Most of the hype that surrounded Bad Buddy pre-release was because of its casting; Nanon (Pran's actor) was the lead in a popular sci-fi show called The Gifted, and almost no one thought that he'd act in a BL because he was already a fairly popular and established actor (and unfortunately BL can sometimes be seen as just an "in" into the industry). Add that to the fact that he was already really good friends with Ohm (Pat's actor), and that Ohm's fans sometimes like to joke that he's so charismatic he'd have chemistry with a shoe, and a lot of people were just excited to see how they'd work opposite to each other in a romantic context.
tbh i didn't expect this pairing at all bc i've been a fan of Nanon (Pran) since 2018 and i never thought he'd ever venture into bl but look at me now, i'm obsessed with this series 😆
The hype around this series was so big, first Nanon, one of the best gmmtv Actors who had not play a Bl series, paired with Ohm, one of his friends and a very well known Bl actor. And also the director P'Aof who had made the bests bls of the channel.

For the record, I was also surprised that Pran's possession of a reversible frown/smile sticky note did not prompt Psynergic to speculate whether Pran has grappled with issues around depression. As a psychologist, observations about mental health often enrich his reactions. But then, Pran's underlying sadness--as portrayed by Nanon--becomes more apparent in the subsequent episodes. (And as of ep 6, is not definitively established onscreen. Just hints, like the sticky notes.)

Yay, so excited to see you react to this! I felt the same way about the hype and while I was interested in it when it was announced a year ago, I honestly wasn't feeling it, even after the first couple episodes. But, I absolutely love Ohm and the director Aof, so I stuck with it. After about ep 3, I started getting really into it and I have to admit that the acting and Ohm and Nannon's chemistry is top notch. Ok, now to watch more than just your into. 😀

I don't think Bad Buddy is considered a lakorn, it's listed as a BL not a lakorn. A lakorn if I remember right is about straight relationships. Unless, you're talking about a lakorn and I just missed the title in your comment?

Gulf was a BL actor but ever since he signed a contract with Channel 3, he said that he's only going to do lakorn dramas unless Mew is his partner. Thus, why I thought lakorn and BL are 2 different genres because if they were the same, why would Gulf say he's not doing BL anymore without Mew and was going to focus on lakorn instead?
A little late but made the time to watch this reaction and I am honestly really happy you decided to do this one. Yes it is very hyped but it has a really good reason to be. First of all I love these boys so much and their friendship is everything! I have seen the previous work from both and they are definitely two of the best young actors at GMMTV which makes this series even better than you can expect. In my opinion at least. Btw fun fact the man behind the register at the shop is the director, P'Aof. He likes to do cameos in his own work. Didn't expect him to come in episode 1 though. I'm curious what you think of the upcoming episodes, will definitely keep watching the reactions 😉

I was waiting for this one though because who would have thought Nanon would go on and do a BL, I certainly wouldn't have. Now I understand why he said yes and really happy he did. As for Ohm, I have seen all his BL work and he has never disappointed me. But yes this is a special series for me and I'm happy it's the start of my weekend every week ❤️

@@Psynergic mix and match! How about five BL reactions per week, time permitting? Seems like you binge record anyway, so you can keep doing that for older series, just dole them out slowly. Two for a recent series [2020-22], two for a classic series [2019 and earlier], and then one reaction to something "fresh" in the current week. Plus, at least with a current series, you won't get viewers [this writer looks in mirror] bugging you for multiple episodes per week because we want to binge reactions to stale series before they get more stale. After all, you can't go faster than they get released.
So, I just finished watching your reaction and I love it! I obviously don't know where this series is going since ep 6 is just coming out today, but I will say that I also hope they deal with more of the issues facing the LGBT+ community. One thing that this series has going for it is that the director, Aof, is a gay man, so at least he does have that perspective. I don't know if that will translate into this series, but so far, I haven't been disappointed in any of his series which is something I can't say for many people. Excited to watch your next reaction to this! Keep up the great work!

I definitely appreciate a series that "gets gay right," as many BLs just don't. Aside from depicting how homophobic parents warp their kids' lives* and an occasional coming out scene, the genre doesn't do much of what Shawn asks for at the end. And if it did, I am not sure it would still be BL genre so much as LGBTQ+ genre. I'd be delighted if Bad Buddy pulls off being both simultaneously. Gaya sa Pelikula succeeded. And recently Gameboys, Lovely Writer, and We Best Love each blurred the (imaginary) boundary between genres as well, while still being clearly BL. I've learned not to expect "LGBT truth" from BL, so long as their characters and scenes don't feel inauthentic (see Tonhon Chonlatee and Nitiman). That said, Bad Buddy 5 by itself blurs the boundary line with remarkably authentic emotional beats...definitely be interested to see what unfolds in 7-12 ahead. *--Bad Buddy has clearly set itself up to deploy the heavily-used trope of toxic, homophobic parenting. Here's hoping they make it feel fresh.

@@fangurks Having reread my original, months-old comment in order to answer the simple question, I realize I want to reply to the whole with further thoughts. First, let me acknowledge that my foreboding about homophobic parents in BB proved unfounded. When the moms and dads finally learned what was up with those two randy lads, it turned out their hang-up was something else altogether. So, by that measure, BB did make it feel fresh. Second, since it's clear from the comment I value a BL that blurs the boundary with LGBTQ+ genres, let's acknowledge a series that did not exist when I wrote the comment in December. Heartstopper (UK, 2022, Netflix) is an LGBTQ+ series that blurs the line with BL. (Note to Shawn: Netflix appears to be tolerating reactions to this series. Just saying.) I wish Thai BL could occasionally achieve something close to that blend of young love and real LGBTQ vibes. OK, with those preliminaries out of the way, on to your question. I distinguish bad series from disappointing series. A disappointing series should work--good plot, good actors, good potential--but for some reason it just doesn't click and falls short of expectations. A bad series is one that doesn't make sense, has wooden performances, and just fails to engage (among other potential deficiencies). Both series you ask about, Tonhon Chonlatee and Nitiman, disappointed AND they are also bad. TC was undone by leaning too heavily into homophobia as an antagonistic element, especially the overreliance on the tired jealous girlfriend trope. Nitiman just failed to take off at all. Of the two, TC is clearly better than Nitiman. But since you specifically asked about autheticity: Nitiman is very much in the traditional BL mold "I'm not gay I just like you." It makes no attempt to approach LGBT reality on issues like identity or self-acceptance. TC is better but its homophobia overpowers the story. Of course, such analysis is highly subjective, and your subjectivity will vary.

I love that you always have something to add, you know, with your psychology background. You have some interesting insights on the shows! About Bad Buddy, I think the hype is mostly because both actors are reeeeally good, Ohm (the muscle one hahah) have some background with bl's (I think he participated in more than 6) and although it is Nanon's (the cute one) first bl, he has some fame already cause he's really good in the series he has participated, a lot as a main character. I was waiting for this series since I knew it was gonna come out, but I do get the avoidence of hypes cause usually I'm the same AHAHHAHAHA. Also, I started watching this and I was like "this is so ridiculous, no one keeps this silly competition with their neighbours and take it to this level for some many years" but then I thought "damn, I should know this is 100% possible" HAHAHAHHAHA. Actually, the first thing I thought when I watched the trailer was a thread on twitter that got really popular and circuled the internet (well, at least here) a couple of years ago. This guy told the story of rivalry between his grandmother and the neighbor that has been going on for 50 years, this went so viral here that they made a freaking series about it. It was a small town, and it started when both were kids, it went on when they had their own kids and grandkids and it still happens today. He told everything on his grandma's side of the story, so all the fault goes to the other old lady HAHAHAHAHHA, but it's so funny. His gradma said that the Boi (means Bull, cause she used to call her Cow but in the 90's thought it was too sexist and changed for Bull) stole 2 of her boyfriends and even married one of them in the street - in front of their house -, that Boi killed some of her puppies, that Boi manages to cut the power when she is using mechanic inalators (idk how it's called) to breath better because it's noisy, etc. He even tells that Boi's chicken disapperead from time to time and he knows his grandma has something to do with it, and that she managed to get the small store from the street to not* accept Boi there so she has to walk twice to another store for years to buy stuff, that she even paid kids to annoy Boi* at the house for a whole day, that she put caustic soda in Boi's plants and killed them all, and that the police was involved in their fights so many times they stopped going. I basically summarized the whole thread to you cause I'm pretty sure there's no translation. Actually, I only remembered this watching Bad Buddy's trailer, so I'm guessing for some reason the series they made here was not popular, I even forgot they were gonna do it, no one talks about it. Anyways, all this to tell you: it is ridiculous and stupid, but there are people like that in the world HAHAHAHAHHA. Well, not the series' boys rivalry at the faculties for no reason, not even I - with my brazillian experiences - can explain that. What is that? And why? HAHAHAHAHH. Ah, I forgot the part of the thread* that reminds me the most about Bad Buddy: his grandmother's children and Boi's children, somehow, always got along. His grandmother's son (the guy who made the thread's uncle) even got married to Boi's daughter, and neither of them showed up in the wedding. Would you look at that hahahahahah. New subscriber here! I liked your reactions, and will definitely continue, and binge-watch all of these in the coming hours and days as I wait for the next episode from GMM. Just wanted to share that I personally excited waiting for this series because of the plot and mainly because this is Nanon's first BL. And they didn't disappoint me, the chemistry of these as the story progresses is phenomenal. Some of the scenes were actually feels like a recycle from other BLs, but because of their chemistry, it made me feel it was unique. I'm saving my other comments for your other episode's RVs, I'm happy that I have found this reaction video of yours.

LOL No one and I mean no one knew we would end up with this level of quality. To say I put it up there with ITSAY is saying a lot but it's firmly in my top 3 and I had zero desire to see it when it came out.
ITSAY had the wisdom to stop after five quality episodes. Sustaining this level of brilliance across 12 is a much tougher challenge. Probably fair to expect some valleys after the recent peaks...and it's hard to imagine anything in the second half surpassing the emotional catharsis and surprises achieved by ep 5. So here's hoping it stays in your top 3, because that means it remained good!

I don't know why I suddenly believe in this show LOL I have pretty strong and unpopular opinions when it comes to BL but they freakin' won me over and I am all in.

But I can't forget how Fish deteriorated after about episode 7, how Tonhon Chonlatee became more unhinged in its final few episodes, or how the conclusion of 2Gether provoked fan rebellion. Gmmtv series, all.. their track record for finishing after a strong start does not bode well. And six Episodes of conflict arising from brawling "friends" and toxic, homophobic parenting doesn't sound nearly as entertaining as Episodes 1-5 were. Fingers crossed that your faith will be rewarded.

Don’t Say No was in a better direction. I don’t get the vibe you describe for what’s coming next. Although the story is familiar I feel like they are telling it in a fresh way. I feel like I knew what would happen in the last few episodes but not how which is interesting to me. Plus the acting is just at a higher level than the other GMMTV shows from the leads. I feel like these two are going to elevate any story line. I won’t be surprised if I am wrong but I hope I am right.

I was waiting for this one though because who would have thought Nanon would go on and do a BL, I certainly wouldn't have. Now I understand why he said yes and really happy he did. @@Psynergic mix and match! How about five BL reactions per week, time permitting? Seems like you binge record anyway, so you can keep doing that for older series, just dole them out slowly. Two for a recent series [2020-22], two for a classic series [2019 and earlier], and then one reaction to something "fresh" in the current week. Plus, at least with a current series, you won't get viewers [this writer looks in mirror] bugging you for multiple episodes per week because we want to binge reactions to stale series before they get more stale. After all, you can't go faster than they get released.
So, I just finished watching your reaction and I love it! I obviously don't know where this series is going since ep 6 is just coming out today, but I will say that I also hope they deal with more of the issues facing the LGBT+ community. One thing that this series has going for it is that the director, Aof, is a gay man, so at least he does have that perspective. I don't know if that will translate into this series, but so far, I haven't been disappointed in any of his series which is something I can't say for many people. Excited to watch your next reaction to this! Keep up the great work!

I definitely appreciate a series that "gets gay right," as many BLs just don't. Aside from depicting how homophobic parents warp their kids' lives* and an occasional coming out scene, the genre doesn't do much of what Shawn asks for at the end. And if it did, I am not sure it would still be BL genre so much as LGBTQ+ genre. I'd be delighted if Bad Buddy pulls off being both simultaneously. Gaya sa Pelikula succeeded. And recently Gameboys, Lovely Writer, and We Best Love each blurred the (imaginary) boundary between genres as well, while still being clearly BL. I've learned not to expect "LGBT truth" from BL, so long as their characters and scenes don't feel inauthentic (see Tonhon Chonlatee and Nitiman). That said, Bad Buddy 5 by itself blurs the boundary line with remarkably authentic emotional beats...definitely be interested to see what unfolds in 7-12 ahead.
*--Bad Buddy has clearly set itself up to deploy the heavily-used trope of toxic, homophobic parenting. Here's hoping they make it feel fresh.

@@fangurks Having reread my original, months-old comment in order to answer the simple question, I realize I want to reply to the whole with further thoughts. First, let me acknowledge that my foreboding about homophobic parents in BB proved unfounded. When the moms and dads finally learned what was up with those two randy lads, it turned out their hang-up was something else altogether. So, by that measure, BB did make it feel fresh. Second, since it's clear from the comment I value a BL that blurs the boundary with LGBTQ+ genres, let's acknowledge a series that did not exist when I wrote the comment in December. Heartstopper (UK, 2022, Netflix) is an LGBTQ+ series that blurs the line with BL. (Note to Shawn: Netflix appears to be tolerating reactions to this series. Just saying.) I wish Thai BL could occasionally achieve something close to that blend of young love and real LGBTQ vibes.
OK, with those preliminaries out of the way, on to your question. I distinguish bad series from disappointing series. A disappointing series should work--good plot, good actors, good potential--but for some reason it just doesn't click and falls short of expectations. A bad series is one that doesn't make sense, has wooden performances, and just fails to engage (among other potential deficiencies). Both series you ask about, Tonhon Chonlatee and Nitiman, disappointed AND they are also bad. TC was undone by leaning too heavily into homophobia as an antagonistic element, especially the overreliance on the tired jealous girlfriend trope. Nitiman just failed to take off at all. Of the two, TC is clearly better than Nitiman. But since you specifically asked about autheticity: Nitiman is very much in the traditional BL mold "I'm not gay I just like you." It makes no attempt to approach LGBT reality on issues like identity or self-acceptance. TC is better but its homophobia overpowers the story.
Of course, such analysis is highly subjective, and your subjectivity will vary.

About Bad Buddy, I think the hype is mostly because both actors are reeeeally good, Ohm (the muscle one hahah) have some background with bl's (I think he participated in more than 6) and although it is Nanon's (the cute one) first bl, he has some fame already cause he's really good in the series he has participated, a lot as a main character. I was waiting for this series since I knew it was gonna come out, but I do get the avoidence of hypes cause usually I'm the same AHAHHAHAHA.
Also, I started watching this and I was like "this is so ridiculous, no one keeps this silly competition with their neighbours and take it to this level for some many years" but then I thought "damn, I should know this is 100% possible" HAHAHAHHAHA. Actually, the first thing I thought when I watched the trailer was a thread on twitter that got really popular and circuled the internet (well, at least here) a couple of years ago. This guy told the story of rivalry between his grandmother and the neighbor that has been going on for 50 years, this went so viral here that they made a freaking series about it. It was a small town, and it started when both were kids, it went on when they had their own kids and grandkids and it still happens today. He told everything on his grandma's side of the story, so all the fault goes to the other old lady HAHAHAHAHHA, but it's so funny. His gradma said that the Boi (means Bull, cause she used to call her Cow but in the 90's thought it was too sexist and changed for Bull) stole 2 of her boyfriends and even married one of them in the street - in front of their house -, that Boi killed some of her puppies, that Boi manages to cut the power when she is using mechanic inalators (idk how it's called) to breath better because it's noisy, etc. He even tells that Boi's chicken disapperead from time to time and he knows his grandma has something to do with it, and that she managed to get the small store from the street to not* accept Boi there so she has to walk twice to another store for years to buy stuff, that she even paid kids to annoy Boi* at the house for a whole day, that she put caustic soda in Boi's plants and killed them all, and that the police was involved in their fights so many times they stopped going. I basically summarized the whole thread to you cause I'm pretty sure there's no translation. Actually, I only remembered this watching Bad Buddy's trailer, so I'm guessing for some reason the series they made here was not popular, I even forgot they were gonna do it, no one talks about it.
Anyways, all this to tell you: it is ridiculous and stupid, but there are people like that in the world HAHAHAHAHHA. Well, not the series' boys rivalry at the faculties for no reason, not even I - with my brazillian experiences - can explain that. What is that? And why? HAHAHAHAHH.
Ah, I forgot the part of the thread* that reminds me the most about Bad Buddy: his grandmother's children and Boi's children, somehow, always got along. His grandmother's son (the guy who made the thread's uncle) even got married to Boi's daughter, and neither of them showed up in the wedding. Would you look at that hahahahahah. It's even sad if you think about it.

I'll enjoy watching your reactions to this, I really wasn't expecting for you to watch it ahahahhaha. It has its silly parts but it's getting better. I do think, tho, that you should 100% watch A Tale of a Thousand Stars (or 1000 Stars) because you, particularly, you're gonna like it! I know it! Hahahhaha. It's so heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, but so beautiful. It's one of my favorites! Also, this will be a long shot, but you should watch The Untamed too. It's a chinese show, and it's not considered bl because it was censored (China, right?) but it's sooo good, some I even don't know how it got passed censorship cause it's so obvious the main characters are in love. It's a wuxia, there's a lot of cheesyness and fantasy involved, buuuuuuut I think you would like it! Mostly because of the characters, they are so complex and it would be fun to watch you analyse them and tell us what you think ahahahah. But anyways.

Just wanted to share that I personally excited waiting for this series because of the plot and mainly because this is Nanon's first BL. And they didn't disappoint me, the chemistry of these as the story progresses is phenomenal. Some of the scenes were actually feels like a recycle from other BLs, but because of their chemistry, it made me feel it was unique.

LOL No one and I mean no one knew we would end up with this level of quality. To say I put it up there with ITSAY is saying a lot but it's firmly in my top 3 and I had zero desire to see it when it came out.
ITSAY had the wisdom to stop after five quality episodes. Sustaining this level of brilliance across 12 is a much tougher challenge. Probably fair to expect some valleys after the recent peaks...and it's hard to imagine anything in the second half surpassing the emotional catharsis and surprises achieved by ep 5. So here's hoping it stays in your top 3, because that means it remained good!
@@johnmaster3748 The consistency is there so far and this director is solid. I had little faith in the beginning but I think this is the right combination of people. They won't let it go south. I don't know why I suddenly believe in this show LOL I have pretty strong and unpopular opinions when it comes to BL but they freakin' won me over and I am all in.

But I can't forget how Fish deteriorated after about episode 7, how Tonhon Chonlatee became more unhinged in its final few episodes, or how the conclusion of 2Gether provoked fan rebellion. Gmmtv series, all.. their track record for finishing after a strong start does not bode well. And six Episodes of conflict arising from brawling "friends" and toxic, homophobic parenting doesn't sound nearly as entertaining as Episodes 1-5 were. Fingers crossed that your faith will be rewarded.

Don’t Say No was in a better direction. I don’t get the vibe you describe for what’s coming next. Although the story is familiar I feel like they are telling it in a fresh way. I feel like I knew what would happen in the last few episodes but not how which is interesting to me. Plus the acting is just at a higher level than the other GMMTV shows from the leads. I feel like these two are going to elevate any story line. I won’t be surprised if I am wrong but I hope I am right.
