Great job Jim, very rewarding 👏 l was in the Cleaning business, houses, car parks, schools, commercial Cleaning, l loved it. Well done Jim 👏 Wonderful work.
One hour to do a service is fantastic, especially if you lubed the cables and all moving parts, checked the wheel, head and swing arm bearings, checked the brake pads and disks, checked the battery terminals, checked for tire damage and checked the pressures. PS, it’s best to drain the oil when it’s warm, set the plug gap correctly and torque the plugs. Just winding you up Freddie. As always, good content 😀
Agreed with this. Gently by hand so you don’t cross thread it and then by the torque setting or gently nip it if you don’t have it hand. Don’t ever over tighten it 😊

Safe, happy travels 👍 Personally, i am loving seeing a regular bike being used, and not just for the Sunday coffee run. Brilliant. Enjoy Scotland, you won't be disappointed ! Ride safe.
Hey Freddie. You might want to have the cylinder head spark plug threads inspected to see why that spark plug keeps popping out. Or...have the spark plug properly checked with a torque wrench to ensure it's installed properly. Spark plugs don't generally just pop out during normal use.
I've never heard of it either ... I note that it was a written-off and some point and wonder if it's related to it's previous history in some way? ... 🤔
Great bike cleanup.Wishing you the very best for your upcoming Scotland trip. This time please carry along the correct spark plug spanner! Lots of happy and safe riding.
Hi Freddie, I do hope you enjoy Scotland and the weather behaves for your trip. It’s beautiful here just now. Well done Jim, he did a fantastic job on the Bonnie, it looks amazing.
That's a man who loves cleaning bikes, what a difference and well worth it. I wish I had as much love cleaning them as I do riding, but sadly I don't. A good remoinder as well that I need to do an oil change on mine ready for whatever I decide to do this summer.
I tend to not do routine service myself - but I did put my Rocket on a hydraulic jack at one point, take off both wheels, strip the brake discs and go to town on them with an aluminium polish and polishing discs and stuff... also tore out the entire air system and replaced that with Ramair filters, etc. So I'm not incapable, and I suppose I could just as well do the rest of the routine stuff but for some reason I just prefer to offload that to the local shop. Ride in, have them do the work, deal with the oil disposal and stuff and just chill. Great guys, and can't hurt to get an extra pair of eyes on the bike once in a while just in case they spot something, and they need income to remain in business so why not. Also, I remain a tad mystified about your riding gear choices (like, no gloves - I'd rather ride without pants than without gloves) but then again I don't wanna be that naggy a-hole in every video, and I'm not your dad, so you do you. 😂
Loved your last vlog and followed you through to Africa ! Enjoy your trip to Scotland, being for the north of Scotland myself I must say don’t rule out the Cairngorms. Some of the best scenery and more importantly bike roads out there! It’s no wonder Clarkson and co used to film up there back in the day ! Looking forward to your next trip !
Recently got back from a NC500 trip which included some island hopping. The roads on the West Coast are fantastic with very little traffic. Looking forward to watching your vlog of the trip...
You're likely going to love Scotland. You'll probably need some midge protection this time of year! I just looked into the Highland Scramble, they want £1700 for six days, that's a lot. I've been fortunate enough to ride around Scotland for a few weeks over the past two years. It's breathtaking in areas.
Always love your videos you two. Your “1 hour service” made me laugh to myself having made the same promise to my wife when servicing my bike before we had to go out recently. After the frightening realisation that the oil filter had been put on by a large ape, meaning after all tools had been exhausted, I had to hammer a screwdriver through it several times to work it out! Note to self - keep time predictions to one’s salt in future and add 100% too! 😂😂👍👍
About 10 years ago I had my then 10 year old Honda Hornet 600 detailed and some new Iridium plugs put in. They cost nearly 50 pounds for four of them, but what a difference. The bike ran a lot cleaner and started everytime, no matter how hot or cold the temperature got. Great volg as usual Fred, can't wait for the Scotch trip...........
Freddie’s videos with his Bonneville are better promotionals for buying a Triumph than all those other guys test riding the newest 2023s. This bike is legendary!
Brilliant content Freddie, really enjoyed following your trip day by day through Morocco which builds a lot of excitement for this Scotland tour. Thanks for sharing with us and cheers from the states.
I think having the tank polished up would really make it look new again. It comes across as faded and dull due to aging. Having the black gloss would look beautiful
If you and Jim wanted to put together a more in-depth video sometime, that maybe went into some instruction and explanation of process, tools and chemicals, I'd be very interested in that. I know it's not precisely the standard type of video you put out, but it would be useful. I have worked as a car detailer, and I can keep my bikes in reasonably nice shape all the time, but I'd love to see what a real pro with motorcycle-specific experience has to say about how to go at it. The Bonnie looks fantastic. I really love your bike. The 865 Triumphs were the first bikes I really fell in love with, when I was getting into motorcycling, and I don't know why I never got one. I love my Z900RS, but I still wish I had a Bonneville a lot like yours.
How can you tell someone is actually good at detailing a motorcycle specifically? They don't go insane with a high pressure washer and shove it into every nook and cranny.... awesome job, Jim the detailer! Watching that snow foam go on mostly from above and with moderate pressure was nice, and actually going in with a small brush - chef's kiss. If I were in the country and needed a detail, I'd be happy to trust him with my pride and joy. Motorcycles aren't fully water tight, especially for water coming in with massive pressure and sideways. I've seen a very highly regarded detailer just shove the nozzle of his professional grade high pressure washer into the bike in multiple locations and letting er rip, which is just not great, in my opinion. You can force water into threads and promote rusting, into gaps, even potentially into the tire if you hit the rims with high pressure in just the wrong angle, I'd say. Great work here.
A great vlog showing how easy it is to service a bike. I hope you don’t mind me asking what rucksack were you using when you went to pick up your service parts? Really looking forward to your next trip. Credit to Jim he’s made a lovely job of your bike. Cheers
Well done for having a go at servicing, you said that you didn't need a manual so I take it that you know the correct torque figures for the sump plug and spark plugs and didn't just crank them up very tight? spark plug gap too? Well done for putting oil in the oil filter before you filled the sump, why didn't you put a piece of wood under the side stand and make the bike level for the oil fill? Cleaning was brilliant, you can tell he's really enthusiastic about it, how much was it please?
Hi Freddie , to fix the exaust just drill 2 tiny holes on each side 4 mm and put popnrivets in ( i hope thats the correct word ) this will stay , and you can always drill them back out if you want more noise 😊
I can tell just one thing you don't want to do if the spark plug pops off and still attached to the lead...Don't grab it! I did that one time and got enough of electric shock to raise my butt off the seat.😄😄
Hi Freddie. I really enjoyed your Morrocan trip . Thats a motorbike journey I would like to do also although I would be travelling from where I live in Sicily. Being Scottish, I have done Sicily / Scotland motorbike journeys many times so I am really looking forward to your trip. Scotland is one of the best places in Europe to travel by motorbike. 😊
Freddie, as someone else, has said make sure your screwing in your spark plugs to the correct torque settings after watching a fair number of your videos you do seem to have plug problems, ride safe and keep up with the great videos 😊😊😊

Hmm, would you ever consider wrapping your exhaust baffles with fibreglass? That might help with the rattling. Also, I attempted this on my xs400 last week and found that the baffles were both being propped up by a simple nut and bolt (not properly screwed down)
How about buying the cheapest end-can you can find? About to put my old Buell back on the road. It's an XB12X. My word, what a clean Triumph you have, Freddie.
Hi Freddie ,it would be interesting to see how clean your exhaust header would clean up with Harpic power plus! Also if you stroked your engine cooling fins with some very fine maybe 200 grit wet and dry sand paper. Then spray some of your GT silicone spray on it!
Good idea Harpic - particularly the one in the black bottle. Autosol and an old pair of pants - F&F, Calvin Klein, whatevs - will also get the discolouration off the pipes pretty quickly!

Freddy, Can we talk about choke? On a bike your age (carbureted) the choke well chokes oxygen out of the combustion cycle. . .so you have a bunch of gas and less oxygen. Gas is a great degreaser. . .So when you change your oil, it is very important to get oil up to the top of the engine quickly. By using your choke, you do increase RPM (while oil is not up top yet) and you exacerbate the problem by using choke to increase that RPM. When you are starting an engine after an oil change, I recommended hitting the starter a few times (2, 3 seconds each) to just get your oil pump pulling fresh oil. I would then start the bike (without choke if you can but THROTTLE the bike to 1,000 rpm for 30 seconds or so. . .you should hear your top end quiet down. Don’t use your choke for this. . .it increases gas in the cylinders (as a ration to air, which “cleans the oil off the sleeves. . .I say this but you have a high mileage triumph and you haven’t damaged it yet, so totally voluntary . ..but I had an engineer for a father, and I watched you start your bike after an oil change using choke (NOOO) and then let it idle at like 250 rpm with no choke (NOOOO), only to increase the RPM with choke and not the throttle (NOOOOOO). Huge fan sorry to be a wet blanket.
Best air oil cooled retro made. I'm in Daytona, I help build these into monsters, one hit 152 mph at the AMCA twins battle on the track a couple years ago. These bikes are so stout when to take them apartyou see the fabulous engineering and quality Triumph put in them. We can get 90-110 bhp at thw ]e wheel depending on the clients specs. I've see at least two bike go well over 100.000 miles is stock trim. Ride safe.
Love watching you dude. Please put us all out of our misery and treat yourself to a new exhaust. They aren’t too expensive and it will transform the sound. Come in Freddie! ❤
Hi I really enjoy you take on biking, open to all views and sides which is refreshing. I have last year pasted my big bike test at middle age, I always mean to get it but with kids etc it just never seemed the right time to splash out on myself (it cost about £1000 all in). I don't have any friends who are bikers so I would really like to get out with some other bikers on a bit of a journey. My question is, how do you find out about events like the highland scramble etc and join in? Many thanks Simon
As you ay, looks like a "New Bike"! I used to ride Bikes a long time ago in Southern Africa for many years - in fact worked for Honda in South Africa back in the early 80's. My pride and joy at the time was a new 1981 Honda CB750FB in Red. I rode on that between Welkom in SA to Harare in Zimbabwe a few times on my own. about a 1400KM journey one way. Of course working for a Honda Dealership I rode many other bikes that were Demo's as a company bike. Namely, CX500 Custom; CX500 Turbo; CBX550F; GL1000; CBX1000 and a CB400 Hawk. I did own a few others over the years after leaving SA, a Yamaha 180 Twin (2S), CB900FB, Kawa H2 750 (2S) and lastly a Suzuki Katana 750 in 1991. Stopped riding after that. Luckily in all that time I only had one whoopsie, I braked, (it was on the CBX550) but the Cement mixer behind me wasn't so quick and ended up bouncing me down the road! Luckily no major damage to me or the bike, just a bit sore for a few days - mainly my left Hip....??? Happy an safe travels in Scotland! ps. Really enjoyed your Sahara Trip - quite extrodinary! Thanks!
There was a motorcycle under that layer of dirt to my surprise. I thought he travelled on a carpet of dirt. Long overdue clean. This bike is too beautiful and young to let it get that bad Freddie, dont do it again :D
Hi Freddie, Tks for the vids, lovely pro look. I’m a beginner vlogger - could you do a vid on “basic how you do your vids” please? A sort of essential tips for beginners? Thanks again.
Hello Freddie! Great video, as always... I really liked your green pants and shoes that you were wearing at the end. Do you mind sharing their names? Thank you!
I have never had a bike detailed by someone else - but I often do a “big” clean on my bikes myself - especially mid or after a big expedition. It gives me a chance to check everything while I service, maintain, clean, lube and check all the bolts and screws that need tightened. One cleaning story is that In Ethiopia by Lake Gonder I was happily cleaning my missus 990 by our tent and it fell on me and the foot peg scooped out a big chunk of my shin. After getting it off me - I had to pour iodine in the hole left in my leg, get it dressed - and then poke out a sizeable lump meat and blonde hair with a screw driver and then I wondered what to do with it and so I fed it to a feral dog that seems to enjoy it. I hope I didn’t give it a taste for human flesh. I still have a big dent in my shin from that bike cleaning day and it reminds me to make sure the surface is solid and use the centre stand.
I take it you checked the spark plug gap off camera? I think you will find the Buell lightning is already a classic partly due to the few numbers they sold. Can't see why some people are unable to clean there own bike? it's not hard and I find it quite therapeutic and take pride it what I own! and never used a carwash either😜😜
Hey Freddie, not related to this video, but I think you should get Dan your mate who went from a bobber to KTM on your podcast. You’re contrasting motorcycle journeys would be really interesting to listen to.
If you travel up the A1 or A68 Freddie (which from Ipswich to Edinburgh you likely will) be careful for speed cameras, both fixated and mobile. I'm sure you ride steady and safely, but it is always easy to get caught out...and forewarned is forearmed! (Also bring your security devices, motorbike crime is fairly bad in Edinburgh, you don't want the bike taken before you even begin 👍🏻)
Motorbike theft is very bad in Edinburgh, they do it in broad daylight in the city centre! I’ve seen the little b#$%$%# with my own eyes. Make sure your bike is safe if you come to Edinburgh. Are you leaving from Saltire? I go there quite a bit for food and to look at all the bikes. Have a great trip!

A 2010 Bonneville is EFI - that stands for Electronic Fuel Injection. But you knew that didn't you? :)
Get yourself a full front mud guard, or a large fender extender. When it rains in scotland you know about it..
Looks like new
Take in the ABR festival next year - you will be going up to Scotland during it this year.
Ride safe.
Bike looks phenomenal after that clean.
The Fiat deserves a little more rewarding love and attention Freddie. Wish there was a similar Jim around here, great job.
Love watching you dude.
Please put us all out of our misery and treat yourself to a new exhaust. They aren’t too expensive and it will transform the sound. Come in Freddie! ❤
... or wrap and wire some Accoustafil around the baffle. I can't believe you've lived with that rattle for so long.
Wrap some wire wool/Brilo pads around your baffle, to stop it rattling. Great video as per usual 👍👍
Thanks!
About time you cleaned that bike Freddie looks so much better now. Safe trip ✌😊
Thank you so much, John🙂
There was a motorcycle under that layer of dirt to my surprise. I thought he travelled on a carpet of dirt. Long overdue clean. This bike is too beautiful and young to let it get that bad Freddie, dont do it again :D
You must call into cogs cycles in Selby for the best coffee ever. Let me know what day you might be passing en route to Scotland
what about valves check and throttle bodies balance and fork oil and steering head bearing greased and brake fluid change
This was such a step forward from your wd40 spray and pray method you showed some time ago 😂
Hi Freddie, Tks for the vids, lovely pro look. I’m a beginner vlogger - could you do a vid on “basic how you do your vids” please? A sort of essential tips for beginners? Thanks again.
Your Bonneville got a well deserved bath 🛁😍👍🏻
OMG...15:28!! Now that's a dirty bike!!🤣
The exhaust baffle easy to fix all you need is two pliers and bend two bits out, so you push/force the baffle in
Rattle fixed
Just make the baffle "not round, hope this makes sense
This makes perfect sense- I’ll try this. Thank you so much🙌🏻🙌🏻
Just REMOVE the baffle!
Wow, bike looks great.
Love it Freddy great video. Found a place here it’s 40 rand 😂
top job Jim.
Thank you.
That original blue Gold Wing looks tidy at the bike shop!
I’m glad someone mentioned it- beautiful, hey!
@@FreddieDobbs especially when you think it’s around 45yrs old now! 👍
Hello Freddie! Great video, as always... I really liked your green pants and shoes that you were wearing at the end. Do you mind sharing their names? Thank you!
Common issue with the 500 is the wires snapping inside the rubber flexi to the boot, a very easy DIY fix!!!
Your bike looked spotless after a good wash. Definitely worth paying the professionals.
That sounded nasty 🤮🤮
NC500 was fantastic......you should give it a go
Loved watching Jim clean the Bonneville, it looks great. Had to mute the awful music, that was bad.
Hi Freddie! May I ask you what is the reference Of you passenger handle - package carrier please? Looks really nice!
How about changing the front fork oil. And the brake fluid, it's often overlooked.
Freddie can I just point out how well dressed you are? Absolute class!
Harpic power plus drain cleaner will bring that exhaust up a treat.
Thank you so much for these tips!
Fixed, not fixated 😂
Motorbike theft is very bad in Edinburgh, they do it in broad daylight in the city centre! I’ve seen the little b#$%$%# with my own eyes. Make sure your bike is safe if you come to Edinburgh. Are you leaving from Saltire? I go there quite a bit for food and to look at all the bikes. Have a great trip!
Curious..why choose the bike you have for touring. Surely a adventure bike of the same cc would be more comfy.
can't believe good it looks after that clean
