Yeah they're a luck thing most of the time, or knowing where they are on the course so you can line yourself up far enough in advance to pass through. IMO they should open when you hit them, so you don't get stuck.

Yup. I forget which armor I used, but it's not the Hyperion armor. I also use the Chocobo you get in Costa Del Sol, as it's fairly aggressive and has decent overall stats, buffed by the gear.

I wanted to 100% this game, but those cactuar gates were the final straw on the camels back that just made me move on and wrap the story up.
