Wow I just checked out the comments and feel like I read a totally different book. I'm actually reading the stand right now! 600 pages in and loving it! I don't want to be negative but Stephen's old stuff is so much better, that's just my real honest opinion. You just can't deny how good "Salem's lot" , "different seasons" , "the dead zone" , "it" , "the shining" "night shift" are as original novels/stories. "The long walk" as an honorable mention* and "cujo" now that I think of it haha. There's just so much pure creativity in those books and it kills me to say it but the last 10 (maybe more 🤷😔) years he just makes it way too much about his political views and it's just lacking the fire he had. I know I'm probably in the minority about that. Also "the mist" is such a great novella and "the green mile" is powerful. I also think he just has so many ideas in his head and sometimes forces the ending of a certain book so he can start a new project.

I did feel that the book lagged in spots. I almost would have been content to have Charlie and Radar come home after Radar's ride on the carousel. And I was saying to myself throughout, "Stephen King, if you kill off the dog, I swear to gawd..." Fortunately he didn't. Having said that, I did feel the book was immersive.

I loved this book. Went in expecting fantasy, was not disappointed. After finishing the book, I found myself itching for a sequel or at least something with a similar feel. I was incredibly immersed with the Empis portion. The forlorn, mysterious, bleak land that was once lush and wonderful had me hooked. I found myself imagining how everything played out. As someone who loves games like Dark souls, The Witcher etc …This book made me feel right at home. The last King book I read was Revival, could have had something to do with my general impression.

I thought the fantasy was a bit low, but that the fantasy fit the setting of the book. You mention that the fantasy seemed so mundane and without color, because it is (that's a whole plot point that I won't spoil, but you know what I'm talking about). It is definitely NOT horror, I think it gets placed there because of the name on the cover. Although, it does dip a toe into cosmic horror themes later on. I kinda liked that the book had so many fantasy tropes, and King is a little cheeky with them which I liked. I think you are right that Charlie's motivation for going to Empis with Radar is weak? strange? I can't figure out how he would think that's the right thing to do, especially when the first act of the book deals so much with grief. I thought he would be mature enough to let Radar go with some grace and dignity rather than pulling her along in a wagon on an adventure, risking both of their lives and his father's sobriety. Also, many of the side characters in the last act of the book are VERY forgettable and lack depth and dimension. On the other hand, I appreciate this book was a mere 598 pages, and not some sprawling multi-volume series with multiple intersections and references in the King-verse requiring yet more background reading (my wife is currently trying to read everything in the Sarah J Maas-verse and I do NOT envy her at all). In my opinion, this book was a fun little jaunt into an other world where the prince saves the day (another trope) and the dog doesn't die. It doesn't have to be more, and it doesn't claim to be either.
3.5 stars out of 5, acceptable.

    • @TooBadAboutKenny
      @TooBadAboutKenny  5 місяців тому +2

What a thoughtful review! I appreciate this! I'm also glad that you agree Charlies motives for saving Radar were weak. I've heard from other people that they were fully in on saving Radar. I mean, don't get me wrong, I loved that dog too... but not enough to risk everything.
I agree about not being bogged down by multiple books in a longwinded franchise. This book is a one-and-done... as it should be.

This was my first King novel and I was sadly a bit dissappointed. They protagonist didn't really seem to have an arch - to me, he's the same person before the whole ordeal as he is after; with knowledge of another world and a dog, but that's about it. I wish he had overcome some internal flaw or a great advisary. The one time we get some action, he just shoots a gun and it's over in no time. When you said it felt like you were reading two different stories, that resonated very well with my feelings on the matter.
I might try my hand at more King in the future, maybe Dark Tower I guess.

Very late to the game but I wanted to point out that the only real connection I remember from this story to the Dark Tower is the line, "There are other worlds than these." I have come to realise that I am a Classic King fan. I’ve read most of his early novels like Carrie, The Shining, Salems Lot etc many times. Like many of the New King books Fairy Tale was a disappointment. Loved the first half and it held my attention but the Empis section just wasn’t for me. I actually think the collaborative novel he wrote in the 80’s with Peter Straub - The Talisman - is a far more entertaining ‘fantasy’ novel. I completely agree: I enjoyed this book up until Charlie went through the portal. After that, it was just so dreadful! And the writing got worse and worse towards the end with repeating phrases sometimes within the same page. As if King lost all ideas for describing Gogmagog and just sorta got stuck. I loved radar, and I got excited when radar got on the sundial. That grasshopper! I hate grasshoppers! But! I appreciate that he found Charlie and successfully delivered a letter to help him escape. When he lost his virginity as a token thank you jester from the queen I said HELL YEAH! The ending after Charlie showed Empis to his father was awesome then having to buried the only way to Empis was a completely goodbye story, Charlie was rich at the end and that’s what makes this fantasy rich. I give this book a 7.5
Idk why but once they reached Gogmagog it strongly reminded me of the beginning of Zelda tears of the kingdom how everything was green and Gogmagog was possessing Elden Gallien.

I loved both of the movies, so I felt more confident diving in.

Speaking of watching movies first, before I read the fairy tale I bought a mystery book at barnes & nobel which was wrapped in like an old paper bag.I couldn’t decide what to read and the mystery book was only $15 , when I got done purchasing it I opened it right away and I received my first Stephen king book (the misery)! At the time I didn’t know it had a legit movie based off the book ,my opinion the book was way more hardcore than the actual film.the film left out a lot of the story out.i was waiting for the writer Pual Sheldon to scream AFICA! In the basement When he heard the sheriff looking for him in the Annie Wilkes home. Nope never happened he just said IM HERE! Lol also the book said Annie Wilkes amputated one of pual Sheldon leg off and burned the wound to help heal before he bleed out ,his finger also wasn’t cut off in the movie and lastly he didn’t look as terrified in the movie oh yeah and two deputies were killed in the book. Either way I loved the movie but the book was better for me .

I was disappointed in this but I found the fantasy elements to be extremely lazy. King was so focused on comparing them to modern pop culture references that they didn’t seem to be realised, rather it was “these are like the walking dead zombies” “this is the Chthulhu of this world.”

King could just have just written about those relationships dad/ son, old man/ young man, human being/ animal. 2/ The fantasy part.

I gave it a 9 out of 10 because i'm too scared to hate it because I love fantasy and the cliche fantasy tropes are all there. but i totally understand you did'nt like the book. also, the first part is indeed better and the second half was a bit slow. i feel like when he got captured after he saved Radar, thats when i felt like the rest was unnecesary or should be a totaly different story. i also have to mention, something i didnt write in my Reading Journal (because at the time i was a bit lazy to write after i binge read the book, not because its a good book but because i have a huge TBR pile i need to get to so i try reading so much that its the only thing i do, even if i am dissapointed with the book) but if i waited writing , i should have mentioned : this New Stephen King is not something i was good with; i feel like New King just Is'nt the same. not scary or gory (okay, some scenes still got some gore, but overal it was rather tame), it parts a little childish to me. one thing you needed to brought up (okay, i did'nt journal that it ddidnt feel like King but..) was that the romantic subplot (Charlie falling inlove with a certain character) felt like out of place and too cringey in my opinion. that turned me a little off and if not for the massive TBR and Stephen King i would probably turned the book down at that point but i powerread through it. when the climax of the story begain, thats when i thought the book was a little better again and was like a wink to HP Lovecraft (sorry if thats too spoilery) and it was dark and felt more King than most of the book. the FairyTale part is good for Non King but Stephen King i felt it was a bit of a dissapointment. there is that one part in the book that had a little Dark Tower reference but since its a fantasy novel with a whole new world, i was dissapointed with how little it actually had to do with Dark Tower except for that one little line they said, 'Long Day's and Pleasant Nights" and also "There are Other Worlds than These" but there was no Tower in that Field of poppy's or a mention of it.
the reason i gave it 9 is because i am not good at giving King a Low Score because two of his books i read deserved that but Fairy Tale had potential to be good and the first half was pretty good still. and somewere at the end it picked up steam again. but One thing that stayed a True Stephen King novel ; the middle is soo boring and longwined and could have gone with a trim.
but yeah, did'nt feel King for me.
and is it just This book or is that just new King? because the newest King i read before that was 11/22/63 wich still had that King feel and had more connections with his books. i miss the Old Classic King.
if i score this book the next time (its too late but still...) i would give it an 8. not a 9 but 8.
dissapointed there is'nt more Dark Tower related lore in the book beside for those two little dialoge sentences lol.

It is so boring and mundane, like it's filled with fantastical elements once we reach Empis, but it just always feels so dull and grey and loooong and low stakes. I was looking for an explanation, why do I feel like it's so dull?? And the answer is.. Because it is. I feel like King just hasn't managed to bring life to this fantasy world, which is weird when he's so good at bringing fantastical elements into our world in other novels. But I feel like he has twisted his brain to write like a "proper fantasy novel", and it just doesn't do. There is just no wonder in this book.. So glad it's not me, it's the book!

Regardless, if you were so incredibly "put off" by it, maybe you ought to try your hand at even publishing a novel - much less becoming the icon that Steven has *proven* himself to be... REPEATEDLY
