Sewing Machine Adventures: Sewing Cushions WITH ZIPPERS!!

  • It's time for another episode of sewing machine adventures, the series where I learn to use a sewing machine! And for this episode I thought I'd attempt to sew the inside of a cushion, along with the cushion cover with zippers attached! Not only was I sewing the entire cushion and cover from scratch with a zipper, I was also making two of them! And I definitely learnt in this episode that sewing a zipper on to anything is way harder than I thought it was going to be, however I feel like I've gotten way more comfortable with my sewing machine, and I've finally started to figure out how it all works! And I managed to successfully sew two cushions, which I am chuffed about! But feel free to let me know what your thoughts were on my cushions with zippers, and if you have any sewing tips or tricks for me (especially when it comes to sewing zippers to fabric) then please leave them in the comments below!

I'm so happy you liked the outcome this time!!! Zippers can be a bit tricky but once you do 1 or 2 of them, you'll be able to "do them with your eyes closed." Loved the fabric choices to!

i love your enthusiasm and sense of adventure with this. i have been sewing for about 60 years. yes, zippers are easier when sewn before the other sides. the fabrics are fun. your bedding creates a feeling of being enclosed in a quiet and comfortable place. when you don't want to show rough edges, just fold them over twice. you would be surprised how much fabric your needle can go through. great attitude of try and try again, and resolve situations as you go along. you should have an amazing sense of accomplishment. keep sewing!!!

forgot to tell you. when you want to do your t-shirt, take one that fits you the way you like. trace it on the fabric. cut it out a little bigger to give you room to sew the seam, double-fold the edges, and you will have a great shirt! can't wait to see the video on it!

oh my gawd, you actually did it!! Not a glue gun in sight! No failed project that you're uhh good at times ;) Way to go. I wouldnt mind that dark one, love it with bright mushroom standing out more. You chould try and make a blazer/top suit using the mushroom patten.. This time make holes for buttons, rather zip. I know, you'd have to hand sew the buttons on.. Surely you cannot faff those buttons it up right?! 🤣Look forward in seeing more sewing show 😁

Just the curtains to do now then.
With the rest of your calico/ inside cushion fabric,
You could make a simple square shape shopping tote bag with straps.
That fabric is brilliant to decorate, with fabric pain, or tie dye, or just paint on ot with acrylic pain.
Love the cushions. Well, done ❤

You should be so proud of yourself! Those are incredible! I know I'd be honoured to have a pillow made by you. Also great theme song.
The extra fabric will be great if you intend to keep sewing! So getting extra isn't a bad thing
Good catch remembering to flip before stuffing the pillow.
Just a few pieces of advice!
It's good to sew the last side halfway shut before flipping it and stuffing it, then finishing the side.
You are correct in that you should attach the zipper first!
The zipper should go on the inside, yes. To make it look neater, give the fabric a hem fold and then attach the zipper to the hem!
That's it! Otherwise you're already learning so fast and doing so well. You're awesome

They look great! to even the seams around the zipper, you fold the fabric over first (you can iron them down to lay flat easier) then sew it to the zipper. There's a lot of 'fold it over first' in sewing lol

Who cares if they're not 100% perfect - YOU DID IT!!! Super proud of you, and super proud of you standing up for yourself with the ghoster. Anyone who does that isn't worth your energy or time. Oh my goodness, I was really chuffed for you when you showed the two cushions fully made, they came out so well! Well done Ant, you are a quick study for real! I had a serious struggle with sewing my first zipper, they are a pain in the bum!
I think making a t-shirt will teach you a heck of a lot.
Here are two tips for you.
    1. If you iron the turnings before you sew them that makes it easier to sew them. Maybe do the pocket that way before you sew it, then it's easier to attach to the t-shirt.
And 2. Add the pocket to the front of the tshirt BEFORE you sew the two sides of the t-shirt together, as adding it after is a right load of drama you just don't need!
Have a lovely weekend! God bless you Ant.

Think you did an excellent job. For pad u should of sewn 4 sides, 4th side with a gap to get stuffing in and cut across corners for neat finish. Not easy putting a zip in, I find zip facing up material facing down gets a neat finish then sew the other 3 sides. I also find continuous zip where u add ur own zipper the easiest to sew cushions with...mind u it's a sod trying to get the 2 bits of zip lined up 😂

I got mad at a dress I was trying to iron the wrinkles out of and bite it well I had gum in my mouth and it got stuck to the dress so I got even madder and threw the dress away. Moral of the story is don’t bite your clothes with gum in your mouth or wear your clothes with wrinkles.😆

I hate sewing zippers too. Now I sew the zipper on first then sew up the side, far more easier. For someone sewing a cushion and cover without a pattern, you have done a very good job. Be proud of your effort. Looking at the finished product I think you did a brilliant job., ok the finish was a bit dodgy, but you learn as you go. I have been sewing for years and sometimes my stiching can look a bit dodgy. When you do your tshirt, use one for the pattern, makes it very easy. Ant, if yoy watch this video you will see how easy sewing a zipper can be doing tbe zipper sewing first. ua-cam.com/video/5vVhdheS1tw/v-deo.htmlsi=RXi9pbDJ3lkrntLU
