- Finally! Thinnest G-Shock ever.
Well, it's tied for that position at least. The previous record holder was the G-056 and GW-056 series of watches at 11.0mm. Those were released in 2006 - 18 years before this new GD-B500.
This GD-B500 series of watches is tied for thinnest, also at 11.0mm - beating out the next thinnest watch currently available at 11.8mm - the GA-2100 line.
This specific model is the GD-B500S-8.
very 70's Sci-Fi colours
The buttons look easier to push than the small steel ones on the squares and previous small G's so that is a big usability improvement!
I want small g shocks
Check the Gm-s5600. The standard square G in 38mm
Smol pp
Noted
Is it solar powered?
buy baby G instead
For someone who already have the GBX-100, this watch would have been cool cause they removed most of the rubbish smart watch wanna be features of the GBX-100/GBD-200 but they also took out the amazing MIP display and still didn't add tough solar. Those are definitely a deal breaker for me.
maybe tough solar is reserved only on more expensive watches
@@GungKrisna12 I have a GW-M5610U, it's cheaper than this. It has tough solar and multiband 6.
@@GungKrisna12 It's actually only $10 or $20 cheaper in retail price than the GW6900 and GW-M5610 which both has Tough Solar and Multiband 6. You can actually get those 2 models at a much cheaper price in other official resellers in Japan. And for me, I definitely wouldn't mind if they increase the price of this model to add tough solar in it. I like the aesthetics of this watch and I would definitely get one of these if it only had tough solar. Especially if they also add the MIP display.
They added display size but kept the numbers small... Now there's too much empty space
Totally agree especially with the added mention that you cannot see the display indoors, it feels like a skip.
Yeah, what a missed chance to make a G-Shock with great visibility. I don't ask for much, just W-800h sized digits.
And space for bull bars. Bull bars save watches.
The display would drive me nuts, I want a positive or MIP display also no Bluetooth
Add a solar powered feature and I might consider it.
it is solar
@@mac11benzit's notn
I thought the same exact thing. Tough solar a must.
Or a ten year battery.
I really like the size. This color reminds me of medical instrument. So it feels natural to me that it has a step counter. 😅
Excellent release. Size is pretty perfect and it both feels nostalgic and modern at the same time. The translucid part close to the lugs looks nice. The mirror background is intriguing, but not a deal breaker for me. Cheers!
Just MY opinion. It looks pretty good, I specially like this color scheme. I like the smaller size, and it was about time they started addressing the insane thickness. I like buttons as they seem to be easier to spot and more importantly - to operate. I don't mind the lug width as you can cut most straps narrower where they attach, without it looking bad. Making the lugs thinner would've sacrificed their strength, and broken plastic lug is way harder to fix. Now the negatives. The screen is silly tiny. They tried to hide it by adding that dark grey frame with some text around it, but this is just to deceive buyers. All that text would fit on outer bezel. Having smaller screen decreases visibility. They also waste what little existing screen space they have by making numbers, letters and markings tiny, and leaving lot of unused space between them. They use 4 button design which means every time you push a button you risk also pushing the diagonally opposite button. 3 button design works way better in practice, and they could've made all the features work with 3 buttons. Or they could've put the 4th, narrow button (for light) on front, below screen, instead of that silly text there. Bluetooth is pointless, it's just a gimmick. Quartz watch can and should keep time well enough so you don't need to "sync" it. Actually it's an anti-feature, to allow them to sell cheaper quartz movements, that can't keep time, as you're going to "sync" it yourself anyway.. Instead of Bluetooth this watch screams for Solar. What's the point of having a rugged watch, seemingly made for explorers, travelers, adventurers, that will run out of battery while you're hiking in Patagonia, snorkeling in Thailand, or military training in a forest camp? In conclusion - this watch is for Casio watch fans/collectors, for casual users who like to see themselves as outdoorsy but really are not that much, for those who want something bit more rugged to wear for a jog or a walk after a day in the office. This watch is made for sales, not to for use.
I have the G-056 and I'm definitely getting this one as well!
Not sure I like the overall design, but I really like the display.
Great video. Just what I was looking for.
I'm not that into the design on this one personally, but you sir are very good at making videos about watches and I'm glad the algorithm finally woke up and put you back into my feed 🙏
I appreciate that!
I couldn't find this color combination online, looks amazing
The gd-350 is a great example of size giving you features. Sort of a larger cousin to the square. I love my squares, but the vibrating alarm on the gd-350 is worth its weight in gold (to me). Plus, you get (almost) all the features of the 5610u including world time. And buttons that make the user interface a joy to use. You lose solar and multiband, but gain a vibrating alarm. My lifestyle is such, that now I can't be without one.
The correct replacement for radio control is GPS.
Everybody can receive GPS everywhere, and it needs no phone or app.
I do agree with that, we just need costs to continue to drop. The other benefit of gps is of course being able to switch your time zone as you move.
the design
reminds me a bit of the old star wars movies..
btw. maybe i missed in the vid,
but its a non solar powered module.
Yeah not solar, standard battery.
Something that the rebel alliance would have as the standard issue.
Ordered mine. After seeing this I think I'm going to try sanding the lug connection to fit a 18/20mm strap.
It feels like half of the weight, of the 5610u. Wild
Thanks for covering this! Just a bit pendatic, but prior to this one, I think the thinnest current release is the GST-B600 at 11.3mm (which if I'm not mistaken is the smallest G-Shock currently available at 42mm) and not the GA-2100 line that's 11.8mm. There's also a new upcoming GA-2300 that's around 11.6mm and all of these new 'releases' seem to imply that Casio might be focusing on thinning out most of their upcoming releases.
Ah nice there are other thin options. Hoping too we continue to see more 'normal' sized GShocks.
My understanding is you can set it to have the backlight come on when when you twist your wrist. I have that on a solar G-Shock and it is great.
I gotta get this watch. I only rock squares! For the collection, this is no brainer!
Would you get black or white?
@@gthisiseasy The green one but if I had to choose between black or white, I'd go white it's more of a "sportsy(lol)" color to me. Don't laugh at the new word I added to the dictionary.
Fantastic review. The picture online of this G looked like a starburst similar to the anniversary G from 2023. Now that I see it's mirror, not as cool as it looked. But I still want it. 😁
"I don't love it but I still want it" is a feeling that I'm very familiar with, unfortunately.
it looks retro
i rolled my eyes when these models were announced, but this colourway is really nice.
It looks very BB8ish
I'm glad casio is making smaller gshoks. I have a baby g and i love it but I'd like to see more variety of color and functionality.
I think the name Baby G puts a lot of people off, certainly most of the girls that I know.
BGD-5000(U) is available in many colors and has almost the same features as a GW-M5610.
Great video and cool G-Shock! Thanks for uploading. What bracelet do you have on your Hamilton Khaki Field? 🙏🏻
That's the OEM bracelet that comes with the Auto. Some people don't like the center line that splits the mid link, but I love it.
@@lookatwristThanks! I think it looks great. Been looking for a good bracelet for my Khaki Field 👍🏻👍🏻
I quite like the design and its thickness. The downside for me is you still need adaptors if you want to change a strap on any G-Shock watch to 18mm or 20mm straps. Having no solar power also is a no from me personally. Blue tooth is also a no because I prefer Multiband 6 which I already have on my 5610's in my collection and has served me well since I purchased them. Just imo though as I do like the size of this particular watch.
Does it have Auto EL where the backlight will light up when the wrist moves into position? Thanks for the review!
It does actually. That's always been a feature that didn't work for me. On this watch it was going off a bit too easily, as the step counter means I did a lot of walking with it.
The square shape somehow doesnt do it for me...
Watch looks great
I wish they would just re release the GW-056! that was my favourite G-Shock and the best looking imo, Def not for everyone but it's so sleek
Just buy one in Japan.
Second new Casio having this weird (size and type) lugs, not sure how it's gonna go, doubt well...
It is the smallest. It's not tied in with a G-056, that one is both thicker and wider. It's pretty close with the MTG-700, which is actually the smallest non Baby-G until now, but it's still a bit smaller.
If the black and white one is the "Stormtrooper", this grey and orange version is clearly the Rebel Alliance.
Unfortunately this model does not seem to be for sale here at all, doesn't even show up on the local Casio site...
Your grey/orange version seems to be even more elusive, even the Casio Japan Website only shows the all black, the stormtrooper and the green one.
Perhaps usa only then. It's on the site, just out of stock.
Which GA-2100 is featured at 1:57? I don't think I've seen a CasiOak with an orange G-Shock logo & tan/grey markers.
It's most likely the GA-2100SU with the camo bezel replaced for a standard black one, but I'm curious about the owner's response too!
Yes, that's exactly it. I wanted a more 'standard' ga-2100. The camo bezel model has a really clean dial, the bezel isn't done very well imo. So swapped with the one from the original black/white model. I think the result is simple ond clean.
Can it notify if you are away from your phone, like you left your phone behind?
can this watch show 2 different time zones on the same screen? the gbd200 can
that color looks beautifull. too bad they don't sell that color in my country damn
It looks good, but can it fit bullbars? I bang my G's around and this one looks like one I'd like to keed in good shape for a good time. Plus it'd give it a rugged look.
They gave it a big screen but missed the chance to make a G-Shock with good visibility by giving it digits of the usual G-Shock dimensions.
The GM-S5600SK-7 and GM-S5600SB-1 are each 10.9 mm thick. They are smaller overall than the GD-B500S-xx series.
Interesting, I did mention Baby G watches but I was under the impression these new watches were the thinnest ever. They must be just the thinnest men's G-Shock.
How could you open App Info Mode on the watch screen? And also Is this watch show all the app notification?
Sorry, I sold this watch before I became an expert. Casio probably has a manual you can download.
is there any strap change video on this gd-b500?
I haven't seen one. But I removed the 16mm strap with a spring bar tool.
The design is closely similar to the Casio W800H.
I can't understand why in a simple watch the font of the numerals is slanted ...it very much does not fit the shape of the watch
No solar, no deal. Too bad! Next time they’ll get it right.
In my experience, the normal version comes out first. If it's reasonably successful, the solar comes next. But I imagine it's a costlier development, and they only do it on devices that seem like there's an audience.
Mirror chrome negative LCD
I hope they restock these. 🤨
This color combo is slightly more expensive than the white or all-black one. Any idea why?
You're right, seems the two with the translucent end pieces cost $130, and the simpler black and white models cost $120. My guess is they just use more types of plastic that cost more, and they may be more desirable. The two more expensive models are actually GD-B500S models. No idea what the 'S' means.
RIP Display. I think it was failed when digital watches has mirror finished display
oh man really?!! I gotta get another g-shock?! I have enough
love the look of this one. Like a G-Shock version of my beloved W96H with a bunch of extras
edit: that colorway is also cool af.
Yes I forgot to say just that in the video, it looks like a Gshock version of the W800. Clean and simple layout.
@@lookatwrist
Yes! those slimmer Casios have a lot of fans. I'm sure this one will be a hit. as you said price is on point too!
The really big timepieces are pathetic. I call it yokel's choice, unless you have really huge wrist then max 43mm or using as a tool watch the all sizes acceptable then. I love my modified countdown timer w-800h despite having 5 more expensive watches this stays on my wrist 5 days a week.
Thanks for this nice review 👍🏻
Does it have a vibration alarm?
I don't believe so. At least, I didn't use it.
I love the design but the mirror effect sould be annoying
If I might ask, could you perhaps measure the watch’s lug to lug?
Sorry, I sold this one. Probably too soon bc it's hard to find in this color for some reason!
G - Shockto Finissimo
Where can I get that exact model?
Casio.com where I got it. Out of stock now though.
What do you think of the new baby g watches.
I have no experience with Baby-G, for the most part. The original Gshock Junior, I had that as a child. I believe that led to the Baby G.
Does it have Auto light?
Yup, but in my experience, that never works well. I always turn it off. But your mileage may vary.
Could you please tell me the model
GD-B500S-8
is that using solar or battery?
It's not a solar watch, it's a plain battery driven quartz model.
Can this be set to DD/MM format?
Not that I can see. There may be some oddball button combo but I dont see the option in settings. I didn't see in the app either. All Casios should have that feature.
Thank you, I agree - I'm not buying any new models that don't support it, seems like a very basic thing for a watch to support.
Why not MIP, Casio? Why?
$, probably. This one is as low as $120. The GBX-100 and GBD-200 are $160 and $150. All these are MSRP numbers. I'm sure the prices will come down over time, and we'll see simple MIP watches without Bluetooth.
What is the lug to lug on it ?
I think it was 16mm, not really made for changing.
@@lookatwrist not lug width , lug to lug :)
@@khole15Oh right sorry. I see online as 46.3mm. I've since sold mine and can't measure.
@@chozar ah i see, thanks :)
that mirror finish sucks..!! i wonder why casio makes such displays, mirror finish, negative dispaly, clear display...!! it is against the whole function of a g-shock wrist watch..!!! zero legibility..zero legibility..!! 🤣🤣
Yes. More expensive negative display ones (metal or carbon versions) normally have STN technology with better visibility. Why not in all watches? I’d prefer paying slightly more for better visibility if I want or agree with a black display. So just another example of that…
I dig it, but it looks like a Nintendo watch.
흐음.. 만보기 기능이 있군요.
Looks like a Baby-G to me
Looks like the watch has a unisex design..
A pic of the other colors would be nice instead of only hearing u say it’s green
Just google it takes you 2 seconds.
Solar?
No, maybe the next version.
No tough solar...that's a nope for me.
My Casio G-shock King GXW-56-1BJF GX could be bigger
Most of so called "civilised world" has access to these LW radio towers.
My best estimate is perhaps half of the world is in range. My guess is Casio wants to make something that everyone has access to.
Gms2100 is smaller
Casio says it's the same thickness.
Gundam style
I don’t mind thin/flat g-shock if it’s as robust as its chonky brethren. But SMALL g-shocks? No thank you. Ppl who want small should buy baby-g. There is already a product for that market.
"finally!" what exactly? who said we were "expenting" a thinner g-shock? i guess no one ever asked that question
The great thing about Casio selling new models is they don't discontinued the old ones. You can still buy the hockey pucks. But they do keep making thin GShocks, it's gotta be for some reason. I'm guessing they sell really well.
I'm getting pretty tired of these Casio watches coming out of Japan... They haven't innovated their chipset in 30 years and are just slapping new skins on them since the year 2000... At this point, with 5nm chipsets and GPS sensors and eInk displays etc etc etc, they could have already produced an absolutely killer watch that isn't just a copy of some shit they made in 1988... Like, when am I going to get a triple sensor (Compass, Temp and Altitude) G-Shock that is rechargeable and looks like it was designed in the past 10 years?
I'd really like to see a smaller ProTrek. Those watches can look quite modern, and have the features you mention. But they too are quite large.
@@lookatwrist The Casio watches with digital compasses are based on the shittiest magnetometers Casio could get their hands on - they're WILDLY inaccurate. They're not even at the level of quality of the compass sensors found in a $50 Android burner phone from the gas station. I've become VERY underwhelmed by Japanese tech in the last 15 years... They're much like the Germans - They got compliments for SO long that they started slacking off and letting their foot off the gas two decades ago, and now you've got a situation where cheap Chinese shit from AliExpress is outperforming Japanese-made (or designed) tech from the past decade.
I think they exist and are called Garmin Instinct… 😁 No, but for sure, more modernity in these would be refreshing.
No MIP.
It's hard downgrade... Can't get over this
Display is weak. And bluetooth.. why?
I just dont think "thin" is what i want from g shock. I think g shock i think big, loud, rugged, thats what i want from g shock. If you want thin buy casio a168
Looks like it was designed for a child
G-Shock has lost the plot. Hard pass. Let me know when they stop trying to make fashion watches, and they get back to making functional watches again.
They sell like 500 models, pretty sure there's something for everyone.
Yeah, I own a few dozen myself.
it looks more like a teenager watch. I don't like it.
It is absolutely ugly
i dont like the look
Some of these new G shocks are getting kind of ugly IMO
The average G shock looks like a clown shoe
Ugliest g shock ever seen
Trust me bro I'm drooling over this watch
useless crap 😂
I couldn't find this color combination online, looks amazing
