- In this Tears of the Kingdom Challenge Video, I beat all five (or six?) dungeons without ever setting foot on the Surface and triggering the "Hyrule Kingdom" text. If I trigger the text at any time, I must revert to my last save and try again. This requires a great deal of speedrunning tricks, and even a few techniques I invented myself.
As always, this is a scripted video that took a great deal of time and love to create, so I hope you all enjoy!

I just appreciate watching someone who likes the game and experiments with it instead of beating the dead horse complaining about things they didn't like. It's not a perfect game, but it is still fun and I still liked to play it. I like seeing the unique things people do in this game especially your challenges like this.
@@Tatokatin the words of Smallant1: “it’s only boring if you let it be boring.” If it’s too easy for you, then you should add your own challenge. After all, no one knows you better than you. This video is a perfect example of how to make a game more interesting, challenging, and satisfying than even you imagined it could be. Go try to have some fun with this, think of something hard but rewarding that hones your biggest annoyances to muscle memory. The sky’s the limit here.
@@Tatokat okay, clearly I’m missing something. I’ve poured over 100 hours into this game before even beating it and the only time I glitched ever experienced glitches is when I was actively trying to. How did you create a death loop? How does it force you to play the boring way? Is there a video I need to watch or something?
@@Tatokat if you remember to keep food on you at all times, it’s hard to always get stuck at a quarter heart. And worst case scenario, just reload a previous autosave and try to prevent it from happening again.
Getting spoiled for the rest of the game isn’t the game’s fault, it’s the community. The players who rush through everything and don’t take their time to enjoy it are the reason you’re spoiled. Don’t hate the game, hate the players. Unless you mean that you were trying to explore the game’s entire new world before doing any of the dungeons, but again, that’s not entirely the game’s fault, if you’re going towards a dungeon the game will try to urge you to do it. That’s just natural player progression.
This game’s big focus, besides story, is to essentially be a 3D Bad Piggies, allowing you to create loads of cool, functional, and/or wacky vehicles entirely on your own. So of course there would be small rewards for doing that. If you really need a good form of transport besides that, just go back to your BOTW roots and use horses.
And lastly, it’s a combat RPG, and you can’t have a combat RPG without overworld enemies. Their camps are generally pretty hard to miss, so if you really want to avoid them it’s not hard, but obviously you’re meant to fight them, and get better gear from doing so, so by avoiding them you’re kinda just making the game more straightforward and simultaneously putting yourself at a disadvantage.

Thank you! I really love educating folks on things I'm passionate about, and I'm firmly of the opinion that you need to understand how HARD something is to fully appreciate a challenge like this. I didn't want people to think reaction jumping was some catch-all easy solution that trivialized the rest of the challenge, so I took care to show dozens of failures lmaooo.

@@npc_variant_gstfsYou can build a contraption to fly out of a chasm provided you have enough power. I've even gotten out of the chasm beneath Zora's Domain only by climbing (it was extremely long and tedious and not something I recommend doing 😂). Getting the maze roots without glitches is definitely impossible since you need to activate a terminal on the Surface, but the areas beneath Rito Village and the Castle Town Prison might be accessible by flying out of a chasm and into another (you wouldn't be able to use fans though apparently cause it triggers the Surface).
I feel like you could submit this as an extended category for totk for the speedrun website.

100% speedrunners might try this,they have nothing else to do.
I would LOVE to see an "All Dungeons No Surface" category extension! It'd be really interesting to see how they'd route it.

@@SimplySnaps idk if it would help for future runs, but if you get a 3+ multi-shot bow, bullet time and shoot those light panels with flash fruits fast enough you can bypass a lot of mirror puzzles 👀

That would probably be a lot of surface based quests or challenges as this video only did the temples and the paraglider on the surface

It only makes sense.
The Depths challenge required a lot of Power, as they had to brute force their way through limited resources and the fire area.
This challenge took a good deal of Wisdom to figure out how to stand on the surface without actually standing on the surface.
And next time... Well, it sure will take a lot of Courage to finish all the shrines on the surface without ever touching it!

Eh, I don't see Link as an outsider who solves the Gerudos' problems singlehandedly. The other Gerudo soldiers *do* help, and even Link's contribution - blasting away the gibdo hives - relies on Riju's electricity power to work.
He does absolutely help them out, but the Gerudo themselves still played a pivotal role in defending their own town too.
Plus, Link is the Ultimate Special Boy who is just hyper competent at everything. He fixes everyone's problems, that's just his whole thing

Amazing - congrats! This was especially fun to watch because there is a person in Japan doing the exact same challenge, except he is doing it very differently. For cutscenes, he uses shields fused to bomb flowers and zonai bombs to launch himself in the air as soon as they end. He also uses autobuild to make bridges out of wings and hoverstones.
Auto build for wing / cart bridges is such a good idea.

I haven't done testing myself... but is it possible that you could've used a bomb shield to blow yourself forward after placing a wing down (switch to the bomb shield after the jump in the same pause menu that you placed the wing down)?
I don't wanna seem like a boot-licker, but this was genuinely one of the most entertaining gaming videos I've watched in A WHILE.. The commentary, the editing, the sheer, obvious effort, the very great comedic effect... keep going man! Keep soaring and don't touch the ground! And if you do, just reload the save.
For the lightning temple, you didn't have to go to gerudo town at all. Riju is already practicing north of town and you can start the quest by going right to her
Yup, the wings stop triggers. This makes sense to me after watching speedruns. They will use the wings to prevent triggering new checkpoints, so they can instantly spawn back where they want.
This was a *fantastic* video!!! And I gotta say thanks for doing custom captions instead of just letting them be auto-generated, they’re so much easier to understand and are extremely funny to boot, it actually let me get some of the jokes I would never have understood with autogenerated captions!

@@SimplySnaps like the one where you switched the first two letters of the words, and had them spelled as you said them in the captions, so I got to understand the joke! The autogenerated ones would *never* have been able to understand that and caption it correctly, it would have either just made a random guess or not captioned it at all. Additionally all the times you included the sound effects like the airplane noises at the end with Zelda! That’s something that’s funny that the autogenerated ones would never have noted and I would have had no idea was happening

For some reason, a realization came to me halfway through this video that you sound like Timon from Lion King.
Like I watched the Depths video & then started watching this video back-to-back like any other but as you were raging around the middle of the video the thought suddenly dawned on me that you sound _alot_ like Timon.
The image of Timon thirsting over Sidon, ordering Zelda & Riju like dogs or going God Mode on Ganondorf is almost certainly not how you're supposed to watch this video but it made it even better to watch!

1:11:52 The term you’re looking for would be something like “Impatience.” It’s the same as when you’re reading a book and you look away from the page and need to skim to get back to where you are. You’ve already completed everything up to the end so you no longer need to do the early parts, instead you need to skip past the early parts as fast as you can so you can get back to where you were before. It’s a matter of subconsciously trivializing what’s been done and rushing through haphazardly. Daryl Talks Games has a video called “The Two Ways You Lose In Games” that talks more about this and covers more angles.
