oh man. Same here. I had a knocking sound when turning coming from the steering column of my Prius. My Toyota dealer wanted to replace the whole steering column assembly. Out the door $3132. I saw this video the same afternoon, my intermediate shaft is loose, that I knew. After I said no and got my car back, I rushed to check the bolt referenced in this video. Mine was tight, but upon further inspection, there was a loose cap that is supposed to cover the thicker part of the intermediate shaft. I put the cap back in place and I tried to jiggle the shaft again and it doesn't budge. I shouted out, "You gotta be f#$king kidding me!!" Then I take the car for a drive and there is no more knocking. Thank you for posting this video. I saved thousands.
@@markg999 The cap wasn't missing, it was just separated from the "piston" part of the intermediate shaft. I'll try to post a picture, kind of a newbie to youtube posting.
@@mrppan9599 Ok, I can't upload a picture to UA-cam, but if you pause the video at 1:54, that cap came loose on mine. Then the part beneath the cap when I grabbed it, I was able to shake it and it made the rattle noise. When I pushed the cap back on, with a lot of force, it hasn't made the sound since.
18K miles after following this instruction, my 2012 CT200H still runs great. The noise is gone forever. I now have 122K miles on this car. Thanks again Jeff Cooper. You're the best!
Jeff Cooper you are diamond. I took my car to Toyota Jemca in London to fix the nocking. They diagnosed it, the steering shaft and steering column have to replace and it is gonna cost you £2564.48. You saved my money. I fixed it in 5 minutes. God bless you, thank you very very very much.
Thanks Jeff, I just fixed mine (2012 model), gobsmacked that it actually worked! I didn't have any sockets, so I bought a set for £20 on amazon. I put some foam wrapping on the floor of the car, then wriggled my head underneath the steering wheel, and lay on my back with my bright LED torch beside me, staring up at the steering joint thing. I cranked the bolt roughly 1/4 turn, which was as far as I could make it go. The job took less than 1 minute and it's fixed 3 years of annoying rattling. Unbelievable, wish I'd done it sooner. Thanks for saving me a new steering column, which is what my garage recommended.

Well done Jeff for this superb posting. 100% spot on with this fix. Just done on a 2012 model, ordered the bolt direct from Lexus and 5 mins to fit. Great post and video quality. Most garages will put this down to knuckle joint/steering column/rack etc...... so £2.00 for a bolt saves a lot of time and money. It even feels like a knuckle due to how the vibration travels. Thanks again Jeff 👍🏻

Thank you for demonstrating the issue before tearing your column apart. I am having a similar problem and I can hear the noise all the way up and down the intermediate shaft. It also knocks when I go over a bump, which lead me to believe the issue was at the knuckle/joint where that shaft connects to the steering rack. I have heard this was under recall by Toyota on lower milage units. But no good description of the actual problem. Again, thank you.

Thanks so much. I have had the problem ever since I bought the car 5 years ago but i lived with it because my mechanic said it was an inherent problem with all Toyotas. Will give it a shot!
What happens here is that the Universal joints are worn out, when loose the screw the connector and shaft moved down and lean in that direction compensating the play of the worn out universal joints. that got rid off the clunk noise

Just FYI... Ok guys, I'm new to this forum as I've been also looking for a solution to a "Clunk/Clank" noise that has started after I bought my 15 CT200h. I went under the vehicle to Inspect all of the hardware i.e. bolts, nut fasteners, etc....etc. on the steering/suspension components. I did not find anything loose or missing, bummer :(. I did however do the "Fixes" that have been posted such as tightening the bolt to the steering link assembly, which did not provide any relief. I continued to do the sun roof slide open/close maneuver and again nothing. Finally before changing any thing out, I Intensified my visual inspection on the LH Strut/Coil assembly, I kept staring at the coil and the LH side front fender liner. What did I see? a rub mark between the coil and the plastic fender liner - BINGO! I also noted a clip was missing on the liner and as soon as I Installed it the liner moved away from the strut/coil assembly. Took a test drive and ahhhhh no more clunk/clank. Best 15 minutes I ever spent diagnosing and resolving the Issue I had with my vehicle. I hope this helps some one. Please check the underbody liners, if any are missing the plastic clips, please Install them as it could cause some abnormal noises that otherwise will leave many with a high $$ bill just to solve. Cheers to all!
I like how service will charge you complete new column like it's bag of candy not $1200 part. And when you see it is just a $12 bolt (new original)... I had similar issue and got it fixed for free, but with same "you will need to replace the whole column" story attached to it. It's almost like all you need is to change oil and oil filter, and they say to you "we'll need to replace while engine".
thanks eeryone and josh! no way can this b true, im just getting this knocking now, so fir step, to tighten 1/4 turn, if that don twork, order a new bolt thru toyota and the noise will stop, no need to order intermediate steering shaft??? let mek now!
I tried this bolt shown on the video but didn't work. I have the same noise as the video shows. Is it the bolts that hold the steering rack in place? Like 3 large bolts with bushings
This is common on pretty much all Toyota products. My 06 Camry SE makes the same noise. it just the bushings going bad on the steering intermediate shaft. Some people has fixed the issue simply adding new grease instead of replacing the whole unit.
Thank you Jeff, this video helped alot. In my case, the screw that was slightly loose, causing the knocking, was located towards the bottom behind the black plastic piece. It's right before the next universal joint. It's also a 12mm bolt.
Been chasing this sound on my 2016 Infiniti Q50, replaced all wheel hubs, inner and outer tire rods, new brakes and rotors and new tires. Still making this exact noise, I’m about to buy the lower joint for the steering column and see if it stops. Symptoms while driving are pulling to the right and over steering while turning
Those upper bolts are usually one time only bolts can't reuse them I've had one snap on me when turning the car round once, the bolt head flew off it I guess there a kind of stretch bolt etc the bolt, the only bolt you can use again is the one that connects the column to the rack
Hi, Just have the same problem , lexus CT from 2011, Toyota France say 900€ to repair ... i go to Toyota Germany and solve the problème for 0€ ! Can you add a tag with the French name : croisillon de direction So french people how look on Google to search informations can go here Thanks
Jeff, thank you! I just loose and retightened the bolt and the noise was gone. Question, was the noise a symptom of another more serious underlying condition?
I don’t’ know but it seems like the bolt just get worn and allows for the free play. Actually replacing the bolt would most likely be a longer lasting solution.
You don't know how bearings work, you need to change the shaft universal joint. by over-tightening the bolt you are putting pressure on the bearing which gets rid of the noise. but you risk the shaft shattering and you will loose steering. question is is it worth it? I'd not risk it. £130 brand new from Toyota. I bought a new one and fitted it.
the shaft never "shattered" all the way up until this year when the sound re-occurred. turned out to be the steering rack. New rack, drives like a go cart now. I agree however, it was a bandaid to stop a symptom. Glad you found what worked for you though.
My 2012 Toyota camry had that joint bad..intermediate steering shaft. Had to change. Now perfect. The bolt really should not be the problem ....its tv he joint in shaft...or in the electric steering unit( damper- small piece to replace...or just grease)
That is going to be difficult for sure. I don't think there is enough room to get a drill up there to try and extract the bolt. You may have to remove the steering shafts. I haven't done that one. Good luck!
Nothing to take off, just lay on floorboard and follow the steering shaft up to the u joint. In my case I simply tightened the bolt a bit and didn't have to replace it. Make sure the wheels are turned straight or you may have to turn them a bit to get the correct position to adjust or remove the bolt.
Please help me out Iam from India and own a Fiat Grande punto 1.3 but recently the car has started knocking + grinding noise when i do right turn. The sound comes from left wheel area only on right turn. I have replaced lower arms , strut , mounts , drive shaft , ABS bearing and now jerk mechanics are telling to open gearbox as they suspect something might be wrong with the differential. But i suspect something is wrong with powersteering rack , tie rods or link rods. There is no free play in tie rods but when the mechanic tightened them little more the sound has decreased by almost 75% So please guide me what should i do now. Please please please help me out
Tough to check that out as the car sits so low. Maybe next time you take it for an oil change you can ask to check it out most likely there in another bolt to another U joint in the steering system. Don't know what else to tell you on that one..
Hi Jeff. Did you feel any movement in the car while driving? Mine has started to make a knock feel in the steering and I can feel a slight drift in the car on unjulating roads and where there is a camber on the road.
Blinky Bill no I don’t think so. In order to hear the knock you would have to turn the wheel a bit quicker so you may just feeling the associated turn. We still have the car and has yet to knock again. Hope this helps.
Did this also cause a noise when going over bumps? I thought my suspension was shot when I picked my 2012 up. I checked and everything still looked like new. So I'm hoping this is it. I could feel something in the steering wheel when going over bumps.
It's not a normal bolt at all, as it had splines near the head. I didn't replace it, just tightened it, but be careful not to OVER tighten it, don't want to break it off.

The end of an Era.. We sold the CT200H. What a great car she was.
Old video, but thanks man! This worked perfectly and is a quick fix to prevent a 700 buck repair.
Just remove it and add locktite and put back. But the problem was a loose nut that hold the rack and pinion to the subframe
I tried this bolt shown on the video but didn't work. I have the same noise as the video shows. Is it the bolts that hold the steering rack in place? Like 3 large bolts with bushings
I bought new bolts and replace it, no more noise 😁
Thanks, this helps tremendously for fixing my prius
what is your prius model sir? I have 2011 prius absolutely the same sound!
@@bircan2254 2013
TM PH , it is the same think on the Prius ? Where it is located?
This is common on pretty much all Toyota products. My 06 Camry SE makes the same noise. it just the bushings going bad on the steering intermediate shaft. Some people has fixed the issue simply adding new grease instead of replacing the whole unit.
men... heaven to earth difference! Hands down! :)
I 've had the same issue with C-HR. Toyota dealer replaced intermediate steering column under guarantee, no cost. It is fixed.
Thank you Jeff, this video helped alot. In my case, the screw that was slightly loose, causing the knocking, was located towards the bottom behind the black plastic piece. It's right before the next universal joint. It's also a 12mm bolt.
Glad I could help!
You removed one bolt to take off the black boot/cover and then tightened the bolt underneath?
same issue solved in gen 3 toyota prius. Took 10 minutes only. Quarter turn then the steering bar in the joint stopped moving. No more knocking.
I think I love you man!!
Same thing with my Prius 2013, bout to try this.
How did it go?
Been chasing this sound on my 2016 Infiniti Q50, replaced all wheel hubs, inner and outer tire rods, new brakes and rotors and new tires. Still making this exact noise, I’m about to buy the lower joint for the steering column and see if it stops. Symptoms while driving are pulling to the right and over steering while turning
You need to check the rack and pinion. That was the cause.
Those upper bolts are usually one time only bolts can't reuse them I've had one snap on me when turning the car round once, the bolt head flew off it I guess there a kind of stretch bolt etc the bolt, the only bolt you can use again is the one that connects the column to the rack
You are the f#@king man! I owe you a beer if you're ever in LA!
Apparently this is a common issue. Someone on the assembly didn't tighten it enough
I have a Prius 3 2011. I tightened that screw, it didn't change the situation at all, the noise didn't go away
Sorry it didn’t work for you hope you can find the cause.
Apostol Marius did you ever find out what the issue was?
About the update. You changed steering rack, no intermediate shaft; so it was a diferent problem I asume
Hi, Just have the same problem , lexus CT from 2011, Toyota France say 900€ to repair ... i go to Toyota Germany and solve the problème for 0€ !
Can you add a tag with the French name : croisillon de direction
So french people how look on Google to search informations can go here
Thanks
Thank you brother , sorted 👍
Jeff, thank you! I just loose and retightened the bolt and the noise was gone.
Question, was the noise a symptom of another more serious underlying condition?
I don’t’ know but it seems like the bolt just get worn and allows for the free play. Actually replacing the bolt would most likely be a longer lasting solution.
@@coop802 thank you again
You don't know how bearings work, you need to change the shaft universal joint. by over-tightening the bolt you are putting pressure on the bearing which gets rid of the noise. but you risk the shaft shattering and you will loose steering. question is is it worth it? I'd not risk it. £130 brand new from Toyota. I bought a new one and fitted it.
the shaft never "shattered" all the way up until this year when the sound re-occurred. turned out to be the steering rack. New rack, drives like a go cart now. I agree however, it was a bandaid to stop a symptom. Glad you found what worked for you though.
hey, do you know the model number of the part?
I have same knock exactly.. I will try bolt and update yall how it went thanks for the tip!
What's the update?
Update?
Thanks Jeff I just save £xxx Great Job!!!
My 2012 Toyota camry had that joint bad..intermediate steering shaft. Had to change. Now perfect. The bolt really should not be the problem ....its tv he joint in shaft...or in the electric steering unit( damper- small piece to replace...or just grease)
Thanks from Russia🥳
Thanks! I fix my stewring wheel on Hyundai i30 by this way.
Any idea how to get a broken bolt out???...was trying to tighten and did too much
That is going to be difficult for sure. I don't think there is enough room to get a drill up there to try and extract the bolt. You may have to remove the steering shafts. I haven't done that one. Good luck!
I have exactly the same noise from my Toyota Avensis 2010. Mine rattles like crazy going over small bumps. Gonna try it
thanks man!
Part number has been replaced with a new part no (90080-11555)
is it possible that in Italy the screw code is different then 90080-11555?
Thanks! Got it off Amazon for like $6
Thank you Jeff, thank you for a great video, I found the part it sells at Toyota for $1.50, I want to ask you a favor, Can you please show how you got to the location (what parts did you have to take off and how you did that)
Nothing to take off, just lay on floorboard and follow the steering shaft up to the u joint. In my case I simply tightened the bolt a bit and didn't have to replace it. Make sure the wheels are turned straight or you may have to turn them a bit to get the correct position to adjust or remove the bolt.
I wonder if this is the same thing on the 2010 rx too
Please help me out Iam from India and own a Fiat Grande punto 1.3 but recently the car has started knocking + grinding noise when i do right turn. Please please please help me out
Should use locktite so it won't loosen again
I have the same knocking sound but its coming from the bottom of the shaft underneath the car. Idk what it is.
Tough to check that out as the car sits so low. Maybe next time you take it for an oil change you can ask to check it out most likely there in another bolt to another U joint in the steering system. Don't know what else to tell you on that one..
@@coop802 thanks
Take it out, clean and put new Grease
Same shit in toyota camry 2007,will try, thank you
Did this also cause a noise when going over bumps? I thought my suspension was shot when I picked my 2012 up. I checked and everything still looked like new. So I'm hoping this is it. I could feel something in the steering wheel when going over bumps.
Yes, check the first comment
It works 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
How did you take off the plastic cover to get to the area where you can get to the bolt?
How dangerous is this? If it’s not fixed - say if that bolt broke
If the bolt sheared when tightening I'm pretty sure you would loose your steering control, so be careful.
Whats the torque spec for this bolt? Wondering how much more can i turn?
Damper ,electric p/s 45254-28040 repeat it
I have same issue how tight should we try to make this bolt? All the way tight? Thx
Was this issue intermittent sometimes ?
Which type of the both u replaced Jeff ? Is it normal 12mm both ?
It's not a normal bolt at all, as it had splines near the head. I didn't replace it, just tightened it, but be careful not to OVER tighten it, don't want to break it off.
how to get to that bolt? any instruction?
Dang i gotta try this. The noise is so damn annoying
Hi Jeff is the noise disappear once you replace a new bolt or what else was the problem thanks
carlosgj1308 yes the noise stopped and still has not returned. I simply removed and re tightened it. Hope it helps!
Jeff Cooper it worked now no more noise thanks a lot for your help 👍🏼
Is this bolt easy to get to? Where exactly are you seeing this bolt? Thanks Jeff
Yes its easy to get to however you may not be able to see it. Look up from the drivers floorboard.
I may have the same issue with my 2011 Ct. Did you hear the noise while driving the car as well?
Yes! That's what prompted the investigation in the first place. Check it out and see its a very easy resolution even if you have to replace the bolt with the splines.Good luck!
Is your stering wheel level when driving ? Thanks
It was level, thats more of an alignment issue and not the knocking issue.
Didn't work for me the bolt was very tight couldn't tighten it anymore. Will try grease in the joint
can you get your phone up there and video the joint as it happens? You might be able to see where the slop is. Good luck!
Jeff Cooper

any improvements by greasing that joint ?
I tried this but that didn't seem loose anyone have any other suggestions?
