  • Is this the end of Unity? The recent pricing changes have resulted in swarms of Indie-game devs leaving the platform in favour of Unreal Engine and Godot. What do I think about all of this? Watch the video to find out!
This is a brief video so I have not gone into too much detail, please let me know if you would like to see a more in-depth video in the future!

I've started learning Godot, and I kinda enjoy it. I believe that the massive migration will help with faster development of that engine and will surpass Unity's abilities soon

Unity have slowed down with feature releases, don't prioritize very much needed features in order to stay competitive, cancel important projects and fire employees, when they insted should have done the oposite. All this started when they went public, and I can only see it getting worse. This pricing thingy was just the last (arguably huge) heap of straws that broak the camel's back.
I don't want to invest more time in Unity and get even more dependent on them. Every feature or tool that I develop for Unity only makes it harder to leave. It will never be easy, and it will only get harder, so now is the time.
I am currently transferring our studio's project to Unreal Engine. A lot of things have to be made over again, from scrach, but other incredible features we had to make ourselves for Unity are already made for us in Unreal, and incredibly well so on top of that.

I would never trust my future to Unity policy decisions. So I have my own game runtime as a result.

It's such a shame! I always loved Unity! Unreal looks to be the best bet though going forward

From what I've seen, Godot is a very close parallel with Unity. I adore Unreal Engine, though! It's not hard to learn and there are tons of tutorials and documentation to help orientate yourself, plus all of the things you mentioned in this video. I'd switch, personally, even if Unity do u-turn and roll back the decision. They've made it clear they can't be trusted

Yeah, I am considering Unreal as Godot does not feel as 3D capable. I love how easy it is to get beautiful graphics in Unreal though. Thanks for watching (would love it if you’d subscribe if not already).

I don't think Unreal is a very good answer to be honest, especially if you're a 2D game dev. I'd suggest looking at Godot, it's been on my radar for a while and I have some friends that have been really looking at it and trying out some smaller scale projects with it and are mostly happy (way before the Unity debacle). I think if you're not making uber-realistic 3D open world games, Godot may be a better option than Unreal Engine, especially if it gets more fleshed out as it's a FOSS project. Technically this same fiasco could happen with Unreal as well since it's controlled by Epic but Godot could just be forked and rebranded if any shenanigans ever happens from the core Godot team.

Unfortunately, Godot is way behind Unreal for realistic graphics and massive scenes, since the creator said it will never adopt data-oriented design or ECS for its gameplay scripting. Its Nintendo Switch porting cost is $3,000 and there is no tool to port a Godot game to Switch ourselves

Unreal is an engine primarily for making first person shooters. The further you go from an FPS, the less suitable Unreal becomes. It is, after all, just a beefed-up version of the level editor for the original Unreal, basically… And it's slow, cumbersome, requires a lot of systemresources. I probably wouldn't use Unreal unless I was working on something at least AA-worthy, something that took advantage of Unreal's power. Making some low-poly indie game with Unreal seems like a waste, and serious overkill. Even if it's a first person shooter…
On the other hand, noone should specialize in just one game engine. Lrearn the basics of game eninges in general, jump between them. It's like programming languages: Donät learn just one. Learn one, then learn more. If you want a stable career where you can just learn one tool/method and then use that for the rest of your life, then game dev is probably not for you.

Yep, I totally agree with you! Unreal Engine is far more complex when it comes to certain tasks. And yes, it is important to learn multiple engines. I've learned Unity and the basics of UE5. Hoping to look into Godot too

@@DanGameDev It's going to be pretty interesting to see what happens to Godot in the next few months/years. I remember when Blender was where Godot is now - a nice piece of software, but unpolished and still needing a lot of work. And look where it is today - a real contender in the modeling space.
And when it comes to low-end games, up to AA or so at least, I'd say Godot is probably the one that seems closest to Unity in terms of features and capabilities.
So yeah, I'm looking into it roght now as well, and will be keeping my eyes open.

Unreal Engine 5.1.1 often crashes on my RTX 3060 laptop. Epic Games is 40% owned by Tencent and it could increase soon
