While I hate that Dirt Everyday is no longer a thing, I am LOVING what you and Dave are doing. I feel like we can connect more with your projects and I’ve learned a ton already. Keep up the great work!
Man I agree with you about driver insurance! That should be for liability, flat price regardless of how many cars you have. Then have separate policy for full coverage for each vehicle. I tried to get minimal coverage on my second car, and it's basically the same price, just for liability. Crazy! Double the cost for the same amount of driving.
Surprisingly, no smog here in Michigan, at least not yet. Congrats on getting the Jeep running and passing through all the CA BS, I lived there for a long time and remember it was a pain. Guessing it weighs around #3750
In Oregon, depending on the counties depends on if you need smog which i think is funny. i may live at my parents house a few hundred miles away a couple days a year to register some of my vehicles :D
That is a solid day Fred! You need to run out and buy a lottery ticket. CA DMV only 1 hour and also get a pass on the smog in the same day. That is impressive. I don't miss CA regulations at all.
Us many vehicle owners need something like this. I've added and dropped vehicles if I know I won't use them for a period of time. Town hates uninsured vehicles on your property though.
Fred, I came across Dirt Every Day and started watching it and really loved the projects you and Dave were doing. I'm not done watching those but saw you had started Dirt Daily and had a JL you were working on, so I started watching these as well. I like the format, don't try to fill a certain amount of time, just record in sections and the length is what it will be. So in this episode you mention states without smog testing. Well SC has no inspections or smog testing. But, we have very few places to go rock crawling and nothing like the stuff you have done in the past. I'm on my 4th Jeep and took the approach with this one that I would not lift it and go big tires and just try to use driving skill like when I had less money. So 2007 JK with 190K miles, 33s and open diffs. Took it out last weekend and it did obstacles I thought I would need lockers for, I was pretty happy. Keep up the videos, really enjoying them!!
NY here.... After you clear a check engine, there are 8 monitors that need to read complete. Not sure if that's the same as "smog" but if you drive around with your scan tool, I felt like any vehicle just needs to be driven long enough for those monitors to read complete. When they read complete, drive right to your buddy's shop, but don't shut the car off. Have them plug right in and get that inspection computer connected. All set after that.
100% agree with you on insured vehicles vs insured drivers. Though, the case where your car is just sitting somewhere and gets stolen or vandalized is sort of an edge case on that.
The car insurance commentary is right on. I had quite the debate with my agent about how cars laying around the driveway cost the same as the one I am actually operating.. i can only do damage with one at a time.. Kinda unfsir when you prefer to have a handful of raggedy rides vs one new fancy one.
I've been saying the same thing about insuring the driver and not the vehicle for years now! It's so dumb the way they do it, but I'm sure it's because they make more money doing it the way they do it. Congrats on fixing the Jeep and getting it legal!!! Can't believe all of that only took about three days!!!!!!
No smog test here in Eastern NC. Of course not many trails either. You have a nice vehicle with a dependable drivetrain and comforts. I would keep the mods moderate, and use it as a daily driver/trail vehicle. It doesn't have to have a hemi and one ton axles with 40's to be cool.
Great stuff. Happy to see you still at it despite MT decision. Audio editing tip. Current is mono rt channel. Depending on editing software take audio track and copy it, designate one lf channel and the other rt channel. Then check levels on final edit.
Well there are plenty of cabins and barns in Missouri. But there's a couple of different things about inspections. 1 anything under 10 years old, less then 149,999 miles isn't required for inspections. Then any vehicle 96 or newer has to do emissions in certain counties. And older then 96 cars don't require emissions but should have equipment. And lastly all except the under 10 year old rule. All vehicles are required to do safety.
Move to the Ozarks you’ll love it. Clean water clean air beautiful mountains and great people. I live about 30 miles south of Branson Missouri and Arkansas and love it.
Oregon had a deal back in the 70's that you could insure your drivers license so any vehicle you drive has insurance. But then the company's got money hungry and make you insure all your vehicles. I currently have 13 on my policy....
They call it Broadform Insurance now. Have had numerous friends with it. You'll need to talk to an insurance agent/broker, not a call center, to verify if it's legal in OR. CO's fine with it.
Many years ago in some states you could get operator insurance for you as a driver. I wanted to get that when I lived in GA. I had 4-5 Jeeps tagged for road use. I had a good rate for insurance that covered me driving any of them or any other vehicle that was on my license. On the 2 door 👍 oh you should have bought a few lottery tickets that day and week for that matter. Glad to find your U-tube channel, I liked D E D and subbed to your U-tube channel when I seen it. I remember you from way back and then when you headed up JP mag. I should still have one of the magazines license plate some where and the Peterson 4wheeler one too.
Utah is pretty easy on old vehicles. If they are over 25 years old you can register them as a classic and no inspection required. I register all my vehicles as regular and emissions day is the worst, it is almost as stressful as when my kids were born.
Way cool brother!!! I’ve been thinking, if you’re not tied to Cali: move your operation over here to southern Utah!! St George is stupid expensive, but farther out like by @Fabrats shop, it’s not so bad and nicer weather!! No smog, lots of trails, lots of shops with tools, expertise and parts in stock, and lots of good folks to run trails with!! And we would love to have y’all over here!!
Living in Oklahoma where there is no smog or safety inspections, I kinda miss them. The number of unsafe vehicles I see on the road, or the vehicles that are spewing oil smoke is way too dang high.
I'm 100% in agreement on insurance. And I think I have heard of some doing that, but not often. But I should be insured, not my car. What ever I'm driving, I'm covered
Washington state don’t have emissions checks anymore. When I was a tech I used to have to deal with them all the time. Move up north and be closer to Dirt Head Dave
You should live here in ND. No state inspections, rather lax vehicle registration laws, and lots of places with barns. Winters do try to kill you, but Carhartts are good.
In texas they no longer stick a sensor intothe tail pipe... But they do care if the senors are cleared and ready! never heard of this driving method your talking about... we just drive 100 miles and take it to get tested. Never had one fail yet.(have to do this on modern vehicles every time we replace a battery. (oh and love your channel but miss dirt every Day.)
Two things! 1: I will never stop watching your content, but you gotta get better audio that isn’t Mono. I really hope someone in the comments can point you in the right direction! 2: How long are you and Dave obligated to not make content together? My step dad was in an off-road club but I’m a Mini Trucker at heart, and you guys together are Mint
I got a nice little 2 bedroom cabin for rent by the lake in the woods here in North Carolina. Normally $975 but I think Fred has enough references to cut it down to $875. No smog. $13 "safety check" if your vehicle is less than 25 years old, but it's just a money thing, nobody ever fails. No front plates required either...don't you get the death penalty for that in CA? Sign a 1 year lease and I'll build you a damn barn to go with it! I have as much random crap as you do, and I dragged it all out here from Oregon...it's doable...and the cost of living is about HALF!
There’s plenty of places to buy here in Ohio. No smog tests here. $300 for tags!!! That’s insane!! 🤯 Your money would go further here too. Less taxes and you can have guns too. I live on 10 acres with a pond and a fab shop. 🇺🇸😎👍🏻🇺🇸
What a nightmare. We used to have that scam in Alaska to. Every year. Insanity. All the smog shops are closed now. Thiugh i did get alot a cheap cars that didn't pass.
I believe you are located in SLO Co. near where I grew up on the coast. I left there many years ago to get away from the excessive taxes and regulations in Commiefornia. I now live in Tennessee, no smog to deal with and it cost me $98 to register my 2021 Toyota Tacoma this year. I can't even begin to say how happy I am that I made the decision to leave there and seek opportunities elsewhere.
Michigan has no smog testing, no yearly inspection of any sort. I have never had anyone even look at one of my vehicles. New, used, classics....never a check. Only downside. Not a ton of wheeling opportunities. We have them, but nothing like out west.
come back to PA. Here in Adams County we have no smog testing and housing and land are reasonable AND as you know, there is tons of 4 wheeling in the state. Way more than when you left for the left coast.
Just a suggestion but maybe next time point the camera out the front window so we can see the views while your driving, also edit in some overlay music in the videos. I like all your videos though buddy 🤙 keep up the good work! I loved dirt everyday and I will definitely be watching all of yours and Dave’s videos!
Fred, as far as a area that doesn’t check SMOG…. You love Central Oregon (Bend) right? I wouldn’t necessarily suggest inside Bend, but there area outline areas that you could probably find affordable places that would have a shop or barn that would suit your needs. Only Portland has SMOG tests required in Oregon. Just a thought. 🤷🏼♂️😎👍🏼
I have a set of JK axles , The housings are a little weird they were in a YJ, high pinion 30, and a 44 with ARBs and 4:56 gears, complete rotor to rotor
I doubt you'd want to move to the frozen north from California 🤣 I'm sure I could find a place for you though. Your drive sounds kind of like the old PDI test drives we used to do. 10min highway, 10 minutes city driving and 10 minutes rough road (alley).
Just a guesstimate….3920 lbs. Out here in the front range area of Colorado we’re at $25 for the dreaded emissions test at the local Air Care Colorado facility.
Hey! Awesome job on the jeep :) I like your videos from day one because i learn something different every time. 48 and still learning. You might think about Quebec, Canada 🇨🇦 for a little shack and a big garage! Plus lots of snow to play around with your toys. We speak French, but most people our age or younger will be willing to talk to you in English! Anyways, I know it was probably a joke, keep up the good work and thank you!
Fred I have 15 acres that you could build a shop on but it has to be big enough for both of us. I also have a small cabin that just needs cleaned up. Rent free! South Central Oregon
The place you’re looking for will be in Arkansas. It doesn’t have any cities big enough for them to care about smog, it’s warm, there’s enough off roaring to satisfy anyone but the most hardcore desert racer, and it’s very rural and cheap. The only thing is, there is one place on the North American continent that is common to all poisonous, venomous, and bitey creatures… Arkansas.
I agree but imagine if you could list all your cars and then depending on what car you are in the excess could just adjust depending on the car your in
100% agree with the Diver's Insurance, I'd willing pay based on the most expensive/highest risk vehicle, all the other vehicles you are driving should result in a savings by the insurance co as they would be worth less in the event of a total loss. Liability has a minimum anyway so that should not change. Love the idea
While I hate that Dirt Everyday is no longer a thing, I am LOVING what you and Dave are doing. I feel like we can connect more with your projects and I’ve learned a ton already. Keep up the great work!
Fred is the only guy you could sit and watch drive a straight road for 10 minutes without getting bored!
Anybody else find it hilarious that Fred did the drive on a sunny day with his sunglasses on his head! Great vid!
Dang nice day for sure. Don’t think I’ve ever had a day go that smoothly when talking about smog station and DMV.
Man I agree with you about driver insurance! That should be for liability, flat price regardless of how many cars you have. Then have separate policy for full coverage for each vehicle. In Oregon, depending on the counties depends on if you need smog which i think is funny. i may live at my parents house a few hundred miles away a couple days a year to register some of my vehicles :D
Lots of cabins in the woods here in VA. Would love to have you here!

Ball Park of 2500 lbs
I agree with your insurance idea! You should start a company the sells that type of insurance!
Us many vehicle owners need something like this. I've added and dropped vehicles if I know I won't use them for a period of time. Town hates uninsured vehicles on your property though.
broad form insurance
"Driver's Insurance" best idea yet! I'd love to have that. Probably only applies to like 1% of the population but makes sense to me.

Come to Knoxville/Oak Ridge, we have Windrock Park :)
I go to the same shop, they are great!
I usually checkout the gunstore while I wait...

Awesome job Fred! Now it's time to go four wheeling with dirt head Dave!
The wife has a white 18 JL two door hard top , she calls it Esmirelda. Move to Az. Smog checks only down in the air basins. ( Phoenix, Tucson.)
Your welcome to relocate to Michigan, none of that smog stuff here and lots of trails to play in. I have a 3 car poll barn to help you out too 😎
Come to Tennessee, We're playing your Song! Lots of places to live and wheel here and no smog testing. Talk to Ian about it to learn more!!!
You saved that Jeep. Such a cool project.
Utah is pretty easy on old vehicles. If they are over 25 years old you can register them as a classic and no inspection required. I register all my vehicles as regular and emissions day is the worst, it is almost as stressful as when my kids were born.
Move to Iowa. It's halfway to anywhere and cost of living is crazy low. Plus it's close to where Red is. 🙂
Way cool brother!!!
I’ve been thinking, if you’re not tied to Cali: move your operation over here to southern Utah!!
St George is stupid expensive, but farther out like by @Fabrats shop, it’s not so bad and nicer weather!!

totally agree with Fred .. i need a cottage / cabin about 500 square feet , but must have at least 2000 square feet barn
I'm totally with you on the insurance for the person like a medical card. Keep it with you no matter what you drive
Living in Oklahoma where there is no smog or safety inspections, I kinda miss them. The number of unsafe vehicles I see on the road, or the vehicles that are spewing oil smoke is way too dang high.
Well that answers my question as I was driving through town on my way home. "Was that Fred standing on the scale back there?"
I'm 100% in agreement on insurance. And I think I have heard of some doing that, but not often. But I should be insured, not my car. What ever I'm driving, I'm covered
Come to Michigan, man. No smog, no inspection. You’ll be lucky to make it 5 winters without a ton of rust on everything you own but no smog 😂
Washington state don’t have emissions checks anymore. When I was a tech I used to have to deal with them all the time.

Come on out to Oklahoma Fred ! Plenty of room and no vehicle inspections
I can recommend Oklahoma! No smog, and lots of real estate. Crawling in the NE. I agree with the driver insurance plan.
Fred is a mono kind of guy. Stereo is too high tech for him. 😉
3800 lbs is my guess. Congrats on the smog. That's awesome and a big relief I'm sure. Happy jeepin from Maine.
4700? I agree with you 100% on the driver insurance. I guess the only issue with that is who can drive your vehicles. I have four plus one.
I got a nice little 2 bedroom cabin for rent by the lake in the woods here in North Carolina. Normally $975 but I think Fred has enough references to cut it down to $875. Just subscribed to you and Dave. Glad y’all are still out there living the dream
Awesome and fun videos. I look forward to many many more to come.
Come to Oklahoma, where we have no smog, no inspections and driving on any of our roads is an off road adventure. 🤣
come back to PA. Here in Adams County we have no smog testing and housing and land are reasonable AND as you know, there is tons of 4 wheeling in the state. Way more than when you left for the left coast.

I think you'd enjoy Northern Arizona.
House across the street from me is for sale. No smog in Tennessee. I’m 30 minutes from Nashville. Big shop out back on 5 acres. NO EMISSIONS.
Fred, as far as a area that doesn’t check SMOG….

That’s a great day for CA smog and DMV! 😊
4,150LBS is my best guess. Nice job Fred. Always good to see what you are up to. I live in A town and have been watching DED for years.
Man I sure do not miss living in a place that does a emissions testing.
Move to ME where the vehicle brake inspection is passed if the stops coming into the shop bay.
In some states you can get broad form insurance that is like what you described
Come back to PA. We only have to worry about emissions in a few counties.
These videos make me want to work on my own truck
In Hudson Colorado we don't have emissions and we are just out side of Denver
I doubt you'd want to move to the frozen north from California 🤣 I'm sure I could find a place for you though.
Your drive sounds kind of like the old PDI test drives we used to do. 10min highway, 10 minutes city driving and 10 minutes rough road (alley).
Alright Fred, I'm falling asleep here! Where's the welding, fabbing, and wheelin!
I'm digging the dual glasses set up, gonna have to try that myself.
Funny those of us that wear glasses do that.
A like for drivers insurance. Great job on newb sock! Cant wait to see what's next.
Fred...you and Dave had the best show on Mototrend. Now it's more like "Motorboring". "Dumb and dumber" with cars.
I 100% agree that insurance should be for the driver and not the vehicle, I've been saying that for years,
Great Job and 4135 for Weight. Keep up the grea work!
Just a guess on your curb weight would be right around 4,200 with the soft top, no carpet, backseat, and interior panels.
Just a guesstimate….3920 lbs. Out here in the front range area of Colorado we’re at $25 for the dreaded emissions test at the local Air Care Colorado facility.
Fred Iowa has big barns and no smog tests. The only deal is you and myself and few other jeep people here in Iowa go on ultimate adventure.
I think Stef Schrader would agree that you need a Parsche!
My new, stock but fairly well loaded 2 dr Rubicon was 4350. Probably close to 4800 now.
HAHA fun stuff I just had to do a drive cycle on my 2004 Jeep Liberty to pass the Emissions here in AZ. I feel your pain
Can't find my original post so...3590 without driver! Thanks Fred.
Hey Fred! Just wanted to let you know that they're are counties in California that are Exempt from smog!
El dorado is one, I've only had to smog my vehicles once and after that just yearly reg fees
🤫 cough Humboldt cough
Yeah but it’s still in California 👎
Mesa County in CO has no emissions testing.
I’m so thankful that I don’t live in a state where a smog test is required. I’d be screwed!!!
Move to Arizona, if you are not in the Phoenix or Tucson areas you don't need a smog check.
Do you still have the vipermud truck keep up the fun videos Utah doesn't have it as long as your out of happy valley
You had an awesome couple of days. Keep up the good work!
Who hates 2 door wranglers? We miss our 2 door JK. For daily driving always took the 2 door over the 4 door.
I use to live in commifornia and had to live through that crap. Come to Texas. No smog out here on the country
Hey! Awesome job on the jeep :) I like your videos from day one because i learn something different every time. 48 and still learning. You might think about Quebec, Canada 🇨🇦 for a little shack and a big garage! Plus lots of snow to play around with your toys.
The only thing is, there is one place on the North American continent that is common to all poisonous, venomous, and bitey creatures…
Arkansas.
The problem with insurance is that Some cars are safer then other and some have a higher risk to them like a sports car.
I agree but imagine if you could list all your cars and then depending on what car you are in the excess could just adjust depending on the car your in
I live in a testing state. You are on the right path with your drive cycle test. Be patient. It will also need to run the evap test.
Lots of places here in Nevada don't have smog. Just need to avoid the large cities
Awesome achievements, Fred!
No smog here in Washington and small houses with barns or large garages are no in short supply.
100% agree with the Diver's Insurance, I'd willing pay based on the most expensive/highest risk vehicle, all the other vehicles you are driving should result in a savings by the insurance co as they would be worth less in the event of a total loss.
