First thing my dad did on every job site once there was some scrap -- built two saw horses and a small bench/stool for sitting on when he needed a rest. Literally every owner of a house he built asked if they could keep all three, lol. He always told them it belonged to them anyway.
I like that story, sound's like he was a cool guy !
@@rapidfire-0680 still is, just retired;)
Dude, what an awesome man!
Love the short story.
I would like to see the little stool he made. Somehow how I think it was very simple but very useful.
My family still has the bench that a carpenter made onsite while building my Grandparent"s 3-Flat in Chicago back in 1930. It was rescued a few times over the years from relatives who wanted tho chuck it, now i own it. Best of all. it is still in great shape.
Adding 4 screws to each leg and a piece of plywood to both sides (or another 2x4) will make that incredibly strong
Yes, he knows that and it's called how to make a saw horse in 55 seconds 🙂🙂
@bizim eller I'm sure he knows that, but for ALL those people looking for diy stuff, I don't think they care if it takes 55 seconds. As long as it holds up. Did you see those legs flex when he put weight on it?? Take another 55 seconds and slap 4 screws in each leg and a few cross members it'll be twice the saw horse if you have an extra minute to waste 🤦
Absolutely 💯
@@kazper4137 I was thinking better not put to much weight on it especially if it's a smooth floor
And a saw hook… 😎
30 minutes later and I’m still looking for drill bits.
😂👌🥃
And 90 min later, just got back from HD with drill bits, a new impact driver, safety glasses, a lawnmower, and a leaf blower…… but forgot the studs 🤬
Damn man.
@@JAye365
Fucken-A, you been following me! 😠
I've literally done that too. 🤣
@@JAye365id the same and I did buy the studs and a pair of saw horses😂
I'm a 1st year apprentice working in concrete. I had my second class this week and we built 2 saw horses. We built them super specifically using a table saw, miter saw, sliding t bevel, templates for cutting, etc. Because I work in concrete a lot of these tools I have never used. We probably spent 6 hours making them.
I'm 99× sure your method of doing it will save me a minimum of 5 hours and 45 minutes and be every bit stable. They won't look as good, but I'm here to build, not to win any fashion contests.
The Union will always have you learn to build the “correct way” but on a real life job site, it’s impractical and you need to do things fast and at a good pace. Last thing you wanna do is piss off your foreman.
You don’t have access to a miter saw or a table saw on most job sites, but as a concrete carpenter you have lots of 2x4’s and your saw (handsaw or circular saw/skillsaw) so this is a great way to make 2 quick and easy sawhorse on the spot 🤙🤙🤙
Damn, I love videos like this -- minimal talking, maximal results.
John, great talking with you at WBC in the speaker lounge. Forgot to thank you…I made these sawhorses for a new project build and they are perfect. Made them extra wide for cutting 8’ strips from 4’x8’ plywood sheets. I also recessed the screws on top so I could cut right into the horses and have them support the cutoff.
Perfection! Hope to see you again next year if not sooner.
Thanks man that is super quick and easy.
I’ve been building them like that for years, except I had a brace across the legs and between the legs. I also do a mobile version at the same height so that when I’m moving oak beams around I can move them easily and then place them on the normal work courses for work.
Mobile version? With wheels?
Been making them mostly like that for years. I put a 15 degree angle on both ends of each leg and add a pc if plywood on each end. Very strong that way!
For those who don't understand basic math you need 2 full 8' 2x4s and 1 extra piece at 32". Though you should atleast run a span on the outside if the legs, you can see the spongy flex in the legs. Good quick saw horse
Yeah I noticed the flex too. Good solution
Thanks for doing the mathy part! I almost strained a brain cell doing the math in my head. Yes, I said it!
For those who feel they need to explain math. Focus more on the grammatical errors in response.
Put a brace on the legs, so the legs won’t split apart.
These were made for a 1 job show.
Funny I though the same, when he pushes down on them at the end you can see them splitting apart
That is a 45 second saw horse
Good idea making my 1st one i thot something was missing thk u
Cool. Thank you brother. Thank you very much.
My favourite part is at the end where it deflects half an inch from barely half his body weight.
i weigh 300 Lbs..... so 150 lbs for 1/2" of deflection.... your move Maehlice
@@John_Malecki - he's right. It's a POS "saw horse" that is hardly strong enough to support it's own weight.
Looks like 2 more lower screws on each leg would solve the deflection.
Actually it didn't deflect. Either the horse or floor are slightly out of level, so when John leaned on it the unit torqued ever so slightly to cover the gap. John absolutely knows how to level legs, but the point of this vid was a quick sawhorse. Mission definitely accomplished.
@@MrJKCampioneno sir it deflected
Man never said a 30 second sturdy saw horse.
How to make a thirty second saw horse in 2 steps
1) make 31 saw horses
2) make another
clever you are
BOOOOOOO
Great simple instructional video. Was able to build sturdy saw horse out of scrap lumber. Thanks for the video!
Best diy video I’ve seen to date
Right I built them today there great and this dude was right to the point
Strong, fast and good looking sawhorse I love it.!
If you put two more screws in the leg where it joins the bottom of the I. It will make it even stronger. Just a thought
I love the simple steps. Well done!
Cool! I wasn’t even looking for how to build a saw horse but now I’ll make a couple!!
Great job my man. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
plywood gussets leg to leg under the I-beam make these damn strong
Yeah, without gussets this is a garbage sawhorse and the legs will just split open
Agree; however, that’s the 60-second version
He pushed down and it looked like those legs were going to do the Bambi on ice.
😂
Bambi on ice - thats a good one!
It almost certainly won't support the weight of the second one during storage.
Fast and easy was the description. Want to beef it up? A couple of cross pieces.
@@timoakley277 - making a "functional" sawhorse is the first criteria. Pointless making one fast if it doesn't work properly.
when you cut the legs on an angle it makes them more stable. 1 to 12 or 2 to 12 works good.
Do you mean anywhere from 1 to 12 degree cut on the bottom of the legs or something else? I’m confused?
@@teewithey5879 I think he means so that the legs spread in all directions, that's how i was taught anyway.
1" run 12" rise 2" run 12" rise the horizontal and vertical cuts
So I think this should be the next "Challenge build" see who can build a better and more functional sawhorse.
I think they've done it before
Move those legs in 2-3 inches on each side and put plywood gussets that fit tight to the I beam those horses will hold the world.
Then legs fall of when something heavy is on saw horse cause those screws have no shear strength.
you done want to rest a car on them , but I have these myself, they last at least a couple years, but if you like use your 16 penny nail gun.
*off
Pretty much how I made my 2x6 horses for my camper. Used scrap plywood on either end for strength. Didn't cost much back in the day.
I like you man but when you pushed down on that it looked like the legs was gonna give way 🤣
I build the same style on the job site, they hold a lot of weight
🤣
I would hope so because an object that is so ridged with zero flex would actually break faster than one that allows a variance of movement between joints when you compare two builds from the same material. Unless it’s hardened steel. Then well…. It shouldn’t really flex at all lol but yes that’s normal.
I believe with this setup you can put about 200 pounds of downward force before it strips the nail depending on the wood used.
Fair enough I could be wrong buuuut it did look like the thing was going to do the splits. Vote for a video to see how much weight it holds 😂
Wow Man you did that so quickly, that you still have plenty of time to cut the angles, on the bottoms of the legs so that they sit flat on the floor, instead of up on the edges of the 2X4's, LOL !
Quick and slick, I'll try that thanks 👍
It's quick and to-the-point...but my sawhorses are built following the Next Level Carpentry video on this style of saw horse - he brought them to a lumber supply store and they loaded something like 8 TONS of lumber bundles onto the saw horses and they didn't deflect... yeah they took a bit longer to make but they're beautiful and will last... but when's the last time you needed your saw horses to support 16,000 pounds?
Exactly what I was looking for best video on this. Straight to the point please yes lol👍
Who would have thought a saw horse video would have created so much conversation and debate.
Def cool and quick way to build a pair. Great info and vid man!
Excellent idea for making fast inexpensive sawhorses.
Instructions actuallu super clear with the lettering. I think I will remember this one when I am 60
That's how I learned to do it when I first started framing. After a few houses a made a slight adjustment. After cutting the first three 2x4s I set the saw on a compound miter. 10⁰ and 15⁰ and cut the legs on both ends with these angles. This did a few things. First the legs nestled into the I beam better. This ended up making the saw horse more stable and last longer over heavy abuse on multiple jobs over years. Second the bottoms sat better on the subfloor (not a big deal). Finally because the legs are mow splayed in two directions because of the angle going both ways, the saw horses were a lot more stable. Difference in time to make is only the time it takes to change the saw setting. Of course we always made these in pairs. This became the new way our crew made saw horses.
Awesome and simple to do. Thanks for the idea.
Always such wonderful content thanks man
Love it !
No nonsense man! I think I am in love...
Thank you these are perfect!
You are the best and the north west and I don’t kill whoever says something are you still the best keyboard with more ideas good job
Perfect. I'll use this on the next one!
If I don't have money for a saw horse what makes you think I'd have a miter saw?
Hand saw...... scrap wood..... 👀
@@benmoffett5388 r/woosh
Thank you for this .
Eselente trabajo 👍👍
That was cool greatjob.
Exactly how I build rafter horses on every job site. Except I make them 8 foot long.
Except you got to nail the legs into the bottom I as well as the top
Awesome hack , save money 💵. Thanks
Hell yeah super easy. Thank you
Super cool! Thanks.
Yes sir
Very helpful
Thanks
Darn straight. Dude getting it done Sweet. Hold my Beer. Darn I'm 👍🏻
Thank you very much sir 🙏❤️
Thank you
I have saw horses everywhere, i cant get enough of them…..
Wow Amazing job!
Pretty good idea, thank you
Love it.
Outstanding
Thanks for the video man I'm going to make one now I'm in the weekend
Amazing!
Only $150 at your local hardware store!
Make sure the 2×4's aren't warped, or twisted, before you start !! Just made 2 of these !!
I SAW THAT‼️ and more weight and the sawhorse legs are doing the splits 😂
Michigan I worked with a Old timer he built them like that and leave them for the home owner when we built pole barns Gorge Romine he be in his 80s or 90s today .
Great info. Great idea.
Right on bro keep up the good job
I always do 10 degrees cut on the legs so is more stable 🤷♂️
EXCELLENT!
Built those type of saw horses 20 years ago wouldn’t have any other
yes indeed I made 2 of them
!!
You explain this so perfectly T then a I
My, that looks sturdy.
That looks good 👍
John, Almost perfect.... You need 2 more boards connecting the Legs Inside!!!! About 10 inches from the ground... Let me Know.....(.?)
Hey you should do a video on making a shell for dishwasher
Just sink the top screws so saw blade doesn't hit them.
You wanna use nails for sawhorses to keep from killing your blade if you hit them.
Real quick too
Cool!
Very cool. You have a new subscriber!
30 seconds to build. 30 minutes to fix them when the legs spread out from any weight and bend the screws
I would add two cross beams one that Gose from one leg to the other and do that for both sets of legs
I Love it
Awesome 👌
I prefer the 6 board method , the top of the I isn't necessary. If anything braces between the legs, are more useful.
I think he made this clip because he was pissed at his helper for not knowing how to make a saw horse.
I must have made 100s of those when I was a framing carpenter back in the 80s.
I want to see a part 2 where John stands on that saw horse.
👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸😀good tip
Just put of curiosity, what's it take to break it? Seems pretty sturdy, but I think the legs would spread and be the failure point.
held strong for years so far, i'll let you know when they break
@@John_Malecki, buddy, the legs spread on camera when you just lean on it, as so many others have pointed out. You do not even have the discrimination to notice that, or the self respect to edit it out if you did. And even for this crappy design, you did not bother to use the lower pair of screws.
@@leehaelters6182 - he couldn't care less. It clearly shows what kind of 'carpenter' he really is, and how proud he is of his work.
Legs almost split when he pushed down.
Gracias
That doesn't seem like it would hold that much weight. Maybe add a few more screws to make sure and call it a 35-second sawhorse
Excelente eres un jenio😮
Notice he didn't push down too hard.
Would've been like his Mrs last night 😂
