I had no idea they weren't huge successes at the time! 😱 They were such important parts of all my friend's childhoods lol
That's like over a decade after the film's release which is why the term "cult-following" was used. Dark Crystal and Labryrinth were box office failures at the time, then the very children who were the target demographic for those movies grew up and appreciated jim's craft.

I found the movie at my local grocery store's video rental section in the 80s and loved it. No one knew even heard of the movie. Then around the year 2000 everyone loved it.
It was this and Nightmare Before Christmas.

Went to art school in the early 2000's. I just wish Henson could've lived to see how obsessed we were with his work, and how much it shaped our worlds and our paths, particularly "Labyrinth".
Same. As a high school graduation gift, a friend of mine got me a book about Henson’s art that I still have on my bookshelf.

I was a kid when “The Dark Crystal” and “Labyrinth” came out and, although I didn’t see either in theatres, I watched them countless times on video. They were go to movies any time you assembled a group of kids.

To be honest, even TV executives are astonished at the voices and sounds Frank Welker can produce. I'm thinking of the documentaries on the Real Ghostbusters series, specifically, Season One, if you want a specific reference.

Next to his roles of Fred Jones and Scooby Doo, Dr. Ray Stantz and Slimer from The Real Ghostbusters are two of my favorites. Also I really enjoyed his work on Muppet Babies, G.I. Joe and The Transformers.

It is considered one of the best movies of the 80s. It's literally in my 'best movies of the 80's' book - and it still plays occassionally in cinemas. 80's is rife with well loved movies (there are hundreds of em) but Labyrinth is one of those hundreds.
I can only assume you're exaggerating for effect. It wouldn't even make it into the top 50 movies of the '80s.
Jim was such a rare kind of person. It seemed like nothing bothered him and when it did, he didn't lash out or take his anger out on anyone. He just waited to see what happened while keeping a positive attitude that everything was gonna be alright.

McKenzie Eby I think we probably would. Despite some faults in his actions and choices, Jim was still a really great guy. That’s shown clearly by his ex-wife still being friendly and professional with him. Clearly she still thought highly of him, and him of her. They were both fantastic people with fantastic talent. Also, I wouldn’t really say Jim lied. As was mentioned, his wife knew about him cheating. They were just both too awkward and non-confrontational to talk about it.
Communication is a huge deal. If you both know and don't talk about it/fix it, who's fault is it really??
My dad cheated on my mom. She knew. She always knew, it's something you pick up on when you know someone on an intimate level.
She didn't hate him. She was hurt. But she knew she was dieing, and refused to hate him for making a mistake and being weak. Despite all his mistakes she still loved him.
She never confronted him. As much as I hate what he did, I still love him. Despite his mistakes, I still love him.
You can hate what someone does, and still maintain some level of respect and love for them. Just saying.

As a millenial, Muppet Babies was a galaxy brain move. Obviously the franchise was already world famous, but Muppet Babies and Fraggle Rock just cemented its position in the hearts and minds of all of us born in the 80s as well.

I've never payed too much attention to the muppets, much less Jim Henson, but this docu series it's so interesting and so well made, that now I can really appreciate all of Jim's creations and work, as well as his huge team. Thank you Defunctland!
The 80s were a hard time for fantasy movies. Krull , Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Neverending Story, Willow, etc. we’re not popular with adults and critics but us kids who grew up with them consider them classics.
I bet Jim would be really happy that The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth are classics now.
Had they been instant successes since day 1 with critics, audiences, fans, and at the box office, that would've made Jim proud of what he made. He would've also won Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Animation as well.

Literally the most engrossing UA-cam series this year. This deserves wide acclaim.
This whole series has the quality and detail of something that would air on pbs or as a true documentary and is just plain amazing in every way
I grew up with Muppet Babies without knowing their real life version on the movie
It was a delight to watch the little clip on Take Manhattan
Kinda had both the great muppet caper and baby muppets ep where they parodied the jetsons

Such a damn shame about Labyrinth. It's a great movie and it's really just depressing that he never really got to see the eventual recognition it got.
Thankfully before he passed he was well aware of the cult following the film had.
I think calling it a "great film" is a bit much, when the lead actress was horrible and the movie made no coherent sense.
It is a classic because of the great songs and the wonderful visuals, but I think that's it. The story is a gigantic fever-dream mess and the lead actress utterly fails to carry the film.
Dark Crystal and Labryinth came out when I was a kid and I enjoyed both of them. Didn't know one didn't do as well as they hoped and the other lost money until watching these videos.

I'll never understand how Labyrinth and Dark Crystal weren't received well. Those movies are incredible and some of my favorites of my childhood.

@@Krystalmyth Death happens to everyone, albeit way before it should've in Henson's case. It's easier to reconcile with someone you looked up to dying than them being unfaithful, especially since dying isn't a choice and cheating/breaking your partner's trust is.
David MacNeil Well with all Jim had to go through it was hard to keep their relationship together. But they still managed to love each other regardless...
I wish the original Muppet babies were on Disney+
Problem is, there's copyrighted film stock footage used in it (Columbia/Tri-Star's _Ghostbusters_ created by Dan Ackroyd & Harold Ramis despite using a brand title that required signed approval from Filmation Studios & Gene Roddenberry's _Star Trek_ just to name two) which Disney does NOT own...yet.
Eh, given how the muppet show on Disney plus was censored quite a lot, it might be better if it isn’t there.
@@daelen.cclark It was not censored at all. Some episodes include very brief text disclaimers, specifically saying that they wish to acknowledge problematic footage rather than remove it. Any edits were due to music rights issues. And even then, the Disney+ versions are far more complete than any DVD release in the past.

but during the time Fred and Velma were absent from the recent shows and only Daphne returned. Welker was however at Marvel doing Megatron on the Transformers as well as work on the G I Joe mini series. Don Messick was still Scooby.
I havent said this before. But the Muppets are my absolute favorite things, and Henson is literally an idol for me. I'm glad you've taken the Herculean task of covering so much of his career

No, what they used actually qualified as Fair Use, but the REAL danger is that if people were reminded of Muppet Babies and had a clear digital copy of what it did without any repercussions, then Disney and UA-cam would have clear examples of what qualifies as Fair Use that would stop all their lawsuits in their tracks.

For those who weren’t around at the time, Jim did not know he was dying. To confirm, just watch interviews of those who knew him. They all describe his death as a shock. There were a few celebrities who passed away from the same thing due to tainted blood transfusions or during surgery. Made the medical world double down on making sure everything is good before donation. Off the top of my head, I remember Jim being one and another being tennis player Author Ash.
Except Henson died from bacterial pneumonia?
@ChrisSDParker actually, Henson died from streptococcal toxic shock syndrome caused by streptococcus pyogenes. Despite aggressive treatments, the infection had already weakened many of his organs resulting in his death at 1:21AM May 16, 1990.

There are only a couple of actors for whom I cried at the news of their death. Lucille Ball was one. Jim Henson was another.

I think the two true entertainment geniuses of the 20th century were Walt Disney and Jim Henson. Those two men created the two most recognizable characters, maybe ever: Mickey Mouse and Kermit the Frog.

Seeing Sam and the Hipster in those seats melted my heart a bit honestly. I didn’t even now they existed until I started watching this series, but just knowing the muppets that started it all weren’t forgotten by Jim is just beautiful.
I loved the line where they asked why Kermit looked so much better than he used to. That was a great meta joke.
I like that Jim kept them in pretty good condition despite not getting the same advantages Kermit did.

The Muppets Take Manhattan is my favorite Muppets film. I actually felt that the semi-serious take was a breath of fresh air.
I seriously found myself thinking; "Wow, that amusement-park channel should see this, they coul...."
I cannot believe that this is the same channel, as not only am i entertained throughout the episodes, it is one of the few instances that i feel like i am watching television.
With the difference that television is not this enjoyable.

I was very surprised when I first heard it was a commercial flop.
I loved it and thought everybody else did too.

Agreed. I saw the dark crystal and labyrinth in the theater with my mom. Watched over and over once they aired on the movie channels and bought the VHS tapes. It's hard to imagine that it was a box office fail. Our family loved those movies

Jim Henson's cameo in the Christmas special feels almost meta, saying "I like it when they have a good time" only to immediately move on from the successful festivities to go do something else he considers necessary and productive. It feels like how he moves on from project to project, constantly with a new creative idea. Thinking about his cameo this way makes it way deeper, but I could be looking way too deep into it

It's also so weird to me that Labyrinth did so poorly, since literally everyone my age (mid-late 30s) I know loves it about on par with The Princess Bride and Never-Ending Story, nerds and "normies" alike. I guess we all watched the hell out of it on VHS...
I know!! I was legitimately surprised that it didn't do well. I'm 27 but most of my friends are mid-late 30s and we always praise the movie whenever it's brought up

I don't think I met one person who didn't care for it. Its such a classic story told in a unique way. They don't make films like that anymore.

I am of a very specific age which makes "Labyrinth was a critical and commercial failure in its day" the most shocking twist in this series of videos to me.
Thank you for including Muppet Family Christmas. It's not only the special with perhaps the most comprehensive collection of Muppet properties ever assembled, but also may just be the most perfect Muppet TV special ever produced. Everyone fully understands the characters, and it's both warm, and laugh-out-loud funny from start to finish.
Honestly as someone who’s only known about labyrinth and the dark crystal for only about 5+ years, I’m surprised that it’s not the other way around. Like I swear that I remember hearing that the dark crystal preformed really poorly compared to labyrinth. But I must be wrong haha
I'm a massive Jim Henson fan (I got married at Jim Henson Studios even) and while I was a fan of yours since you were still making a VR theme park, this series has made me one of your biggest cheerleaders. I truly hope you get a TV series someday as a Showrunner. You've earned it.

I expected this to be a straight forward run down on the history of the muppet babies and yet it's so much more than just that. And the ending that alludes to Jim Henson selling his company to Disney just makes me want to subscribe so that I get a notification for the next installment

I knew it was coming, but dang if I didn't get a lump in my throat when Kevin said Henson had passed away. This retrospective really makes you appreciate his work and makes you wonder what else could have been. We lost Jim too soon.

I'm so surprised that Labyrinth was unsuccessful at the time! I totally saw it because of David Bowie. I had never heard of the Dark Crystal, despite being the perfect age for it.

To be fair, that's virtually ALL he focuses on. If you extract the muppet baby segments from this 28 minute video - they last about 3 minutes.

Frank didn't originally voice Scooby. That was Don Messick. Though he did voice Fred since 1969.
Yes, I caught that too. Frank Welker only started voicing Scooby Doo in 2002 with the series What's New Scooby Doo. The casting people on Muppet Babies did a great job by casting Frank Welker as Baby Kermit. I swear Frank Welker was a cast member of almost every cartoon I watched growing and even now. Also the rest of the cast was really amazing as well. I did not even know until this year that Baby Gonzo, was voiced by a woman.

I know I’m a couple years late, but I have to thank Defunctland for going into such detail on Jim Henson’s career throughout these videos. I grew up with all of these shows and movies and these videos have had a profound emotional effect on me, much more than your typical nostalgia. Amazing work!

That was probably the most heartbreaking cliffhanger I've seen. We know what happens in the end, but with all this well-written story and buildup, I know the next Jim Henson episode will probably make a lot of people sad by the end.
Robert Ruth I know. I lived through the loss of Jim first hand and it still pains me to the core. Having to go through that pain again is... beyond words. But also helpful because we know we had something so precious that we cry decades after he is gone.

Freakin' love Labyrinth. I can literally quote that movie from beginning to end. And Muppet Babies was the best when I was growing up!
I don't understand why people took a pass on "Labyrinth" back in the day. I mean, they EVENTUALLY grew to love it.

Considering how well it's thought of now, it was honestly a surprise to me that Labyrinth wasn't well liked at the time it came out.
I love the muppets so much, and it's great to learn their history. I had no idea the labyrinth was considered a flop, poor Jim. That is such a beloved classic now.
I hate this “Lets make them babies” trend. Rugrats and Muppet Babies are the only things in this category I will accept!
all grown up is the reverse treatment of Rugrats as it is the same characters from Rugrats except older
hell rugrats did the opposite. and their 'now they're 10 years older' spinoff is pretty crummy aside from its pilot.

I think Disney made a Jungle Book spinoff with that trend in mind. The reason why I brought it up? Because, from what I know of it, they actually tried to have complex development to make them more like their film counterparts in the long run of the second season.

Muppet Babies was such a weird show. They hardly ever left the nursery for any reason. Every once in a while there'd be an episode where one would go in another room or leave the house for a doctor's appointment or something and you'd be like, "wow, they actually got to go outside into the the real world!" It was almost like they were trapped in that nursery like it was a jail or something. So they had to do all the imagination stuff as a sort of mental escape.
