on it with a classical singer from Croatia. He is my winner but I would also be happy with Nemo (Switzerland) as winner

Actually, you are not dramatic but somebody finally told me why this song is that contagious. I wasn't paying attention that rimtimtagidim rhythm goes through entire song, even as sublimation msg. And that ending, it is resolution, climax. Like orgasm you been waiting and postpone for tree minutes because you enjoying foreplay! Finally ended and you can relax now! Great analyze mate! Thx! Btw. He wrote the song and music, produced and mixed by himself in his room on his PC. Only artist this year who's done everything by himself. Also, this was his second performance as a singer ever! He didn't know how to hold mic. Kudos to that!

He didn’t write the song with Eurovision in mind at all, at first it was just supposed to be a filler in his album and his friend suggested he submit it to Dora (the national competition). At first he was a reserve and got put up after another picked artist stepped down. I’m glad that happened as it has become one of my favourite Eurovision entries ever

Man, I'm croatian and this is the first time I've heard this song because I deliberately block all things eurovision from my mind. Yeah, it is crazy infectious. If you're interested, the riff and the resolution at the end make use of an old croatian folk motif from the region of Istra where he, the vocalist, is from. A bit modernized, but still recognizable.

@@TheMuserResolute Try to type into youtube - Two part singing and playing in the Istrian scale, by UNESCO. It is a musical scale that is unique and almost about to be extinct. As a musician you'll probably appreciate to learn something new.

Thanks so much for the great analysis. Fun fact, the main riff "rim tim tagi digi" is actually from the on-line service (sample library) Splice (Marko AKA Baby Lasagna even said what is the name of the sample and from which library). I think it's pretty genius he managed to make a song, Eurovison winner contender, out of a 2 second riff he found on Splice. If he wins he will be a poster boy for them and they will be able to say "you can even win Eurovision if you make a song using our samples". Some people who don't like the song say it's boring and repetitive, I understand the repetitive argument, but I don't find it boring, I feel like it's a wild rollercoaster ride or a train that keeps going (which is also in line with the lyrical content of the song, leaving one's village to go away to the city, maybe by train). So, in conclusion, I think some people love the song, some people hate the song, but nobody can deny - it is EXTREMELY catchy. A definiton of an earworm. He might not win, but it will be stuck in many a mind after Eurovision. 😂 Rim tim tagi digi RIM TIM TIM!

The rig ti tagi dim percussion sounds like the strumming of the tambura which is used in folk music in Croatia, that's why that rhythm is so important thematically :)
Thanks for this - I love to hear musicians actually getting into the songs that others criticise muscially. It's great to see, I love your positivity.
I want to give a bit of context on the background to where we are now (this may be long). So, firstly Baby Lasagna (BL) was not on the original participation list for Dora, he was the first reserve (so broadcaster hadn't chosen him to enter) and then an artist dropped out and he was drafted in. He had half the time to prepare for the national final. After a shaky semi, within 3 days, by the final he was really good - the song was always there, his confidence wasn't. And that's where you are here and what you see in the NF.
Then, during the pre-party season he performed. I met him in Madrid press - he was stressed in general, he's very introverted and then he came out on stage. Already you could see a performance improvement. Then, during Madrid (and I highly recommend watching this live on Eurovision Spain's channel), from around 40secs to 1min20, you can clearly see a switch from where he is trying to psych himself up and energise himself, to where the crowd is energising him, and the perfomance morphs into something incredible - it was such a joy to witness.
Then Amsterdam (I'm only talking about the ones I was at in person here), which was last weekend, was again a HUGE improvement even over Madrid. His confidence is there, he's leading the song, carrying everything vocally and enjoying himself, and there's nothing I enjoy more than watching a performer enjoy themselves on stage. He's ready for Malmo now and I will be PISSED if the juries mark this down too much. Because this is the ultimate underdog story, and I personally relate to and love the message (being a small town boy to moving to a city and ultimately another country to find a career). I think so many people in Europe will be able to resonate to that message. Can he win? Maybe, but honestly just having this song come on in the night I cannot wait to be in the arena for the jury final, and then I'll be in the press room for the actual final (or Eurovision village depending on what the best option is to soak in the atmosphere). Ahhhhhhh you've managed to make me so excited again for the contest and the performances in Malmo this year.

Btw, I really recommend a few other performances Marko (Baby Lasagna) did during the recent preparties. I especially loved the one in London. He is so full of energy that you cannot help, but watch and listen to the very end every time you see him on stage. And I never got bored of the song despite hearing it hundreds of times at this point, probably.

As well as the music side, there is the thematic side. This is not primarily traditional, it's not primarily modern, it's not primarily postmodern, it's metamodern. It's not ironic. It's sincere. When he says "maybe they also know our dance" he knows full well, the city folks will not. It is poignant. The dance is life, but he must let it go to move to the city. When he says he will miss his cat, he is not being a stupid peassant, he is just telling the truth about the need we humans have for connection - for friendship, even with pets!
I love rock music that has a continuous rhythm with the style of resolution Baby Lasagna uses. It makes my depressed mind happy. :D

Through that song, he wanted to show our customs, and how it is done in our country, such as lace, dance and other traditional customs!
This rhythm is fully inspired by Croatian folk music that no one really listens to because it’s not something people record. The sound is typically produced with “gajde”, a bagpipe of sorts, but there can be other instruments too.
It’s the sound older generations in Croatia danced to during weddings and village celebrations up until World War 2, which is when larger scale modernization started. Since, it’s become a relic of the past and something that is now played only during specialized cultural events. Though, to be fair, there are places in Croatia where it is still going strong in some shape or form.
But it does have a very distinct rhythm that is absolutely catchy. I can see how it would remind you of cha-cha, but I think it’s worth noting as cha-cha is far more prominent of a genre and credit should go where credit is due.
Look up Croatian folk dances - especially from the Istria and Dalmatia regions - and you’ll see what I mean. The dance and all. 😉 That said, this is a truly authentic Croatian sound adapted for a modern, global audience - and definitely leveraging all the “must-have” features of a winning Eurovision song.

He has more control over his voice now. This was his first ever performance as a singer in his life and he was nervous, as he said.
He used to be a guitar player in rock group 'Maantra' doing only backing vocals untill 'Dora'.

i thought it was a little karaoke sounding. the voice volume in verses was too loud and he missed a few notes due to stage fright, but he was not out of tune like a lot of performers at dora.
watch amsterdam performance from few days ago. he sounds much, much better and he is more confident.
