Daytime swordfishing involves a lot of time and money. One of the most important things that is often not properly researched before getting to the swordfish grounds is how to deploy your tip rod line. You can have the best daytime swordfish set up with the best daytime swordfish rig and if you tangle your line, you are not fishing.
If you want to learn how to daytime swordfish then this video is for you. Knowing the proper daytime swordfishng techniques to deploy and fish your tip rod is a critical part of swordfishing. Knowing how to execute this will ensure you spend more time fishing, less time dealing with tangles and ultimately save you a lot of frustration and money on tackle.
For our daytime swordfishing set up, we use the Lindgren Pitman sv1200 model. This reel is similar to the Lindgren Pitman s1200 model. The main difference from the Lindgren Pitman s-1200 model is that the sv1200 has a variable speed dial. The process to deploy the tip rod will be the same no matter what reel you are using.
In this video, Captain Pedro brings you aboard the Pescatarian, our Ocean Runner 2900, to show you one of the most important daytime swordfishing tips to ensure that you can effectively deploy and fish your tip rod.

do you do video on deploying two rod a tip rod & a buoy rod
That’s a great question! We actually are working on the edit now for a video to show how to deploy the buoy rod. We should have it posted the last week of this month.
Hello Joseph. The video showing how to reply and fish the buoy rod is now posted on our channel. Have a great Thanksgiving!
Great video. You fishing N Floyd’s wall or straight out of key largo?
I have fished Floyd’s before but it’s a far run from Miami and the times I made the run it has been very crowded. I like north key largo. That’s where I’m at most of the time. Sometimes we fish off downtown Miami but that’s a very unforgiving bottom.
Thanks for the support! 🤙
I would like to Start Sword fishing? How do I Start?
If you check out our Swordfish 101 playlist we have all the videos on there on exactly what you need to do to set up all your gear, rig baits, the gear you need on the boat and how to deploy your line. Once you have all of that done, you really need to go out in your area and try different spots looking for bait on the bottom. Here in SE Florida we fish anywhere from 1200-2000ft.
You will want to find spots that you are marking bait on the bottom because swordfish are a migratory species and they eat a lot as they continue to migrate.
Once you find that spot, you need to keep working it and see what depths the fish are migrating through.
If you find a good area with bait but don’t catch a fish, don’t give up on that area because just because there wasn’t a swordfish there today, it doesn’t mean one won’t be there the following day.
If you have Garmin electronics, check out our playlist for Garmin. We have a video on there to show you how to adjust your sonar settings to mark bait in deep water. Those steps can be applied to any Garmin transducer but you will need at least a 1k chirp transducer that can be changed to low chirp.
The last thing I would tell you is keep at it even if you don’t catch the first few times. Swordfish are extremely hard to catch. I would also recommend that you keep logs either on paper or on a spreadsheet of wind direction, water temperature, depth of water, bait that you use, speed of the current and maybe even write down notes for yourself so that you can refer back to when the conditions are like a similar day that you fished before.
Once you catch one, you will never want to catch another fish again! We also offer charters on our website in case you are interested, we will teach you everything you need to know. Our website is PescatarianFishing.com
Good Luck!
Can you tell when you hit bottom while you're moving, is it obvious?
The short answer is yes, you can tell but it is not obvious like if you were bottom fishing and the lead thumps the bottom. You have so much line out that it doesn’t thump the bottom and to your point, because you are moving, the reel keeps letting line out. But, when you hit the bottom, there is a noticeable difference on the reel with the speed that the line is coming off the reel.
In the beginning I would recommend that you put your hand on the spool or your fingers on the side of the spool so you can feel the difference.
It takes a little practice and then you will easily be able to tell.
@@pescatarianfishing Thank you.
@alligator801 you are welcome. You also want to make sure that when you are dropping you don’t slam into the bottom at a high rate of speed because the bait will keep going and the leader will get snagged onto your hook causing your bait to be balled up. You won’t notice this until you pick up to reset and all the time you put into that drift will be wasted.
GREAT video
Thank you! Thanks for the support on the channel!
