...if i could go back - to one moment in time - it would be here...Newport...August 3, 2008...just for this...Gillian and David...nothing finer - nothing sweeter - nothing more meaningful...amazing work yet to come, to be sure, but this - this - is the heart of goodness...
I've had the very real pleasure of seeing them several times. Mesmerizing. I swear David plays himself into corners he'll never escape from, and yet pulls it off every time. These people are the genuine article...
Ha dta' reply to this one as I'd noticed the same thing re:David's improvisations....impossible but beautiful the way things "worked out." But you know that when Gillian puts her head down and starts some serious strumming you're gonna hear some magic from these two! It just works out that way!
"People would flat-out ask me, 'Don't you have any happy love songs?' Well, as a matter of fact, I don't. I've got songs about orphans and morphine addicts.".......and that, folks, is one of many reasons why she's such a brilliant beautiful artist. Bravo!
I agree . Someone asked my father one time why do you write so many sad songs? , and he said because those are the songs people want to hear . Gillian knows her music , that is for sure . She is a pure talent .
I'd say that in her songs, Gillian taps into certain eternal verities concerning the human condition, such as when, for instance, Miss Ohio laments: "Yeah, I wanna do right/but not right now." I mean, what can I say, Ms. Welch knows her St. Augustine.
In a time with nickel creek, I’m with her and Lori McKenna, Allison krauss, Sarah Jarosz and Mandolin Orange. So many great musicians to listen to if you know where to look. Ty you god
Amazing what beautiful God Given talent and a top notch musical education can produce! I don't know how anyone could not appreciate their music. I ' d say their music represents the soul of America. 2 thumbs up , kudos ,well done!
I just discovered both of these wonderful musicians yesterday. Before yesterday I never heard of either of them, and I love folk music and country and bluegrass music of all kinds. I am in love with them both. Huge talents. What an absolute joy it is to discover all their music now.
Gotta love artists who voice the soul in an art form that's often and easily treated superficially. These two honor the hallowed in the hollers! Someone, or something, told me she's related to Faulkner, through Mark Twain and his cuzin Lead Belly...?
Top of the food chain, the real thing right here. They take my breath away. They are always real, and just so, so good. (I get to see them in San Diego in October!!!)
Rawling's is a seriously underrated and unappreciated one if a kind musician. He is an equal to Gillian. I heard these two when I heard the beginning of " Orphan Girl " in a remote boutique in Door County, Wisconsin. One line and I was hooked, since summer 1996. Still hooked. I love these two so much. So unique. Soooo fabulous. Yes, this is national treasure. Blessings to Gillian and Dave. This stuff is healing physically and mentally. How does one thank them? Words aren't enuf. XO

49:20 is "Orphan Girl". Amazing that she can write like a long-time pro; not Dylan, but not bad at that writing stuff. She takes you down into herself when you hear her sing. Warm old soul.
"THE GHOSTLY ONES How Gillian Welch and David Rawlings rediscovered country music." A 2004 piece in The New Yorker. So about four years before this performance.
I wish just once someone would have the good sense to place the ads between the songs and not destroy a brilliant performance by interrupting it mid-song.
Those time codes are pretty far off... john dennis I have heard they were a couple in collage where they met, but never married and are now no longer a couple and haven't been for a long time.
I shudder to think what he could do on a guitar with a cutout. I once made a cutout in a cheap guitar when I was learning. I seem to recall Leo Kotke doing that with a '70's era Yamaha before cutout models were easily available. There were many copies of early Gibson arch top guitars. In the '70s you could buy some used Gibson arch tops for a few hundred bucks. They hail from the jazz combo and big band era before Les Paul got everybody wired.
Anybody know what kind of guitar Rawlings plays here? I used to have a 1940 Martin R-18 that was *very* similar, but this headstock doesn't look "Martin-ish" to me. A Gibson? Anybody know?
Does anyone know the make of David's guitar ?...I've been bouncing all over my chair for a few tunes trying to figure it out....lol.....Somebody pls help me out....would be greatly appreciated...I will even thank you in advance !! Thank you !!!
frank gavin It's the unreleased "Gamblin' Man". The lyrics are much the same as The Band's "If I Lose" , especially the chorus. It was on their Big Pink album. Gillian and Dave cover The Band often, one of my favorites is Long Black Veil...I thought Rick Danko owned the song until I saw G&D do it live, they really were awesome, so now the song is co-owned!
Haven't heard there version of Long Black Veil. I love when they do any cover. I think my favorite is when they do "girls just wanna have fun." There was a really good version on youtube but I haven't been able to find it recently.
I just don't understand the Newport crowds. Is there a policy against clapping for the bands? Can you not whoop and hoot when you hear the first notes from that song that you absolutely love!? Did I miss something? I mean, no, I don't have the money for Newport, but the sets are on average really great, and there's usually just a little smattering of applause at the end of a song. Simpletons...Gil's like, "can you hear us OK?" As in - we're up here rockin' it and you're all on your phones or too afraid to not be "cool."
Donald Austin Oh adendum: This is the same place that Dylan was boo'd for having the sac to bring an electric guitar on stage. Haha! Geesh...Sim-ple-tons...
+Donald Austin - from the sound of it the recording is directly from the desk, which is why you wouldn't hear much crowd noise. But I can sure hear it between songs anyway.
I can hear the audience! Some of us also think that "whoopin' and hootin'" when you hear the opening chords is a repulsive habit that spoils many a concert! Anyway, how can you criticise the crowd at a venue you have never visited!?
Donald Austin I saw Gillian Welsh a few years ago . When she picked up the banjo i was the only one that cheered . She heard me and said " Some people get silly about the banjo "
Quick Silver Girl was used in The Strangers, a horror movie. I haven't seen it but I probably would not appreciate it much since I don't like slasher movies, or gratuitous violence and bloodshed.
Dave is not only a fantastic guitarist, he's an amazing harmony singer whose voice blends perfectly with Gillian's.
...if i could go back - to one moment in time - it would be here...Newport...August 3, 2008...just for this...Gillian and David...nothing finer - nothing sweeter - nothing more meaningful...amazing work yet to come, to be sure, but this - this - is the heart of goodness...

Truer words were never spoken.
Yes I’ve been fortunate to have experienced them live several times and can agree 110%.
Ha dta' reply to this one as I'd noticed the same thing re:David's improvisations....impossible but beautiful the way things "worked out." But you know that when Gillian puts her head down and starts some serious strumming you're gonna hear some magic from these two! It just works out that way!
Whoa a different version of Lawman than the new 2024 Woodland album version. Very cool!
So thankful for the people who take time to record and post epic performances like this one. What a joy.
"People would flat-out ask me, 'Don't you have any happy love songs?' Well, as a matter of fact, I don't. I've got songs about orphans and morphine addicts.".......and that, folks, is one of many reasons why she's such a brilliant beautiful artist. Bravo!
+Samuel Sara As Emmylou Harris once said, "what good are happy songs?"
Augustine.
They asked Townes the same question. Look up his response.
One of my all time favorite ❤ artist...just love her style of music 🎶 great melodies, lyrics, and harmonies.
Beautiful. I really wish they had a camera on Rawlings' finger work. He's incredible.
so glad I live in a time where this stuff can be recorded for the place we can not always be. such beauty!!!
Me too.
Top Shelf Musicianship...Real Talent, Heart n Soul....my deserted island duo ❤❤ blues4life.
I always prefer the bottom shelf
83 years and that guitar was clearly made to sing along with Gillian. Dave Rawlings don't let that sweet lady go.
Dave Rawlings is definitely one of the best, if not the overall best folk music guitarist currently living
Absolutely agree with you. One of my favorite guitar players period.
I fawken love you Guys. Sorry for the language.
worthy of the celestial gods and all of creation. i give up.....words cannot explain
There are times he farily attacks that old Epiphone. Love it.
Gillian is national treasure.
Gillian Welch: soul of a poor red clay Georgia woman born inside a middle class pro musician's kid from LA.
Only in America!
Masterpiece performance ❤
My God Gillian is beautiful!
You guys have the greatest chemistry since Simon and Garfunkle. The individual talents are so outstanding, yet mesh as one.
simon and garfunkel had good songs this is ok but not quite that good
I think ypu meant since Rod & Ronnie, but no biggee!
@@jamiewesson898 judgemental much? And Garfunkel couldnt play guitar.
@@jerryshunk7152 I think she meant Jim & Jesse.
Greatest chemistry since Adam and Eve.
Gillian it awesome. Thank you for keeping real, music alive.
In a time with nickel creek, I’m with her and Lori McKenna, Allison krauss, Sarah Jarosz and Mandolin Orange. So many great musicians to listen to if you know where to look. Ty you god
Major kudos for posting this gem. The authenticity is palpable. "It don't get no more real than this folks."

it's 21:55 for The Way it WIll Be. For those without the patience to listen to the entire, wonderful whole.
Holy cow, how did they come up with this lyric: 42:03 Incomparable song writers of our age.
So beautiful,I think I will sit here with Jameson and cry this beautiful Sunday.Thank you Gillian and Dave and Jameson. My ❤ hurts.
So I'm not the only one?
But it’s such a beautiful happy cry
My god these two are so talented.
Un 9 th
"I want to right but not right now" genius lyric only buffered by the musicianship of Gillian Welch et al.
I almost forgot how good they are. Ty internet
Thanks so much for sharing this treasure . David and Gillian are today's Gram and Emmy . Perfection
I hope they are happy. They deserve it.
Dave's playing is mesmerizing.

How am I just finding out about these guys? Amazing!
just love that "voice" "strong" loud and "beautiful!
Great great lyrics snd performers. They are not locked in the box..
They are so free
T rump is gone and watching these two is a pleasure now.
In the 90s I only heard them on Prairie Home or a CD. Now I can watch them perform.
It's all great, but Rawlings really played some utterly tasty licks!
INDEED!

Great show nice touch on the finale with Jackson, you should see the Carolina Chocolate Drops version of Jackson.
Real shit...saw them live in Washington State around this same time. Memorable.
Their music is so pure and beautiful that it moves me to tears. It touches me deep down into my soul..
What a duo! Beautiful.
Songs I'd never heard! Thanks for posting this gem!
HELLO TO OLD FRIENDS . SO GOOD TO HEAR YOU AGAIN .
Super performance by Dave and Gillian. I loved the Jackson finale. 😀

Wow! Superb music and vocals :.
Super!! Great sound mix quality.
To the poster: "Lawman" starts at 8:00. "Sweet Tooth" starts at 43:58. Thank you.
if these two aren't the greatest thing since sliced bread ill eat my hat!!!
haha! I just ate mine, and everyone else's too!!
Top tier. Reminds me of Allison Krauss, of course, with a guitar.
They are amazing! Give me chills every time.
Tour one more time, and I'd come see them in Illinois. Take a plus one for Pat Finnerty, 😊too.
Blow me down... that woman can sing and the two play so well together ....Lawdy, ...Lawdy !
God she’s so pretty

wicked guitar - great music - the girl is excellent - why haven't I heard more from them?
any song with the lyrics "I wanna be a candy bar" is rockin me
love when Dave speaks
gorgeous we all hear you
Their incredible talent is mesmerizing!
I see people walking around randomly in the crowd. How could they not stand there transfixed?
49:20 is "Orphan Girl". Amazing that she can write like a long-time pro; not Dylan, but not bad at that writing stuff. She takes you down into herself when you hear her sing. Warm old soul.
Love it. Great.

"THE GHOSTLY ONES How Gillian Welch and David Rawlings rediscovered country music." A 2004 piece in The New Yorker. So about four years before this performance.
Anyone else get the E-harmonica Dylan reference that Rawlings chuckles at around 36 minute mark?
Che meraviglia...
What a banjo picker! People do love a chick with a banjo Gillian.
Dave's guitar is an 1935 Epiphone Olympic.
One of the cheapest Epiphone had in those years but he makes it sound like it's worth serious bucks.
little tiny thing serves its purpose, no? he does look like he's strangling it

my family--oh, the arrangements
ive loved her music for year, does any one know if there a couple?
john dennis I doubt it and hope not. You don't mix business with pleasure. That's been the end of many great combos.
frank gavin Yes they are actually a couple. But does and should that really matter? They make beautiful music together
It matters if they split up over a breakup. You don't dip your pen in company ink.
john dennis Yes they are married. Have been, for a long time.
john dennis
