    These Bmw fans wont turn on this way. Which really sucks because I can't even test the new fan and see if I just got 2 bad fans. The plug for the fan gets 12volts all the time, just check for power at the plug. But even after that you have to determine if the signal wire/ecm/sensor has a problem or if the fan is just bad. I gave up BMW's are such a pain in the ass to work on. 😔

    It's actually feeding through the dme and resistor pack. I'm surprised he doesn't know that. But he's doing a video. This is why other guys get screwed with German cars you need a scan tool and a tester to check these fans properly.

    From my experience I've taken the fan off my BMW and bench tested it with a 12v battery and just like you tested it it wouldn't turn on, then I went further and tested it at the fan controller on one side, and nothing, then on the other side and it turned on. Moral of the story is try to clean all contact points of wires before saying fan is bad. once all of them are cleaned up it might work.

    Fan is control by the DME on control wire by 10 % to 90% of duty cycle. Fan it self has controller in it. There is no relay for BMW X5 fan.

      You're absolutely correct. I guess anybody can put up a bad YT DIY.

      Of course there is a relay, in the positive side you have a 150amp relay that is located in the wheel mud cover, but you are right, the ECU manage the fan and this video is so bad.

      So basically the control wires turns a transistor in the fan assembly on?

    Fan controlled by the DME. The fan could be good and there's a fan activation code stopping it from working

    • @Yophillips3272
      @Yophillips3272 3 роки тому +1

      Interesting point, but how do you get rid of the code and get the new fan to turn on? Assuming the signal wire isn't bad.

    That not gonna work, you need to trigger the signal in order for the fan to work.

    You can test some fans like this but not bmw fans. Maybe older models yes but not these.

    You need to do more research. That's not how BMW fans (since 2000) work. The 2 thick wires are + and -, the thin wire is a digital carrier wave from the CPU that activates the fan and controls its speed. Direct current to the fan does nothing.

    • @Thatguyremy

      So then what is the proper way to test it

    • @peoplepower9415
      @peoplepower9415 4 роки тому +1

      There is a solid state switch in the fan and it gets turned on by a signal from the computer the third small wire

    • @lindseywebb9953
      @lindseywebb9953 3 роки тому +1

      @@Thatguyremy I ran a small wire from the signal wire to fan then hooked up a pos and neg wire. My fan then came on like a air plane propeller.

    • @danielbaca7068

      I tested the fan motor same was just connected directly to the 2 wires coming out of the back of the fan. I wanted to test it right off the plug connector like In this video. But I figured I'd research it before I send to many volts in there 😅

    • @Yophillips3272
      @Yophillips3272 3 роки тому

      @@Thatguyremy The only way I can figure is find someone with a similar BMW and plug your fan into their car and see if it works. You can add power to the fan motor itself but that doesn't tell you if the module on the fan is bad or not.

      Coolant temp sensor on lower radiator hose (possibly and from what I've read so far). They say if you unplug it or it's bad that it'll run the fan wide open. I bet that's it for you.

    • @mychannelbannersus
      @mychannelbannersus Рік тому

      That's signal wire controlling speed communicating with ecm, you can't test the BMW fan like that, even good fans won't turn on.

    My fan is working but it is stuck on high all the time even with a cold engine where should I start to look for the problem?

    • @Yophillips3272
      @Yophillips3272 3 роки тому +1

      Probably the coolant temp sensor. But also could be a bad fan. I don't know how to diagnose these things but a coolant sensor is like $20 I would start there.

    complacently wrong testing ,unplug fan switch (on right side of radiator hose) your fan should work on high speed ,if not your fan is bad.

    This is completely wrong…
    You have no idea what you are doing or talked about at all..
    The giant red wire is power…. From a fuse…
    The ground is the giant brown.. you said that right..
    The small wire is not relays and all that crap you said. It goes directly to the engine module. Supplying voltage to it does nothing.. its a 12 volt square wave low current signal that you can’t duplicate by hand… you check it with a scope. If you have the correct signal from the dme, and your power and ground, then the fan is bad. Terrible video…
