  • It's that time everyone, at least for my little beekeeping operation. Time to deal with those nasty varroa mites. Everyone has there ways and methods, whether treating or not treating at all, and in this trip to the bee yard in town, I will be doing my method for this season. I am excited for the great harvest and I like what I'm seeing in the bees. Let's go out into this yard and take a look and get these treatments on the hives.

    About time for me to treat as well. Not sure if you caught Greg’s talk at the NCSBA conference but he uses 35 gm and said he believes that is the sweet spot. Of course those of us using the foil packs find it hard to gauge that dose. Colonies looking good!

      I sure did John. I actually went to lunch with him after that talk and explained what I had done in this video (I shot this before I went to see y’all😁), and I told him I would go back with the 35. He kind of coached me thru some ways to play catch up, so I got busy and got the second treatments on when I got back. I so enjoyed his two presentations and visiting with him. Planning to visit him when I vacation to Asheville. Have a great weekend my friend!!

    Hey Mike! When I use Apiguard I put it in the box farthest from the door. I want them to carry it out using the longest distance possible. I also don’t use it past 88 degrees and I watch what the heat index is…just how it use it.
    As for the OA extended release, I use those absorbent pads and not those Swedish towels. The bees chew up the towels and get it out to fast. They don’t or can’t do anything to the pads and you want that OA to stay in the box as long as possible. That’s how I do it 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  2 місяці тому

      Wish I could experience 88 degrees when it’s time to treat😬😬. Listening to Greg Rodger’s recently, I’m encouraged with the results he saw with OAE and also with his success rate with Thymol at 35 three times in the heat.

    With you Mike - do what you're gonna do, I'll do what I'm gonna do and they can do what they're gonna do or not do. Been leaning towards using apiguard later this fall myself. Like Bob Bennie I'm doing maintenance treatments to keep the mite numbers down so they never get high. Management that results in healthy hives and overwintering success works for me. Yeah that humidity is like breathing water instead of air.

      Greg Rodger’s did a great lecture and he explained how three treatments a year, evenly spaced, was having a 90% efficacy. That’s rotating treatments as well.

    Is this "All you need to know about treatments" video ? 😎
    Mike, in my experience everyone with 3+ years of beekeeping under their belt.. with reasonable survival rates thinks "I'm a great beekeeper. I'm gonna teach you now". There's nothing to learn anymore.. l know how to"... Specially after they have a good honey year. They become the best.. and it's like that everywhere. I'm watching it all my life. It spreads and after it even when you try to help them they won't listen because now they know better..
    So there's no use in arguing. I usually write what I already tried and how it worked for me.. and if it helps someone good for them. There's way too many opinions without trying it , on YT.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  2 місяці тому +1

      Yes, 3 years is a significant time and I see that too. There is actually a name for the act and it’s called Dunning-Kruger Effect. Real deal. I try to just listen and interject, but with some I just stop and break away when I can😁😁

    • @researcherAmateur
      @researcherAmateur 2 місяці тому

      @@MikeBarryBees Haha, yeah it starts after three years. Many times I just want to help them. But all they want is listen how good they are with their video. It ends up with them being offended 😁 so l started to give up on that. I try to give options and they take it like opinions. The funny part is that they ask for it in the video 😅.
      Stay cool.. this heat waves l get are too much...

    Hi Mike . New NewBee here. can you suggest how we can deal with ants. They are always in our hives

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  2 місяці тому

      Oh wow, ants! Just hate them and I really have not found a good way to keep them out. I think migratory covers help if you’re having trouble with them on the inner covers of telescoping lids. Takes away that dead space that they can congregate in. Diatomaceous earth around the hives will work but has to be replaced after rain and also periodically. I’ve heard of cinnamon but I’ve not seen good results with that. But folks say it works for them, so that’s another option to try. Of course there are any poisons for around the hives, but that is risky and really I don’t like any synthetic poisons on the surface around my hives. Strong colonies can manage as long as the ants don’t get too populous, but sometimes they just need to be moved to another area if they can’t be controlled. Hope that helps you. Thanks for watching!!

    Treatment or treatment free? I use +32 windshield wash year-round in my truck. My brother uses 0F windshield wash in his truck. I'm in Texas. He's in Indiana. As you said, we each do what works for us where we are! Environment, genetics, goals, production, time... all significant factors in varroa impact.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  2 місяці тому +1

      Yep Tony, agree 100%! Type bees too. The bees you raise hold off mites better in studies due to swarming behavior and nest sizes being smaller. So many variables. Thanks for watching!!

    • @tonyandric4380
      @tonyandric4380 2 місяці тому +1

      @@MikeBarryBees I agree that swarming and smaller nests do affect varroa controls. While I can have swarming, "small nest sizes" is the opposite of what I see. 2+ boxes of brood is common. I attribute much of it to them just plain being 'MEAN'. I joke that they have 1 philosophy: if it is not one of their family & it comes in the front door, they have only 1 answer and that is to kill it. Mouse? Dead. Wasps, dead. SHB, dead. Moths, dead. Skunk at door, dead/driven away. Varroa, dead three times over. Only bad part of that approach is that they try the same thing with their loving beekeeper!

    Mr. Mike
    I am planning on using the Apiguard this year again just to try . I think it was three years ago I used it an got
    bad results BUT I
    Just thought I would try one more time. I do not know if I got a bad batch or if it was something I did or what ever I do not know. I will for sure do a follow up with OAV that I know it works but I already know it will take several treatments an that is all right with me. . I have seven supers left to pull an that will be all mine . I have been doing my inspection an checking queens as I finish pulling . I picked up another bee yard last Tuesday an planning on moving bees next week after inspection and treatments . I have five I plan on splitting this week an that will be part of the ones I move . Always really enjoy your time in your Bee yard or whatever’s going on. Thanks

    I Love how you always say... This is not a How To video. This is a How I Do video. I too use what I like to call my Faith from Buffy the Slayer method... 5x5. When asked how she's doing Faith says 5x5. 5 treatments 5 days apart. Then in November when it's Cooler... Formic Pro 1 strip for 10 days then repeat. Then again in early Spring.

      @MikeBarryBees  2 місяці тому +1

      Yep. That 5X5 works. I used very similar timeline most years with great success. Only issue is time for me. I am trying to use something that is less time each treatment and less days. I was out every week with the OA vaporizer and just don’t have the time. But it works. Haven’t ventured into the Formica pro just yet. Still skittish on that, but got good pointers at the NC State conference on using it in the spring.

    I treated yesterday without mite checking, but there's always mites, .i used OA /glycerin dribble ..
